2 Head Coach Andy Copelan Ninth Season Bucknell CAA Coach of the Year The 2017 season is Andy Copelan s ninth at the helm of the Fairfield University men s lacrosse team. He has posted a (.586) record with the Stags and owns an 11-year NCAA Division I head coaching record of (.578). Copelan was named the team s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Including this spring s preseason rankings, Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan s nine years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-ranked foe in seven of his campaigns with the Stags. Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the nationally-prominent Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags have made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to their first-ever CAA Championship Game. Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in In two seasons with the CAA, the Stags have collected 14 All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox 18 and 2016 Rookie and co-player of the Year nods for Colin Burke 19. Fairfield student-athletes also continued to gain the national and regional spotlight in Burke and TJ Neubauer 16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season. Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. He was the 10th Stag during Copelan s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks. Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from , including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan s 2013 club recorded the Stags first-ever victory over the nation s top-ranked team with a triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game. Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield. Signs of the Stags return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in Fairfield has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure. Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the MAAC Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth. After his stint at Marist, Copelan held an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland from , rising to the offensive coordinator position for his last campaign with the Terps. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Copelan s three seasons, highlighted by a trip to the 2006 Final Four. With Copelan as recruiting coordinator, Inside Lacrosse ranked the Terps 2007 incoming class as the second best in the nation, and the 2008 class was tabbed as the third best in the country Game Notes 2 Fairfield University Men s Lacrosse

Brent Adams added two goals for the Stags, with Logan Rausse and John Snellman each netting one goal and Max Trunz distributing a pair of assists. Charlie Cipriano made 12 saves in the cage, including four in the fourth quarter. Penn State was led by two goals from Chris Hogan, most recently of the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. Currently, 25 Division I players own an active point streak of at least 20 consecutive contests. The list is headed by Connor Cannizarro of Denver at 47 straight games. Of the 25 student-athletes with an active stretch, Burke is one of seven whose scoring streak spans his entire collegiate career. Duke s Justin Guterding tops that list with at least one point in all 44 games of his career with the Blue Devils. These lists exclude active streaks from Vermont s Ian MacKay (46 games) and Saint Joseph s Mike Rastivo (38 games), both of whom are expected to miss the entire 2017 campaign due to injury. Stiff Competition The four teams that have defeated the Stags this season are a combined 18-5 thus far in All four teams have been among the top 15 in the USILA Coaches Poll in various weeks throughout the spring. Per the NCAA report containing games played on March 13, the Stags schedule to date is ranked as the ninth toughest in the nation by opponent win percentage (.621). Lucky 13 Fairfield s 13 goals scored at Bucknell on Feb. 18 matched the Stags 2016 season high attained in the wins over Georgetown and Quinnipiac. The last time Fairfield scored more than 13 goals was a 15-4 home win over Manhattan on Feb. 21, Sharing the Scoring Prior to the win at Bucknell, the last time at least 12 Stags scored in a game was on April 3, 2010, when 13 different players notched a point in a 13-4 win at Bellarmine. Becoming a Regular Occurrence The Stags have won back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association regular season titles in their first two seasons as a member of the conference. Previously in the program s 25-year varsity history, the Stags took home three straight regular season titles in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference from and earned a share of the Great Western Lacrosse League regular season title in both 2002 and 2005 en route to two trips to the NCAA postseason. 9 Game 1: #20 Fairfield at Richmond #20 Stags Fall in Season Opener at Richmond Ford, Burke and Panepinto each score in 2017 debut RICHMOND, Va. Fairfield University men s lacrosse team dropped a 15-3 decision to host Richmond in its 2017 season opener on saturday, Feb. 11. Travis Ford, Colin Burke and Nico Panepinto had the Stags trio of goals, while Charlie Horning and Dylan Beckwith each handed out an assist for the visitors. Fairfield (0-1) came into the contest ranked No. 20 in the USILA Preseason Coaches Poll and as high as No. 17 in national preseason prognostications. Richmond (1-0) entered the season unranked but receiving votes from the USILA and was ranked as high as No. 15 on other national ledgers. #20 Fairfield (0-1) at Richmond (1-0) Date: Feb 11, 2017 Attendance: 476 SCORE Total Fairfield Richmond Fairfield GOALS: Burke 1; Panepinto 1; Ford 1. A 1-0 lead was Fairfield s only advantage of the contest as Ford s first career tally staked the Stags to a lead at 8:26 in the first quarter. The extra-man marker was set up by a Horning assist. Horning, who had 11 goals and 14 assists last season, extended his streak to 15 consecutive games with a point after his helper this afternoon. Burke s goal came in the final minute of the first frame as he converted a feed from Beckwith to rattle the cage. The 2017 CAA Preseason Player of the Year has totaled a point in all 18 games of his collegiate career after netting his first goal of the young campaign. Burke s tally, which cut the Richmond lead to 3-2, marked Fairfield s last goal for a span of over 11 minutes as the Spiders opened up an 8-2 advantage. At that juncture, Panepinto won a scramble for a ground ball on the door step, scooping and scoring to send the Stags into the locker room facing an 8-3 deficit. The Stags, however, were unable to score in the second half against the Spiders.
