2 Head Coach Andy Copelan 10th Season Bucknell CAA Coach of the Year The 2018 season is Andy Copelan s 10th at the helm of the Fairfield University men s lacrosse team. He has posted a (.564) record with the Stags and owns an overall NCAA Division I head coaching record of (.561). Copelan was named the program s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan s nine years on the sidelines and defeated a nationally-rank foe in eight of his nine campaigns with the Stags. Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the nationally-prominent Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags have made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to their first-ever CAA Championship Game. Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in In three seasons with CAA Lacrosse, the Stags have collected 20 All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox 18 and 2016 Rookie and co-player of the Year nods for Colin Burke 19. Fairfield student-athletes also continue to gain the national and regional spotlight. Burke and TJ Neubauer 16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions in 2016 with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season. Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. Neubauer was the highest-drafted Stag since Greg Downing 07 was tabbed as the sixth overall pick and only First Round selection in program history in Neubauer was the 10th Stag during Copelan s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks. The 2014 edition of the club boasted a final record of 12-4, tying the program s single-season wins mark. The campaign began with a record-setting 7-0 start and included the team s first-ever ECAC Lacrosse League Regular Season Championship and a trip to ECAC Championship Game. Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from , including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan s 2013 club recorded the Stags first-ever victory over the nation s top-ranked team with an overtime triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game. Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield. The Stags had 39 student-athletes earn All- ECAC Academic Team honors under Copelan s tutelage, including a program-high 10 honorees in In 2015, Max Buchanan 15 and Tristan Sperry 15 collected USILA Scholar All-America distinctions following their senior campaigns. Signs of the Stags return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in Fairfield has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure. Fairfield is the second head coaching stop on Copelan s resume, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth. Game 5 2 Fairfield vs. Stony Brook

3 The Matchup: Fairfield vs. Stony Brook Scouting Stony Brook The Stony Brook University Seawolves come to Rafferty Stadium looking for their first win of the spring following an 0-4 start. Most recently, Stony Brook dropped a 14-2 contest to visiting Hofstra on Tuesday evening. The Seawolves were tabbed for second behind current national #1 Albany in the America East Preseason Coaches Poll following a 7-7 campaign in Chris Pickel Jr. led the Stony Brook attack through February with a teambest eight goals. Tom Haun has also racked up eight points by way of four goals and four assists. Haun is the leading scorer from 2017 among returners after compiling 23 goals and 14 assists in his freshman campaign. Seven different Seawolves have taken at least one draw this spring to a cumulative.304 win percentage. The majority of the attempts have gone to Tristan Dowd, who is 20-for-61 (.328) on faceoffs with three ground balls. A trio of goalkeepers has split the first 240 minutes in the cage. Ryan Erler has logged the majority of the time, posting a goals against average and.380 save percentage. Collectively, Erler, Michael Bollinger and Brandon Maciejewski have tallied a GAA and.370 save percentage on the year. All-Time Series vs. Stony Brook (Stony Brook leads 4-3) After Fairfield s three straight wins against the Seawolves in 2002, 2012 and 2014, Stony Brook has come away with a victory in each of the last three seasons to take a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series. None of the prior seven meetings have been decided by more than three goals. Date Location Result 3/18/2001 Stony Brook, N.Y. L, /17/2002 Fairfield, Conn. W, /18/2012 Fairfield, Conn. 4 KEEPING UP WITH THE COMPETITION The Stags 2018 opponents went in the month of February. The Fairfield schedule features four teams ranked in the current USILA Coaches Poll and Maverik Media Poll. See below for the complete weekly rankings from three major national outlets. Opponent Current Record USILA Ranking Media Ranking Vermont at Saint Joseph s at Rutgers Hartford Stony Brook Quinnipiac Yale Penn State 2-2 RV RV NJIT at Villanova at Delaware* 3-0 RV RV at Hofstra* Drexel* UMass* at Towson* RV Scoring Streaks With his second consecutive hat trick on Tuesday against Hartford, Joe Rodrigues has rattled the cage in nine straight games dating back to last spring. That stretch includes seven multi-goal efforts, highlighted by a career-best five markers last April at Drexel. The longest active point streak for a Stag is a 15-game run for Dylan Beckwith. Beckwith, who posted at least one goal or assist in each of the final 11 games of 2017, kept the streak alive with career highs of four goals and six total points against the Hawks. Rodrigues and Beckwith currently share the team lead with 11 points apiece. Rodrigues, who patrolled the midfield for three seasons prior to moving to attack this spring, tops the team with nine goals while Beckwith is the squad s top facilitator with six assists. X Marks the Spot Will Fox currently ranks 13th in the nation with a.632 faceoff percentage (60-for-95). His 9.25 ground balls per game currently slot him atop the CAA and fifth in Division I. Fox s.810 win percentage (17-for-21) in the win at Saint Joseph s is the fifth-best single-game mark in the nation this season (minimum 20 attempts) and the best by a Stags faceoff man since Michael Roe had a 20-for- 23 (.870) day against Vermont in In addition, with 14 ground balls picked up against Saint Joseph s, Fox matched the known program record set in a win over Holy Cross in 2002 by Fairfield and Major