Standings: The G-Braves have been alone in second place in the International League South Division for the past 28 days. With eight games left, Gwinnett trails Norfolk (75-61) by 3.0 games for first place in the IL South and Columbus (78-59) by 5.5 games for the IL Wild Card spot. Winning Through 136: At (.529) through 136 games in 2015, the G-Braves have a winning record at the 136-game mark for the first time since the 2011 club went (.551). At Durham: The G-Braves are all time at Durham Bulls Athletic Park and have won the season road series with the Bulls three times: 2010 (6-5), 2011 (6-5) and 2015 (currently 6-4). Three or Less: Gwinnett has allowed three runs or less in 54 of their 72 wins this season, including three runs 13 times, two runs 11 times, one run 17 times and no runs 13 times. Bulls Slip Past G-Braves in Game 1: The Durham Bulls scored twice in the bottom of the second inning and held on to defeat the G-Braves 2-1 last night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham greeted LHP Greg Smith Current Road Trip (0-1) with three straight hits to open the second, including a double by DATE RESULT 8/31 at DUR L, 1-2 Corey Brown, bunt single by Joey Rickard and RBI single by 9/1 at DUR Jake Elmore. Two batters later, Mayo Acosta added a sacrifice 9/2 at NOR (1) fly scoring Rickard. That was the only damage done against 9/2 at NOR (2) Smith (L, 6-6), who scattered eight hits across 6.0 IP. Gwinnett 9/3 at NOR struggled against RHP Bradin Hagens (W, 4-5) of the Bulls, 9/4 at NOR scoring just once over his 6.2 IP. Luis Mateo (1-for-2, R) singled with one out in the fifth and scored on a two-out single by Cedric Hunter (1-for-4, RBI). The comeback ended there, however, as RHP Andrew Bellatti (H, 3) and RHP Jhan Marinez (S, 4) combined on 2.1 scoreless, hitless innings. RHP David Peterson added 2.0 scoreless IP in relief for Gwinnett. Smith is Quality Again: Despite falling to 6-6 with his second straight loss, LHP Greg Smith notched his team-leading eighth quality start last night (6.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 99 pitches/64 strikes). He s 6-6 with a 2.55 ERA (32 ER in IP) in 30 games with Gwinnett this year, including 5-5 with a 2.44 ERA (25 ER in 92.1 IP) in his team-high 18 starts. Smith currently ranks among qualifying IL pitchers in ERA (2 nd, 2.55), WHIP (5 th, 1.19) and lowest BAA (10 th,.250). For Starters: Gwinnett starting pitchers are 3-7 with a 4.39 ERA (33 ER in 67.2 IP) and five quality starts over the last 15 games dating back to 8/16 (GWN is 7-8). From 7/24-8/15, starters went 12-6 with a 3.20 ERA (43 ER in IP) and 12 quality starts in 22 games (GWN went 16-6). Mallex is IL August Player of the Month: Today, the International League named G-Braves CF Mallex Smith its Player of the Month for August. He batted.336 (41-for-122, 5 2B, 3 3B, 24 R, 5 RBI, 13 SB) in 29 games in August, leading the IL in hits, triples, runs scored and stolen bases for the month. He posted a nine-game hitting streak from 8/21-8/30, batting.333 (11-for-33, 3B, 8 R, 2 SB). Speed Leader: Smith ranks among IL leaders in both stolen bases (T-7 th, 27-for-31, 87.1%) and triples (T-7 th, 6). Last year s MiLB steals leader (88 SB in 120G with San Diego organization), he is tied for ninth in MiLB in steals with 50 (50-for-60, 83.3%) in 118 games between GWN and MIS. Hunter Starts a New Streak: OF Cedric Hunter has hits in each of his last three games (.273, 3-for-11, 3 RBI) after seeing his IL-best 21-game hitting streak snapped on Friday vs. Norfolk. About the Streak: Hunter batted.356 (31-for-87, 4 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 12 R, 20 RBI, 2 SB) on the 21-game hitting streak from 8/6-8/27, the second longest in Gwinnett club history. He fell one game shy of matching OF Jose Constanza s club record 22-game streak (6/22/12-7/19/12). Team Leader: He is among IL leaders in games (T-2 nd, 130), RBI (T-5 th, 72) and OPS (10 th,.759) and leads GWN in at-bats (446), hits (127), HR (12), total bases (192), OBP (.328) and SLG (.430). David Carpenter: Has pitched 7.0 scoreless innings (1 H, 1 BB, 9 SO) over his last seven outings. He s 2-0 with a 1.14 ERA (6 ER in 47.1 IP), two saves (2-for-4) and 10 holds (8 th in IL) in 38 games with Gwinnett this year. Hunter Cervenka: Has not allowed an earned run since signing with the Atlanta Braves as a MiLB free agent on 7/7, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER in 17.1 IP) in 15 games between Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi. Snitker Returns: Brian Snitker manages the G-Braves in 2015, his second season with the club and 39 th season with the Braves organization. Following a seven-year run as Atlanta s MLB third base coach ( ), Snitker was named the third manager in GWN history on 10/14/13. It is his 136 th career minor league start (190 th appearance). Vs. Durham: Making his sixth career Triple-A start (7 th appearance), Mateo faces the Durham Bulls for the first time in his career tonight vs. MTG: He made two starts against Double-A Montgomery while with Mississippi this year, going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA (3 ER in 14.0 IP). Former Rays Farmhand: Mateo spent the first eight years of his career ( ) in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, going with a 4.06 ERA (335 ER in IP) in 165 games (112 starts). Mateo made his first career Triple-A relief appearance on 8/27 vs. Norfolk, replacing LHP Manny Banuelos (MLB rehab) in the third inning. About 2015: Signed by Atlanta as a MiLB free agent on 11/13/14, Mateo opened his first year in the Braves system with Double-A Mississippi and was promoted to Gwinnett for his Triple-A debut on 7/30. The Season So Far: Mateo is 9-8 with a 3.29 ERA (50 ER in IP) in 25 appearances (23 starts) between Mississippi and Gwinnett. Rotation vs. Pen: He s 8-7 with a 3.01 ERA (44 ER in IP) in his 23 starts, 1-1 with a ERA (6 ER in 5.0 IP) in his two relief appearances. With Mississippi: In 19 outings (18 starts) for the M-Braves, he went 6-6 with a 2.68 ERA (32 ER in IP). At the time of his promotion, he led the team in innings and starter ERA, and was tied for first in wins and starts. On the DL: After his first start on 4/11 at Tennessee, he was placed on the Mississippi disabled list from 4/13-4/25 with a right thumb contusion. About 2014: Mateo pitched the entire season with Double-A Montgomery (Tampa Bay Rays), tying a career high with 12 wins. He also suffered a careerhigh 11 losses and posted a 3.90 ERA (72 ER in IP) in 28 starts. Selected as the Erik Walker Award recipient for Short-A Princeton in 2010 for a player who exemplifies positive traits on and off the field.
