Presdent Graham Robb, Knox County Fund Drve Coordnator and Alumn Assocaton Presdent Patrck McGraw The fnal speech was made by Presdent Jordan who sad that the ARC would "fll out and complete the expanson of Kenyon planned n the960s", and that t was "an answertoa very pressng need" See related story page three Sparse Audence Observes Honors By DAVD HOLTHAUS Last Tuesday mornng the faculty, admnstraton, and a small percentage of the student body partcpated n the annual Honors Day Convocaton Werthemer Feldhouse as decked out n foldng chars and purple curtans for the event, usually held n Rosse Hall Although the expected attracton of Jonathan Wnters as an honored speaker was the reason for the swtch, there were fewer students n attendance than were on stage to receve awards The convocaton began wth a processonal march played by the Kenyon College Easy Wnners, as the faculty and admnstraton marched n black caps and gowns The Reverend Lncoln Stelk gave the nvocaton, whch was followed hy a short speech by Presdent Jrdan, n whch he lkened the honored students to "a crack brgade ofsolders" The conferrng of Honorary Degrees was next on the program Stephen Slack and Presdent Jordan conferred the awards n Latn Keven ODonnell, class of 47, was awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degree ODonnell s Presdent and Chef Operatng Offcer of SFCO ndustres, nc, charman of the Kenyon Fund, former head of the ace Corps, and a man whom Presdent Jordan descrbed as sufferng from "an embarrassment of rches" The Rght Reverend Wllam Wwn Swng, class of 58, and Bshop of the Epscopal Docese of lforna, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Dvnty degree Jordan of Bshop Swng, "He addressed er questons n the lfe of the urch, and promoted the role of 7 women n the church" Former Kenyon student Jonathan Wnters was ntroduced by James Mchael as havng, "a bref but dazzlng career at Kenyon," and as one "who entertaned a select audence from the steps of the West Wng," was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree Wnters was the only one of the three to speak, and hs remarks lent an ar of humor and levty to the proceedngs Wnters opened by sayng, " rarely go back to places leave, unless theres money nvolved" Snce there was no money nvolved ths tme, Wnters sad he would settle for the thronelk e char Presdent Jordan was sttng n He sad he was dsapponted at the absence of M SAGA And Unon Workers Settle Contract By DUNCAN HOLCOMB SAGA management and unonzed employees have agreed to a threeyea r contract The employees voted 28 to 5 n favor of a new contract Although the Federal Medator was unable to set a date on whch he could assst negotatons, the two groups arrved at an agreement The employees unonzed last October The contract assures a number of new benefts for the workers The most mportant of these s an acrosstheboar d pay ncrease of at least ffteen cents per hour, and n some cases, as much as thrtyfv e cents Other benefts nclude a slght ncrease n the number of pad sck days and holdays per year, an extra Admssons, Enrollment Stable, Applcatons Are Up Sx Percent By JOD PROTO and SALLY MCGLL The Kenyon Admssons Offce reports that t has receved approxmately 530 applcatons for entrance nto next years freshman class The fgure represents a sx percent ncrease over the number of applcatons receved last year at ths tme John D Kushan, Drector of Admssons sad that Kenyon has accepted 000 applcants, the same number t accepted last year Of these, the college expects forty to fortyfv e percent to actually enroll So the Admssons Offce predcts that there wll be a freshmen class of 400 to 425 students next year t has generally been accepted throughout the country that college enrollment would drop n the eghtes due to the decrease n brth rate of about twenty years ago, and the ncreased enrollment of students n post hgh school educaton other than four year colleges However, that problem "hasnt yet ht Kenyon" accordng to Kushan Nevertheless, t was reported at the Parents Advsory Councl meetng last week that Kenyon has been ncreasng ts recrutng efforts because of the expected drop n college enrollment t s stll too early to determne whether or not the ncreased recrutng efforts are females n those prmeval days when allmale Kenyon was an school, and sad that may have been the reason he ddnt stay around to graduate Wnters, a parttm e artst, ddnt close before gettng n a gbe at the tattered Feldhouse murals "Whoever dd those s probably n Ward K rght now," he sad He ended wth some small prase of Kenyon, "ts Kenyon, ts small; and ts nce to be small sometmes" Before Wnters address a new award was conferred, named after ts frst recpent, Katherne Allen The prze s not to be awarded every year, and s gven for "frendshp and servce to the Kenyon, Gamber, and Mt Vernon communty" Ms Allen grew up n Gamber as the daughter K7 Unon Member Hazel Squrrel and Unon Organzer Alce Burson employee unform, more nsurance clause states that when a new spltshftsbenefts, a ban on, and a senorty clause The spltsh clause poston opens up, t wll be assgned ft 0n the bass of senorty L nsures tnat an employee wn nu uc asked to work four hours early n the SAGA employee and unon day, take a few hours off, and then organzer Alce Burson beleves that work another four The senorty the new contract s decent, but not responsble for the ncrease n the number of applcants ths year Kenyon s concentratng ts new recrutng practces n the South, West, and Southwest because of the Colleges general lack of representaton n those areas Among the new efforts s the use of alumn n states where Kenyon s