All uscle Judge unseats Stnson; arks to fll vacancy Alum holds balance n senate By GREGORY ONTANARO Daly Pennsylvanan Stall Wrter In an unprecedented move. U.S. Dstrct Court Judge Clarence New comer ruled that Democrat Wllam Stnson must vacate hs State Senate seat and be replaced by Unversty alumnus Bruce arks, a Republcan. Newcommer ruled that Stnson's electon to the State Senate for the Second Dstrct s nvald because a sgnfcant number of absentee bal lots were found to be fraudulent In hs 37 page decson. Newcomer sad that fraud was so extensve that none of the absentee ballots cast n the predomnantly black and Latno wards of the Dstrct could be counted. In votes cast on electon day last year before any absentee ballots were cast arks defeated Stnson 52 percent to 48 percent. In hs rulng. Newcommer alleged that Democratc Cty Commsson ers argaret Tartaglone and Alexander Talmadge. Jr and Elec tons Supervsor Denns Kelly were drectly nvolved n the effort to fraud ulently round up absentee ballots. "There was a massve conspracy on the part of the Stnson campagn and the Democratc Poltcal ma chne, as admnstered by the cty commssoners to steal the electon," arks sad n a telephone ntervew last nght. The WaWa Food arket on Walnut Street, between 39th and 40th streets, wll close permanently next onday, Feb. 28. Untl then, the store wll close at mdnght every nght and reopen at 6:15 a.m. The store, whch has been n ts present locaton snce 1975, s "gettng old," sad Customer Servce Assstant and anager-on-duty Tony Ward last nght. Ward added that WaWa workers have been nstructed not to talk to the press about the closng. "A number of thngs" were consdered before closng the store, and safety was among them. Ward sad. The store has been robbed several tmes at gunpont n the past year, most recently at the begnnng of ths semester. Ward sad the newly remodeled WaWa at 38th and Spruce streets s not a factor n the Walnut Street store's closng. But all employees current ly workng at the Walnut Street store wll be trans ferred to that locaton. It's good there's another store n the area." Ward sad. "That store s gong to be real busy." The 38th Street WaWa recently added a Pzza Hut Express and an espresso bar to ts exstng grocery and Taco Bell optons. The addtons wll Thrd Town eetng focuses on undergraduate educaton By JEREY KAHN Daly Pennsylvanan Stall Wrter Fve cameras scanned the aud ence, movng from person to person. But partcpants at Frday's Town eetng remaned focused on one thng - - undergraduate educaton. any audence members heralded the Unversty s thrd televsed Town eetng, held n the Law School's new Tannenbaum Hall, as a bold frst step toward mprovng the under graduate experence. The dscusson ranged from how well the Unver sty has lved up to Ben Frankln's vson snce ts foundng to the qualty of undergraduate teachng. Annenberg School for Communcaton Dean Kathleen Hall Jameson moderated the 90-mnute dscusson whch began at about 10:00 a.m. Among the 60-person, lve studo audence were the deans of the Unvers ty's four undergraduate schools, Interm Presdent Clare Fagn, Interm Provost arvn Lazerson, members of the Student Commttee on Undergrad uate Educaton and assort ed students and faculty who sgned up to attend. For members of SCUE, who co-sponsored the Town eetng wth the Presdent's Offce, t was ther day to shne. And t was a long day at that many SCUE members had been up snce 5:00 a.m. helpng to transform the second floor of the new law l brary nto a makeshft televson studo. When the cameras stopped tapng. SCUE members sad ther efforts had pad off. "I'm glad we got to deal wth a mul ttude of ssues," SCUE Presdent atthew Kratter sad after the meetng. "And I'm glad we got to keep the focus on undergraduate educaton and keep t from other ssues." The meetng began wth a vdeo n whch College of Arts and Scences Dean atthew Santrocco dscussng Frankln's vson n foundng the Un versty. In the background, the Glee Club sang the "Red and the Blue." Then, Jameson asked Santrocco, who was n the audence, to what extent the Unversty lves up to that vson today. Santrocco sad the Unversty em bodes Frankln's deal n many ways, but that t stll has a dstance to go to- Kathleen Hall Jameson Annenberg Dean and Town eetng oderator ward completng hs vson of "an ed ucaton that s both useful and ornamental." As each of the four undergraduate deans was gven a chance to respond to Jameson's questons, the dscus son moved to whether the "One Un versty" concept, frst framed n a 1973 report to the Unversty com munty, s a realty. Wharton School Vce Dean Jance Bellace sad she thnks the Unvers ty has acheved the One Unversty deal n many respects, but added that Unversty budgetng procedures may nterfere wth t to some extent. The dscusson then ranged to oth er topcs, ncludng faculty student nteracton and advsng n the varous schools. The close faculty student nterac ton acheved n the School of Nursng was prased by School of Engneerng and Appled Scence Dean Gregory Farrngton as the model to whch all the other schools aspre. Santrocco acknowledged that n the past. College sophomores have been poorly advsed. "Sophomores have been at a dsadvantage," he sad. "We talk about the sophomore gap that's over." Santrocco added that next year sophomores wll be encouraged to contnue meet ng wth ther freshman advsors. He sad that "maps" for stu dents n the form of a com prehensve student handbook should be aval able soon. At one pont, a student stood up to voce dsapproval wth the Commsson on Strength enng the Communty's rec ommendaton to prevent freshmen from lvng n lv ng learnng resdences. Undergraduate Assembly Charperson Seth Hamalan sezed the opportunty to ex press hs own opposton to the Commsson's recommendaton on assgned nous ng, forcng Fagn to respond and threatenng to deral the dscus son. But College senor and SCUE member chael Tresman brought the focus back to undergraduate educaton wth a forcefully-worded ap peal to the admnstraton, urgng them to take acton on at least one central ssue - the qualty of under graduate teachng. After the meetng, most audence members prased the televsed fo rum, stayng n the studo to contn Please see EETING, page 7 mean new tranng for the Walnut Street employ ees. Ward sad. Ward sad he s "not too happy" that