He unlaterally attempted to eject a The Tech reporter from the dscusson wthout debate, but was prevented from dong so by vote of the House Commttee. The dffcultes stalrted wth a blrthday party for two students held about 10:30 p.m. n the 4th floor room of Marcos Sualrez '55. The partcpants, under the nfluence, made a great deal of nose, threw beer cans and bottles from ther wndows to the street below and nto the halls, broke about three dozen lght bulbsplungng the second, th:'rd and fourth floor halls nto total darknessand rpped out an nsttute phone. Accordng to the man at the desk, ths group joned up wth a party held n the room of John Woulbroun '55 at about 12:30 a.m. to go get some Chnese food. On the way out several of the students collapsed. Whle gettng nto ther cars they greatly dsturbed the resdents of the hosptal next to Baker, as they dd agan when they returned at about 2:40 a.m. The nght watchmen stated, "they really cut loose... many of them oute drunk... howlng lke manacs, actng vulgar, stupd..." Some men engaged n water fghts and broke two pumpkns on the second floor. All the partcpants had been prevously warned aganst repeated nosy partes by Amstel', who summoned the men to appear before the Commttee and read them the part of the Dormtory ByLaws authorzng acton and penaltes for such offenses. Most of the men admtted gult. On beng questoned about prevous offenses, one of the partcpants n the rotng sad, "f we keep drftng back to prevous ncdents, ths s gong to be endless." T Hllel Holds Onega Succoth n Burton House Ths past Monday evenng, M..T. Hllel held an Oner Succoth n celebraton of the Succoth holday season. The affar was attended by approxmately 50 people, ncludng nmany, women from surroundlng schools. The evenng concluded wth a rousng sesson of folk sngng and dancng. memoral to Dr. Compton from the Underfgraduate Assocaton. A more controversal ssue was ntroduced by Ashton C. Stocker '55, fraternty nscormm representatve. All Dorms Select Stocker moved to rescnd the moton, passed by nscomm last year whch outlawed "off campus hazng." After House Commttees some dscusson, Stocker's moton was replaced by a substtute moton from or Ensung Year Sherman J. Uchll '55, Baker House representatve. Judllcomm Warns Judcal Commttee to act only f the person taken on the rde lodges a complant. Uchll's moton was n turn amended by Garry L. Qunn '6, repr'esentatve of the Class of 1956, to allow Judcal Commttee to ntate acton even when no complant s lodged, f any personal njury occurs. Ths amendment was carred by a vote of 143, the nays beng voced by Stockerwho consdered the ncluson of such a provson "extraneous and rdculous"; Rchard L. Peskn '56, Burton House Representatve; and Davd Rados '55, raternty Representatve. Those favorng Uchll's moton as amended by Qunn argued that t allowed those who so wshed to partcpate n hazng and protected those who dd not wsh to partcpate. The opponents of offcampus hazng averred that t was facetous to expect anyone to ask a freshman f he felt lke gong for a rde and argued "hat the new measure would effectvely elmnate antrde legslaton by makng t unenforceable. Rdes Stll Banned Snce the moton would rescnd a prevously passed moton, t requres ether a twothrds vote of those present or a majorty vote of the total membershp of nscorem for passage. The rollcall vote was one short of the necessary majorty, as 10 members voted to permt rdes, seven voted aganst the moton, and two abstaned. Two other members were absent. Votng for rdes: Glenn D. Jackson '55, Rchard L. Peskn '56, Davd Rados '55, John S. Saloma '56, Henry Salzhauer '57, W. Chandler Stevens '55, C. Harry Schreber '55, Ashton C. Stocker '55, Sherman J. Uchl '55, Roy W. Salzman '55. Votng aganst rdes: Stanley Becker (Contnued on page 3) Aganst Rdes After serous consderaton, nsttute Commttee passed the followng moton an October 14, 1953: "MSPThat all cases of hazng off campus whch are reported to the Judcal Commttee, or whch they learn about ndependently, shall be subject to Judcal Commttee acton. orcng an ndvdual off campus shall be consdered hazng." As a corollary to ths moton, the followng was MSP at the same meetng: "The Executve Commttee of nscomm shall promptly use every possble means of publczng the contents and ntent of ths ntoton." The Judcal Commttee feels that suffcent tme has passed for most students to be aware of ths moton. The only possble excepton beng the Class of 1958, we feel that ths notce wll serve tc. nform that group. Therefore, t wll be the polcy of the Judcal Commttee to take mmedate acton on any further volatons of ths moton. THOMAS A. MARLOW '%5. Charman, Judcal Commttee

