Students Protest GLHj: (Contnued from page 1) between t he Unversty and the Cvl S e r v c e Employees Assocaton (CSEA). The dspute began after the, csea learned that campus employees would be deprved of parkng spaces n the admnstraton lot when t closed for constructon. The CSEA obtaned an njuncton whch temporarly halted the constructon, but the njuncton was later lfted. Dr. Rchard Schmdt, Actng Unversty Presdent, and Polty Presdent Davd Herzog sgned an agreement statng that the resdent spaces would be allocated to faculty and staff and that a 14 space lot for resdents' cars would be quckly constructed by the tenns courts adjacent to Langmur College. The agreement was made, Herzog sad, because constructon of the admnstraton lot "led to an unavodable problem." He sad t was the best arrangement for faculty, students and staff untl the admnstraton parkng complex s completed. rvng and O'Nell resdents, however, have obj ected to the arrangement, contendng they are nconvenenced and are subject to unsafe condtons. The flyers they dstrbuted stated, "The students fear the possblty of beng assaulted and raped when returnng at late hours to the Langmur parkng lot and havng to walk back to G Quad." The demonstraton was proposed by rvng resdents Jm Zto and Renzo Renz at the buldng's legslature meetng Monday nght. Zto, Renz and several other resdents spent the nght makng sgns, and n the mornng went from door to door askng students to partcpate. Sympathetc Many faculty and staff members appeared sympathetc to the demonstraton, choosng to park elsewhere on campus. Others left reluctantly, however, and some decded to park n the lot anyway. Those parkng were booed r o u n d y by t h e demonstrators. "They are makng t hard on everybody," sad campus employee Carol Sullvan, who parked despte protests. About 15 faculty ON l Mlt J and staff members parked n the lot durng the demonstraton. The protest lasted from 7 AM untl about 1: 35 AM. t was dscontnued after many resdents left and Zto and Renz felt they had acheved ther purpose. By JOE FLAMMER f you try to catch a rde wth the Polty bus gong to Smthaven Mall, you may have a long wat. The bus to the mall, whch operated several days a week and was used by many students for food shoppng trps, has been dscontnued. Accordng to Polty Presdent Davd Herzog, the servce was suspended so that money wll be avalable for a new lne to Port Jefferson. Polty s workng to encourage merchants at the mall to provde funds to resume the servce, sad Polty Secretary Allen Prce. However, no merchants have responded. Prce sad that untl they do, there wll be no servce to the mal. Too Lmted Herzog sad the mall lne was too lmted for the students' needs. "We want to create a college atmosphere along 25A and n Port Jefferson," he explaned. "Stony Brook Coheln Took Race '''C FAR e Hgh Turnout "/ ^ «S mn=,,w qw w lw (Contnued from page 1) an hour and a half, he often greeted 5 people. About the same number greeted Cohalan as he arrved at hs headquarters last nght. When he reached the podum they cheered as he sad, "H everybody. Folks, have a message for you all John Klen has conceded defeat." The applause that followed was deafenng. All along, Cohalan had told them that a bg turnout would mean vctory. "f there's a small turnout, just the party regulars wll vote," he explaned. Hs strategy had been to draw a turnout of at least 2 percent, a fgure generally consdered hgh for a prmary. Last nght, the turnout n Cohalan's slp stronghold was about 45 percent, and countywde, t exceeded 25 percent. "We have had a huge prmary turnout," he told the crowd. "You have generated a level of enthusasm and exctement whch has never been seen n the county before." And Cohalan later noted t was that enthusasm that made the dfference. A supporter, Dr. Harvey Roth of the Coram, called Cohalan's corps of campagn workers, ty ty "Peter's People." They were young and many. Among them were several Stony Brook students, ncludng Ed Helg, an Urban Polces Scences major who to are see Fry. works for the Cohalan campagn between classes. "'ve been out on the weekends for about two months and they've been sayng a lot about hm," Helg sad of Cohalan. Tom Zampno, a junor at Stony Brook agreed. But the Cohalan landslde came as a surprse to hm. "We tle ve?n ne ld thought t was gong to be close," he sad. Even Cohalan sad he had no dea that he would wn so bg. "'m frankly amazed," he remarked, notng that he took every town but Klen's home, Smthtown. One town Cohalan dd not expect to take was Huntngton, accordng to Ron Devne, an advsor close to vly ew go th the canddate. But Cohalan dd take that town, and a woman n a green dress made sure the supervsor knew t. She stepped on stange and nterrupted hs vctory speech wth the plea, "Gve me a kss Peter, we