10 The Wildlife Aspect Additional Property Information 1190 Wheeler Rd, Windham, VT The Maple Haven Wildlife and Hunting Preserve: When Jim and Leslie decided to put in food plots for deer, they didn t just clear-cut a patch of woods and throw seeds on the ground. Using their education and experience, Jim s as a wildlife biologist and Leslies as a forester, they chose specific areas based on soil tests, slope, available sunlight, soil moisture content, proximity to travel corridors, and surrounding vegetation. Based on the soil tests, appropriate amounts of lime and fertilizer were applied. Four areas have been prepared to create additional plots. It is important for deer to have a source of nutrition. Doe s need healthy forage after giving birth to fawns. Bucks need to replenish their strength after rut. Jim and Leslie chose several mixes of seeds from Biologic and the Whitetail Institute resulting in a nearly year-round source of forage. For those who enjoy viewing wildlife, the 10 food plots covering approximately 10 acres also benefit many other species of wildlife. Turkey, grouse, and various songbirds can be seen feeding on insects and ripe seeds. Bear will also feed on the grasses in the plots and berries around the edges. Snowshoe hare additionally frequent the plots and edges. For hunters, Jim and Leslie have strategically placed 8 tree stands about the property. Each stand location is based on its proximity to travel corridors, food plots, water source and wind direction. The past 4 years have yielded the harvesting of 5 bucks. One, at 209 lbs. set the Vermont State record in 2011 for a buck harvested during an archery season. The property has two spring fed ponds that are stocked with brook trout. As the ponds were being constructed, the protection of the fish was taken into consideration. Pond banks are steep, making it difficult for herons, a wading bird that loves fish, to prematurely harvest Jim and Leslie s fish. Boulders that were encountered in construction were placed on the bottom to create structures for fish to hide in from raiding predators. With the ponds being 10 feet deep, fish overwinter in the deep, warmer waters. Many fine Whitetails have been harvested from the property. To the left is the 2009 Vermont State record taken by bow.

Offering more than 16 miles of shoreline, and covering acres fishing and paddling are favorites here. White River The White River is a tributary of the Connecticut River with headwaters in Green Mountain National Forest. Flowing through the town of Bethel, the river offers great fishing and fly fishing opportunities, with plentiful Brown Trout and Brook Trout.
