3 Last Meeting No. 5 Cornell 12, Lehigh 3 March 15, 2006 Schoellkopf Field Ithaca, N.Y. ITHACA, N.Y. The Big Red continued its dominance on defense, limiting Lehigh to three goals in a 12-3 victory over the Mountain Hawks at Schoellkopf Field on March 15, Junior netminder Matt McMonagle made 10 saves and Cornell held Lehigh without a goal for the final 28:05 in improving to 4-0 for the first time under head coach Jeff Tambroni. The Big Red defense held an opponent to three goals or less for the third time in four games, giving up lone scores in the first three periods before holding the Mountain Hawks scoreless for the long stretch spanning the third and fourth. McMonagle was again impressive for Cornell, saving five shots in both halves, including several acrobatic stops in the middle of the first half as Cornell took control. Eric Pittard controlled the offense with a career-high four assists, while both Derek Haswell and David Mitchell recorded hat tricks. Haswell was also credited with a helper. Brian Clayton added two goals and an assist, and both Joe Boulukos and Rocco Romero had multi-point games with a goal and an assist. Boulukos won 7-of-12 faceoffs, with Mike Pisco registering a team-high five ground balls. Stephen Marino had two assists for Lehigh, while the offense spread its three goals around to three different players. The Mountain Hawks starting attack did not have a goal in the contest and got off just four shots all night. Jeff King had a game-high nine ground balls, while Eric Spirko tallied six saves in his first career start. Cornell continued its run of never trailing this season (240 minutes of lacrosse), getting on the scoreboard five minutes in when Pittard found Boulukos to make it 1-0 on a man-up goal, one of three on the day for the Big Red. Richard Cornetta s goal tied the game 1:07 later, but that only triggered a 6-0 Cornell run that included both even strength and man-up goals for both Mitchell and Haswell. Freshman Max Seibald got Cornell the lead for good at the 7:33 mark of the period, and when Mitchell scored on Pittard s second assist of the night with 6:53 left on the clock in the second period, Cornell was up 7-1. Just 1:55 into the second half, Michael Zurfluh scored to get Lehigh back within 8-3, but that would be the last shot that would find its way past McMonagle. The junior made five consecutive saves as Lehigh was held off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Cornell out-shot Lehigh 29-18, including 17-8 in the first 30 minutes, and narrowly won the ground ball battle Lehigh held a slim advantage in face-offs (10-9), but went 0-for-3 on man-up situations, while Cornell cashed in on 3-of-4 opportunities.
