2 Head Coach Andy Copelan 10th Season Bucknell CAA Coach of the Year The 2018 season is Andy Copelan s 10th at the helm of the Fairfield University men s lacrosse team. He has posted an (.551) record with the Stags and owns an overall NCAA Division I head coaching record of (.550). Copelan was named the program s third head coach in varsity history on August 25, 2008 and has returned the Stags to the national conversation. Fairfield has entered the USILA national rankings in seven of Copelan s nine previous years on the sidelines and defeated a nationallyrank foe in eight of his nine prior campaigns with the Stags. Copelan led the Stags into a new era beginning in 2015, as Fairfield joined the Colonial Athletic Association. The Stags have made an immediate impact on the CAA, winning back-to-back regular season titles. Fairfield hosted the 2015 CAA Championship on newly-constructed Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. In 2016, the Stags advanced to their first-ever CAA Championship Game. Copelan was tabbed as the CAA Coach of the Year in In three seasons with CAA Lacrosse, the Stags have collected 20 All-CAA honors, highlighted by 2015 Rookie of the Year recognition for Will Fox 18 and 2016 Rookie and co-player of the Year nods for Colin Burke 19. Fairfield student-athletes also continue to gain the national and regional spotlight. Burke and TJ Neubauer 16 were USILA All-America Honorable Mentions in 2016 with Neubauer also garnering All-New England First Team distinction for the third straight season. Neubauer was also drafted by the Rochester Rattlers in the fourth round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft. Neubauer was the highest-drafted Stag since Greg Downing 07 was tabbed as the sixth overall pick and only First Round selection in program history in Neubauer was the 10th Stag during Copelan s tenure to be drafted or signed as a free agent into the MLL ranks. The 2014 edition of the club boasted a final record of 12-4, tying the program s single-season wins mark. The campaign began with a record-setting 7-0 start and included the team s first-ever ECAC Lacrosse League Regular Season Championship and a trip to ECAC Championship Game. Fairfield made four consecutive ECAC postseason appearances from , including three trips to the ECAC Championship Game. Along the way, the program earned several landmark victories. Copelan s 2013 club recorded the Stags first-ever victory over the nation s top-ranked team with an overtime triumph at No. 1 Denver, and the 2010 Fairfield team topped a Notre Dame club that went on to reach the NCAA National Championship Game. Copelan has seen his student-athletes excel in the classroom as well. During his stay at the helm, every student-athlete that has completed his eligibility has also earned a degree from Fairfield. The Stags had 39 student-athletes earn All-ECAC Academic Team honors under Copelan s tutelage, including a program-high 10 honorees in In 2015, Max Buchanan 15 and Tristan Sperry 15 collected USILA Scholar All-America distinctions following their senior campaigns. Signs of the Stags return to national prominence were immediate when Copelan took the reins for the 2009 season. His first team went 7-6 overall to earn the program s first winning record since 2005 and a winning mark (4-3) in the ECAC Lacrosse League for the first time since joining the league in Fairfield has continued its upward trend under Copelan; the Stags have never closed the year with a sub-.500 record overall or in conference play during his tenure. Fairfield is the second head coaching stop for Copelan, who was the youngest head coach in the nation when he was hired to lead Marist College in In his first season with the Red Foxes, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year following a MAAC Regular Season Championship and the program s first winning season in six years. In 2005, he led Marist to its first-ever NCAA postseason berth. His two-year run with the Red Foxes produced nine All-MAAC honorees, including 2004 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year Keith Detelj and 2005 Rookie of the Year Dan Needle. After his stint at Marist, Copelan held an assistant coaching position at the University of Maryland from , rising to the offensive coordinator position for his last campaign with the Terps. Maryland reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Copelan s three seasons, highlighted by a trip to the 2006 Final Four. Copelan also served as the recruiting coordinator for Maryland in his final two seasons, with great success. Inside Lacrosse ranked the Terps 2007 incoming class as the second best in the nation, and the 2008 class was dubbed as a thirdbest in the country. Individually, Copelan helped the Terps to secure six of 2008 s top 50 high school recruits. As a student-athlete, Copelan was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Bucknell University. He earned All-Patriot League accolades for his performance on the field in 2003 and was named to the league s Academic Honor Roll in each of his seasons with the Bison. Game 12 2 Fairfield at Hofstra