the store s closng, n part because "a lot of people n the area wll be nconvenenced." any Hgh Rse resdents wll be among those who wll have to go out of ther way due to the closng. Nursng sophomore Jean Evans sad last nght she wll have to shop at the 38th Street WaWa from now on "Ths one's closer so t's more convenent." she sad. Unversty antenance and Utltes anager Lous Vsco sad last nght the damage caused by the storms may be worse than ntally expected. "Untl the thaw comes, t's hard to calculate," Vsco sad. "When the water starts flowng, that's when you can say, 'uh-oh, we've got more [dam agel than we expected.'" Executve Vce Presdent Janet Hale echoed Vsco's sentments, sayng she wll not be able to estmate how much the property damage wll cost the Unversty untl she spoke wth "someone n the nsurance area." Vsco sad ths wnter's unusually cy temperatures and abundance of snowfall caused damage to ppes, walls, celngs and walkways at the Unversty. He added, though, that the Unversty has not been damaged "struc turally" by the weather. Vsco sad Physcal Plant crews have already begun "cold-patchng" fllng up holes the bluestone coverng Locust Walk. Accordng to Vsco, many potholes have formed n the "medcal area" and on Hamlton Walk. These potholes and cold-patches have been caused by pedestran and car traffc, as well as ce and snow, he added. Phladelpha Department of Streets and Hghways Spokesperson Cyntha Wllams sad last week ths wnter's freezng temperatures have caused "a lot of potholes" on cty streets. Although Wllams was unable to say how much t wll cost to repar the potholes, she sad t wll take "more money than we would normally spend to fx the potholes." "It's hard to get a handle on how much money t wll take," she added. Vsco sad Physcal Plant crews have "prortes," and have not begun workng on "places that are solated." The ce and snow storms forced the Unversty to close for an unprecedented three days ths semester. The cty also shut down twce due to the weather. 3 TOORROW Ivory Towers: Unversty professors voce ther opnons on classes, students and teachng. THE DAILY PENNSYLVANIAN Focus An n-depth look at ssues affectng the Unversty communty FEBRUARY 21,1**^ 3 Once Upon A Tme A Hstory of the Quad BY PAUL LAU >NICA Daly Pennsy rflntan Start Wr 1 "W"n 189:1, lfe at the Un- versty was forever changed. The Quadrangle was bult, provdng Unversty students wth a common area to lve, work and socalze. Before the Quad was con- structed, most students lved ether wth ther famles or n roomng houses n the West Phladelpha area, accordng to Assocate drector of the Unversty Archves Hamlton Ellot. Ellot sad when the campus was located downtown n the 1760s, the Unversty had some dormtores around 4th and Arch streets, but none were mmedately bult when the campus moved to ts present ste. As the 19th century progressed, though, Ellot sad there began to be a "very strong plea to have dormtores on campus." And when the Quad was Anally bult and opened to students, he sad, t was a great success. In 1897, the provost wrote n hs annual report to the Unversty Board of Trustees that the dorms began ther second year of operaton wth a full number of tenants. Ellot added that the roomng houses located n West Phladelpha suffered from the popularty of the Quad. "[The roomng housesl took a bg ht n busness when the dorms opened," he sad. But lfe n the Quad of yesteryear dffered drastcally from the ways n whch today's Quad resdents lve. ove-n day meant more than brngng your stereo, computer, bcycle and other possessons that the frst year student lugs wth them to school n the 1990s. In the early part of the twenueth century, t was not uncommon for students to brng n baby grand panos and entre sets of furnture. Students from wealthy famles would completely refurnsh ther rooms. Some rooms even had open freplaces. kel Huber, the executve secretary general of the Alumn Socety, sad the practce of completely remodelng a dorm room bascally stopped after the Great Depresson and World War II. "After World War II, people ddn't brng furnture wth them," he sad. "You had a desk, char and a bed. People ddn't bother to brng n elaborate furnshngs." Although students n the 1930s. 1940s and 1950s may not have had rooms as lavsh as ther brethren n the earler part of the century, these students stll enjoyed a luxury many students today would love to have cleanng lades to pck up ther rooms. Huber. a Unversty alumnus, sad when he lved n the Quad there were housekeepng servces. "They were called the 'P* lades," he sad. "The 'P' was for Pennsylvana." The 'P' lades cleaned ndvdual student's rooms, hallways and the bathrooms, Huber sad. He added that students generally treated these women ncely, nvtng them to ask and Wg shows and other student performances. Whle students lvng n the Quad may have had more comfortable surroundngs n the frst few decades of the twenteth century, they also had many more rules and regulatons they had to abde by. The Paretal Commttee was n charge of lookng after the behavor of students lvng n dormtores. The Commttee conssted of fve people, four of them proctors who lved n the dormtores. For men, gamblng, drnkng and havng women n a dorm room were all volatons of Unversty polces, whch the Paretal Commttee enforced. Huber sad, although there were regulatons about drnkng, they were not observed much. The ban on women n rooms was strctly enforced, however. In 1917, the Unversty Commttee on Student Resdences voted to not approve "houses offerng accommodatons to both sexes." "You could not have women n the dorms at all durng the week," Huber sad. "There were some hours on weekends but even then you had to keep your door open." Workng n tandem wth the Paretal Commttee was the Unversty's Housng Commttee, a group that set the rules and regulatons for not only h> dormtores, but the fraterntes and roomng houses as well. In 1931, the Housng Commttee, n ts report about student resdences on and off-campus, had an entre secton devdted to the ssue of fndng women n a room wth a man. "If women are entertaned wthout permsson or proper chaperonage, the Commttee assumes that they are there for no moral purposes and acts accordngly," the report read. Students who chose not to lve n the Quad were restrcted n where they could