2 SPORTS REPORTS AFL BOYS U15 s SWANS CUP: With minimal preparation and a lack of experience for the game of AFL, Callaghan College Wallsend Campus went into the Swans Cup with a lot of uncertainty. The team faced some tough opposition in Merewether High School for their first game, who finished in 2nd place last year. It was always going to be a tough game as all except two Merewether players were regular weekend AFL players, whereas we only have three regulars on our team. However, this did not phase the Callaghan team as they kicked, bounced, hand balled and discovered new rules along the way to a game they lost by just 3 goals. It was a highly entertaining game from the sidelines which saw a lot of love begin to develop for a game they knew nothing about a few weeks ago. The second game was a lot more evenly matched in which Callaghan took on Whitebridge High School who had a team with similar AFL experience. This was a game where most of the play was in the 50m line for the attacking Callaghan team to display once again some entertaining football. Halftime saw a change in the attacking and defensive lines, but the goals kept on coming to have Callaghan College Wallsend run out to a 6 goal win in the end. All the boys involved played with great sportsmanship and represented our school in outstanding fashion. A very enjoyable day was had by all. Mr Joshua Corby AFL Coach FUTSAL NNSW STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS: Callaghan Wallsend sent a U14 s and U16 s Girls Futsal team to Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium to participate in the NNSW State Championships. The U16 s girls were gallant in their 3 games, coming away with 2 draws and a narrow 2 1 loss to Kurri Kurri HS which saw them miss a semi final berth. Our U14 girls were magnificent in going through the day undefeated, winning all 5 games. Congratulations to them on being crowned NNSW Schools 14s champions. Congratulations also to Olivia Kakoulidis, Eloise Metcalfe, Jayde Platford and Jorja Brown who have all been selected to represent NNSW in the upcoming Schools Nationals in Brisbane in late September. We wish them all the best. Mr Michael Psarris Futsal Coach

3 RUGBY LEAGUE U14 S RUGBY LEAGUE BUCKLEY SHIELD: Well done to the U14 s Boys Rugby League Buckley Shield team on a very successful 2018 season. The team progressed through the initial gala day at Windale, then the tough Super 8 s gala day, then ended up Hunter Region runners up beaten by Warners Bay in the Grand Final. From this result the team qualified for the NSWCHS finals and had to play a South Coast School. Our away trip ended up being to Albion Park against a very strong Mulwaree High School team on Tuesday 19 June. The boys unfortunately put in one of their worst performances on the road in what was terrible, cold, wet and windy conditions. The Boys were defeated 20 6 and eliminated from the competition. Standout performers throughout the match was our captain Preston Conn, Jacob West and Banjo Davies. I would like to congratulate all players that took part in representing Wallsend Campus in this competition. The improvement from the start of the year to the end of Term 2 has been fantastic and definitely excites me as a coach for the 2019 season with this squad. Special mention to Noah Iles for a brilliant first school rugby league season, a standout performer and fast learner throughout the games. Consistent team performers throughout the season also include Preston Conn, Jacob West, Taison Williamson, Banjo Davies and Tyrese Gordon. Mr Andrew Johnson Rugby League Coach U14 s GIRLS KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT QUARTER & SEMI FINAL: The Girls U14 Rugby League team competed in the semi final of the Knights Knockout against St Joseph s Aberdeen. The girls were a bit shaky to begin with after training sessions had been cancelled due to bad weather, but then worked together as a team to score the first try. Outstanding defensive play demonstrated by Marnie Robinson with several line breaks from Jorja Brown, saw the girls score another two tries. The girls went on to beat St Joseph s 12 4 and progress to the Knights Knockout Grand Final at McDonald Jones Stadium. This is a massive achievement by a team who do not normally play rugby league. Player s player: Marnie Robinson Congratulations girls! Very proud coach! U16 s GIRLS KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT QUARTER & SEMI FINAL: The girls advanced to the quarter finals of the Knights Knockout competition and met Rutherford High school. The girls played solidly but lacked confidence and enthusiasm due to the loss of a few of our regular players because of injuries and conflicting sporting commitments. This impacted our performance and we lost The girls then went on to play a consolation game against St. Pius and while the girls lifted their intensity, they lost the match. We will now turn our focus to the Caitlin Moran Cup in early Term 3. Player s player was our tireless captain Sonniah Waiyo. Ms Kirbi Masters & Mrs Amanda Phillips Rugby League Coaches

