LAST GAME: Connor Lien hit a three run home run in the top of the second inning, extending his hitting streak to five games, to give the MBraves a 3-1 lead. Matt Withrow (1-0) earned the win by pitching six strong innings allowing only one run while walking one and striking out five. Wes Parsons (0-0-1) kept the Smokies at bay until Mississippi found more offense in the eighth and ninth innings scoring three and four runs, respectively, in each. Travis Demeritte extending his hitting streak to five games with an RBI double in the eighth inning. Then Carlos Franco smashed his second home run of the season with a two run shot over the right center field wall. PIPELINE TO THE MAJORS: Since moving to Mississippi the Atlanta Braves Double-A organization has proven to be extremely effective in their primary role of developing talent in order to move them up to the Show. Through 2016, 12 seasons, 120 players have made it to the Major Leagues after spending some time in Mississippi. of those, 20 made the jump directly to Atlanta from AA Mississippi. These include players like, Brian McCann, Blaine Boyer, Jeff Francoeur, Martin Prado, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Andrelton Simmons, Alex Wood, Mauricio Cabrera and the latest, Dansby Swanson, just to name a few. With this years crop of young arms, the MBraves hope to continue their success in preparing players for the Majors. FIELD STAFF: Manager Luis Salazar returns for his second season with the Double-A Braves in He s the sixth manager in Mississippi Braves history will also be Salazar s 14th season as a minor league manager. He has a career managerial record of Salazar originally joined the Braves organization in 2011 and managed the High-A club for five seasons at Lynchburg ( ) and Carolina (2015) before joining the M-Braves. Derrick Lewis moves up to the Double-A club after spending the past three seasons ( ) as pitching coach with the Braves High-A affiliate is Lewis 14th season in the Braves organization. He joined the Braves organization in 2004 and spent four seasons with the GCL Braves ( ), three with the Danville club ( ) and three at Low-A Rome ( ). Ivan Cruz joins the Mississippi Braves for his first season with the Double-A Braves in 2017 after spending the previous three campaigns at Rookie-Danville ( ). It ll be his fourth season in the Braves organization and his 22nd season in professional baseball. Cruz spent four seasons with the San Diego Padres ( ) organization and managed the 2010 Arizona League Padres. He served as the AZL Padres hitting coach for two seasons ( ) before moving up to Rookie-Eugene in the same capacity for the 2013 campaign. In the Hole The Mississippi Braves 2nd Road Trip of 2017 will take them some 250 miles to east along Hwy 80 as they travel to Montgomery, AL to play the Biscuits for 5 Games. He was moved from the beginning of the rotation to the end for this series, but Fried is believed to still be the number one starter as the season progresses. LAST TIME OUT Fried lasted only one and two-thirds innings giving up four runs, two earned, on four hits with three walks and two strike outs. Entered 2016 as the Braves ninth-best prospect according to Baseball America. Spent the entire season at Low-A Rome, posting a record of 8-7 with a 3.93 ERA in 21 games (20 starts). Struck out 112 in 103 innings of work. Made five starts in the month of June, picking up four wins and only one loss while notching a 1.29 ERA. He did not allow a run in his two July outings.
