Starter Jus n Verlander (ND) threw 7.0 strong innings, allowing only one unearned run on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. The game remained scoreless un l the top of the 6th inning when, a er a fielding error, Kyle Seager delivered an RBI single to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Seale returned the favor in the bottom half of the frame, allowing one run to score on Robinson Canó s fielding error. In the top of the 9th inning, Francisco Rodríguez (L, 1-2) allowed a double to Seager and a game-winning RBI single to Ben Gamel. ELIAS SAYS: On Thursday, Mariners rookie Ben Gamel singled off Francisco Rodríguez in the 9th inning to drive in the go-ahead run for Seale in its 2 1 win over Detroit. Since joining the Tigers in 2016, Rodríguez had held rookie baers to a.138 average (4x29) prior to Thursday. The only other rookie with a go-ahead RBI against Rodríguez since the start of last season was Minnesota s Max Kepler, who homered off K-Rod in the 9th inning on July 20, 2016 at Comerica Park. THE TIGERS OFF-ENSE: Over a two-game stretch from Sunday (4/23 at MIN) to Tuesday (4/25 vs SEA), the Tigers combined to score 32 runs on 37 hits, including 14 extra-base hits (7 2B, 3B, 6 HR), with a.500 OBP (13 BB) and team OPS. In their last two games, however, Detroit s offense has plated only one run on eight hits with a.127 team AVG,.191 OBP (4 BB) and.366 OPS. MOTOWN VS. CHITOWN: The Tigers have gone 16-6 (.727) in their last 22 home games against Chicago, outscoring the White Sox (+29 R) over that stretch with a 3.42 team ERA (200.0IP/76ER). Detroit has not lost a series to the White Sox at Comerica Park since July 29-31, 2014, going in their last seven series here, including two series sweeps. KNOCK YOUR SOX OFF: Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler has reached base safely in each of his last 17 starts against the Chicago White Sox (since 6/5/16). Over that stretch, he s ba"ng.357 (25x70) vs. Chicago with a.425 OBP, OPS, four doubles, one triple, five home runs, 11 RBI and 16 runs scored. LEAKY PEN: Through their first 21 games, Tigers relievers have the highest combined ERA (6.72, 67.0IP/ 50 ER), opponents average (.285), on-base percentage (.381) and OPS (.873) of any bullpen in the majors. They also have five blown saves in their first 13 opportuni es (61.5 save %), ed for second most in the majors. WE RE NOT GETTING ANY YOUNGER: So far this year, the Tigers are averaging seven minutes longer than any other Major League team to complete a nineinning game (see chart below). 17 of Detroit s first 21 games have lasted three hours or longer (81%), nine have been over three and a half hours (43%), and two have lasted exactly four hours (4/14 at CLE, 4/22 at MIN). Only four have come in under the three hour threshold (19%). HELLO, OLD FRIEND: The Tigers will see a familiar face on the mound tonight in righthander Mike Pelfrey. The White Sox starter was released by Detroit on March 30 a er pos ng a 7.94 ERA (17.0IP/15ER) and 1.76 WHIP this spring. He went 4-10, 5.07 ERA (119.0IP/67ER) in 24 games (22 starts) for the Tigers last season a er signing a two-year contract with Detroit prior to the 2016 season. DIGGING THE LONG BALL: The Tigers have hit at least one home run in 18 of their first 21 games this season. They have hit 28 total home runs, second-most in the American League and eighth in the majors. Last year, Detroit hit 211 home runs, sixth-most in the AL and eighth in MLB.