3 The Matchup: Fairfield vs. Hofstra Scouting Hofstra After a decisive 9-3 win over Towson in their CAA opener last Saturday, the Hofstra Pride enter the weekend with a record of 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the conference. 4 KEEPING UP WITH THE COMPETITION The Fairfield schedule features five teams ranked in the current USILA Coaches Poll and Maverik Media Poll. See below for the complete weekly rankings from three major national outlets. Opponent Current Record USILA Ranking Media Ranking Vermont at Saint Joseph s at Rutgers Hartford Stony Brook Quinnipiac Yale Penn State NJIT at Villanova at Delaware* at Hofstra* 5-4 RV RV Drexel* UMass* RV at Towson* Up-Up, Down-Down Fairfield s special teams units rank among the best in the nation in The man-up squad currently leads the CAA and ranks eighth in all of NCAA Division I with a.516 success rate (16-for-31). The Stags man-up efficiency mark was bolstered by a 5-for-5 showing with the man advantage against visiting Stony Brook on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium on March 3. None of the seven teams with a better EMO success rate than the Stags have done so while earning as many man-up chances as Fairfield s 30 this spring. The Stags 16 total manup goals are just three behind Lehigh s 19 man-up tallies for the top spot in the nation. Individually, Jack Brennan leads the CAA with six man-up goals this spring. Matt Schmidt of Robert Morris and William Perry of North Carolina share the national lead with eight man-up scores apiece. Taylor Strough has added five man-up goals for the Stags, while eight of Colin Burke s team-leading 16 assists have been distributed on the advantage. Drew Murray has assisted on four man-up goals. The Stags man-down unit has also done its part, ranking first in the CAA and eighth in the nation with a.778 success rate, ceding only six goals in 27 man-down situations this season. In addition to his efforts helping to keep opponents off the board in these situations, LSM Spencer Noonan also scored a man-down goal in the season opener vs. Vermont - the first man-down marker by a Stag since Fairfield joins Duke, Robert Morris and UMass Lowell as the only teams in the nation ranked in the top 10 in both manup offense and man-down defense. The 2011 Stags had the best showings from both special teams units during Andy Copelan s tenure. (2009-present) That 2011 squad finished the year at.481 on the EMO (25-for-52) and at.758 playing man-down (15-for-62). X Marks the Spot Will Fox currently ranks 19th in the nation with a.581 win percentage (137-for-226) as the Stags primary faceoff man. His 6.55 ground balls per game currently slot him third in the CAA and 14th in all of Division I. Fox s.810 win percentage (17-for-21) in the Feb. 17 win at Saint Joseph s was the best by a Stags faceoff man (minimum 20 attempts) since Michael Roe had a 20-for-23 (.870) day against Vermont in His 14 ground balls in that game also matched the known program record set in a win over Holy Cross in 2002 by Fairfield and Major League Lacrosse faceoff standard bearer Peter Vlahakis 04. For his career, Fox ranks second behind Vlahakis (.627) with a.564 win percentage (486-for-862). He is also second all-time behind Vlahakis 620 total wins and his 214 career ground balls are second behind Vlahakis 290. Senior CLASS Award Fox has been recognized as one of 20 candidates nationwide for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor focused on the total student-athlete and encouraging students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Along with his prowess on the lacrosse field, Fox is a Dean s List and CAA Honor Roll student as a Psychology major. He is one of Fairfield s representatives on the MAAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Rising to the Challenge Travis Ford s four-goal day against #7/8 Villanova matched his career high established in last spring s double overtime loss at #15 Yale. In total, 13 of Ford s 27 career goals and 15 of his 31 career points have come against nationally-ranked competition. USILA DIVISION I COACHES POLL (APRIL 2) 1. Albany 2. Maryland 3. Yale 4. 