League Lacrosse faceoff standard bearer Peter Vlahakis 04. Senior CLASS Award Fox has been recognized as one of 20 candidates nationwide for the Senior CLASS Award, and honor focused on the total student-athlete and encouraging students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To go along with his prowess on the lacrose field, Fox is a Dean s List and CAA Commissioner s Honor Roll student as a Psychology major. He is one of Fairfield s representatives on the MAAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. What s Trending In each of the last two seasons, Fairfield and Stony Brook have played to an identical 9-6 final score. Including those two meetings, the Stags are 5-5 in their last 10 outings in which neither team reaches double figures on the scoreboard. Climbing the Charts After a two-goal outing at Rutgers, Colin Burke rose to 10th in Fairfield Lacrosse history with 75 career markers. Burke is also currently 14th in Stags history with 110 career points, 12 shy of joining the all-time top 10 on that list. When Burke eclipsed the 100-point mark with three goals and three assists in Fairfield s 2017 season-ending win over Delaware - his 31st career game - he became the fourth fastest to attain the milestone in program history. 5 Man-Down Markers Spencer Noonan s first career goal in the season opener agaisnt Vermont was Fairfield s first man-down marker since Colin McLinden 15 converted while the Stags were shorthanded in a CAA win at UMass on April 4, Defensemen Getting Offensive Noonan s tally also continued a recent trend of the Stags poles getting into the scoring column. In 2017, Andrew Eidenshink handed out two assists as a defenseman while J.B. Smith scored a goal from the LSM position. The prior spring, Matt Borda did the honors with a coast-to-coast goal in a 12-7 win at Colgate. The Rookie Rundown The Fairfield roster includes 13 newcomers: 11 true freshman, redshirt freshman Tyler Lichter and sophomore transfer Jake Tymon. Six of the 13 newcomers (Curran, Strough, Labetti, McAuliffe, Elmquist and Friedt) have made their Fairfield debuts thus far in The baker s dozen of new student-athletes represent every position on the field as well as nine different states. The newcomers that traveled the farthest to get to campus are Max McGuire from Del Mar, California and Lucas Pedersen from Bainbridge Island, Washington. Also of note, freshman Zane Friedt is the first-ever NCAA Division I men s lacrosse player to hail from the state of Idaho. Fairfield vs. Ranked Opponents The Feb. 24 visit to Rutgers was Fairfield s first meeting this spring with a nationally-ranked opponent. Following last April s win over #15 Towson at Rafferty Stadium, Fairfield has defeated at least one ranked opponent (in the USILA Coaches Poll) in eight of Andy Copelan s nine prior seasons at the helm of the Stags. Highlighted by an upset win at #1 Denver in 2013, the Stags have recorded 10 victories over ranked foes, including four wins over top-10 programs, during the Andy Copelan era (2009-present). 8 Game 1: Vermont 12, Fairfield 5 Stags Stopped by Vermont in 2018 Season Opener Rodrigues nets two goals to lead the Fairfield attack FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield University Men s Lacrosse opened the 2018 campaign this afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium, dropping a 12-5 decision to visiting Vermont. Joe Rodrigues netted two goals to pace five Stags that registered points on the day. Fairfield falls to 0-1 with the loss, and Vermont improves to 3-0 on the season after sweeping a southern road trip last weekend at Furman and Mercer. Joining Rodrigues in the scoring column were Travis Ford, Drew Murray and Spencer Noonan with one goal apiece, while Dylan Beckwith handed out an assist. The visiting Catamounts came out firing at Rafferty Stadium, netting the contest s first eight goals. Noonan ended the drought for the Stags with his first career goal. The senior defenseman corralled a ground ball off of a faceoff and went coast-to-coast for the marker less than two minutes before the half. The tally was also Fairfield s first man-down goal since Colin McLinden converted while the Stags were shorthanded in a win at UMass on April 4, After a quick Vermont tally to start the third quarter, Fairfield put together back-to-back goals for the first time, starting with Murray finishing a pass from Beckwith to cut the deficit to 9-2. Less than 70 seconds later, the Stags struck again as Rodrigues a Second Team All-CAA selection last spring rattled the cage for the first time to make it a 9-3 contest with 12:15 remaining in the third. Neither team would score until the final stanza, when Vermont converted off of the opening draw to extend the margin back to Once again, it was Rodrigues who offered the rebuttal as he withstood a push from behind to finish off his second goal of the day. However, the Catamounts responded with back-to-back markers to thwart the potential for a Fairfield run. In the closing minutes of action, Ford who hit the post and the crossbar on consecutive shots earlier in the game found the back of the cage for the first time in 2018 to round out the final score at Will Fox handled the duties at the faceoff X, starting his senior campaign with a 14-for-21 showing with a team-leading seven groundballs. Beckwith and Adam Riestis each added three ground balls in the midfield. Sean McKee and Sam Gindhart split the effort in the cage for the Stags, both making their collegiate debut today on Conway Field. McKee made three saves in the opening half of action and Gindhart turned away six shots after the intermission. Vermont was led by three goals and two assists from All-America attackman Ian MacKay, who was the 2016 America East Offensive Player of the Year but missed all of 2017 due to injury. Ben French also netted a hat trick for the Catamounts. Nick Washuta made 13 saves over the first 54:33 of action to earn the win in goal, with Ryan Cornell stopping three shots to close out the day in relief. The Stags now begin a two-game road swing next Saturday, Feb. 17, with a noon visit to Saint Joseph s in Philadelphia. After a trip to Rutgers the following Saturday, the Stags start a six-game homestand on Tuesday, Feb. 27 against in-state foe Hartford.