klled them n Huntngton." Lot Desgnaton They had proposed n the flyers that "for the duraton of the constructon [of the Admnstraton garage] that the G and H parkng lot be redesgnated as resdent student and faculty staff." "f there are spaces left over, don't gve a damn f ther grandmother parks there," Zto sad Monday nght. Zto sad he would ask Herzog ths week to renegotate the parkng arrangement, addng that he may organze another demonstraton next Wednesday f necessary. Polty Changes ts Drecton; Bus Moves East From West doesn't really have a college town most students go to Port Jefferson or along 25A to do thngs." "We want to serve the most students, the best way we can," he added. "The route to Port Jefferson wll be dong that." Herzog sad the bus wll run durng the day and at nght, ncludng weekends. The fare s expected to be 25 cents for undergraduates and 5 cents for graduate students and faculty. Prce sad that out of the $7, alloted by Polty ths year for offcampus buses, $3, wll pay for the drver and mantenance of the Port Jefferson bus. The rental of the bus wll be pad by merchants n Port Jefferson and along Route 25A. Prce sad the remanng $4, wll be used for the bus to the mall f t s rensttuted. The free bus, whch s operated by 'nsttutonal Servces and runs from the nfrmary to Roth and Kelly, was requested by Vce Presdent for Student Affars Elzabeth Wadsworth. The request came n response to numerous complants to 'Lackmann Food Servce, whch operates the Unversty meal plan and the Unon Cafetera, about overcrowdng n HQuad Cafetera. The larger number of students on the meal plan ths semester would have made the crowdng even worse. "Last year students were forced to eat on the floor," sad Lackmann Regonal Drector Edde Gszewsk. "Rght now we are understaffed. f the students stagger ther meal hours nstead of arrvng together, the lnes wll not be so long," he added. 8 4 w OLPHAN EDTORALS Open to All Many new students look unon the Health Scences Center, Fne Arts complex and Earth and Space Scences buldngs wthawe and amazement. ndeed, the latter two structures won archtectural awards. To those on campus, who are dsabled, however, these buldngs, as well as several others on campus are a nghtmare. t s true that the Unversty has made substantal mprovements n some of ts facltes for the handcapped on campus. However, one should queston whether everythng possble s beng done or whether the Unversty s just fulfllng the mnmum legal requrements. Many condtons whch affect the health and safety of handcapped students are beng taken care of. However, condtons whch affect ther comfort are not. The ramp to the Health Scences Center s much too steep and should be redone. The opera hall n the Fne Arts Center s only accessble to those n wheelchars who wsh to st behnd the last row. We fnd t totally unacceptable to restrct handcapped resdents to only a few buldngs on campus. t s up to the Unversty to double ts efforts n securng mprovements for the handcapped. Plans should be made for quck and effcent operaton of snow removal ths wnter before the problem arses. Stony Brook has shown that t s wllng to respond to the needs of the handcapped.but ths s not enough. As a publc nsttuton, t s ths unversty's responsblty to lead the way n mprovng facltes for the dsabled and makng ths campus an attractve place for everyone who wshes to lve here and learn. End of a Nghtmare Stony Brook has always been assocated wth long, slow lnes. Ths seems to apply whether one s regsterng for a course, payng a bll, cashng a check or watng to get tckets for a COCA move. Lnes are not unque to Stony Brook, but there s somethng that dfferentates watng on a checkout lne to buy groceres and watng on lne to pay a tuton or housng bll. Perhaps t s that students fnd t absurd to wat so long to gve money away. Other than the usual slow pace of the lnes, one of the most aggravatng thngs about Stony Brook lnes s the length. Could you pcture gettng onto the express lnes at Pathmark wth your week's supply of yogurt and dscoverng 5 people n front of you? We beleve most people would return the yogurt to the dary secton or dspose of t n some other way and come back another tme. But t s mpossble to do that durng the last day of adddrop. Adddrop ended Monday, and the lnes nsde the Admnstraton buldng had over 1 people on them at tmes. But ths year, there was a dfference. The lnes moved quckly. The last day of adddrop was no longer the allday nghtmare of years past. How can one explan ths phenomenon?whether t s an ncreasngly effcent bureaucracy or greater student cooperaton, no one knows for sure. However, we beleve that f anyone deserves prase t s Drector of Records Wllam Strockbne, who has strven to make those lnes flow as quckly as possble. t appears that a dream come true