1 YNC In Brief YNC storm the league tables! Following some ups and downs, literally, last season, Reckleford have entered division 2 this season from division 3, and Wyndham dropped from Premier to division 1. Current league tables are looking very positive for YNC, with Wyndham and Hendford at the top of Division 1 and 2 respectively. Newton have settled into the season well, placing themselves mid table(ish), a distinct improvement on last season, and Babylon are continuing their winning streak and creeping into the top 5 and climbing towards the top of the Premier division every week. Reckleford have had some tough games, but have fought hard to pick up points along the way, and are sure to settle into their new division soon and get a few more wins. Winter Edition 2013/14 The season has been plagued with illness and injury across the squads with sprained ankles, dodgy shoulders, broken bones, chest infections and general plague, but with such good attendance and growing numbers, it s great to see the club thriving and having quantity and quality of players to keep performing and winning games. YNC Welcomes Sharks and Dolphins to Westfield Yeovil Netball Club s home venue at Westfield Academy has been transformed since the new courts were put in (we won t mention red and yellow lines ), so much so that the venue has now become the home venue of our fellow Yeovilbased teams Sharks and Dophins. Previously playing and training at Stanchester, Saturday s have now become a lot more sociable and atmospheric with both match courts being used at the same time. Westfield is hoping to be used more and more to host events such as Junior Tournaments, B2N Festivals, fun events and taster sessions for Juniors as well as continuing to host Somerset League matches across all divisions in the league. TEAMER TAKES OFF AT YNC This season has been the first that YNC has used Teamer, the Smartphone App designed to help clubs organise sports teams. Sam Newton has campaigned and pushed to get Teamer up and running, and I think we will all agree that it works wonders. The objective of the App is for all team members in the Senior Club to give their availability for training and matches in advance to allow Coaches and Team Managers to manage numbers effectively, and support the Club Squad system knowing who is available across all squads. Team members can also upload photos, organise match teas and use the message board to post match reports etc or use how they would like (Sam, however, can read everyone s posts, so watch what you say ladies!). So far, it has worked really well, and we hope that it will become a permanent means of communication, and even take off in the Junior Club and in Back2Netball. HENDFORD Hendford began the 2013 season with new look line up from the previous year due to trials and changes in playing personnel. We are eager to build on the 5 th place Hendford earned in the 2012/13 tables and our goal this season is to earn promotion to Division 1. Hendford have an excellent mixture of youth, enthusiasm and experience and settled very quickly, but one thing we all have in common is a steadfast determination to win over each game physically and mentally. The squad system has enhanced our playing experience as we have been able to move players in and out of play depending on each game and each playing combination usually proves a success. In terms of results we have had a very impressive start to first half of the season; results as of the end of December shows us having played 9 games and only losing 2 within 5 goals. The icing on the cake was our triumphant win over Bishops to topple them from the top spot, putting us there instead; a great early Christmas bonus for the team! 2 Babylon had a dodgy start to the season. Losing their first four matches, not the best start. Our squad of nine was soon impacted by injuries and Liz deciding she wanted a season off, and the departure of Amy Willis at the start of the season. We had a small change of personnel and a change of captain a few games before Christmas. I think the catalyst for the first half of the season was the match against Millfield, a team previously undefeated. A great squad effort and the first win of the season We had some very close matches with Newton, too close for comfort, which reflects on how the club is progressing. Since October Babylon haven't lost a match and have continued to gel as a squad. A slight change of squad for a number of weeks but a seamless change to the team for the new players. Thanks to anyone that played or subbed for Babylon. It is great to know we have the strength in the club. We have some hard matches after the Christmas break and need to ensure we continue to grind out the results. I'm sure the dynamic duo of Gill and Zoe leading the team will lead to success for the rest of the season. Just joking. It is a squad effort. Let's go Babs Gill Newton, Babylon Captain. BABYLON On the 30 th November, I m a netballer, get me out of here took place at Unit 3 in