lve. Unversty polcy dctated that students had to lve wth ther famles, or n a dormtory, fraternty or roomng house regstered wth the Un versty. Students found n a non-regstered house were requred to leave wthn ten days. The Housng Commttee sent propretors of all roomng and boardng houses, hotels and apartments a letter askng them to regster wth the Unversty. In the letter, there was a lst of all Unversty rules and regula tons. Landlords were expected to make sure students followed these rules. In addton, roomng houses were nspected by the Unversty's Housng Commttee three or four tmes a year. As lvng on campus became more popular over the years, the Quad became the center for a Unversty student's socal lfe. "IThe Quadl was sort of a crucble for Unversty culture," Ellot sad. Bonfres were commonly lt n the Quad, he added. And the Quad was generally the center for class fghts and rval res, specfcally between freshmen and sophomores.' "If you were a freshman and you lved on campus you lved n the Quad." Huber sad, thnk ths dd a lot for chss sprt." Huber sad ths class sprt man-». *1* fested tself n the form of freshmen hazng that took place n the Quad. A group of sophomores known as the Vglante Commttee were n charge of enforcng freshman regulatons early on n the semester. Freshmen were expected to always wear a black knt te and a red and blue hat that resembled a skull cap to class. Huber sad f the Vglante Commttee thought they saw someone who was a freshman not wearng the te and cap then they would pull the student asde and ask for hs ID card. Volators of the rule would be sent back to ther room to get ther te and cap. However, Huber added that the "Are you gong to tell a guy who fought hs way through the battle of Guadalcanal that he has to go back to hs room and get hs te?" he sad. r uch of the socal lfe n the Quad centered on athletc» compettons. Huber sad students played a lot of touch football and other sports. "It was a male socety n there." he sad. Perhaps the most nfamous of campus tradtons orgnated n the Quad the Rowbottoms. The Rowbottoms grew out of an annual Crockery Break that occurred at the end of each school year. Students threw ther wash bowls and UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES. Room 235, a sngle sut n the Lower Quadrangle n Cleemann House, as seen n freshmen regulatons were really a hoax. The Vglante Commttee would not take any dscplnary acton f stu dents dd not go back to ther rooms. Ths tradton fell apart after World War II. Huber sad wth so many vet erans of the war comng back and at tendng school, t was foolsh to expect a war hero to wear a skull cap. ptchers out ther wndows, fgurng the school year was almost over and assumng they would not need them at home. Durng one Crockery Break n 1910, legend has t that frends of Unver sty student Joseph T. Rowbottom called up to hs roorrr-askng hm to come out and party wth them. Rowbottom, beng a student n every sense of the word, gnored ther cres and contnued workng. Hs frends perssted and began shoutng "Yea, Rowbottom." Eventually the entre Quad joned n the chant In subsequent years. Tea, Rowbottom" came to symbolze the fun and socal nteracton that took place n the Quad Followng a cry of "'Yea. Rowbol torn."' students would go out and wresue wth each other and engage n other athletc contests But 'Rowbottoms" dd not always consst of good, clean fun. Wth greater frequency throughout the 1940s and 1950s Rowbottoms became more rowdy as students would leave ther dorms and take to the streets. On ay the most volent Rowbottom occurred as 138 students were arrested for overturnng cars and settng up barrers on Spruce and Lo cust streets. the greater.. part of the early twenteth century the Quad was the source of campus lfe and the only choce for a student who wshed to lve on U»e Unversty's campus to stay. "Nobody thought of t as desrable or undesrable back then." Huber sad. "That's all there was." Today, students have a varety of choces for where they want to lve. The Quad s no longer a student's only on-campus opton Stll, many freshmen choose to lve ther frst year at the Unversty n the Quad, the one dormtory on campus steeped n almost a century of tradton.

5 UA offers ways to cut Dnng Servces' costs By RANDI FEIGKNBAU Daly Pennsylvanan Stall Wrter The Undergraduate Assembly unanmously supported "cost-effectve" recommendatons for the Unversty Dnng Servces' budget last nght at ts meetng. Wharton sophomore Dan Debcella, a member of the UA Budget Commttee, presented the report contanng the recommendatons, along wth a fact sheet detalng the Dnng Servces' budget. "Ths s somethng that affects 50 percent of the student body," he sad. "It's mportant for everyone." The report advocated four changes n Dnng Servces: ncreasng the number of work study students, seekng corporate sponsorshps, reducng redundant advertsng expenses and analyzng the usefulness of several lesser known programs. Accordng to Debcella, the frst recommendaton s the most mpor tant. Because unonzed Dnng Servces' workers make almost $3 mllon n salares, the UA report advocates the hrng of more work study students, who earn at least $4 less per hour, and placng a hrng freeze on the unon workers. Debcella admts that logstcal problems wth schedulng work-study students mght occur when more stu dents are hred. "[Bull the cost of schedulng s mnmal compared wth the savngs you'll get," he added. The second recommendaton dealt wth "monotony breakers" specalty nghts whch feature food from Pzzera Uno, Nabsco or other com- 4r jphs s somethng that affects 50 per- JL cent of the student body. It's mportant for everyone.' panes. These meals currently cost $68,293. To cut costs, the UA report suggests corporate sponsorshp n whch the companes would receve free publcty n exchange for ther specalty meals. The thrd recommendaton detals a reducton n advertsng expenses. Debcella gave the example of the Hll House Hoage Bar whch adver tses n the Hll House Dnng Hall tself. "Thngs lke that are just neffcent and should be done away wth," he sad. The last recommendaton asks for the analyss of varous pro grams' usefulness. Ths ncludes the "box lunches" program, whch, accordng to Debcella, s unknown to most students. "They should look nto t and see f a lot of students