Starter Michael Fulmer took the tough luck loss (10-11) a er throwing 7.0 strong innings. He allowed only one unearned run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The game remained scoreless un l the top of the 7th inning when Nicholas Castellanos commi ed a two-out fielding error on a pop up to third base. A er a walk to Yasmani Grandal, Adrian Gonzalez delivered an RBI single to right to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Jus n Turner added a two-out RBI single in the 8th inning off reliever Alex Wilson and Grandal crushed a solo home run in the top of the 9th off Shane Greene to push the Dodgers lead to 3-0. Closer Kenley Jansen came in for the bo om half of the frame and converted his 33rd save of the season. ELIAS SAYS: Yesterday s game featured a pitching duel between starters Hyun-Jin Ryu, who threw 5.0 scoreless in a no decision, and Michael Fulmer, who took a tough-luck loss, allowing one unearned run in 7.0 innings. It was the second Interleague game this season in which both star ng pitchers did not allow an earned run. The first was in Boston on April 5th, when Pi sburgh s Jameson Taillon and Chris Sale both threw 7.0 scoreless innings in a 3-0 Red Sox win. Addi onally, Yasmani Grandal (ba ng le -handed against Shane Greene) hit a 9th-inning opposite-field solo homer to provide the game s final run. Grandal is only the fourth visi ng catcher to hit an oppositefield homer ba ng le -handed at spacious Comerica Park since the stadium opened in The A s Adam Melhuse was the first to do it in 2004, the Twins Joe Mauer has had seven such blasts (all between 2006 and 2012), and Ma Wieters did it twice for the Orioles (2014, 2016). ZERO, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA: The Tigers suffered their ninth shutout of the season yesterday in a 3-0 loss against the Dodgers at Comerica Park. It also marked Detroit s third Interleague shutout loss of the year (previous: June 23 at SD, 1-0; August 7 at PIT, 3-0). The shutout was the Dodgers Major League-leading 13th of the season. Only two other teams in MLB have more than 10 shutouts this year (CLE - 12; STL - 10). In 2016, the Tigers were held scoreless 12 mes, ed for fourth-most in the majors. SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG: A er losing the first two contests of this three-game set, the Tigers are looking to avoid their sixth sweep of the season and second at Comerica Park (previous: April at TB; June at SEA; July vs KC; August 7-8 at PIT; August at TEX). Detroit has not been swept in back-to-back series since May 3-8, 2016 (0-3 at CLE, 0-3 vs TEX). The Tigers have only been swept by the Dodgers one me, which came in their first-ever mee ng back in 2003 (0-3 at Comerica Park). STRUGGLE BUS: The Tigers have lost each of their last six games, eight of their last nine, and 12 of their last 14 to fall to 16 games under.500 (53-69) for the first me since the end of the 2005 season when they finished (.438). Detroit s current six-game losing streak is their second-longest of the season (8 G, June 17-24). L.A. STORY: This three-game set at Comerica Park marks the eighth series ever between the Tigers and the Dodgers. Including their win this weekend, Los Angeles holds the series advantage, This marks the Tigers first series loss to the Dodgers since 2011 at Chavez Ravine (1-2), and their first home series loss versus LA since their first-ever mee ng in 2003 (0-3). UPCOMING GAME DETAILS ON THIS DATE IN TIGERS HISTORY: Tigers le hander Mickey Lolich out-dueled future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan in an 11.0-inning, 1-0 shutout at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Each pitcher went the distance while Ryan struck out 19 ba ers and threw a ball that was officially clocked at miles per hour by the Guinness Book of World Records, which at the me was the fastest pitch ever thrown in the history of Major League Baseball. Addi onally, since that date, only one other Tigers pitcher has thrown 11.0 or more scoreless innings in a game -- Mark Fidrych on July 16, 1976 in a 1-0, 11-inning win over the Oakland A s at Tiger Stadium. SUN S OUT, GUNS OUT: The Tigers have lost each of their last four day games (since August 6) a er winning their previous six (July 4-August 2). Today marks Detroit s 43rd day game of the season (out of 123 G, 35%). They are (.548) during the day this year, as opposed to (.375) at night.