not well known Jennfer Luker of the admssons Department sad "Alumn are very supportve We had a specal semnar for them n the fall and now prospectve students and ther parents can talk to the alumn about Kenyon and see slde shows at specal gatherngs n ther ctes" For the past three years, the admssons department has been sendng assstants to vst hgh schools n the Southwest and on the West Coast "We have gone to places lke Texas, Mssour, Arzona and Oklahoma Our most mportant contact s wth hgh school counselors We make appontments and vst the schools to dscuss Kenyon wth prospectve students," Mss Luker sad The college s also sendng more lterature, such as the college catalogue and brochures to these areas, and s consderng prntng a separate brochure for each department The college catalogue wll also be rewrtten as s done every two to three years Despte ncreasng costs of tuton and other college expenses n recent Day Rtes of a faculty member, and the award was offered to her "for her abdng love of Kenyon" Jerry Kng and Steve Penn, both class of 80, were out of ther chars more than anyone else Kng receved a Thomas J Watson Fellowshp as dd Erc Gaskns, 80 He also receved the E Malcolm Anderson Cup as the person who has done the most for Kenyon durng the current year, the Art Prze for the hghest cumulatve average n Art, The Margaret E Lesle Memoral Prze Lesle Stone, prospectve member of the class of 84, gves the admssons pamphlet a close look years, Kenyon has not experenced a problem n attractng students as a result However, the effect does show up n the number of fnancal ad requests "One hundred more students appled for fnancal ad ths year than dd last year," sad Kushan Also, because of the declne n the number of college age students, many colleges have lowered ther admssons standards n order to fll new classes to capacty, but Kushan does not beleve that Kenyon has had to do ths " dontthnk the students are of lower qualty at all Ther paper records are as good, f not better," Kushan sad Mrs Betty York, a member of the admssons staff agrees wth Mr Kushan that the qualty of students comng to Kenyon has not changed, but she has notced one changed n comparson to past years "More and more students are vewng a college educaton as preparng them for a professon, and not so much as an end n tself" n contrast to the opnon that college enrollment wll declne n the comng years, a recent study done by the Amercan Councl on Educaton (ACE) predcts that enrollment may actually ncrease n the eghtes Accordng to the study, college enrollment s expected to level off or even ncrease by as much as 35 percent Among the reasons cted were: an mprovement n the retenton rate of current students, an contnued on page eght really satsfactory "ts farly good But we could have done a lot better f the workers had stuck together more SAGA knew we were not really unted, and that made the negotatons harder" Burson sad that the frst contract s always the most dffcult to negotate, and they hope to acheve more n the years to come "The only thng we are unhappy wth s the money The pay rases we are gong to get n the next three years are a step n the rght drecton, but they really dont gve us much more than we normally get wth the annual ncrease n the mnmum wage" The employees had orgnally asked for costoflvan automatc ng ncrease, but SAGA management nssted that such an ncrease would be

we have a corporate structure consstng of varous departments whch receve lttle nput from students and must even requre ther nvolvement n plannng; we have a socal structure consstng of fraterntes and clubs; and we have the meda All these enttes, seperate and unto themselves, are self servng and desre autonomy whle acceptng and complyng wth decsons of the admnstraton There s no attempt to affect admnstratve actons snce the separate enttes dont take each other serously and donteven take themselves serously Kenyon students expect Utopa a place where nvolvement n socety s not needed snce everythng s n perfect order f they consder the tuton bll the tcket to freedom from socety and the means to unhndered mental preparaton, then Kenyon students are only makng the condton worse for whch they are supposedly becomng prepared The college should encourage the applcaton of thought to acton so that students can actually become prepared for what they wll face when they leave here A "breadth of experence" can be ganed only f our deas concernng socety can be tested n the surrogate socety of our own creaton t s only a matter of tme before the ncomng Kenyon student fnds that the Magc Mountan s not all that magc And wth the magc gone, he fnds hmself prepared for nothne Lke the schools that emphasze tranng for certan professons Kenyon should emphasze tranng for the greater socety through an actve or nterdependent student socety f, n fact, "more students are vewng a college educaton as preparng them for a professon, and not as an end n tself" the college would be wse to take such an approach snce the Magc Mountan wll hold lttle appeal for the classes of 984, and after More mportantly, by presentng prospectves wth the actual character of the college, more students wll be attracted who mght breath some lfe nto the comatose Kenyon socety Tre Kenyon w&a Collegan Tm Haes EdtornChe f Parker Monroe CUs Ldlor ; prospect for our country and the world We must recrut the best mnds of our naton from academe, busness, government to confront the major ssues of global wealth and responsblty, energy and nternatonal securty Dens Baly, Professor of Relgon: The most mmedate problem centers on ran and Afghanstan The great long term problem