use t or f t needs more publcty," he added. UA Charperson and College junor Seth Hamalan sad a report on Res dental Lvng's budget wll be re leased by the end of the year. But other budget reports are not forthcomng. "We wanted to gve them feedback and attack t from a student body's vewpont," he sad. "But the schools saw ft to call one another and then wthhold ther budgets from the commttee." At last nght's meetng the UA also heard reports from the Class Boards and the Socal Plannng and Events Commttee n preparaton for ts arch 20 budget meetng. February The COISSION ON STRENGTHENING THE COUNITY nvtes all members of the Unversty to an OPEN FORU ON THE PRELIINARY REPORT February 22 12:00-1:30 p.m Stenberg-Detrch Hall re Y u 3 red, Clubs host second Culture Nght By USA LEVENSON Daly Peonsylvaruan Statl Wrter The Chnese Students Assocaton and the Hong Kong Club jontly host ed the second annual Culture Nght Saturday. Held n Houston Hall's Bodek Lounge, the free event attracted between 150 and 200 people. College ju nor and CSA Presdent Jen Lu sad In fact, Wharton sophomore and CSA Cultural Co-Charperson Daphne Cho sad the large turnout resulted n a shortage of seats. Lu sad there were 12 acts durng the program, ncludng three vocal performances, three dances and a number of demonstratons. One demonstraton featured trcks done wth the dablo, a Chnese toy smlar to the yo-yo. The kungfu demonstrators and Lon Dance performers came from the Hung Gar Kung Fu Academy. But the majorty of artsts and actors were Unversty students, Lu sad. College sophomore Karen Chan, CSA cultural co-charperson, sad plannng for the Culture Nght began mmedately followng wnter break, snce costumes for some acts had to be shpped from Boston and New York. "I am happy that t worked out really fne," Chan sad. She added that some performers even had out-oftown frends come n for the show. Cho also sad she s happy about the apparent success of Culture Nght. "1 thnk people really responded to the fact that we had tradtonal as well as modem acts, showcasng the wde range of actvtes wthn the culture," she sad. "From kungfu to modem sngng and Chnese opera, [the pro gram gave examples of ] dfferent styles throughout the tmes." Cho sad ths year the Culture Nght program had fewer nstrumental peces and a few more modem peces "to get the crowd gong." She sad the organzng clubs hope to nvolve more students n the performances next year. "Culture Nght shows so much of the Chnese culture," she added. "It shows how extensve the talents and tradtons are a lot of people who aren't Chnese came and saw t." Hong Kong Club Presdent Bran Lee, a Wharton and College junor, sad hs group as well as CSA s tryng to buld on the success of Saturday's program. "We just wanted people to know more about the Chnese culture," he sad. "We thought t was mportant to do somethng durng Chnese New Year." "Our greatest need s to change the mndset of how we deal wth prob lems," argued Boston ayor Thomas enno. All panelsts seemed to agree that n order to change ths mndset the cty must frst set a reasonable expectaton level. "It s mportant that...we make t farly clear what [the people) can reasonably expect the government to do and not to do," Rendell sad. "The government can't do everythng." Rendell added that one of government's central purposes s to gve people the hope of makng lfe better for themselves. "People want to work," he sad. "It s our oblgaton n Amercan socety to gve them that opportunty." That oblgatoa Rendell added, s 6 /^\ur greatest need s to change the V^/mndset of how we deal wth problems.' "one of the bggest problems facng Amercan ctes today." Ths problem and others were the central focus of the two-hour mayoral panel. "I thought that there were some solutons presented that weren't debat ed before," Km sad. "There was a great dversty of ssues, not just one topc n solaton." Conference organzers seemed generally pleased wth the turnout and the panels. Yet the student organzers receved lttle help from the admnstraton. Km sad. "It was very dffcult n terms of plannng the conference to get support from the admnstraton," she added. "It was only once they saw t would work that they started to sup- Thomas enno Boston ayor port us." The student coordnators sad they were able to organze the event wth "no real problems." And accordng to Km, ther efforts resulted n a great degree of audence satsfacton and nteracton. The conference speakers respond ed to the audence wth a great deal of optmsm. 9 UA offers ways to cut Dnng Servces' costs Bv By RANDI KAN 1)1 FEIGENBAU FEIGENRAII Daly Pennsylvaman Stall Wrter The Undergraduate Assembly unanmously supported "cost-effec tve" recommendatons for the Unversty Dnng Servces' budget last nght at ts meetng. Wharton sophomore Dan Debcel la, a member of the UA Budget Commttee, presented the report contanng the recommendatons, along wth a fact sheet detalng the Dnng Servces' budget. Accordng to Debcella, the frst recommendaton s the most mportant. Because unonzed Dnng Servces' workers make almost $3 mllon n salares, the UA report advocates the hrng of more work study students, who earn at least $4 less per hour, and placng a hrng freeze on the unon workers. Debcella admts that logstcal problems wth schedulng work-study students mght occur when more students are hred. "[But] the cost of schedulng s mnmal compared wth the savngs you'll get," he added. Formulatng ther report was undoubted ly arduous, and a certan amount of satsfacton s deserved to those nvolved, however, one must remember that t s not a savor for the U.'s problems. There s one topc so crucal to the Unversty that s not even mentoned n the report. In fact, our admnstrators won't even menton t, and try to pretend that t's not even here. No, t's not gay rghts or even date rape. (Although these ssues are mportant.) There s a tremendous amount of crme on and around ths campus. And f you thnk that the Unversty Polce have t under control, you're wrong. y HRS room was burglar zed over the Chrstmas break last year, and the Unversty clamed that t was n no way lable! Last semester, a CGS student was taken off the street, one block from a Polce n- Staton, raped, and shot n the head. What was the admnstrators' reacton to these crmes? In the frst case, a sngular meetng was called by offcals. At ths meetng, nothng was sad that comforted those vctmzed, n fact, the Unversty even admtted that t doesn't change the locks n our dormtores. That means anyone can go to a locksmth and copy ther key, beleve me you can, and clean out the belongngs of next year's n habtants. 