2 GENERAL MANAGER U P D A T E Hello from the Ark... or at least it feels that way. The rain has certainly had an affect on the club, unfortunately not the way we like. October is here and, traditionally, it has been a great weather month. With that in mind, I look forward to seeing the Club come alive with activity. Member events in October kick off with the 2nd Annual Uptown Hoedown on Friday the 12th. This year our feature band is The Foggy Bottom Bluegrass Band. They come to us with great reviews. The band will be followed by a DJ and, of course, the Raging (Mechanical) Bull ride will return.it promises to be another fun night! Junior events in October include the Renaissance Fair on Sunday the 14th and the Annual Kids Halloween Party on Friday the 26th. Kids Club is back in action on Thursday nights with arts and crafts to keep the kids busy. Finally, one of our premier golf events, Member-Member, rescheduled because of the rain, will be on the 25th, 26th and 27th. Lots going on!! Please note a change in the hours of operation for food and beverage in the Clubhouse starting this month: On Tuesdays and Sundays the Club will close at 6:00pm. Wednesday nights will feature a Bistro menu (the full a la carte menu will not be available). Get great food at great prices-- perfect for a quick meal without all of the trappings of a full menu. Be sure to make a reservation whenever you plan to use the club for events and to dine. We are in the process of forming a Hillendale Wine Society. The club has several members who have a keen interest in tasting and learning about the wines; it is our hope that those members support this effort. Akia Braswell, from our staff, will be heading this up. If you would like to join this new group, please her at: akia@hillendalecc.com. Our first event will be a wine tasting with hors d oeuvres in November. Details will follow. Mark your calendar for November 10th. It will be night of nostalgia featuring the ever- popular: The Fabulous Hubcaps. The group has been together since 1974 and has an extensive repertoire of music dedicated to the early days of rock and roll. Plan now to come and enjoy cocktails, a great Prime Rib dinner buffet, and listen and dance to some great rock and roll music. 9 TENNIS UPDATE Hello Everyone, Congratulations to those who participated in our Team Tennis Event... The pink team captained by Misty Doonis prevailed as our ultimate Champions, in our fun filled day of tennis and colorful team spirit. The 1st weekend of October will be the final official week of tennis at HCC. While the tennis shop will no longer be staffed full-time, the courts will remain open for the remainder of our Ladies Singles Interclub season ending on October 11th and the professional staff is available for outdoor lessons or clinics until we reach freezing temperatures. Please note that during that time, the courts will not be maintained daily, only on a as-needed basis. If you see anything that requires immediate attention, please Nicole and Dick to make us aware. We will respond to your observations as soon as possible. Once our tennis season comes to a close, Pete and I will offer indoor tennis lessons and clinics at Orchard Tennis Club. 10 BRAD NOVOTNY HEAD GREENS SUPERINDENT SUPERINTENDENT UPDATE Hillendale Members, As we enter into the Fall, our focus continues to be the recovery of our fairways. Courses with Ryegrass fairways in the area have all struggled this season due to the non-stop rain. Our waterlogged fairways don t allow the Ryegrass and Poa to root properly and we subsequently see a decline in density. We ve made progress with our seeding but the recovery has been slow due to the continuous rain. With drier weather and cooler temperatures, we will utilize numerous methods at once to incorporate seed into the soil and promote rapid germination. Although this has been an extremely challenging season for our fairways, which we will work diligently to repair, I have been very happy with the greens. They have fantastic drainage and have maintained health and playability through this difficult season. Our DryJect procedure on October 2 is a great tool we use to inject sand into the surface, improve drainage and rooting, while limiting the disruption to the playing surface. This is our final aerification practice of the season and will heal quickly so you can enjoy the greens for the remainder of the year. As the leaves begin to fall and the grass is still growing, please understand that it takes longer for us to prepare the course and may not be able to get every portion of the course blown clean before play arrives. On some days with higher winds, it may seem that we haven t blown any debris at all, when in fact we have. Please know that the leaves are a challenge for us to stay ahead of, all while maintaining the playing surfaces as we have all season. We will be working diligently to keep the course clean and playable, and hopefully the leaves come down quickly this season. If you have any questions regarding our fall recovery or our offseason plans, please don t hesitate to contact me. 11 GOLF PROFESSIONAL BRANDON GRECCO HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL UPDATE Dear Members, Last month I started off my write-up by wishing for drier days ahead in September, I think I will keep quiet in October! Despite Mother Nature s best efforts to keep us from playing in September, we were still able to have some great events to kick-off the fall season! Our Men s Hillendale Cup was one for the ages with Team Blenheim defeating Team Phoenix in a sudden-death playoff. Team Assistant Captain (and MVP) Paul Ashton put an exclamation point on the event with a 176-yard shot from the middle of the fairway on #9 that never left the stick and gave Team Blenheim the victory! Later that afternoon however, Team Phoenix got their revenge with a victory in our 2nd Annual Junior Hillendale Cup with Sasha Uzarowski taking home Team MVP honors! After that it started to rain, and rain, and rain some more! That didn t stop our ladies from completing their Hole Women s Club Championship with Suz Ford edging out Geri Smyth with a 1up victory on the 18th hole in absolutely terrible conditions! Congratulations to both ladies on a well-played match!in addition, congratulations to our 1st Flight Winner, Kathy Malone and our Consolation Flight Winner, Pat Erdly! Mother Nature allowed us to get in our Junior Golf Closing Day and Family Tournament as well! All of our juniors and their parents had a great day of golf with a fun pizza party and awards banquet following play. The Professional Staff would like to recognize and congratulate our 2018 Junior Club Champion, Luke Murnane. We are looking forward to your continued growth in the game and expect to see you competing for The Men s Club Championship very soon! Our Women s 9-Hole Club Championship was able to get started with our Round 1 matches, but unfortunately, the weather forced us to postpone our Final Round Matches until Wednesday, October 3rd with Pat Erdly vs. Gail Blauvelt in our Championship Match and Cyndi Breitzka vs. Donna Nazelrod inour Consolation Flight Match. Good luck ladies! The month was capped off by our 2018 Bill Smith Legacy Open on Sunday, September 30th. It was a great event to recognize Bill Smith and his family for their 40+ year commitment as members of Hillendale Country Club! The weather was beautiful and a great day was enjoyed by all! As they say, every cloud has a silver lining; ours is that October stands to be one of the busiest months ever at Hillendale! We have plenty of great events left and sign-ups are open!