has evolved from the nghtmare of last day adddrop. ALttle Enthusasm What ever happened to school sprt? n the 196s, Stony Brook had a lot of sprt. But today's students do not care about anythng or get nvolved n anythng, especally supportng athletc teams. Wth a new academc year and a new sports season, there s always hope that people wll get nvolved, and go out and support the teams. Today, our women's tenns team wll be facng Fordham at the campus tenns courts near the nfrmary at 3:45 PM. Saturday our football club wll face Marst College at home at 1:3 PM and the soccer team wll have an alumn game at 2 PM. n addton, the crosscountry team wll challenge Columba and C.W. Post. We hope you wll be able to attend some of these games and cheer our teams to vctory. For one, your support wll gve our players confdence, and at the same tme you'll have a ball. Letters Communty Relatons To the Edtor: As a resdent of Stony Brook, was deeply offended by the hostle antquated termnology and concept n the September 5 ssue of Statesman, of "How to keep townes, hgh school kds and other nonunversty people out of the Stony Brook Unon"... Ths was a suggeston for revvng "campus amentes." do not apprecate havng Statesman project ths vewpont to me along wth my food purchases n markets and delcatessens off campus. 9 VEWPONTS _ =e Polty: A Reflecton of Student nterests... By DAVD GROSSMAN The admnstraton has done enough! f you do not know by now, the only thns kha admnstraton wants to know of you s your D number and how much you owe them. The admnstraton's plan s to make Stony Brook the "Berkeley of the East." Many of the courses here are harder than at many unverstes across the country. The admsson and graduaton requrements are contnually gettng harder to complete and yet there s no study faclty open past mdnght, when the lbrary closes. A plan proposed last ng a newv one. We, as students, must redrect Admnstraton plannng. Ther clam s "we don't speak up." want to regenerate an old clche of the 6s "Student Power." Jon the Polty Student Government. Speak up for your rghts! We need a Unted Student Body to make progress here. Leave your name and phone number n the Polty offce n the Unon (second floor, Room 258). Let's change Stony Brook. Get nvolved Now! (The wrter s Junor Representatve and Polty Lason to the Offce of Resdence Lfe.)... Or a Tool of ntentoned Students By BABErTE E. BABCH Corrupton has always been the standard byword n the student Polty offce on the second floor of the Stony Brook Unon. Perhaps, that s not surprsng when one consders that the combnaton of more than a half mllon dollars along wth the powermongerng and selfseekng atttudes of the llntentoned students that we have unwttngly elected to offce, not to menton the compoundng of the rampant degeneracy n Polty wth the addton of these same elected offcals nonelected, but just as nfluental, cohorts and companons, would, of necessty, have just ths effect. We, the undergraduate student body at Stony Brook, have handed a lttle more than $651,2 nto the hands of these corrupted ndvduals, to allocate as they please, and to spend as they lke. Most mmedately, t should be noted that the customcursed polcy of stpendng the Polty presdent and treasurer has returned n full, $1,4, force ths past summer. Ther justfcaton for ths payment (t s not a salary but a stpend, because they put n whatever hours they please), s that the functons they serve and the servces they provde are so essental as to dctate that they receve some renumerary compensaton. But the tangble upshot of ths stuaton was the skyrocketng change n ther percepton of the extent of ther power and the legtmacy of ther use of t. You see, what they dd, last August 6, was "to veto all prevous budgetary legslaton regardng the 798 Polty budget..." and wrte, on that same date, another one that conformed to ther own decsons regardng the best way to spend other people's money. The student councl, the body that has assumed so much power,s not nearly as representatve of the student nterests as s the student senate, the body whch last worked on the budget. ( should add, n the cause of general nterest, that last year's student councl pulled the same despotcal stunt just before graduaton, so magne that ths depravty and concommtant exaggeraton of offcal mportance s the current rage.) n fact, when the student councl voted all ths garbage nto effect, on August 6, t was composed of four pseudodstnct ndvduals: there was Polty Presdent Davd Herzog (you remember hm he's the fellow who collected $1,4 ths summer just to nsure that he'd be able to pull off deals lke ths), and there was Secretary Alan Prce, Junor Representatve Dave Grossman, and Sophomore Representatve Mke Kornfeld. Together they changed the budget the student senate