Right-hander Jus n Verlander (L, 5-7) threw 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Verlander cruised through the first four innings, allowing only three baserunners (2 H, 1 BB), but he ran into trouble in the 5th inning when he surrendered a solo home run to Steve Pearce and an unearned run on a sac fly following a fielding error by J.D. Mar nez. A er walking two straight ba ers with one out in the 6th inning, Verlander was li ed for reliever Shane Greene, who allowed one of his inherited runners to score on a bases-loaded walk. Blaine Hardy walked in another run in the 8th inning before allowing a two-run single to Josh Donaldson to make it 7-1 Blue Jays. Andrew Romine hit a solo HR in the 9th inning, but the late rally fell far short. ELIAS SAYS: Jose Bau sta hit a home run and drove in two runs in the Blue Jays win in Detroit on Friday. Bau sta is now ba ng.348 (56x161) in his career against the Tigers, which is his highest mark against any Major League club. JACK OF ALL TRADES: Tigers u lity man Andrew Romine slugged his fourth home run of the season last night, extending his career high. In just 67 games this season, Romine has set career highs in four different categories (2B - 9, HR - 4, RBI - 18, XBH - 15), while tying his career highs in two others (R - 30, 3B - 2). He has also appeared in games for the Tigers at seven different posi ons this year (1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF). WALK HARD: Tigers pitchers combined to issue 10 walks last night, their most in a single game since August 10, 2014 at TOR. They combined to walk eight ba ers between the 6th and 8th innings alone. Seven of the 10 walks came from Detroit s bullpen. The Tigers pen now has a 4.27 BB/9.0 IP ra o (269.2IP/128BB) this season, worst in the AL and 28th in MLB. IF I COULD BE LIKE MIKE: In 17 starts this season, All- Star Michael Fulmer has compiled a 9-6 record with a 3.19 ERA (115.2IP/41ER) and a 1.12 WHIP. He is currently ed for first in the AL in quality starts (15) with BOS Chris Sale, and he ranks fi h in BB/9.0 IP (2.02) and WHIP, ed for fi h in wins, sixth in ERA & innings, and 11th in SO/BB ra o (3.23). Since making his Major League debut on April 29, 2016, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year has posted the third-lowest ERA (3.11) among all American League starters (see chart below) and the third-lowest WHIP (1.12). Fulmer is (.606) in 43 career starts over that stretch and the Tigers have posted a (.674) record in those games. They have not won a season series versus Toronto since 2013 (5-2). On the bright side, the Tigers are looking to complete their third consecu ve series win against the Blue Jays at Comerica Park (previous series both 2-1). In his only career start versus Toronto, Michael Fulmer threw 6.0 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits on June 6, 2016 at Comerica Park. ABOUT MICHAEL: In his second Major League season, Fulmer will make his 18th start of the season tonight vs. Toronto. LAST TIME OUT: Fulmer picked up his ninth win of the season on Sunday at Cleveland, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in 6.0 innings. VS. TORONTO: Fulmer's only career start against the Blue Jays came on June 6, 2016 in Detroit, when he earned the win a er throwing 6.0 shutout innings with two hits allowed, three walks and five strikeouts. AT COMERICA PARK: Fulmer has made 19 career starts at Comerica Park and has an 8-4 record with a 3.53 ERA (119.2IP/47ER) and 89 strikeouts. In May, Fulmer posted a 3-2 record during the month with a 2.19 ERA (37.0IP/9ER) and 28 strikeouts in five starts, while he compiled a 2-3 record with a 4.28 ERA (33.2IP/16ER) and 24 strikeouts in five starts in June. QUALITY START STREAK SNAPPED: Fulmer had his quality start streak to begin the 2017 season snapped at 10 in his start on June 2 vs. the White Sox. Happ Toronto 2016 AL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Fulmer earned American League Rookie of the Year honors from the BBWAA last season, becoming the fi h player in franchise history to earn the honor and the first since Jus n Verlander in Among AL pitchers with at least innings pitched, Fulmer ranked third with a 3.06 ERA, while he was seventh with a.231 (136x590) opponents ba ng average and a 1.12 WHIP. Fulmer also posted 132 strikeouts, which were the second most by a rookie pitcher in Tigers history, trailing only Les Cain, who struck out 156 ba ers as a rookie in Along with being named AL Rookie of the Year by the BBWAA, Fulmer was named the American League Rookie of the Year by The Spor ng News and the American League Outstanding Rookie in the Players Choice Award ballo ng. SCORELESS STREAK ENDS AT 33.1 INNINGS: Fulmer posted an impressive scoreless innings streak of 33.1 innings during his rookie season. The streak, which was the longest by a Tigers pitcher since at least 1913, was snapped on June 17 at Kansas City when Salvador Perez hit a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the streak was the second longest by a rookie star ng pitcher since 1971, trailing only a streak of 35.0 scoreless innings by Fernando Valenzuela during the 1981 season. COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT: Fulmer threw the first complete game and shutout of his career on August 14, 2016 at Texas, sca ering four hits and striking out nine. Fulmer became the first Tigers rookie pitcher to throw a shutout since Jus n Verlander on May 22, 2006 at Kansas City and he joined Philadelphia's Zach Eflin and Colorado's Jon Gray as the only Major League rookies to throw a shutout last season. Fulmer threw at least 6.0 shutout innings and allowed three-or-fewer hits in four straight starts from May 27-June 12, According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since 1893, when the mound was moved to 60 feet, 6 inches away from the plate, Fulmer and Jake Arrieta are the only two pitchers to record four consecu ve starts of 6.0-or-more shutout innings and three-or-fewer hits allowed. Arrieta s streak occurred from September 22, 2015 to April 4, PICKING UP THE WIN IN HIS BIG LEAGUE DEBUT: Fulmer recorded the first win of his Major League career on April 29 at Minnesota. Fulmer became the 41st Tigers pitcher since 1913 to earn the win in his Major League debut and the first since Kyle Ryan on August 30, 2014 at Chicago (AL).