5 Not Settled in Sixty Fairfield s overtime loss at #7/8 Villanova on March 24 was the 24th overtime contest in the Stags varsity history. Fairfield is all-time when a game goes beyond 60 minutes and 8-5 under Head Coach Andy Copelan. Six of the Stags last seven overtime games have been against USILA nationally-ranked teams. Climbing the Charts Colin Burke s seven-point day in the March 20 win over NJIT matched his previous career high attained twice in 2016 en route to CAA Rookie and co-player of the Year honors. In the midst of his junior campaign, Colin Burke has risen to 10th in Fairfield history with 83 career goals and 48 career assists. He also ranked ninth on the career points list with 130. This season, Burke has scored 11 goals with a team-leading 16 assists. He ranks third on the team in goals and second in points. Rafferty Records Fairfield and Penn State established several Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium records in their contest on March 17. Their 30 combined goals were the most in the four-year history of the venue as well as the most goals scored in any Fairfield game since a loss at #12 Notre Dame on April 22, Joe Rodrigues and the Nittany Lions Mac O Keefe each scored six goals to share a new Rafferty Stadium single-game mark. O Keefe also dished out two assists for the visitors to total a venue-best eight total points. Four Nets Six In addition to grabbing a share of the Rafferty Stadium record, the six goals for Joe Rodrigues on March 17 against Penn State fell one marker shy of tying the Fairfield Lacrosse single-game record. The current program standard of seven goals was established by Spencer Steele in 1999 against Saint Joseph s and matched by Rob Scipioni against Vermont in Eight in a Quarter Fairfield s eight-goal outburst in the fourth quarter against Penn State was the Stags highest scoring stanza since netting eight goals in the third frame of a 19-6 win over Vermont on Feb. 27, In between those two occurrences, the Stags played exactly 1,000 quarters of lacrosse (not including overtime periods) without netting eight goals in a frame. Stag Watching The Stags Sports Network on Facebook Live is the flagship broadcast entity for Fairfield Lacrosse this season. A total of 14 men s and women s lacrosse home games from Rafferty Stadium are on the slate to stream for free at Facebook.com/ FairfieldUAthletics. The Fairfield men s home games against Penn State on March 17 and UMass on April 21 have been tabbed by the Lax Sports Network as the CAA Game of the Week. Up Next The Stags return to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium to host Drexel on Saturday, April 14 at noon as the front-end of the annual Fairfield Lacrosse Military Appreciation Day doubleheader. 9 Game 1: Vermont 12, Fairfield 5 Stags Stopped by Vermont in 2018 Season Opener Rodrigues nets two goals to lead the Fairfield attack FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield University Men s Lacrosse opened the 2018 campaign this afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium, dropping a 12-5 decision to visiting Vermont. Joe Rodrigues netted two goals to pace five Stags that registered points on the day. Fairfield falls to 0-1 with the loss, and Vermont improves to 3-0 on the season after sweeping a southern road trip last weekend at Furman and Mercer. Joining Rodrigues in the scoring column were Travis Ford, Drew Murray and Spencer Noonan with one goal apiece, while Dylan Beckwith handed out an assist. The visiting Catamounts came out firing at Rafferty Stadium, netting the contest s first eight goals. Noonan ended the drought for the Stags with his first career goal. The senior defenseman corralled a ground ball off of a faceoff and went coastto-coast for the marker less than two minutes before the half. The tally was also Fairfield s first man-down goal since Colin McLinden converted while the Stags were shorthanded in a win at UMass on April 4, After a quick Vermont tally to start the third quarter, Fairfield put together back-toback goals for the first time, starting with Murray finishing a pass from Beckwith to cut the deficit to 9-2. Jack Brennan, Charlie Horning and Joe Rodrigues each scored two goals for the Stags on the day. Brennan added an assist to his two-goal day to ring up a career-best three points. Both of his markers came in man-up situations as Fairfield (1-4) went 5-for-5 on extra-man opportunities. Stony Brook would add five more in the second frame, however, with man-up goals by Brennan and Strough pushing the halftime score to 9-3 in favor of the Seawolves. Fairfield got on the board first after the intermission as Horning finished a Beckwith feed just 61 seconds into the third stanza. After nine scoreless minutes of action, Stony Brook struck with two goals in just seven ticks as Kaschalk scored and Tyler Anderson won the ensuing faceoff, carrying it coast-to-coast and rattling the cage for a goal. Fairfield responded in kind as Joe Rodrigues scored with the flag down with 1:15 left in the frame. However, the deficit proved insurmountable as time expired on an 11-9 final. This team hasn t had any quit in them since day one, said Head Coach Andy Copelan. But we all need to do a better job of transitioning what we do in practice and in film sessions to what we do on gameday. 