approved. Together they decded how to spend our money, on what, and where. : t s an understatement to assess the crcumstance as beng unfar, because t obvously sn't democratc, and t obvously sn't honest. am not far from the mark when suggest that the people who wll bear the full brunt of ths acton are the students. But, the ultmate problem here has to do wth atttudes. f the presdent of Polty has no compunctons whatever over takng such acton, f he has no compunctons whatever at beng pad to abuse power, and gnore the rghts and values of the students who elected hm nto offce, and who gave hm the power to choose the fools he surrounds hmself wth, f, n short, he feels he can do whatever he pleases, then we are n for a lot of trouble. We had better cut hm off, before he cuts us further. (The wrter s a SUSB undergraduate.) September 12, 1979 STATESMAN Page 9

15 con~~~~~~~~~~~ a m Handcapped Face Ordeal atsusb By Jeffrey w By Jeffrey Lore Don sad hs frst two weeks as a freshman at Stony Brook have been bleak. At frst he sad he was anxous and excted about lfe away from home at college. However, hs optmsm was quckly shattered. Don s a paraplegc and he dscovered that hs cafetera n Roth Quad s naccessble to hm because he uses a wheelchar. He was forced to travel all over the Bology Buldng n search of an elevator key. Then, he was further nconvenenced by not beng able to get nto hs own bathroom. Don s dscoverng that the campus presents an everyday ordeal to ts dsabled students. Though Don s a fctonal representatve of Stony Brook's handcapped communty, hs plght s none too real. Whle walkng around campus, one s mpressed by ts modern buldngs and facltes. Wth ts wealth of greenery and eclectc archtecture, t seems to be a fne campus. However, for the dsabled, Stony Brook falls far short of perfecton; Accordng to Monca Roth, drector of the Offce of the Dsabled, the bulk of the campus s llequpped for dsabled students. "Dsabled students are forced to lve n a 'ghetto' area," she says, "because most of the dorms on campus are naccessble to them." Roth sad she consders Roth Quad a ghetto n the sense that t s the only housng faclty that can accommodate handcapped students. "Stony Brook has untl 198 to meet [Health, Educaton and Welfare] (HEW) requrements for makng the campus accessble to dsabled students. However, they probably wll not meet the deadlne, she asserted. n February, $19, was approprated to Stony Brook to facltate plannng for the handcapped. Roth sad she thnks much more than ths s needed, though. "$19, s a drop n the bucket to accomplsh what needs to be done on campus." Already Allocated Drector of Facltes Operatons Charles Wagner sad that fgure s just for plannng. "n addton to $4, already allocated for curb cuts, sgns, etc., we've got $365, n ths 'year's budget for future work," he explaned. "We had an ndependent organzaton come n and survey all the buldngs," he contnued. "All ther recommendatons wll be consdered for phase three," whch s the next step n the HEW plan. Roth also made other recommendatons. Even the common task of descendng a starway can be a problem for the dsabled. "Dorms over n G and H Quads lack elevators, and n turn are offlmts for dsabled students. Walks, ramps, elevators, etc., stll must be bult to accommodate [dsabled] students." she asserted. Mark Gresser, a senor at Stony Brook who has a wheelchar dsablty presented a dm vew of the campus after four years. "f the Unversty wants to have dsabled students, let t accommodate them properly," he sad. "How can you lve on campus f you cannot get nto the bathroom?" Gresser frowned also upon the snow removal servces n the wnter. "Dsabled students are trapped n ther dorms because there s no snow removal by campus mantenance." 'When frst arrved on campus as a freshman, facltes for the dsabled were nonexstent," sad Gresser. "t wasn't tll complaned to the governor that thngs started to change." However, accordng to Gresser, the changes were slght. Though the Offce of the Dsabled contends that Roth Quad has been desgned to accommodate the dsabled students, Gresser dsagrees. "Roth Quad Cafetera s naccessble to dsabled students. Elevators must stll be bult n many dorms. Dsabled students are beng kept solated because of mproper facltes." Lke the fctonal Don, Peter Steen feels that "lecture halls are naccessble, and fndng someone who has an elevator key s dffcult." Steen, dsabled n a wheelchar, nevertheless feels that faculty and students on campus are mostly cordal to students. "They're always a bg help," he sad. Gershwn Resdence Hall Drector (RHD) Ellen Shannon sad she feels that there s not enough nterest on the part of ableboded students and facultv to helo the dsabled. s n /V n c e n t Actvely nvolved n the problems of the handcapped, she fnds that "socety