Starter Drew VerHagen lasted just 3.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits with one walk and one strikeout. The Pirates struck in the 1st inning on a triple by Adam Frazier and a sac fly by Josh Bell. Nicholas Castellanos ripped a two-run triple in the bo om half of the frame to put the Tigers up 2-1. In the top of the 2nd, Sean Rodriguez hit an RBI single to e the game at 2-2. Bell launched a two-run homer in the 3rd, but Mikie Mahtook answered back with a solo homer in the bo om of the inning to cut the lead to 4-3. In the top of the 4th, Frazier laced a two-run double to make it 6-3 Pirates. Rodriguez hit a solo homer in the top of the 8th to push the lead to four. The Tigers fought back in the bo om of the 9th inning, scoring twice on three hits, but the late rally fell short. TWINNING!: In their last 33 games against the Minnesota Twins, the Tigers have gone 24-9 (.727), which is the third-best winning percentage by any Major League team against a divisional opponent over that stretch (since September 15, 2015). Only the Cubs (.774, 24-7 vs CIN) and Astros (.735, 25-9 vs OAK) have be er marks. The Tigers have outhit the Twins 332 to 248 (+84) in those 33 games and outscored them (+43). Overall, Detroit is in 11 series versus Minnesota during that period, including wins in each of their last four (5-0-1 in last six). The Tigers ac ve four series win streak is their longest versus Minnesota since September 24, 2010 to July 24, Detroit has not won five consecu ve series over the franchise since June 2 to August 31, 1955 when they were the Washington Senators. I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU: Nicholas Castellanos ripped an RBI triple in his second consecu ve game yesterday, pla ng both Mikie Mahtook and Miguel Cabrera in the 1st inning. The three-bagger upped his American League-leading total to nine for the season. The last Tiger to collect 10-or-more triples in a single season was ou ielder Rajai Davis in 2015, while the last Tigers third baseman to do so was Ossie Vi in both 1915 (13) and 1916 (12). ON THIS DATE IN TIGERS HISTORY: A quirk in the Major League rules results in the first game of a doubleheader at Cleveland Stadium being suspended due to darkness, but allows the Tigers to beat the Indians in the nightcap, 3-2. The scoreless opener was stopped in the 14th inning because the ML edict stated, games started in daylight could not be completed under ar ficial lights, but the rule did not apply to the second game of the twin bill because it started a er the sun went down. He became the sixth Venezuelan-born player to make 250 Major League starts, joining Felix Hernandez (369), Freddy Garcia (357), Carlos Zambrano (302), Johan Santana (284) and Wilson Alvarez (263). REACHING 1,000 STRIKEOUTS: Sanchez notched the 1,000th strikeout of his Major League career on July 1, 2014 against Oakland. He became just the seventh Venezuelan-born pitcher in Major League history to reach the 1,000 strikeout mark. SANCHEZ CAPTURES AL ERA CROWN: Sanchez ended the 2013 season as the American League leader with a 2.57 ERA (182.0IP/52ER) to capture the ERA crown. He became the seventh pitcher in Tigers history to capture the ERA tle and the first since Jus n Verlander did so with a 2.40 ERA in JOINS FELLER WITH FIVE LOW-HIT GAMES IN FIRST 155: Sanchez fired a one-hi er in his ou ng on May 24, 2013 against the Minnesota Twins, marking the fourth one-hi er of his Major League career to go along with his no-hi er on September 6, 2006 vs. Arizona. The ou ng was the 155th of his career and he joined Bob Feller as one of just two pitchers since at least 1916 to record five complete games allowing one hit-or-fewer in the first 155 games of their Major League career. Feller also posted one no-hi er and four one-hi ers during that span, recording his fi h with a one-hi er in the 139th game of his career on July 12, 1940 at Shibe Park against the Philadelphia Athle cs. HISTORIC STRIKEOUT PERFORMANCE VERSUS ATLANTA: Sanchez recorded 17 strikeouts over eight shutout innings in his ou ng on April 26, 2013 against the Atlanta Braves, establishing the franchise record for strikeouts in a single game. The 17 strikeouts surpassed the previous high of 16 strikeouts accomplished by Mickey Lolich in a complete game effort on May 23, 1969, against the California Angels at Tiger Stadium.