14 Game 6: Fairfield 9, Quinnipiac 6 Strong Start Propels Stags to 9-6 Win Over Quinnipiac Fairfield nets the first six goals to top its in-state foe at Rafferty Stadium FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield University Men s Lacrosse scored the first six goals of the day against visiting Quinnipiac on Tuesday on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium and kept the Bobcats at arm s length en route to a 9-6 victory. Jack Brennan racked up a career-best five points to pilot the attack. Fairfield (2-4) snaps a three-game losing skid with its first home victory of the year, while the Bobcats fall to 2-3. We certainly didn t talk about today as a must win game and we haven t talked about being 1-4 going into the game all that much, said Head Coach Andy Copelan. In my heart of hearts, I expected us to be better than 1-4 after five games, but the analogy that we ve used is that we can t live in the rearview mirror right now. Everything has to be about the road ahead, and I was proud of the guys for having the ability to do that. Brennan netted a personal-best three goals and distributed two assists to account for his five points all of which came in the first half as the Stags built the 8-1 lead that they would ride to victory. Joe Rodrigues added two goals to extend his teamleading total to 13 markers on the year, and the quartet of Liam DaRos, Taylor Strough, Brendan Quinn and Charlie Curran each scored one. Also helping to facilitate the scoring were DaRos, Strough, Dylan Beckwith, Colin Burke and Charlie Horning with one assist apiece. Will Fox played his part in keeping Fairfield on the attack with a 14-for-19 showing at the faceoff X. Fox, who entered the day ranked sixth in the nation with 9.00 ground balls per game, maintained that CAA-leading average with nine more ground balls this afternoon. Fox won the first seven draws of the game as Fairfield built its 6-0 lead and came away with 10-of-11 first-half faceoffs in total. Jake Tymon also helped to control the action in the midfield with a career-best four ground balls and a caused turnover. At the other end of Conway Field, Sean McKee had his best game in the cage as a Stag with 13 saves compared to just six goals allowed. McKee made seven of his stops in the fourth quarter to squash the Bobcats late comeback attempt and also swiped three ground balls. Sean is an uber-talented player, and there has been something there all year long, Said Copelan of his first-year starting goalkeeper. Part of it is game experience. He has to go through those transformative moments both good and bad and as long as he can grind through and keep his eyes on the finish line, it s never going to be a talent shortage for Sean. I m proud of how he has responded and how the guys around him have responded. They haven t lost faith or confidence in him and, as a result, I think we re seeing a more confident Sean McKee out there. Quinnipiac spread out its scoring with six different Bobcats accounting for the team s six goals. Sam Witt had one of those markers as well as one assist to set the pace for the visitors. Joe Zukauskas played the majority of minutes in goal save for a 2:16 stretch in which he was spelled for an injury timeout and made 10 saves. Brennan played a role in the Stags first four goals netting two and assisting on two others as Fairfield took control of the first half action. The Stags went on to score the contest s first six markers while the defense kept Quinnipiac off the board for the first 23:25 of action. In total, Fairfield ran up an 8-1 advantage over the game s first 30 minutes to take that sizable lead into the intermission. Fairfield s six-goal second quarter including a pair of man-up goals just 59 seconds apart. Those markers finished by Brennan and Strough, respectively ran the Stags streak to seven consecutive conversions on extra-man opportunities. Fairfield went 5-for-5 on the EMO in Saturday s meeting with Stony Brook to post the first and only perfect game on the advantage (with a minimum of five chances) in the nation this spring. Quinnipiac found more success on the attack in the second half, but the Stags kept those scoring chances spread out over the final 30 minutes of action to maintain their lead. The Bobcats never trimmed the deficit to less than three goals, and DaRos added his first goal of the season for the Stags in the fourth quarter to punctuate the 9-6 victory. Quinnipiac outshot the Stags, 37-31, and the ground ball effort was even at Fairfield committed 11 turnovers to the Bobcats 12 giveaways, and the Stags were a perfect 22-for-22 on the clear while the visitors converted 19 of their 22 clearing attempts. The Stags are back in action on Saturday, March 10 for another in-state showdown as #10/11 Yale makes the trip to Rafferty Stadium for a 1 p.m. outing. Yale got on the board just seven seconds into the game as Mackie came away with the opening