has solated us from the dsabled, and ableboded people are not equpped to deal wth t." "Compared to other schools, Stony Brook s far behnd n ts facltes for the dsabled," sad Shannon, ctng Wrght State Unversty n Dayton, Oho and Hofstra Unversty n Nassau County as models. "Wrght State s equpped wth a tunnel system and complete physcal educaton for ts dsabled students." Hofstra Unversty n Hempstead s descrbed by Nancy Belowch, drector of the Program of Hgher Educaton of Dsabled Students (PH ED), as beng 1 percent accessble to dsabled students. Snce 1963, Hofstra has been settng up facltes to accommodate and orent the dsabled. These servces nclude complete accessblty to any buldng or dorm faclty on campus. Asde from the physcal characterstcs, though, Hofstra has PHED, whch supples pad staff workers to work as readers, wrters and ades for the dsabled. Specal staffers are also at work n the dorms. Hofstra even has a sports program for handcapped students, ncludng basketball, hockey, Olympcs and a karate team that has won natonal acclam. Accordng to Belowch, Hofstra has spent "mllons of dollars" to accommodate dsabled students durng the past 15 years. Stony Brook, however, s years behnd any such program. As Andy, a blnd Stony Brook student ponts out, even the unoffcal symbol of the Unversty, the Brdge to Nowhere, presents a hazard. "The stars are too wde, and there's no handrals," he sad. Nora Hatzganns, who has partal sght, sad she felt that the campus could be better equpped for students wth sght mparments. "Landmarks around the campus to help blnd students recognze buldngs would be helpful," she sad. She added that students and faculty are helpful toward some students wth vson mparments. "Most professors are really nce and understandng. However, t's the atttude of the person that's really mportant. f you are nce to a professor, he wll'be helpful to you n return. t works both ways." The problem, Mark Gresser concluded, s not wth ndvduals, but wth nsttutons. As a member of such groups as Awareness of Specal Lmtatons and Needs (ASLAN), the Presdent's Advsory Commttee for the Dsabled, and others, he felt powerless. "Nobody lstens to dsabled nterest groups. The people who have the power are not responsve. People n postons to do somethng to help the problem, just don't gve a sht." e e September 12, 1979 STATESMAN/Alternatves Page 3A

16 By Tom Zatorsk From an nformal survey taken at the tme ths artcle was wrtten, t appears that many Stony Brook students dslke Electrc Lght Orchestra, puttng the musc one step ahead of the Partrdge Famly. The most common answer to "What do you thnk of ELO?" was, " try not to/' Those who were more artculate stated that the musc was too dependent on outsde nfluences, especally The Beach Boys and the Beatles. s ths a bad trat to fnd n a group? n ELO's case, perhaps not. The prncple members of the Electrc Lght Orchestra were once part of an Englsh group called the "Move." Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood and Bev Bevan had a concept of dfferent nstrumentaton, other than electrc gutars and drums, n a lve settng. As Roy Wood explaned: "n the early 'Move' days, was a bg fan of the.beatles; especally thngs lke 'Strawberry Felds,' ' Am the Walrus,' and thngs lke By Joe Panholzer "You can never go back." t s a sayng most often appled to old neghborhoods, old grlfrends and n ths case, old rock concerts. For a whle, the Reunon Concert at Parr Meadows Saturday was a noble attempt at assemblng many of the performers from thewoodstock rock festval. t Canned Haat was among the many 9oups to perform Saturday. However, ts a trench horn player, and not have to usefrst tour as the newly formed ELO was far Woodstock : Pttempted Reunon fell far &hort, however, of beng the reenactment of the 1969 concert for whch many of the 18. persons attendng had hoped. Blled as "One day to remember... three days of peace and musc," the 1 hour concert ncluded such famlar names as Canned Heat, Johnny Wnter, Paul Butterfeld. Stephen Stlts and a p u n k e d o u t J o r m a Kaukonen, all performng before an acd washed crowd. As the gates opened, the atmosphere of the crowd was enthusastc, the pot was passng and the luders were ludng. Cres of "Woodstock, Woodstock," broke out as Canned Heat opened the show. However, the combnaton of excessvely long ntermssons as well as tprhnra dffr ltoc nrq^oh/ changed the mood of the crowd from exctement to apathy. At one pont, the crowd was almost totally slent, to the extent where Country Joe McDonald responded, "You're not makng any nose at all... can't hear anythng." The crowd was somewhat revved when Stephen Stlls sans Crosby, Nash and Young performed the song "Woodstock." But Stlls' appearance was not enough for what the crowd wanted. Because, after all, what