Starter Jordan Zimmermann (ND) lasted only 3.1 innings and allowed seven earned runs on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout. Detroit dropped a five spot in the 1st inning, including an infield single by Nicholas Castellanos and a grand slam by James McCann. The Twins answered back by pla ng five runs in the top of the 3rd inning on four hits to e the game at 5-5. Byron Buxton hit a leadoff homer in the 4th inning and Brian Dozier followed with an RBI single to make it 7-5 Twins. In the 6th inning, Joe Mauer launched a two-run homer and Buxton hit a sac fly to give the Twins an 11-6 lead. But the Tigers clawed back, pla ng one run in the 7th on a triple (Mahtook) and a sac fly (Upton), and three runs in the 8th on an RBI groundout (McCann) and a two-run homer (Iglesias) to cut the lead to one. That set the stage for Jus n Upton in the bo om of the 9th inning, when he crushed a two-run, walk-off home run off reliever Ma Belisle to send the Tigers fans home happy. ELIAS SAYS: Jus n Upton s two-run homer in the bo om of the 9th inning yesterday ended Detroit s victory over the Twins. It was the third-highest scoring game in Tigers history that they won with a walk-off homer. Hall of Famer Ty Cobb hit a walk-off shot in a victory against the White Sox on June 2, 1925, and Alex Avila did so in a 13-12, 11-inning triumph over the Red Sox on April 8, MORE ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A couple of addi onal notes on Detroit s wild victory over the Twins last night: *Marked the third me in the last 80 seasons and fi h me in franchise history in which the Tigers allowed at least 11 runs and 19-or-more hits and s ll won the game. Others: July 30, 2008 at CLE (14-12 win, allowed 19 H); August 27, 1938 at WSH (12-11 win, allowed 19 H); July 29, 1934 at CWS (16-15 win, allowed 19 H); June 2, 1925 vs CWS (16-15 win, allowed 21 hits). *Jus n Upton s walk-off two-run homer in the bo om of the 9th inning was his second game-ending longball of the season (previous: June 4 vs CWS) and sixth of his career. *Was Detroit s fourth walk-off win of the season (last: Miguel Cabrera BB, July 16 vs TOR). *Marked the Tigers first win of the season when trailing a er 8.0 innings (were 0-54 before last night). TIGERS TRANSACTIONS: Prior to today s game, the Tigers designated RHP Edward Mujica for assignment and selected the contract of RHP Jeff Ferrell from triple-a Toledo. Ferrell will wear #66. BEAU NO-NO: Right-hander Beau Burrows, Detroit s No. 4 prospect (No. 95 overall on MLB s Top 100 list), was untouchable on Saturday as he tossed 6.0 no-hit innings with eight strikeouts to lead double-a Erie to an 11-0 rout of New Hampshire. It was definitely a dominant performance, Erie pitching coach Willie Blair told MiLB.com. It was probably the most consistent he s been with execu ng pitches. He located the fastball down in the zone early and on the edges. He then was able to elevate it late. It seemed like his fastball had an extra gear when he got to two strikes. He elevated it and it had a li le extra life on it. It was probably the most consistent his breaking stuff has been since I ve had him. He s shown mes of having breaking balls -- the curveball and the slider. But tonight I think it was a li le more consistent. UPCOMING GAME DETAILS MAHTOOK HIM FOR GRANTED: Center-fielder Mikie Mahtook has recorded mul ple hits in a career-best five straight games and seven of his last eight. He is ba ng.455 (15x33) with a OPS in those eight games, which is ed for the third-highest average in the American League since August 5th (see chart below). Mahtook was acquired by the Tigers this past January from the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later (RHP Drew Smith). He was originally selected by the Rays in the 1st round (31st overall) of the June 2011 dra out of Louisiana State University. HIGHEST BATTING AVG., AL SINCE AUGUST 5TH 1. MIKIE MAHTOOK, DET.455 (15X33) Tim Beckham, CWS.455 (15x33) TWINNING!: Since September 2015, the Tigers have gone in 11 series versus Minnesota, including wins in each of their last four (5-0-1 in last six). The Tigers ac ve four series win streak is their longest versus Minnesota since September 24, 2010 to July 24, Detroit has not won five consecu ve series over the franchise since June 2 to August 31, 1955 when they were the Washington Senators. The Tigers have gone (.714) in their last 35 games against the Twins, which is the third-best winning percentage by any Major League team against a divisional opponent over that stretch (since September 15, 2015). Only the Cubs (.774, 24-7 vs CIN) and Astros (.735, 25-9 vs OAK) have be er marks. ON THIS DATE IN TIGERS HISTORY: In an effort to stop a four-game losing streak, Tigers skipper Billy Mar n picks his star ng lineup out of a hat for the first game of a doubleheader. The idea works as Detroit edges the Indians in the opener, 3-2, but the team loses 9-2 using Mar n s regular lineup in the nightcap. NOTES ON THE SKIPPER: Brad Ausmus is in his fourth season at the helm for Detroit a er being named the 37th manager in Tigers history on November 3, *Enters today s game with a (.505) record as DET s manager. *Earned his 300th career managerial win on August 3, 2017 at BAL *Spent 18 seasons as a catcher at the ML level with the Padres ( ), Tigers (1996, ), Astros ( , ) and Dodgers ( ). *Ranks third all- me among catchers with 12,839 putouts, while he is 10th in innings played (15,840.2) and games started (1,766). *Managed Team Israel in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.