Yeovil. A fabulously organised and highly eventful evening was had by all. Toni Arnold, Mel Noone and Karen Kirlew all spent their precious free time organising some hilarious games including the bungee rope star challenge (Becky Wood, reigning champion!), the doughnuts on a string challenge and the team malteser transfer challenge (which should not have been attempted in tights)! Not entirely sure how much of the evening people (*ahem, Zoe and Ballam) remember, thank you hugely to the organisers for a cracking good night! Good luck to next year s social organisers for trying to top that one!! YNC Juniors attend stage 1 of England Netball s talent pathway Coached by our very own Sam Newton and Jo Peters, several YNC juniors have been selected to attend extra training sessions at Westfield School alongside other selected juniors from the County. Coaching Congratulations to Gill Newton, Alice Parsons and Gabby Nardiello for passing their Level 1 coaching awards. We are hoping to have more Level 1 and 2 coaches in the club over the forthcoming season. If you are interested in doing some coaching, or learning more about it, then see an existing coach or yeovilnetball_seniors@yahoo.co.uk Umpiring Congratulations to Ali Caller for passing her C Test, great to have more umpires in the club. Also to Georgia Tailby, Chloe Hellyar and Natalie Yeo from YNC Juniors for completing their Youth Umpire Award course and good luck with their tests towards the end of the season. Lizzie Harrison, Chloe Hellyar, Georgia Tailby and Amy Luck train every 2 weeks to develop their fundamental netball skills and train alongside players of a similar ability. I m sure the girls and their parent s are very proud of their achievements and I know we all are at YNC. Very well done girls, keep working hard!

3 WYNDHAM Wyndham have had a fantastic start to the season and are currently topping the table in Division 1 with a whopping 53 points from 11 games, having won 10 and drawn 1. There are some fantastic new additions to the squad with recruit Gwen Ben Ten Whateley who is Wyndham s Goal Keeper and now YNC s favourite Physio having been put to good use this season already! We also welcome Lizzie Harrison and Ellie Hinds, the Wyndham young uns, to add some speed to the centre court. Ellie has also stepped in to accompany Emily Smith in the shooting circle for several weeks as Laura Creek decided to trip over her own feet and sprain her ankle! The quality of shooting from Emily, Laura and Ellie has been outstanding, but made all the better for some great support play from Karen, Fiona and the sadly yoinked Kathy Potts. Wyndham s defence has also held strong with great interceptions from Gwen, Toni, Lizzie and Tammie. There has also been a change in captaincy part-way through the season having seen Toni Arnold donning the,metaphorical armband, and this hasn t wavered the squads positive attitude and determination to win. Wyndham have been knocked out the Cup competition by Premier team Hovelands, but are looking forward to meeting Swans (another Premier team) in the New Year. Wyndham s aim for the New Year is to win Division 1 and get back into the Premier Division without losing a match to join Newton and Babylon next season. Toni Arnold, Wyndham Captain. Back2Netball B2N has gone from strength to strength since it started at the beginning of last season. With Paula Isaacs moving onto new things, b2n was in the lap of the gods. Now lead by Jen Emslie and ably supported by Gill Newton and Rachael Kilby, the ladies now have a new kit are playing friendly matches and even getting some success at local tournaments. The long-term aim is for players to re-enter netball in Senior clubs such as YNC, or to enter Summer league teams to get more match play. Lisa Scragg has already made her debut in YNC s 5 th team, Reckleford, playing a full game at GK and being voted player of the match both by Reckleford s players, and the opposition. Westfield will be hosting a B2N tournament on the 26 th January, all help and support welcome! We now train on Tuesdays 6-7pm at Westfield, commencing again on 7 th January. Jen x Jen Emslie, B2N Coach. JUNIORS: A message from the Junior Chairperson: So far this season has been fantastic for all out girls who play in all age groups from U11 up to U16. With weekly training sessions and monthly tournaments as well as friendly matches in the younger age groups, the skill level of the girl s has got better and better. Credit to all the coaching and YNC Juniors is growing from strength to strength. Keep it up guys! Let's aim for top of the tables for all age groups which can be easily done with our girls. Many thanks also go to parents who endure bitterly cold conditions to transport and support the girl s at the tournaments and matches. 