s the ncreasng economc dsparty between the developed natons of the North, and mportant problem facng the world today s the orentaton of vrtually all natons towards an ndustral consumerorente d economy and socety such as those n the Western countres n such aspraton the thrd world faces two man problems: the fact that the West has such a huge head start that gap can never be closed even under deal crcumstances and the quckly acceleratng depleton of natural resources necessary for a modern socety Those countres whch are already dependent on technology and hgh materal consumpton fnd ther standards of lvng slppng because of scarcty and blame thrd world competton for Threat of nuclear war or dsaster Bran Ranee, Junor: A large number of todays problems could be attrbuted to a lack of respect for the rghts of ndvduals n a large, complex, nterdependent world The temptaton to dsregard the prncples of lberalsm and opt nstead for totaltaran or Utopan solutons s great However, the soluton to the worlds problems must frst le n the establshment of respect for mens thnk they can all be traced back to a ne other "prettyng up" He sad "an 8la all weather track wll be nstalled outsde," and, "nne new all purpose, multus e felds" would be bult Because the south tenns 5 called te, Smoke Jumps Btter Hurdles By TOM PRESTON There s an old expresson that s often heard wthn the hallowed halls of Bolton Theater "f youre stuck wth lemons, make lemonade" Last weekend, wth the KCDCs producton of Summer and Smoke, the audence got a prme example of just what ths phrase means The groundplan for the set was the lemon, and the lemonade was the cramped blockng that resulted from actors tryng to move around n too small a space Drector Harlene Marley deftly attempted to cover for ths problem groundplan; t ddnt qute work The actng areas were so small that, at least on openng nght, actors couldnt help bumpng nto set props Admttedly, ths lemon of a groundplan was the partal result of what s becomng a crtcal problem n the Drama Dept: fewer and fewer students are nterested n work on scenery constructon and desgn However, questons of fault asde, one can easly see that, faced wth ths problem, the only thng to do s "make lemonade" The lghtng desgn by Nancy Collngs helped matters by beng partcularly effectve; mtatng the effect of freworks n the nght sky was an excellent touch One can especally apprecate the qualty of ths producton n lght of the dffculty nvolved n "pullng t off" The acton of Summer and Smoke s bascally so orented to the ntellectual debate between Almas phlosophy of sprt and Johns phlosophy of hedonsm that the play tends to get overly "talky," and as a result borng to watch For example, at the clmax of the play, Alma declares "the tables have turned wth a vengeance" What exactly has changed? Well, presumably John has come to realze the sgnfcance of the soul, whle Alma has shed her ntegrty to avod her newfound lonelness; they have passed each other n the metaphyscal nght Sound a bt too abstract for an actor to play? Well, thnk so The awkwardness n ths s, of course, Wllams fault; the acton of the play s geared towards allowng Wllams to stand on hs soapbox and expound hs pecular vew of lfe Unfortunately, ths provdes a dffcult hurdle to the actors n the form of bad (or overly ntellectualzed) dalogue The cast, however, overcame (n large part) these dffcultes Arana Tord as Alma Wnemller was partcularly effectve n ths She gave a fne performance n a play and n a character than can easly trp up an unsuspectng actor She really made the obscure ntellectual conflct between John and Alma "work," thus salvagng a lot of otherwse untenable dalogue Nck Bakay as John Buchanan, Jr was also very good and certanly was equally responsble for makng the aforementoned problem scenes "work" He gave a partcularly smooth performance of a hghly r, o Arana Tord and Nna Klen perform n Summer and Smoke complex character Among the rest of the cast there were some remarkable performances Pamela Whecls was excellent as the catty Mrs Bassett Her characterzaton showed great understandng and was fnely worked out As a result t was qute nterestng to watch Perce Cunnngham as Dr Buchanan, Sr was also excellent Hs performance was partcularly effectve; Mr Cunnngham commanded tremendous stage presence There were performances numerous other good among a qute strong and well cast producton; however there snt space enough to menton them here Let t pass that Summer and Smoke was a very good lemonade made from qute btter lemons Revue Goes Wld Ths Weekend The Kenyon Muscal Revue wll brng "rdculous, cute, farccal satre" to the Rosse Hall stage ths Frday and Saturday Months n the Codrecto rs makng, Andy Smmons and Mo Ryan say theyve got a good show, backed by a band whch ncludes Ron Lnk, Dave Neel, Ayars Hemphll, Phl Smth and Lthan "Buddy" Powsner " thnk ts gong to be a bt wlder ths year," sad Stan Merrell, "were lettng t all hang out" Tckets wll be on sale at Gund and Perce dnner, and also at the door Admsson s free for students, $50 for anyone else Curtan tme wll be at eght oclock Orgnal Farce Steals nto KC ts Ths weekend sees the premere of a new play by Toby Burvvell, enttled "s There a Burglar n the House?" A rollckng farce, t depcts the mshaps of a nutty famly gong through a reunon Or, rather, t s about the attempts of one famly, the Randalls, to mpress ther Uncle Fred, an eccentrc mllonare who keeps a fortune n jewels n the paper bag he carres wth hm at all tmes And there s also a romance between the Randalls spnster daughter and an unnvted "mystery" guest All ths and more wll unfold down at the KC