13 Speaker dscusses causes of volent crme By RYAN PAPIR Daly Pennsylvanan Stall Wrter In 1992,26,570 Amercans lost ther lves as a result of nterpersonal volence, Chukwud Onwuach-Saunders sad Frday as she dscussed volence as a publc health problem n Stenberg Detrch Hall. Onwuach Saunders, deputy health commssoner for Phladelpha, sad publc health cannot completely curb volence because t "s truly a psycho-socal problem." She sad n order to try to prevent volence, people must be aware of who s at rsk n potentally volent stuatons. She explaned that both the perpetrator and vctm tend to be men of the same race n a typcal homcde. She also ponted out that the vctm usually knows the offender. "So we're talkng about males who predomnantly look lke each other, who know each other." she sad. The deputy health commssoner sad the meda's presentaton of volence s not true to fact. Afrcan- Amercans are made to seem lke perpetrators of volence more often 6 Tt's not enough to target out the XAfrcan-Amercan male because he doesn't lve n solaton.' than they actually are, she explaned. Although homcde rates for Afrcan-Amercans are greater than those for whtes, the number of homcdes commtted by blacks s not sgnfcantly hgher than the number for whtes, she added. And she sad, contrary to popular belef, most homcdes are not asso cated wth a felony. The majorty of homcdes are caused by conflct and arguments n whch the perpetrator already knows the vctm. Onwuach Saunders sad an Afrcan Amercan male's chance of vctmzaton s 1 n 27, whle the rate for hs whte counterpart s 1 n 205. "Homcde beng the leadng cause of death for Afrcan-Amercans s Chukwud Onwuach-Saunders Phladelpha Deputy Health Commssoner nothng new," she sad. "But what s new s the dramatc ncrease for the younger Afrcan-Amercan male." She also sad snce 1984, the rate for deaths n whch frearms are used has skyrocketed. Onwuach-Saunders also spoke about the communty program Op eraton Peace for Phladelpha She sad the program s a "communtywde comprehensve neghborhood based publc prvate volence preventon ntatve." OPP conssts of 12 teams, ncludng schools and meda and arts, whch try to prevent volence. She also sad t s mportant to look at where chldren learn volent behavor. "If young people are showng some type of behavor that we as adults are not pleased wth, sometmes we're to blame," she sad "They learned t from somewhere." She sad perpetrators cannot be separated from vctms because perpetrators were once vctms Onwuach Saunders sad collectve responsblty s a key to reducng the amount of volence n the Unted States. "It's not enough to target out the Afrcan Amercan male because he doesn't lve n solaton," she sad "He's a part of a whole, just as we are all a part of a whole" any audence members seemed to feel the lecture was worthwhle. Sports Wrter Occasonally, when a team seems to be runnng on all cylnders and everythng s gong ts way, adversty wll rear ts ugly head and serve to brng the team back to earth. Ths s exactly what happened to the Penn wrestlng team ths weekend as t ht a stumblng block n the quest for a school-record 18th wn. The Quakers (16-5) traveled to East Stroudsburg and had a dsappontng showng. Despte crushng Prnceton to formally clnch the Ivy League ttle and defeatng Frankln & arshall, Penn suffered from lack of motvaton n droppng a decson to the East Stroudsburg Warrors. The Quaker-Warror matchup was the marquee event of the evenng. Both schools were lookng for school records for wns n a season, and the memory of Penn's 32-7 vctory a year ago served as added motvaton for both teams. But n the end, the battle wasn't as heated as had been antcpated, and the Quakers struggled to wn only three of Recycle Ths DP Student Performng Arts at the Unversty of Pennsylvana presents Lumnares of the Stage Chrstopher d'ambose, Artstc Drector of the Pennsylvana ballet And dancers Jeffrey Grbler and Jennta Russo wll offer a Lecture/Demonstraton. "East Stroudsburg was defntely gunnng for us," Penn junor tn captan Bran Butler sad. "If you focus on somebody, you're gong to wrestle better than ever and we were ther focus. We were the hghlght of ther season beatng us was what they wanted. Plan and smple, we're a bet ter team than they are and t's our fault It was defntely a mental lapse." Despte the dffcult nature of the defeat and the fact t came so late n the season, the Quakers feel they can take somethng postve out of the weekend. Both Butler and fellow tr-captan Gary Baker wrestled well enough to pull out vctores at East Stroudsburg, provdng an example for ther Penn teammates. Also, ths loss may serve as a wake up call for Penn whch was crusng along to one of ts best seasons n years that success doesn't come easly, and the better you are the harder you have to try to stay at the top. The Quakers know t's better they receve ths message now, than n two weeks at Easterns. "It's gong to help our team a lot," Baker sad. "For a whle, we lost our focus, and ths put us back on track. People were perhaps takng thngs for granted. Gettng [beat! lke ths can always put you back n lne. We learned our lesson, and come Easterns, I thnk we'll show that we are the better team." The Quakers come back next week wth a home meet aganst Wlkes and Coppn State. Wth Easterns loomng n two weeks, there s some danger of lookng ahead to the more mportant of the two meets. However, after ths weekend's gut check, Penn does not want to be sdetracked agan, and looks to be more ntense than ever. The Quakers want to prove ther season has not been a fluke, and the East Stroudsburg loss was an aberraton rather than a sgn of thngs to come. "Today, coach [Roger Renal set us down and re focused us," freshman 167-pounder Brandon Slay sad. "We're not gong to look past next week. We're gong to wrestle to the best of our capabl tes. We have to focus on our goals and step t up and work harder." Hoops games should be doubleheaders WALENTAS from BACK PAGE try, st almost vacant durng any bas