5 Well, the first half of the season already done and I think I ve survived as Head Coach! The consistently high numbers at training is both a headache for me and a blessing to the club. I ve been enjoying the challenge of keeping everyone entertained at training, even if it is blowing a hoolie! The first three captain's meetings have been held at the start of each month which I think has been a good connection between myself and the captains. Hopefully I ve been able to capture some of your requests for training sessions, so please keep suggesting areas you want to work on to your captains. Now to the teams; In my eyes, two teams have been a bit slow out of the blocks, one keeping a steady pace and building and two teams which have flown out in front. Babylon had a bit of an unsettle start, but now have had seven wins on the bounce. They need to keep control in all games and press on to increase their leads (instead of giving me heart attacks on the side lines). Reckleford are the second team who have taken a bit of a slow approach to getting started. From the few games I have managed to watch, there are flurries of good play through the court, we just need to decrease the individual errors and you'll be a fierce team to reckon with! It s also fantastic to see so many new faces to the club take the court for Reckleford. Newton have had a steady and promising start to the season. One of their main strengths is the versatility within the team, using a rotation squad system seamlessly to keep their opposition on their toes. Keep competitively challenging each match as you are reaping the rewards! Now Wyndham and Hendford are sitting pretty at the top of their respective leagues. It s great to see both squads gelling in any combination and bringing out the positive aspects of each other s games I hope you've been merry over the Christmas season and had a tipple at New Years because you'll be sweating it out at the first training session! haha! 6 U11s: Thanks to the enthusiasm of the U11s we have been able to enter 2 teams into the league this year. In the 3 tournaments to date all those wishing to play have been given the opportunity to do so with the girls playing in both teams and rotating through all the positions. We have been really impressed with how well they have taken to playing 7 a side netball and how adaptable they have been. Our 'Player of the tournament' so far has been Holly R, Caroline B, Carys V, Mille N, Katie C and Amber H. We are very much looking forward to the next 3 events and watching the girls' abilities grow. Jan Lawes, Coach. This being the first time I have coached such young players, I was unsure what to expect this season. Having watched other coaches and seeing the enthusiasm of such youth, pushed my limits as a coach. I have seen these talented players so far this season grow and progress not only in their skills of footwork ( ice-cream ), but their strength of passing and their strength and their ability to cope with any squad arrangement (which frequently changes each week!). It makes me proud to be their coach! They are a lovely and friendly bunch of girls who have worked extremely hard in every game so far, roll on the next tournament! And be aware opposition! Hollie Wright, Coach. Newton A slow start for Newton, lost the first game, but came strong in the next game which seemed to become a pattern - we seem to loose one game and win the next. We lost one of our defensive players due to injury and had to call upon another player from Wyndham, who fitted in well with us. We have been very fortunate to have such able and willing players playing up from Wyndham, namely Lizzie Harrison and Emily Smith who have featured with us on several occasions thank you! We are gelling as a team quite nicely now and have welcomed Kathy Potts into the squad. Our defence is strong as well as our attack but need to speed up a bit in the attack, which I know will come to us in the next half of the season. Nikki Raison, Holly Gale and Carlie Harrison have been the most regular recipients of Nigel (Pictured with Hols above!) having worked very hard so far in all their matches. Our next 3 games should keep us in the middle of the league, but would very much like it if we moved up a notch, I am sure the squad will agree with me so we need to work hard on letting this happen. As a result, despite outstanding effort, they currently lie towards the bottom end of the league table, and are struggling the get wins under their belts. However, they ve had some close games getting within 5 goals so have got some extra points to put on their league table. However, the squad does allow opportunity for junior players to complete in senior leagues, and also for back2netball participants to experience a more competitive side of netball. Captained by Katherine Hill, the team are always willing to try new positions and have a great squad ethos. Some of their easier games are coming up in the second half of the season, so hopefully they can get those all-important wins towards the latter end of the season to retain their place in Division 2. Jen Emslie CONGRATULATIONS: To Jo and Steve Bushell on the arrival of their Baby boy, Jacob on the 28 th October at the fighting weight of 7lb13oz.