t wanted was the past tself. "The mood and warmth of the orgnal Woodstock can never be recaptured," sad concert worker Laura Better. "Ths concert was too planned, too organzed; t tacked the spontanety of the real thng." Pagans Chanted One part of the audence whch mght have dsagreed wth Better's comments were the Pagans, a motorcycle club, well admred by the people n ths area. Formng a small group next to the stage, they chanted and cheered throughout the concert. At one pont one of the partcularly enthusastc members leaped nude onto the from successful des to the frst album The dea of lve settng becanr te a receptve response No Answer, released n a strng orchestra n a > almost ludcrous as audences watched) the band members entangle themselves) n the endless footage of mcrophone cabt^ that was necessary to amp fy the acoustd nstruments. * Soon afterwards/roy Wood left ELO to form "Wzard/' and that left Jeff Lynne to head the group. As producer and composer of all ELO's materal, hs muscalty domnates n the studo; however, on stage no one personalty s evdent, and the band operates as a cohesve whole. t was at about that tme that the group began to employ the newly developed Barcus Berry transducer pckup. Ths steamlned the producton of ts concerts, makng them far more successful. The frst successful sngle was "Roll Over Beethoven," a remake of the Chuck Berry ht. The followng albums showed a heavy expermentaton n ths area wthout a great commercal success untl Face the Musc, released n Two top 4 sngles came from ths album, "Evl Woman," and "Strange Magc." Wth these two hts, ELO establshed ts dstnctve sound, one that has frm roots n the nnovators of rock and roll's past, combned wth a fresh sound due to a shft n nstrumentaton. The three albums that followed. Face the Musc, A New World Record and Out of the Blue, carred ths dea to ts lmt. Wth each successve recordng the orchestratons became more lush and ther nfluences more pronounced. However, whle ts materal mght not have been the most nspred, the studo technques were brllant. More lkely, there are some graduate students who remember hm from hs folk days n the 6s and some older sblngs who were fans of hs, snce Andersen has always had a szeable followng n the New York metropoltan area. Therefore, t would have been surprsng that he and hs band played to such a small audence at My Father's Place late n August, were t not for the fact that he was fllng n because of a last mnute cancellaton and there was not much lead tme to advertse the change. Ths was unfortunate, because for nearly two hours, the Andersen Band played enthusastcally and competently. Ths may not sound lke anythng very mportant at frst, but when one keeps n mnd the sze of the audence and the fact that Andersen's publc performances have occasonally been dsappontng n the last few years, t's more than enough reason to look up and take notce. Andersen was ntroduced to the New York Cty folk scene by Tom Paxton n Robert Shelton, the New York Tmes crtc who was so nstrumental n Bob Dylan's early recognton, prased Andersen's work and spoke of hs "beautful, vbratothck, lght bartone." Several albums followed and Andersen acqured numerous devoted fans. For the past few years, however, he had not been wrtng much new materal and had come to rely on ncreasngly dated materal and the works of other songwrters. Thus, Tuesday nght's performance contaned largely ballads and country/rock numbers and some updated arrangements of older tunes of hs. n addton, though, some new compostons were unveled, and Andersen spoke proudly of gettng back to wrtng agan. produce strng effects; nstead. ELO has apparently found that commercal success has lttle to do wth hstorcally retrospectve musc, and that's really a shame. Rchard Wald Blue Oyster Cult (Columba) Mrrors Blue Oyster Cult's musc has gone through many changes over the years. ts second album, Tyranny and Mutaton, was a hard rock, almost punk album. ts musc changed from "occult rock," to heavy metal, and fnally to conventonal rockandroll. Ths change was so drastc, that on ts last album Spectres, one couldn't really tell t was the Cult playng. ts latest album, Mrrors s a step backward and because of that, an mprovement. However, the album s very schzophrenc each track seems to f t nto a dfferent category of musc. The ttle track, "Mrrors," s a throwback to the type of musc on the Cult's hghly successful Agent of Fortune album wth a catchy tune that doesn't come across as wrtten expressly for arplay. However, "Dr. Musc," "You're not the One" and "n Thee," are so blatantly wrtten for the express reason of gettng arplay that they hurt the album. True arplay sells albums, but n the case of these songs, the Cult seems to have sold out artstc ntegrty for commercalty. There