4 U13 s BOYS KNIGHTS KNOCKOUT: The U13's boys rugby league team were involved in their first Knights Knockout competition as Wildcats this term and after numerous wash outs they finally got to play. Their first hit out was in a Gala Day event at Glendale where they faced Maitland High School first up. The team lost this game 8 4 with a small lapse in defence off the back of a scrum which led to an easy try for Maitland. The next game was against West Wallsend High School against whom the Wildcats had a good win. Plenty of entertaining and attacking footy was on show in this game and it was just what the team needed going into their final must win game. This game was against Glendale High School who hadn t lost a game all day. After some good defence, the Wildcats got their opportunity to attack the Glendale High School try line and came away with a well constructed try and the win. At the end of the Gala Day the Wildcats team finished at the top of their pool and progressed to the quarter finals in Raymond Terrace the following week. The students travelled to Raymond Terrace with the hopes of staying alive in the Knights Knockout competition where they faced St Joseph's Aberdeen. The game started with the Wildcats camped on their try line making plenty of tackles and after numerous efforts, St Josephs scored out wide. This was then followed by another try and things were not looking good for the Wildcats at 8 0 down. With a stern talking to by their captain Tyrese Gordan, the Wildcats finally clicked into gear and scored a try just before half time to make it 8 6. A few injuries were suffered to key players and when the second half kicked off, it was all St Joseph's who ended up winning the game Player s player for the competition was Rhyse Parkes who had never played rugby league before and was outstanding to watch. The coach's award went to Tyrese Gordan for consistent commitment and effort to each game. I have plenty to like about this team and I predict more success to come in the next few years. Mr Joshua Corby Rugby League Coach SOCCER GIRLS BILL TURNER CUP: Round 4 of the Girls Bill Turner Cup saw Callaghan Wallsend play Hunter Sports High School in the Newcastle/Lake Macquarie Area semi final. In what can only be described as a great learning experience, our girls were comprehensively defeated on the scoreboard 9 0; however the result does not reflect the terrific and hardworking team effort that our girls demonstrated. Hunter Sports High were Finalists in the 2017 Nationwide Competition and have an even stronger team this year. Staff from Hunter Sports are saying it's the strongest squad they have had in the last 5 years. 4 of their girls were in the U18 s Hunter Region team which competed at CHS tournament in May. Great effort girls on being in the top 3 school soccer teams outside Hunter Sports in the region. Mr Michael Psarris Very proud coach

5 SOFTBALL OPEN BOYS: On Thursday 24 May, the Open Boys Softball team travelled to Stevenson Park to take part in a gala day. The teams that placed 1st and 2nd would progress to the state finals. We unfortunately lost the first 2 games of the day against Hunter Sports and Kotara High, who were both very strong teams and ended up being the two teams that progressed. The next 2 games were against Warners Bay High and Swansea High. We started a little slow against each team but got firing and put plenty of runs on the board to take the win in both. We were quite lucky in the last game against Swansea with a count back rule applied, giving us the win. A huge congratulations to the boys who were all from Wallsend Campus and playing in an Open's team. Many had never played before. Notably, there were a handful of Year 7 and 8 students who stuck it to their much older opponents. Stand out performers were: Hayden Moore who pitched nearly the entire day and led the team well, as well as Jackson Frame and Jasper Brown from Year 7 who stepped up and fielded/batted exceptionally well. The team consisted of Nate Aspinall, Sam Bakewell, Jake Borradaile, Jasper Brown, Bailey Chapman, Jacob Findlay, Jackson Frame, Cody Heywood, Zac Jacobs, Cameron Jones, Cade Mills, Hayden Moore, Jacob Saxby and Connor Terry. Mr Mitch Turner Softball Coach GIRLS CHS STATE SOFTBALL FINALS: Players Jessy Bakewell, Kiesha Beale, Sophie Henderson, Maddison McGuigan, Mia Mikulski, Leili Moho, Olivia Moore, Ella Moriarty, Carla Noble, Alexis Powell, Alexandra Tagaroulias and Sonniah Waiyo. I would like to extend a massive congratulation to the above girls who made it to, and competed strongly in, the CHS State Softball Finals at Mayfield on 26 and 27 June. On the first day, the girls showed incredible courage in playing short and out of position, however, still turned heads coming up with a win. Olivia Moore set our backbone with consistent, fast pitching which put the team in a strong position. Alex Tagaroulias stepped up and learnt quickly as the new catcher. So much so, Alex was awarded the coaches award for her courage and sportsmanship. On day two, the girls were even more competitive with a full field and experienced players showing off their skills. After a tough campaign competing against dedicated sports high schools, the girls should be proud of placing 11th in the state. I know the players and particularly myself would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our community and parent helpers, Helen Greentree and Dani Moore. Without their commitment and specialist knowledge, the whole campaign would not have been as successful. Thank you, Helen and Dani. Well done girls. Let s aim even higher next year! Mr Brenten James Softball Coach
