The AFL sees Umpire Caches as having the greatest influence ver the envirnment in which an umpire participates in, and sees the cach as the key persn in prviding supprt fr all umpires within their grup. Umpire Recgnitin Rund Rund 4 Rund 4 f the 2009 Tyta AFL Premiership Seasn the AFL will be Umpire Recgnitin Rund and is a fllw up t the successful Green Shirt rund in The rund will aim t raise awareness and create a greater understanding f the AFL Umpire Green Shirt Prgram thrughut the ftball cmmunity. The AFL Umpire Green Shirt Prgram is an umpire educatin and develpment prgram that aims t use experienced umpires t mentr new and inexperienced umpires. During all Rund 4 matches, all AFL field umpires will wear a special light green shirt. As part f the Green Shirt prgram, lcal leagues acrss the cuntry use the light green shirt t signify a new r inexperienced umpire that may be still learning the game. The greater the awareness that an umpire in a light green shirt is in training, the greater likelihd players, caches and supprters will ffer their encuragement and supprt. The Green Shirt prgram, nw in its fifth year is critical t the retentin f umpires arund Australia, as the majrity f umpires wh quit umpiring d s within their first r secnd year f umpiring due t the lack f supprt/understanding while they are still learning the craft. The AFL s Umpire Recgnitin Rund aims t recgnise apprximately 1800 green shirt umpires alng with 700 mentrs frm acrss the cuntry. Additinally, all Rund 4 AFL umpires will pay tribute t their pathway t the elite umpiring ranks by displaying the names f their frmer lcal umpiring grup n the frnt f their game shirt. On cmpletin f the runds matches, all shirts will be returned t each lcal umpiring grup.

3 Perth based AFL Field Umpire Dean Margetts and Prt Adelaide Captain Dminic Cassisi cannt get enugh f each ther. Prir t paving his way t the elite umpiring ranks, Margetts devted his time t the Maddingtn Junir Ftball Club under 13 s, caching the lcal WA club in It was in that Maddingtn team that a talented Western Australian yungster by the name f Dminic Cassisi slid thrugh the Sunday mud in search f his next kick. Margetts 34, recalls caching Cassisi in his junir days, even frm a yung age Dminic s leadership skills were clearly evident, said Margetts. At the age f just 13 he was accmplished n bth sides f his bdy, he culd kick better than mst f the Maddingtn senir team. Due t wrk cmmitments Margetts nly cached Cassisi fr 12 mnths befre ging their separate ways, yet the tiny cncrete laden rms f Maddingtn Junir Ftball Club wuld nt be where this unique stry ended. In 1996, Margetts clsed the dr n his junir caching days befre cmmencing his umpiring career at the Demns District Junir Umpires Assciatin (frmerly SSJFUA). While the Western Australian successfully prgressed alng the AFL umpiring pathway, Cassisi was making ftball prgress f his wn. The tw clashing nce mre in the 2000 WAFL Grand Final at Subiac between East Perth and East Fremantle. While Cassisi s East Fremantle side was defeated by 39 pints, the day was still a mnumental mment in the prgressive careers f bth Margetts and Cassisi. Margetts was elevated t the AFL Umpires listed in 2002, making his debut in the Rund 5 West Cast vs. Brisbane clash at Subiac Oval. Margetts has nw umpired 108 AFL senir matches. Irnically, Margetts had the pleasure f shaking his frmer players hand prir t Cassisi s first game as Prt Adelaide Captain. Margetts umpired the Rund 1 Prt Adelaide vs. Essendn game at AAMI Stadium, taking the pprtunity t cngratulate Cassisi and remind him f his Maddingtn rts. I tld Dminic that I was prud f his achievements, t cme frm a remte WA twn t eventually Captain a pwerful club at the cuntry s highest level, it s a credit t Dminic and his family, said Margetts. Frm the Maddingtn change rms t the centre square f AAMI stadium 14 years later, Margetts and Cassisi had arrived at exactly the same time, yet had taken entirely different rutes. With Margetts cntinuing t develp within the AFL umpiring ranks and Prt Adelaide seemingly set t make anther launch twards September, culd there be yet anther chapter t be written in the Margetts vs. Cassisi series? Umpiring and training in ht cnditins The new seasn generally starts in warm t ht cnditins and there is always a lift in intensity nce the premiership seasn prper starts. Regardless f the quality f pre-seasn training prgrams, early games are usually mre stressful and umpires

4 and caches shuld keep safety factrs assciated with high intensity exercise in warm cnditins in mind these include hydratin and sun sense. The fllwing article by AIS/AFL Academy dietitian Michelle Crt prvides gd advice regarding hydratin. (Please nte: we have adapted her riginal article fr umpires. Originally this article was presented t address hydratin in players. The ntin f hydratin is imprtant fr players and umpires.) Tughen Up - Have a Drink! Why are s many trainers necessary n a senir AFL field and why they are cnstantly appraching players fr a drink during a game? Obviusly the utcme f nt drinking enugh fluid is dehydratin. The ntin f aviding fluid during sprt t train, tughen r adjust an athlete s bdy t handle dehydratin is extremely utdated & scientifically incrrect. Even very small amunts f dehydratin will reduce perfrmance. Mst senir AFL cnditining, nutritin and medical staff invest cnsiderable time int ensuring the players are ding everything pssible t prevent significant dehydratin frm ccurring in training and games. The effects n perfrmance are nt limited t elite athletes. All levels f sprts peple are affected as are children playing sprt. An AFL umpire s perfrmance can be reduced due t dehydratin even befre they ntice they are beginning t fade. An increase in heart rate, bdy temperature and perceptin f hw hard the exercise feels are the first nticeable affects f dehydratin. These are accmpanied by a decrease in cncentratin and mental functining and a reductin in crrect decisin making. As dehydratin prgresses further muscle cramping can ccur. If higher levels f dehydratin (ver 3-4%) are reached there is an increased risk f nausea, vmiting, diarrhea and ther gastr intestinal prblems during exercise. Mst umpires can expect t lse apprximately ml f fluid (mstly via sweat) per hur. Hwever sme umpires can experience lsses f 2 r mre litres per hur. Numerus scientific studies have prven sprts drink t be a great chice f fluid during mst frms f exercise. Cnsuming a sprts drink, in preference t ther fluids such as water r crdial, has been shwn t imprve perfrmance. This is due t tw majr factrs, 1. Sprts drinks cntain an ptimal cmbinatin f fluids, carbhydrates and electrlytes which results in imprved absrptin f fluid, and 2. The carbhydrate in the sprts drink prvides the bdy with extra energy during exercise. Yu will ntice in senir AFL games, the team trainers running nt the field with their squeeze bttles at every pssible pprtunity. This helps ensure that the player has the best chance f aviding dehydratin. This in turn results in a faster, mre skilful and entertaining game, and helps avid the severe health cnsequences that can ccur due t dehydratin.

5 Fr yur perfrmance it is well wrth the effrt f structuring regular drink breaks in training and rehydrating during matches. Maintaining hydratin and energy levels is a critical part f making sure an AFL umpire achieves their best. Well frmulated sprts drinks can help t achieve bth f these things. Indicatins Learning Outcmes A mark ccurs when a player catches the ftball (r cntrls the ftball by hand r by hand r arm against his bdy) within the playing surface frm a kick f at least 15m by anther player, and the ball nt having tuched the grund r been tuched by anther player after the kick and befre the catch The law des nt stipulate hw lng a player must clearly hld the ball but he must cntrl it. A ne grab catch shuld be paid as a mark even thugh the ball is then immediately kncked frm the player s grip.