faceoff and started the Bulldogs on the run. The ball found the crosse of Jackson Morrill, who connected with Matt Gaudet for the game s first goal. After that initial outburst, the teams played scoreless lacrosse for nearly 14 minutes. The Stags ended that drought with Sheahan finishing a feed from Burke to capitalize on an extra-man opportunity and end the first quarter with the score knotted at 1-1. Once again, the second quarter saw the Bulldogs score first followed by a Fairfield response. For Yale, it was Lucas Cotler converting a feed from Jack Tigh. The Stags answered with Burke getting free on a pick set by Joe Rodrigues to uncork his fourth goal of the season. Yale struck early in the third quarter on a Sessa goal assisted by Reeves, and the tally remained at 3-2 in favor of the Bulldogs until the closing seconds of the stanza. The Stags appeared to have quelled a late Yale threat when Morrill s shot rang off the post, but the Sessa elevated to grab the rebound and send in home in one motion, extending the Bulldogs cushion to 4-2 with 8.7 seconds left in the period. Yale widened the gap 31 seconds into the final quarter on Reeves lone goal of the day, but Fairfield was quick to answer as Brennan got loose in front and sent home a pass from Burke to cut the deficit to 5-3 with 13:09 to go. The Stags would not score again, however, as Tigh added a pair of fourth-quarter markers and Sessa scored on the vacant cage with 62 seconds left to round out the final at 8-3 in favor of the visiting Bulldogs. Yale held a advantage in shots and a lead in ground balls. The Stags forced 16 Bulldogs turnovers while committing 11 giveaways. Both teams were nearly perfect on the clear with Fairfield converting 22-of-23 attempts and Yale posting an 18-for-19 mark. We continue to be a work in progress, but I thought the guys were ready to play today, said Head Coach Andy Copelan. 17 Game 9: Fairfield 12, NJIT 8 Burke Powers Attack in 12-8 Win over NJIT Junior matches career high with seven points in the midweek victory FAIRFIELD, Conn. Colin Burke matched his career high with seven points moving into the top-10 in Fairfield University Men s Lacrosse history to lead the Stags to a 12-8 win over the visiting New Jersey Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Burke, Joe Rodrigues and Taylor Strough all netted hat tricks for Fairfield in the victory. The win snaps a two-game losing streak for Fairfield (3-6), which concluded a program-record six-game homestand with today s outing against the Highlanders. I m really proud of our whole team, but in particular I thought that our attack was outstanding today, said Head Coach Andy Copelan. If they can continue to play like that, then we have a chance to be in every game. Burke s seven-point day matches his previous career high attained twice in 2016 en route to CAA Rookie and co-player of the Year honors. In today s effort, Burke scored four goals and tied another personal standard with three assists. Six of his points came in the first half as the Stags built the 8-3 halftime advantage that carried them to victory. With his performance, Burke passes his former teammate TJ Neubauer 16 to move into 10th on Fairfield s all-time scoring list with 127 career points. He is also currently 10th on the career goals list with 82 markers to his name. Rodrigues hat trick was a part of a five-point performance as the senior dished out two assists for the second multi-helper game of his career. His three goals moved him into the CAA lead with 22 and he now shares second place in the conference (with Drexel s Matthew Varian) with 26 points on the season. Since being held scoreless for the first time this season against Yale on March 10, Rodrigues has racked up 11 points in the last two games. Strough s hat trick is the first of his young collegiate career as well as the first three-point outing of his rookie campaign. Charlie Horning and Drew Murray added single goals for Fairfield. Murray, Dylan Beckwith and Will Fox each dished out an assist, and Jack Brennan factored into the scoring for the fifth straight game with a pair of helpers. The Stags were 2-for-2 on extra-man opportunities with Murray and Strough providing the finishes to improve to.556 (15-for-27) in man-up situations this spring. The Stags entered the day ranked ninth in the nation in man-up efficiency and now trail North Carolina by just one goal for the national lead with 15 total man-up tallies. In addition to notching his first career assist, Will Fox helped keep the offense on the field with a 15-for-21 performance at the faceoff X. Fox also scooped up five ground balls to pass fellow faceoff man Michael Roe 14 and move into second alltime at Fairfield with 203 career ground balls. Beckwith was also vital to the faceoff efforts with five ground balls from the wing. Rodrigues had a career-best six ground balls to extend