5 Ed Howdy gng! I recently cught up with the I.G.RA. Judges Chirperson, our own Mr. Dvid Pickle who I'm sure lot of you lredy know. This yer Dvid tkes over the reigns from nother G.S.G.RA. member nd pst Judges Chirperson, Roger Bergmnn. It is now Dvid's responsibility to mnge nd move prospective judges through the judge certifiction progrm nd to hndle recertifiction of existing judges. You cn get in touch with him t the number shown below. Dvid hs been judge now for bout 4 yers. He enjoys it lot, especilly the cmrderie between the rodeo officils, contestnts nd volunteers. He lso believes it is one of the more difficult officil positions to hold since the judges re lwys put on the spot. You must constntly mintin fir nd imprtil ttitude while judging. There re the close clls, nd you sometimes hve to mke difficult clls ginst contestnts who my be good friends. It is one thing to sit in the stnds nd score people on pper, nd nother to fce them with your decisions, especilly when significnt prize money is involved Some people find this difficult If you think you wnt to be judge to be populr, your doing it for the wrong reson. If you re considering being judge, Dvid sys stop nd give him cll right wy. You need to get strted s soon s you cn. There is currently shortge of judges in LG.RA. so more re needed. Being fmilir with the stock nd opertion of the ren is helpful, so if you've never been down there, you might wnt to strt volunteering to get fmilir with ren nd chute opertions. Some judging is done from horsebck. After your first two rodeos, you will be required to do some judging from horsebck, but not until then. You my wnt to lern to ride, or polish your skills in the mentime. The first thing tht you need to do is contct Dvid nd get signed up for judging school He highly recommends doing t lest one school before going to the judging seminr. The certifiction process requires you to ttend minimum of (6) dys of student judging school t I.G.RA. mjor rodeos -ech event must be student judged (6) times. Your scores will be compred with the officil rodeo results nd reviewed with Dvid. Hve him send you rule book - you must know this cover to cover since you re the officil tht interprets nd enforces the rules in the ren. After one schooling, you will need to ttend Seminr from the list shown below. The judging seminr covers both PRCA nd I.G.RA. rule books nd hs written exmintion which must be pssed 100%. If you fil the exm, you must study some more nd ttend nother seminr. Speking of rule books, the complete description of the judges job description nd certifiction requirements cn be found on pges in the I.G.RA. rule book. You must tke the seminr in the yer tht the you re to be certified. I encourge everyone to prticipte in some upcomming chpter ctivities in Sn Diego nd LA. There will be Roping nd Gymkhn clinic in Sn Diego on Februry 3rd, Gymkhn on 1/27 t Jnine Tuttle's nd tentive buckout on 2/17 t Meisner's Rnch. Even if you don't prticipte, it cn be fun to wtch nd meet people, nd hving few specttors mkes it more enjoyble for those prticipting. Red the chpter reports in your newsletter for more informtion. I encourge ll chpter eduction chirs, or other interested officers to contct me to see wht we cn do together. Eduction cn be n expensive re, nd together we cn shre the costs. There re 4 res of officils which require certifiction: Aren Director in chrge of running ll opertions in the ren, Chute Coordintor in chrge of ll chute nd stock opertions, Judges in chrge of contestnt scoring, Auditor/Scorekeeper/Secretry to mnge event sheets nd contestnt scoring/plcement. Ech of these res hs n I.G.RA. coordintor in chrge of certifiction for tht event. Ech coordintor holds seminrs for their re throughout the country during the yer which re usully required for certifiction. The first thing you need to do is get in contct with the coordintor for the re you re interested in nd let them know of your interest. Between the both of you, you should be ble to come up with pln tht will led to your certifiction.
