Coming off its first Ivy League win and its best defensive effort of the season last weekend vs. Dartmouth, Cornell mproved to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference. The Crimson, fresh off its conference bye week, has lost four of its last five contests to slip to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. HARVARD: Although official Ivy League play began in 1956, the Cornell and Harvard rivalry dates back nearly as far as both teams lacrosse programs, as the two squads first squared off in the 1895 season. The Big Red won that first meeting, 2-1, and has dominated the series ever since, holding a overall record against the Crimson. 3 Last Meeting Harvard 12, Cornell 8 April 9, 2016 Schoellkopf Field Ithaca, N.Y. ITHACA, N.Y. Cornell men s lacrosse fell, 12-8, in a back-and-forth battle with Harvard at Schoellkopf Field. Neither team led by more than two through the first three quarters, but the Crimson outscored the Big Red, 4-1, in the final period to earn the victory. Overall I was really pleased with the effort, said Matt Kerwick, the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Lacrosse. I thought the guys played as hard as they could. The execution wasn t great at times. I thought we had a lot of really good opportunities but couldn t bury the ball. Tip your cap to their goalie. I thought he played an excellent game. We need to continue to work on our shooting and finishing the ball. I think it was a heck of a lacrosse game It was a scrap all the way through. Freshman Ryan Bray led Cornell with two goals and John Edmonds finished with one goal and one assist as the only mulit-point scorers for the Big Red. In total, nine different Cornell players found the scoring column. Domenic Massimilian went 20-for-24 (.833) on the faceoff with a career-high 17 ground balls with no turnovers. He also scored just his second goal of the season, giving Cornell its only lead of the contest with 7:49 to play in the third quarter. Harvard was led by Will Walker with three goals and Devin Dwyer with two goals and two assists. Cornell had the edge in shots (40-38), and ground balls (38-27). The Big Red also converted 1-of-4 man-up chances, while the team s man-down defense held its seventh opponent this season without a goal (0-2). Both teams put 25 shots on goal and both team s goalies played extremely well with Harvard s Robert Shaw and the Big Red s Brennan Donville finishing with 17 saves and 13 saves, respectively. The Crimson had eight fewer turnovers (15-7), with nearly half of Cornell s turnovers being caused by Harvard (7). In the third period we had three or four turnovers that were unforced and gave them life, said Kerwick. I thought even though we scored four in that quarter, we turned it over on simple exchanges. It s one thing when we turn it over feeding the crease. We don t mind those, but when you have a turnover that s a simple exchange on the perimeter that can hurt you in a tight game. FLETCHER S FIVE GOALS: Freshman Connor Fletcher had a hand in six of Cornell s nine goals vs. Penn with five goals and one assist. 4 Matt Kerwick was named the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Men s Lacrosse at Cornell University on June 11, Kerwick, who served in the position on an interim basis during the 2014 season, became the 11th head coach in the programs 122-year history. One of just four current head coaches to take three different teams to the NCAA tournament, Kerwick has led Cornell to a combined record of (10-8 Ivy), two Ivy League championships, and two appearances in the NCAA tournament. He has coached 18 All-Ivy selections nine All-Americans, one Ivy League Player of the Year and one Ivy League Rookie of the Year. A coach that demands excellence in the classroom as well as on the field, Cornell has had five players named USILA Academic All-Americans, two Academic All-Ivy selections, one CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, one Senior CLASS Award winner, and one YRL Unsung Hero finalist. Kerwick spent the 2012 season with Georgetown, working as an associate head coach on Dave Urick s staff. Kerwick played for Urick at Hobart College, where he was a two-time All-American, won four consecutive Division III national championships, and was named the 1989 NCAA Tournament MVP. Prior to his time at Georgetown, Kerwick accumulated 15 years of head coaching experience with stops at Jacksonville, Hobart, Alfred and Randolph-Macon. During his time as head coach at those institutions, he helped his teams earn three NCAA tournament berths (Hobart - 2; Alfred 1), two Upstate Tournament appearances (Alfred) and one conference championship (Hobart). While at Hobart, he was named the 2002 Patriot League Coach of the Year and was also selected as the ECAC Co-Coach of the Year in As the head coach at Alfred, he was named both the 1996 Super Six Lacrosse League Coach of the Year Award and the1997 Babe Kraus Division III Coach of the Year. Kerwick graduated from Hobart in 1990 with a degree in economics. An all-around athlete, he was a four-year letter winner on both the Statesmen hockey and lacrosse teams, serving as captain for both squads as a senior. Following graduation, he played for the MLL s Baltimore Thunder, earning an All-Star selection in Kerwick has strong ties to Cornell as both his parents Thomas and the late Patricia Kerwick, as well as his sister Ann, all graduated from Cornell. He resides in Skaneateles and he and his wife Mary have two sons, Thomas and Sean. SAVE STREAK: Christian Knight opened the 2017 season by registering at least 10 saves in six games, and in seven consecutive games dating back to the 2015 season finale. That was the longest doubledigit save streak of his career, and the longest by any Big Red goalie since Justin Cynar stopped 10+ shots in eight consecutive games during the 2000 season. IVY OPENERS: The Big Red opened the 62nd season of Ivy League lacrosse with a 17-8 loss to Yale on March 18. Since the conference began play in the 1956 season, the Big Red has posted a record in Ivy League openers, including winning 16 of its last 18, dating back to the 1999 season when it fell to the Bulldogs, 7-6. More often than not, Cornell has met either Yale or Harvard in the conference opener, playing a different school on only six occasions. The recipient is someone that the coaches feel demonstrates a blue-collar approach to the game of lacrosse; he is driven and selfless, not the most talented player on the field, but consistently the hardest worker. BUCZEK S BACK: Former Cornell men s lacrosse great Connor Buczek 15 joined the Big Red staff as a volunteer assistant prior to the 2016 season. Buczek, a recipient of a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, is currently a student in Cornell s Johnson Graduate School of Management. One of the best business school s in the country, Buczek is in rare company, as one of just two individuals, and the only one from Cornell, to be admitted directly from undergraduate studies. FAMILY TIES: Head Coach Matt Kerwick s parents Thomas and the late Patricia, as well as his sister Ann, all graduated from Cornell. Andrew Keith s brother, Thomas 13, was an All-American long-stick midfielder for the Big Red, earning four varsity letters. Ryan Matthews cousin Matt Sutherland played lacrosse at Cornell. Sam Welch s parents, Patrick 85 and Ruth Welch 87, are both former Big Red athletes.