several Fairfield possessions. Defensively, Sean McKee made nine saves in the cage to earn the win. The group in front of him was led by J.B. Smith, George Elmquist and Nick Panara, along with Jake Tymon and Spencer Noonan at the LSM spot. Adam Riestis, Samuel Murphy and Kendall Keahey pitched in as short-stick middies as the Stags limited an opponent to single-digit goals for the fourth time this season. We continue to get better, said Copelan. We have a big one coming up on Saturday and then conference play right around the corner. We have to make sure that, over the next week and a half, we re really buttoning up any deficiencies. But I like our group out there, it s a resilient bunch. Aaron Forster, Cole Robillard and Ryan Darrow scored two goals apiece for NJIT (0-10). Nick Marzullo and Alexzander Hunt split the effort in goal and each made eight saves. Up next, the Stags hit the road for the first time in a month with a trip to #7/8 Villanova (6-2) for a 3:30 p.m. opening faceoff on Saturday. Colonial Athletic Association play begins the following Saturday, March 31, with a noon faceoff at Delaware (3-4). 18 Game 10: #7/8 Villanova 13, Fairfield 12 (OT) Stags Rally Late But Fall in Overtime at #7/8 Villanova, Ford scores four goals, Beckwith tallies five points for Fairfield VILLANOVA, Pa. Trailing with just 88 seconds to play at #7/8 Villanova, Fairfield University Men s Lacrosse got back-to-back goals from Joe Rodrigues and Dylan Beckwith to tie the Wildcats, 12-12, and force overtime. However, it was the nationally-ranked hosts who struck in the extra session to escape with decision. Travis Ford matched his career high with four goals for the Stags (3-7). All of his tallies came in the second half. Fellow sophomore Beckwith had a five-point day with two goals and three assists. Colin Burke also handed out three assists, moving into 10th place on the Fairfield Lacrosse all-time list with 48 career helpers. With his effort today, Burke also jumped into ninth on the career points list with 130, eclipsing the 128 points racked up by Tristan Sperry 15 in his four-year tenure at Fairfield. In today s game, the Stags also got goals from Jack Brennan, Taylor Strough, Drew Murray, Kendall Keahey and Charlie Horning. Brennan also handed out his seventh assist of the spring. In the midfield, Will Fox went 17-fo-28 on the dot with four ground balls. Jake Tymon also gathered a pair of ground balls, and Burke picked up three to extend possession in the offensive end for the Stags. Max McGuire made his collegiate debut in the cage, registering eight saves with a pair of ground balls. J.B. Smith and George Elmquist each had two caused turnovers to lead the defense. Danny Seibel and Keegan Khan shouldered the offensive load for Villanova (7-2) with six goals apiece. Christian Cuccinello distributed four assists for the Wildcats and Colin Crowley had three. Nick Testa made 11 saves to earn the win in the cage. After two early saves for McGuire, the Stags started the scoring with Murray s fifth of the season. Following nearly 11 minutes of scoreless action, Seibel rattled the cage for Villanova to end the first quarter with the contest tied at 1-1. Fairfield struck first again in the second frame as Brennan cashed in on the opening possession of the quarter. However, his 11 tally of the year ended the Stags scoring in the period as Villanova ran off five in a row to head into the locker room holding a 6-2 advantage. The dry spell did not continue through the intermission, as Ford netted his first of the day just 51 seconds in. After Fox came away with the ensuing faceoff, it was Keahey potting his first of the year to cut the margin to 6-4. The next two strikes went to Villanova to open up an 8-4 advantage, but the Stags were quick to respond. After Horning s conversion of a Burke pass cut the deficit to 8-5, Fairfield got on the run on a faceoff win by Fox and ground ball pickup for Hunter Keech. The ball settled in the crosse of Burke, who connected with Beckwith for a quick score. Ford was next to light the lamp, shaving the deficit all the way down to 8-7 and force a Villanova timeout with 3:30 to play in the third. A faceoff violation out of the stoppage had the Stags back on the back, and a blast from Ford soon had the game back at level pegging, tied at 8-8 entering the fourth quarter. Villanova started the final frame with a man-up opportunity, which the Stags squashed as Tymon forced a Cuccinello turnover. Fairfield soon found itself on the advantage and, for the 16th time this spring, scored on the EMO as Strough s eighth of the spring put the Stags on top, 9-8, with 13:30 to go. Five minutes later, two quick strikes from Khan had Villanova back in front, 10-9, and Seibel added another to make it an 11-9 advantage with 4:40 remaining. After Elmquist created a turnover, Ford finished a pass from Beckwith to trim the