MORE PLUM SLAND HELL Just what s meant by ths word Hell? They say sometmes t's hot as Hell! Sometmes they say t s cold as Hell! When t rans hard, t's Hell they cry t's also Hell when t's dry. They hate lke Hell to see t snow, t's a Hell of a wnd when t starts to blow. Now, how n the Hell can anyone tell What n the Hell they mean by Hell? By next Wednesday, unless student opnon s strongly opposed, nsttute Commttee wll have successfuly pulled the teeth out of last year's moton to ban offcampus hazng. At Wednesday's meetng, a move by Ashton C. Stocker '55 to rescnd the motno passed last year regardng rdes and other forms of offcampus hazng was amended by Sherman Uchll '56 and Garry Qunn '56 to provde that Judcal Commttee would ntate acton f the person hazed reported t to the commttee, or. f personal njury resulted. The amended moton faled to pass by but one vote. The two amendments at least prevent the orgnal moton of last year from becomng a complete falure, but they fal to serve the purpose ntended. The great majorty of students here, sadly enough, consder t a low form of "squealng" to nform a responsble person that they have been "taken for a rde" or even that they have been njured durng hazng. Because ths atttude s so prevalent at the school, the moton as t now stands s completely neffectve n curbng freshman hazng. reshmen wll stll be taken out before ther quzzes, they wll stll be subjected to njury and harsh treatment, they wll stll come down wth vrus pneumona after a nght on Plum sl, n the semnude, and, n short, they wll stll be subjected, all the harsh and unfar treatment that orgnal nscomm moton was desgned to stop. Ths year's nsttute Commttee has demonstrated by ths moton, whch appears destned to pass at a specal meetng next Wednesday afternoon, that they have nether the courage nor the strength of convcton of ther predecessors. t may be true that a few enlghtened members wll fght ths new proposal to the end, but we fear that the majorty are of the type that does not resent hazng, as long as they are the ones to haze, rather than to be hazed. The Tech RDAY, OCTOBER 15,1954 Ths marred lfe s Hell they say When you come home late, there s Hell to pay. t's Hell when the kd you have to tote, When he starts to bawl, t's a Hell of a note. t's Hell when the doctor sends hs blls or a Hell of a lot of trps and plls. Refreshments wll be served. 488 Beacon Street. t El ; E E 9 wr m THE GREAT J. P. SWNDLE n two weeks there wll be a formal dance at the Hotel Statler whch s commonly referred to as the Junor Prom. The front tables at ths dance wll be occuped prmarly by senors, sophomores, and even freshmen and other urchns. The junors, meanwhle, wll be located n the dark corners behnd the potted palms, and out n the halls. A year ago the Class of 1956 elected a Junor Prom Commttee. Ths Commttee was entrusted wth the dutes of securng a good band for ths dance, and of ensurng that the junor class receved specal prefersnce n the matter of tckets and locaton. Ths commttee, headed by Olver Johns '56, has succeeded admrably n the frst of ts goals, wth the Sauternegan orchestra beng sgned to play. However, they have only partally reached ther second objectve. t s qute true that, under the opton system employed, the members of the Class of 1956 were gven frst chance at securng tckets, but, to quote the ByLaws of the Junor Prom Commttee, "These optons shall guarantee the holder a tcket to the prom, but shall not enttle hm to any partcular table locaton." Therefore, whle the junors could assure themselves of a tcket, there was no preference of locaton. The system that was employed ths year gave an advantage to the senors, sophomores, etc., who were wllng to st up the majorty of Tuesday nght watng n lne for tckets. As a consequence, many of the best tckets were taken from the junors by such groups as the fraterntes, who could afford to "order" ther pledges to endure the all nght stand before the general sale last Wednesday. The 1955 Junor Prom Commttee has successfully taken a narrow and based vew, by attemptng to console the junors through the opton system, and stll gvng the advantage of the best tables and locaton to certan selected partes. 35&1 WHEN YOU KNOW YOUR BEER, t's bound to be Bud L Le You see t so often... a warm welcome for a cold bottle of Budweser. 4 Page our The Teche RDAY, OCTOBER 15,1954 sl the bush leaguer Beta, Theta C., ATO Wn Sgma Nu, SAE Show Power by Jerry Marwell '57 "When we were good we were very, very good, but when we were bad we were horrd." That's the story of our frst venture nto ntramural football prognostcatons... some games we were sharp on... but when we mssed, we really mssed. Ths week we try agan and also tell you where, and maybe why, we messed up. Delts Powerful n league one, last weekend, all went accordng to schedule, more or less. Delta Tau Delta, whom we pcked to wn by eghteen ponts showed terrfc power n beatng Ph Kappa 442. They'used a powerful lne consstng of Joe Tmms and Lou Gordano '58 and Jan Wennng '56 to rp the Ph Kappa's to shreds. They were greatthat's the whole story. Kappa Sg contnued wnnng but not before a really fne TEP squad threw a good scare nto them. The TEP's are good and are mprovng; watch