are, however, songs on the album that are outstandng. Lead gutarst Don Roeser's "The Vgl" and the aforementoned "Mrrors" are wrtten n the same ven as hs "(Don't Fear) the Reaper." Keyboardgutarst Allen Laner's "Lonely.Teardrops" s a defnte ht wthout beng blatant about t, and bassst Joe Bouchard's " Am the Storm" s an atavsm to the Cult's "occultsh" musc on ts Secret Treates album. L 1%...And Mean t! (2th Century Fox) Genya Ravan Ths s a rather curous record that successfully recreates the New York sound of the mddle 6s, a muscal culture that Genya Ravan was very much a part of. She has toured wth the Stones, the Anmals, Steppenwolf, and a host of other bands n addton to headng several bands of her own. Her last effort, Urban Desre, was regonally successful wth a sngle on the Top 4 charts. Her latest release shows the promse of beng a greater success. t s a record of hgh power rock and roll whose energy does not let up for the duraton of the album. She has the vocal power to carry the tunes and the expressveness to accentuate the fne lyrcs. t s extraordnary how the sprt of such groups as the Shrelles and the Holles can be recreated wthout an outrght plagarsm. Apparently Genya Ravan has complete command of the genre n whch she s workng. A prme example s "Steve," a song that has al the elements of a New York ht of 1965, done wth a fant trace of sarcastc dsdan an ndcaton of an artst who 's panfully aware of the roots of her ntal success. The remander of the album shows a unform hgh ntensty, so much so that no one track stands above the rest. Ths could be a... Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, Jesse Col n Young, Tom Paxton, Hoyt Axton and Arlo Guthre head a lst that could be consdered a Who's Who of musc n ths genre. One of the hghlghts of the album s the fullboded sound reproducton whch certanly does justce to many of these low key performers. The problem, however, wth these varety albums s that a contnuty and d evelopment of materal among artsts s lost. Of notable achevements on ths uneven album s the house band consstng of Jm Rothermel, Rchard Greene, Peter Welker and Davd Lndley. They provde the concert wth both soul and c sstency a feat that may only be accomplshed by exemplary and versatle performers. so sponw Flyng Colors (MCA) Troopers Here s a mddle of the road hard rock album wth clever rffs and memorable melodes. The heavy electrc sound would put ths record along sde the 1 other clever hard rock albums, but what really saves t s the lyrcs. They are really funny! Wth a refreshng bluntness they take a comcal look at the day to day socal scene of the 7s. "3 Dressed Up As a 9," the frst cut, sets the tone for the rest of the album, makng use of the old hgh school ratng system for ratng grls. "Good Clean Fun" s chock full of memorable lnes: "My doctor told me to call you but couldn't get through/ you see 've got a lttle somethng and the other nght gave t to you." Because the lyrcs are worth lstenng to, the musc can't help but be notced. Trooper handles ther dom very well, keepng everythng short and sweet, constantly ntroducng new materal, and never leavng room for the redundancy that often characterzes ths style. As far as a dstnctve sound s concerned, t's too early n Trooper's career to have developed one. At ths pont the nfluence of Boston s stll evdent, but f Trooper contnues on ts present course, t wll have great potental for commercal success. Tom Zatorsk... Recorded on locaton n the Brtsh West ndles, t calls to mnd Amerca's Harbor album (that one was recorded n Hawa), and the results are depressngly smlar. f ths album ndcates the success of hs vacaton, 'm sorry he had such a lousy trp. As can be expected, every song has to do wth the sunny Carbbean sles, and 'm stll wonderng how beautful sun drenched beaches can be that borng. Track after track drags wth the same luke warm melodes, nonsense lyrcs and tred arrangements untl the lstener s lulled nto what feels lke a heat nduced stupor. Maybe that's the programmatc ntent of the record. f one had to state a postve aspect of the album (and that s a formdable task) t would have to be the otherwse excellent studo personnel that make an appearance on the record. They nclude Russ Kunkle, James Taylor and Keth Sykes, but t seems that the heat got to them too, for they dd nothng to salvage the faded materal Buffett provded. The only song that manages to rse a few nches above the vertable tdal wave of medocrty s "Chanson Pour Les Petts Enfants" due only to a really crsp pano and recorder duet. 23 Sta tesman / L 9 S PO RTS l NL MMREP Kckng Off for an ntense Season ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. m By GERALD WEN The Patrots are ready to tear nto a tough season ths year, and openng kckoff at home Saturday afternoon