ketball game. The lack of fan support also neu tralzes home-court advantage, whch could concevably cost the Quakers a wn or two a year. Last weekend's one-pont loss to Brown serves as just one example. A nosy and rowdy crowd can normally take credt for a few mssed opposton free throws, a turnover or at least greater defen sve ntensty from the Quakers. Ths combnaton has to be worth several ponts per home game, especally n tght games that go down to the wre. Although the current players and coaches on the women's team would obvously prefer more people n the stands, nobody has ever questoned the reasons for the current Ivy League polcy. In fact, nobody on the team knew why the system of staggered road trps even exsted. There are some vald reasons, however. Jeff Orleans, Presdent of the Ivy Group, ponted out that the system not only gves the women's teams an ndependent dentty and enables every Ivy school to host a basketball game every Frday and Saturday nght throughout the season, but that the staggered roadtrps may provde greater flexblty for many schools to operate ther facltes. Not every Ivy nsttuton has an arena lke the Palestra that can be dedcated exclusvely to basketball. Perhaps t would be more advantageous for the women's teams to sacrfce some of that supposed "n dependent dentty" n return for more fan support, regardless of peo pe's true ntentons. So what f peo pe are only at games because the men play next? ost people on Penn's campus have never had any exposure to our women's basketball team. If more peo pe went to games and became some what famlar wth the team, they may become fans. As t s now, more Penn students st n ther bedrooms and ls ten to our NCAA bound Quakers on the rado than journey down to the Palestra to watch the women. Sever- al fans voyaged hundreds of mles up to New England ths weekend to see the men play. Only 212 voyaged a few blocks to see the women play Har vard Saturday nght. Ths should not be an ssue of gen der equty or any other n.alter of po ltcal correctness. The Ivy athletc departments have an oblgaton to do what s best for all of ts teams. It seems to me that Ivy League dou bleheaders would beneft the women's basketball programs at no body's expense. Lke any proposal for change, there are advantages and dsadvantages for the Ivy League. Rght now, for the Penn basketball programs, there seem to only be advantages. Perhaps ths s somethng the players, the coaches and the admnstrators should nvestgate, and perhaps even experment wth on a lmted bass of one roadtrp per year. 15 onday. February 21. l«w4 The Daly Pennsylvana!) Page 11 Gymnasts mprove at Towson By JANE HAVSY Daly Pennsytvaman Sports Wrter No one had any expectatons for the Penn gymnastcs team outsde of the Ivy League. But lately, the Quakers have been shockng ther competton and elmnatng those who doubted them. Ths weekend was no excepton, as Penn fnshed n a fourth-place te wth aryland at the Towson Invtatonal. "We beat some teams that had no dea we exsted," Penn senor co-captan ona Nedjar sad. "We're at the pont where no matter what, we're fghtng." Hstorcally, Towson has been a very compettve meet for the Quakers <l-2). There, Penn had a rematch wth several teams t faced at the George Washngton Invtatonal earler ths season, n eludng crosstown rval Temple, aryland, Wllam & ary and George Washngton. The Quakers also faced North Carolna and host Towson State for the frst tme. "It's a lttle more pressure than a dual meet," freshman Dawn Landau sad. "I thnk everyone rose to the occason, and I'm really proud of how we all dd." The Towson Invtatonal s unusual because the number of teams competng causes long breaks between events. The Quakers had no doubts of ther own abltes, but the competton was of hgh qualty. As Penn watched the other squads, the pressure bult up. When t was all over, the team members were thrlled wth ther showng. "We certanly weren't expectng a fourth place fnsh," senor co-captan ary Pedersen sad. "We were surprsed to see that we beat UNC and Wllam & ary. It's a great feelng to fnsh n the mddle of that pack." Ths year's fourth-place fnsh marks drastc mprovement for a Penn squad that fnshed last out of seven teams a season ago. "Last year, we were clearly outdstanced," Penn coach Tom Kovc sad. "We normally use that type of competton to try to rse to that level. It's hard to predct what's gong to happen." Followng the same rotaton t wll have to deal wth at the upcomng Ivy champonshps, Penn started out on ts best event, the balance beam. The Quakers' performance there was a lttle shaky, but they mproved as they moved through the evenng. Even n ts fnal and weakest event the un even bars, Penn dd not falter, countng sx out of sx routnes. "We're gettng towards the end of the season now," Kovc sad. "Each meet s buldng for the next. We're as good, f not a better team, than our competton." The Quakers are focused on next weekend's quadrangular meet aganst Dvson III Ursnus. and Ivy rvals Brown and Cornell. They are also thnkng about qualfyng for the ECACs as a team. Snce only the top seven teams n the dvson can do that, Penn needs a hgh combned total score n. Hoops beats Crmson by one pont CLOSE from BACK PAGE how close the game was and found themselves n the unfamlar terrtory of facng ther frst Ivy League loss n 23 games, a defeat at Columba arch 6,1992. "Ths was defntely our game to lose," Trce sad. "Harvard had nothng to lose by tryng to wn. Ths was a bg game for us. Usually we're used to blowouts. Ths was a lot closer than we're used to. It was the frst tme we have been n ths stuaton n the Ives for a long tme." "We just dd not concentrate," Perce sad. "All the good teams get lucky once n a whle and come out of a game wth a wn they shouldn't wn. I thnk that was the case tonght....we got away wth one, but we have to go back and look ourselves n the mrror and thnk about what t takes to be an Ivy champon." In contrast, Penn exploded wth 18-4 run n the second half to coast to the vctory n Frday's game at Dartmouth. Smlarly to Harvard, the Quakers were plagued by poor shootng n the frst half, ncludng a dsmal 3 for 15 from three-pont land. Penn attempted nearly twce as many shots n the frst 20 mnutes as the Bg Green (38-20). yet only managed to brng an eght pont lead nto