Many Wharton Computng staff members spent all nght manually reloadng 37, user fles untl the back up was able to contnue the process on ts own. rector of Wharton Computng Gerry McCartney sad the team took many calls from students askng, "Where s the blnkng system '" The problems began on Thursday at 4:45 p m when futures wharton stopped acceptng any logns Alter tn' frst ndcaton of dffcultes, Wharton Computng staffers used repar programs to try to "breath lfe" nto the system, McCartney sad. That effort dd not work and the group determned that the dsk systems were corrupt. McCartney sad workers attempted to recover the system from back-up, but the back up robot had also faled "The crash was the damnedest bad luck," McCartney sad. "The chance of everythng not workng s pretty extreme." n order to solve the fle system problem, the team splt nto two groups. Some staffers worked contnuous ly to restore copes to the fles man ually, whle others tred to fx the back-up robot. CHEATNG from page Another fve cases were for falsfyng grades, n transcrpts, ms representng academc records and other academc volatons. These ncluded students alterng ther transcrpts and falsfyng nformaton on ther resumes, contactng prntng servces and orderng falsfed transcrpts and one volaton for attemptng to break nto a faculty member's offce. Punshments for these offenses last year ranged from a twoyear suspenson to a psychatrc evaluaton Fnally, seven students were sanctoned for plagarsm, ncludng one student who stole anothe class member s paper, put hs name on the cover and submtted t as hs own. Students can also be brought to the JO for "submttng, wth out pror permsson, any work submtted to fulfll another academc requrement." n addton, knowngly helpng someone volate any of the code's provsons s defned as facltatng academc dshonesty and s a volaton of the code. But whle only 2 volatons of academc ntegrty were ult mately resolved by the JO last year, some beleve that the number of cheaters s actually much hgher. "My belef s that there s a lot more academc dshonesty than gets dscovered," Actng Judcal nqury Offcer Mchelle Goldfarbsad Goldfarb's asserton s supported by two recent studes, both of whch assert that cheatng especally at elte nsttutons s much more prevalent than mght be expected, even at schools lke Penn that have honor codes. Conducted by Rutgers Unversty Professor Douglas McCabe, the survey nonetheless found that students at colleges wthout honor codes cheat at a hgher rate than those at unverstes wth the codes. McCabe dscovered that 3 percent of students at schools wth honor codes had cheated on a test, whle at schools wthout the codes, 45 percent of students admtted to cheatng. n addton, 54 percent of those at schools wth academc ntegrty codes reported "serous" cheatng on a test or wrtten as sgnment, whle 7 percent of other students reported such cheatng. Another part of the survey showed that busness majors ad mtted they cheated the most, followed by engneerng students. At Penn, the Code of Academc ntegrty s applcable to all undergraduates and most graduate schools. Some, lke the schools of Dental Medcne and Law, have ther own procedures for sanctonng academc dshonesty. "We as a Unversty have a responsblty to educate our students about academc ntegrty," (oldfart) sad. "There s a need for educaton the more students learn, the better off everyone wll be." To help fulfll ths goal. Provost Stanley Chodorov formed the Unversty Honor Councl last sprng. Accordng to UHC Charperson and College junor Justn Shellaway, the councl was formed for three purposes to educate people about academc ntegrty, to oversee students' hearngs and to advse the provost. The Nomnatons and Electons Commttee selects the group of 3 undergraduates each tall n an applcaton pre. \s part of ts educatonal programs, a book outlnng the Unversty's honor code wll be dstrbuted to freshmen and ncom ng freshmen. The group s also attemptng to brng m a speaker for early next fall. An estmated 23 mllon taxpayers are currently elgble to fle paper lax returns through the electronc flng system called TeleFle, accordng to an RS press release. Ths new servce represents the latest step n a concerted effort by the RS to elmnate the paperwork produced by mllons of taxpayers each year, the release sad.