difference to 11-10, but Villanova struck again to take a edge with 1:28 remaining. After Tymon won a battle to come away with the ensuing faceoff, Rodrigues scored off a Brennan assist with 1:11 to go. Beckwith then nabbed Fox s next faceoff win and went coast-to-coast to net the equalizer with 56 seconds remaining in regulation. McGuire preserved the deadlock with a save just before the final horn to send the contest into overtime tied at The extra session lasted just 33 seconds, however, as Villanova won the opening faceoff and called a timeout. The first shot of the frame was the game-winner as Seibel s sixth of the day staked the Wildcats to a win. Up next, Fairfield opens CAA action at Delaware with a noon faceoff on Saturday, March 31. The Blue Hens are 3-4 on the year entering a trip to #11 Rutgers tonight beginning at 7 p.m. The Stags will also visit Hofstra before returning to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium to host Drexel on Saturday, April 14 at noon as the front-end of the annual Fairfield Lacrosse Military Appreciation Day doubleheader. 19 Game 11: Delaware 11, Fairfield 10 Stags Edged at Delaware, 11-10, in CAA Opener Rodrigues nets a hat trick in conference clash Fairfield (3-8, 0-1 CAA) vs. Delaware (4-5, 1-0 CAA) Date: Mar 31, 2018 Attendance: 732 PHILADELPHIA A goal with just 3:12 remaining was the difference as Fairfield University Men s Lacrosse was on the short side of an final in its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener this afternoon at Delaware. Joe Rodrigues led the Stags with a hat trick and an assist. Fairfield (3-8, 0-1 CAA) drops a one-goal decision on the road for the second straight week after falling in overtime 13-12, to then-#7/8 nationally-ranked Villanova last Saturday in Pennsylvania. After his four-point day, Rodrigues furthers his position as the Stags leading scorer for this spring with 26 goals and 31 total points. Travis Ford followed up a four-goal performance at Villanova with two markers this afternoon. Fairfield also got goals from Drew Murray, Jack Brennan, Colin Burke, Dylan Beckwith and Kendall Keahey. Murray and Brennan also each handed out one assist. On the other side of the field, Max McGuire made nine saves in his second career start in the Fairfield cage. Andrew Murrow returned to action and led the defense with two ground balls and a caused turnover, and Jake Tymon snatched up four ground balls from the LSM spot. Will Fox went 11-for-25 on the faceoff X with seven ground balls. He now ranks eighth on the Fairfield single-season list with 72 ground balls collected this spring. Delaware (4-5, 1-0 CAA) was led by four goals, including the game-winner, from Charlie Kitchen. Dean DiSimone also had a four-point performance with two goals and two assists. Matt DeLuca made 10 saves to earn the win in the cage. The squads traded goals for much of the first half as Keahey and Rodrigues provided the early tallies for the Stags. Ford would add a marker in the middle of the stanza and Rodrigues added his second goal in the closing seconds of the period as Fairfield took a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes of play, Delaware buried the first two goals of the second quarter, keeping the Stags off the board for nearly 11 minutes in the frame. However, Fairfield made up for lost time with three goals in a span of just 1:39 to surge back in front. Ford and Murray scored in rapid succession, then Beckwith picked off an outlet pass from DeLuca, turning a seemingly empty trip into a Burke goal as the junior juked a defender and the keeper to rattle the cage. Kitchen added a goal in the final minute, and DeLuca kicked away a good look from Brennan as time expired to send the Stags into the intermission with a 7-6 lead. Beckwith started the second half scoring, opening up an 8-6 advantage, before a 3-0 run for the Blue Hens put the hosts in front, 9-8. Rodrigues provided the Fairfield response, completing his hat trick with 42 seconds left as the contest reached the fourth quarter knotted at 9-9. Delaware struck first in the final frame to take a fast 10-9 lead. Just over five minutes later, Rodrigues connected with Brennan for the equalizer, tying the game at midway through the quarter. However, the last tally of the afternoon went to the Blue Hens as Kitchen s fourth of the day with 3:12 remaining sent the hosts to the victory. The Stags return to action next Saturday, April 7 for their annual meeting under the lights with Hofstra. This year s edition will emanate from Shuart Stadium on Long Island at 7 p.m. CAA play comes to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium for the first time in 2018 on the following Saturday, April 14. The Stags will host Drexel at noon as the front-end of the annual Fairfield Lacrosse Military Appreciation Day doubleheader. Tickets are on sale now at FairfieldStags.com/TIX.