the locker room. Dartmouth stayed close behnd se nor pont guard Gregg Frame, who easly cut through the Penn defense and more or less sngle handedly kept the Bg Green n the game. Dart mouth made many mstakes. Frame's quck passes nsde were of ten bumbled by hs teammates. The Bg Green also turned the ball over 25 tmes, ncludng fve whstles for trav ellng. Frame's mpressve play dd not carry over to the second half, as he was all but slenced. Dunphy swtched Perce to cover the explosve captan. Perce attrbutes Frame's shutdown more to fatgue Freshman guard Sea Lonergan, a strong canddate for Ivy Rooke of the Year, stepped up wth 15 secondhalf ponts, fnshng wth 20 ponts (4 for 5 three-ponters). "I thnk he got tred," Perce sad. "I thnk I was just fortunate that I was guardng hm. I thnk any of our guys could have done the same job." The Quakers exploded durng the second half and completely dom nated the play. After Dartmouth closed wthn two ponts Penn went on an 18-4 run to put the game out of reach. Only the play of Loner gan avoded a blowout. The Quakers were led by ther backcourt tandem of aloney (20 ponts) and Allen (18 ponts). Trce added 10 ponts and grabbed a ca reer hgh 17 rebounds, ncludng fve on the offensve end. Despte the wn, Perm's play was marked by an nconsstent frst half, much lke the game at Harvard Sat urday. Although the Quakers may have come up wth wns both nghts, nconsstency was almost fatal aganst the Crmson. "In some stretches we're playng well and n some we're not playng as well or consstent," Penn coach Fran Dunphy sad after the Dartmouth game. "I would certanly lke them to be more consstent. But we are wnnng, and I'll gve them that credt But f we keep dong ths, we'll have problems." And those words uttered by Dunphy Frday proved prophetc. Thankfully for the Quakers. Krug was n the rght place at just the rght tme. Campbell gets most out of 5-10 frame CAPBELL from BACK PAGE and put t n the basket on a reverse layup. On the very next possesson, he penetrated the lane and banked the ball hgh off the glass over the outstretched arms of senor 6-8 cen ter Andy Baratla to get Harvard back wthn three. And Campbell's offensve herocs contnued after the ntermsson. Once agan, when t appeared as f the Quakers were posed to fnally put the Crmson away. Campbell, all 5-10 of hm, crashed the offensve boards. When Harvard's tallest player, junor center Kevn Frcka, mssed hs shot, the shortest player tpped the ball n the basket. On the very next possesson, Campbell mssed a scoop shot But he got hs own rebound and scored an other basket to quckly cut the Penn lead back down to three. Ths trend of endng Quaker runs, and keepng the Crmson close occurred agan and agan as the senor captan provded Harvard wth clutch shots throughout the contest. So t was no surprse n the fnal sec onds t was Campbell who had the ball. Every fan. every player and every coach wll always remember the fnal play of the game. After the Quakers put the ball n ther go to man's hands and Allen was stopped, the Crmson tred the same phlosophy Campbell brought the ball down the court as the clock wound down to sngle dgts. He used a pck to squrt nto the lane, whch he seemed to be able to do almost at wll throughout the contest. As aloney got caught by the pck, the lanky Krug tred to stay wth the quckest man on the court. And although Campbell was gv ng away 11 nches n heght and ffl fl 1 1 «(1 1 II 1 [ffllffl II J /?e*</ >/=> /><?rte Schlngballs, It's about tme! Happy 21st seemngly another foot n arm length, he took the last shot of the game wth hs team down by only one. "He's really quck," Penn senor forward Barry Perce sad. "He doesn't shoot well, but he lkes to get n the lane and throw up herky jerky shot*." And that was exactly what Camp bell dd as tme wound down, even though he was faced wth a much taller Krug n hs face. "I just tred to keep hm n front of me as best I could," Krug sad. ONDAY FEBRAURY 21,1994 JEFFREY HUROK/DP Senor Photographer Harvard senor captan Tark Campbell drves to the basket for the fnal shot of the game Saturday nght. Penn sophomore forward Tm Krug (23) defends Campbell, and eventually blocked the shot to save the game. Campbell comes up short By JOSHUA FRIEDAN Daly Pennsylvanan Sports Wrter BOSTON Al 5 foot-10, he doesn't look lke an ntmdatng athlete, and especally not a basketball player. No one throughout the Ivy League mentons hs name n the same breath as Jerome -ulen or att aloney. Whle those two both were on the all- Ivy frst team last season, he ddn't even receve honorable menton honors. And f the ball waren't always n Harvard guard Tark Campbell's hands, no one would even notce hm on the court. [ At Courtsde But when the Crmson hosted the Penn men's basketball team Saturday, everyone n the Brggs Athletc Center had ther eyes traned on the smallest man on the court. "He was very quck." Penn sophomore forward Tm Krug sad of Campbell. "He was able to get past att [aloneyl and Jerome (Allen] a lot of tmes, and that s just not easy to do. I gve hm a lot of cred- W. Hoops can't pull off weekend sweep By LUKE DeCOCK Daly Pennsylvanan Sports Wrter If the Penn women's basketball team underwent psychatrc evaluaton, the dagnoss would no doubt be schzophrena. After gong on the road earler ths season and beatng Harvard and losng to Dartmouth, the Quakers hosted the same two teams n the Palestra ths weekend. However, ths tme the results were the exact opposte. Penn nursed an early second-half lead to hold on for a vctory over the Bg Green Frday. Harvard avenged Perm's vctory n Boston over wnter break wth a thrash ng of the Quakers Saturday. The weekend began on a good note for Penn when the Quakers (7-14, 3-6 Ivy League) dropped leagueleadng Dartmouth for ther second consecutve vctory. After extendng a seven-pont halftme lead to nne, the Quakers let the Bg Green (12-9, 7-3) back nto the game, fallng be hnd just more than fve mnutes nto the half. At that pont Penn awoke and went on the 14-2 run whch gave the Quakers the lead for good. That sx-mnute, 12 pont swng was sparked by sx ponts and two asssts from freshman guard Amy Tarr. who was spellng junor guard Shelly Bowers. Her sx ponts and three asssts were both career hghs for Ivy League W. Hoops Standngs Brown Dartmou; ujg Prncet XX Yale