for them. The Kappa Sgs just managed to eke out a 60 vctory. Baker A topped Theta X 76 and ddn't look as strong as expected. Ph Gam beat DU but only by a score of 80. Ths was one game we ddn't lke to watch. The J's started out hot, they scored n the openng mrnutes of play. Tom Hoffman '56 took a pass and then scampered thrty yards for the T.D. A safety mmedately followed ths. Then Bll Waterson '57 got shaken up and had to be taken out. The J's were never the same. What hurt, though, was the fact that n the fourth qvarter Tom Hoffman was ht by a man who was off hs feet and got up wth a smashed elbow. An expensve lesson on why the rule that a man may not leave hs feet to throw a block s n the book. n league two Sgma Ch showed surprsng power n trouncng Ph Kappa Sg 396. We had them by 6. We also pcked AEP over the 5:15 Club but the commuters ran all over the fraternty boys. Possble reason.. some key players decded to go home for thne weekend. Burton House also surprsed us, not by wnnng, but by showng up to face Student House. The Student House boys played well and won by a 60 margn. Delta Ps Surprses Our second wrong choce came n league three. Here we sad that Ph Kappa Sg would top Delta Ps by two T.D.'s. We were nneteen ponts off as the Delt's emerged wth a 70 vctory. Our supposed branstorm was pckng Burton Student Staff to "upset" Ch Ph by maybe sx tallys. They won, all rght, but by a score of 310. Ths team looms larger and larger n the mnd of anyone attemptng to predct league champons as they contnue to bulldoze any team that crosses ther path. Ther opponents next week n what should be the ehamponshpdecdng battle, the Betas, made us look good by bestng Ph Delta Theta n what we sad would be a "pckem" game (we pcked the Betas) by the "pckem" score of 80. Ths game was close all the way, the Beta's pckng up that safety on the last play of the game. One touchdown s a mghty slm lead. That T.D., by the way, came on a pass from Dck McLoughln '57 to Don Evans. Ben Lghtfoot '56 shone for the losers. SAE mproves Whch brngs us to league four where Theta Ch dd just what t was supposed to, ATO was too good (as far as our predctons were concerned) and SAE got even wth us for all the uncomplmentary thngs we've been sayng by playng a whale of a game. The Theta ChP Lam contest was a wellplayed, hardfought affar. Both teams exhbted strong lnes and balanced offenses. The Theta Ch's won because of one reason, experence. Ther T.D. came on a Dave Scott '55Dck Rush '55 pass. The safety was made on the last play of the game. We should be hearng from P Lam agan. They shouldn't be kept down. ATO mpresses The ATOEast Campus battle proved one thng... ATO s the bggest, roughest, and close to the best squad n the nsttute. Ther defense s easly the most formdable around. n the frst half of ther game wth the Eastes ther defense was so good that the Dormmen had possesson of the ball for a total of eleven plays. John Stellng %56 and Tony Vertne '57 were standouts for ATO whle Hal Becker '56 and Tony Ryan '57 played well for the losers. SAE crushed Grad House by a score of twentytwo to nothng, thereby knockng the graduates out of ths year's competton. They looked much more lke the runnersup they were last year than they dd last week. Partcularly mproved was ther passng attack. Bll Dean '57 and the whole defensve lne also showed to advantage. Sgma Nu New Power n league fve a new powerhouse emerged n the presence of a welloled machne gong under the name of Sgma Nu. They whpped a far SAM squad, whom we pcked to wn, by a decsve 190 margn. Top B. U. The B. U. game was not nearly as close as the score mght ndcate. MT went n front early n the frst perod and was never headed. Ray Morales '55 slammed n a goal mdway through the perod and Bernarde Blaschtz '55 netted a par n the same stanza. The Boston Terrers counted both ther talles durng the second quarter and after that the game was all Tech although Coach Ben Martn's charges were unable to add to the scorng. The Engneer strength lay n ther defense wth both goals comng on momentary lapses. As the season progresses the defense should become more consstent. Rout Brandes The Brandes game was no contest at all. Play was nsde Brandes terrtory for almost the entre game. Ray Morales counted twce n the frst perod to gve the Engneer booters all the scorng they were to need. Captan Marlos Suarez '55 added a tally n the thrd quarter and, early n the fourth stanza, Rene de Leon '56 booted home a beautful fortyfooter to close out the Engneer scorng. The Brandes goal came a mnute or so before the fnal whstle when, wth an entre substtute team n the game for Tech, the goale fumbled a shot and Rosen of Brandes tapped t nto the twnes. Standouts for the Beaver booters n both games were rght wngman Jmmy Robnson '57 and Captan Suarez playng n the center slot. ace Amherst Tomorrow the Engneers face Amherst n what should be the game to decde the New England champonshp.