Harva PENN^ Cornel' Columba ^ FRIDAY NIGHT'S GAES Brown 59. Cornell 65 the freshman, who played rarely before fellow freshman Deana Lews njured her knee one month ago. Snce then, the 5-foot 9 Tarr has played n all nne games as the second player off the bench, scorng a total 16 ponts. Penn coach Jule Sorero saw Tarr's prmary contrbuton to the run as defensve, though. "I thought we were gettng beat wth a lot of cuts off the ball and that got us n a lttle bt of trouble," Sorero sad. "Defensvely, I put Amy n for Shelly wth the thought that maybe Amy's postonng off the ball was a lttle better." That seemed to work because by the tme Dartmouth guard Betsy Glmore ht a layup to end a stretch of 10 consecutve Penn ponts, the damage had been done. Penn fought to hold that lead for the rest of the game as Sally Anns connected from each corner behnd the three-pont arc n one mnute to cut Penn's lead from nne to three. The Quakers held on as junor forward Shelly Deterle ht 2 of 4 free throws n the last few mnutes to ce the vctory "When they have players out there who can shoot the three-ponter, t's easy for them to Ivy Overall VI come back," Penn coach Jule Sorero sad. "I thnk we sagged off of them a lttle too much. We were a lttle too conservatve defensvely." Throughout the contest, Penn's co-captans shone. Senor center Katarna Poulsen led Penn wth 16 ponts, 10 n the second half, whle senor forward Jule Gabrel had a game-hgh seven rebounds and added 10 ponts. Her fve asssts and sx steals were both team hghs. Anns had 19 ponts for the Bg Green, whch also had a team record broken by center Ilsa Wlbeck. who had nne blocks. Saturday's loss was marked by poor shootng on Penn's part, as the Quakers ht less than 24 percent from the feld n the frst half. In fact, untl the 14:12 mark n the frst half, the Quakers had mssed ther frst 10 attempts from the floor as the Crmson jumped out to an early seven-pont lead. Throughout the remander of the half, Har vard contnued to ht ts outsde shots and bult ts lead to by the ntermsson. The Crmson shot 60 percent and were 8 of 10 from long dstance, led by Tammy Butler and Elzabeth Proudft, who each scored 10 ponts. Please see SPLIT, page 10 t, he played well." Throughout the contest, whch was a re match of Perm's 17-pont blowout n the Palestra n the begnnng of the year, Campbell consstently took t upon hmself to keep the Crmson n the game. In the frst half, when t appeared as f the Quakers were pullng away wth a 7-2 run, t was Campbell who brought the Crmson back nto strkng range. The 5-foot-10 guard's efforts were dashed when Penn sophomore forward Tm Krug blocked hs shot. As the ball rolled off Harvard guard Jared Leake's back and out of bounds, tme expred and the Quakers escaped wth ther closest Ivy wn of the season at Brggs Cage. The game was a hardfought, as Penn ( Ivy League) dd not take the lead untl seven mnutes nto the frst half, and never led by more than seven ponts. The emotonal Crmson went on a 12-2 run to regan the lead wth 5:48 left n the second half before the Quakers scored sx unanswered ponts and fought to hold on for the vctory. The Penn vctory followed Frday nght's wn over Dartmouth. Although the margn was larger n Hanover, N.H., the story was the same nconsstent Penn frst half efforts. The Quakers were able to end the half wth a sx-pont lead, despte mssng several open shots and errant passes. "We had far too many mental lapses wth broken down plays," Penn junor forward Shawn Trce sad. "We lost our ntensty on de fense too at tmes. We had a lot of breakdowns. We just were not as aggressve." Throughout the frst half. Penn was able to overcome ts mstakes and penetrate the Crmson defense several tmes for fast-break layups. Crmson sophomore forward Darren Rankn, who was shutout n the frst half, poured n 14 ponts, ncludng a three-pont prayer that banked n as the shot clock sound ed, tyng the game at 58 and brngng the Har vard crowd to ts feet. Penn also had ts share of crowd-pleasng moves. After a block by Krug early after nter msson. Allen took the ball and led the fast break, dshng t off to a oney, who followed wth a no-look pass to center Erc oore for the bucket as Quaker fans went wld Penn followed ths act later n the second stanza wth an Allen alley oop dunk from aloney. But regardless of the Quaker dramatcs, Harvard remaned composed throughout the game, and never folded. Even after a aloney layupoff a Perce rebound, and a fast-break Perce layup of hs own, the Crmson remaned posed. After a tmeout wth a lttle more than two mnutes remanng n the contest. Rankn grabbed an often sve rebound and put t back after sophomore forward chael Glmore mssed an open three-pont attempt, and the Crmson was down by just one, After both teams came up empty durng the fnal 30 seconds, Allen beat hs man and drove nto the lane only to mss the shot Harvard reganed the ball wth 17 seconds left on the clock It was a moment that seemed lke t had been planned the entre nght. Consderng the fact the average attendance at the Palestra ths year s just more than 200 people per game, t probably wasn't recently. Although ths team s not exactly the eptome of sportng entertanment, there are ways to generate more support for many of Penn's second-ter teams, ncludng women's basketball. The best way to create a greater n terest n the women's program would be to schedule Ivy League doubleheaders, wth the women's games precedng the men. In ths scenaro, there would be a much hgher lkel hood that anyone gong to ether game would come early or stay late Ths trend has been clearly documented by the four events ths year where Penn has been part of a dou bleheader. The women played before the men at the Palestra before the Lafayette game, at cgongle Hall aganst Temple and at Jadwn Gym for the Prnceton doubleheader. In these cases, many Quaker fans came ear ly to see both games. Even f people do not necessarly come for the entre game, ther presence for crunch tme late n the second half has consderable value. The fnal example s when the women's team played Vllanova at the Cvc Center before a La Salle Temple men's game. In ths case as well, many of the spectators came early to see the women's acton. How ever, at Penn at least, the Quakers have not bult a substantal ndepen dent fan base.