at 1:3 PM aganst Marst College s just the begnnng. Comng off a losng season (17), Head Coach Fred Kemp sad thngs are changng and looks forwards to a "brght future." Wth. top notch coachng and some key starters returnng, Kemp sad there s only one more thng he s lookng for. "Fan support s mportant for the players. Student support produces a wnnng team," he asserted. Marst s the frst n a long lne of formdable opponents for the Pats. The team wll play aganst Dvson Ramapo and Dvson Fort Lauderdale. He sad that the team s ready for anyone, but that the Pats are at a dsadvantage. "'These schools gve scholarshps and fnancal ads [to outstandng hgh school athletes and draft themj whch we can't do n Stony Brook," asserted Kemp addng, "But we wll assume we are playng wth student athletes and do the best we can." From what he has seen ths year, Kemp sad thngs look good for the Pats. "We thought we dd very well n the scrmmage" last week aganst the Polce Athletc League of Levttown. He ponts out, however, that the opposton was By VVENNE HESTON "Let's face t, ths s unusual... 'd be a damn fool f ddn't realze t. But searched my soul and asked f could deny ths person the opportunty to play basketball, " sad Bobby Leonard, coach of the ndana Pacers about draft choce Ann Meyers. At 5'9" and 135 pounds, she s the frst woman to ever hold an X Couentry: Sprntng to the Top By GLENN BLANCO The cross country team s sprntng off nto a new season Saturday and Coach George Robnson sad he has hgh hopes that t wll surprse a lot of people n ther conference ths year. More Compettve As s true wth most sports clubs at Stony Brook, the cross country team has had a number of dsappontng seasons"'we had a tough season last year," Robnson admtted, "because, we had many atttude problems, and, on the whole, performed rather poorly." But, the start of a new season may make a dfference. "We have twce as many rvnners as last year so we are much more representatve and compettve," Robnson sad. "f a group can run together HARD HTTNG ACTON JS what the football team ntends to provde ts oppents wth ths mson. weak. Perhaps ths s because the Patrots practce fve tmes a week and have sx coaches, compared to the other team wth three coaches and less practce. Kemp sad he used the scrmmage to better the team. "t was good experence. We got to see everyone out there play," he explaned, addng that n a game only the starters usually stay n. "n scrmmage, we try to look at everybody and evaulate them." NBA contract. Sam Nass, the ndana Pacers' new owner has sgned a $5, contract wth her. The sum s guaranteed whether she makes the team or not. Nass, known for hs promotonal flar wants to fll seats ths season. Last year, Pacers' game attendance was very low. Ann Meyers mght brng the crowds back. Serous Player " am not a publcty stunt," then we'll do very well and rght now have at least sx good runners who can do the job. We have never been n that poston before." Wth experenced runners from last season and surprsng new talent, ths year's squad seems to have good balance. "There are such great runners comng up," he added, "that t's hard to pnpont our best ones. Some of our young runners may even surpass our junors and senors." Not only the coach, but several players sense good tmes are on the way. " thnk ths year's team s stronger than the teams we've had the last few years," sad one of last year's star runners, John Devtt. "'m lookng forward to a better season. We are hopng to keep thngs more organzed n terms of workng out wth each other asserted the 24yearold four tme AllAmercan guard at a press conference n Los Angeles. Meyers s serous and her record s mpressve. Durng her four years at UCLA she averaged 17.4 ponts per game. She played on the Olympc team n 1976, she's played aganst such basketball greats as Julus Ervng, Marcus Johnson, Calvn Murphy, Mychal Thompson and bg brother Dave Meyers, forward wth durng the week." Even the new members sad the team s lookng good. "From what see we have pretty good guys, very good depth and we are not gong to get wped out," asserted sophomore Rchard Guzman, who just joned the squad. Wth a frm belef that the team s gong to excel ths year, Robnson sad he ntends to travel more to look for more competton. Searchng Whle Robnson sad he s searchng for competton, he added that not every stone s unturned n Stony Brook. "There are not enough talented and experenced runners gong out for the team. We need these people to come out and know they're floatng around campus somewhere." 1% o There are some outstandng returnng players and rookes wth good potental ths year too, he added. Kemp sad' all the coaches have at least played college football, and one was head coach for a hgh school team. Kemp has been wth the team snce 1973 and won the coach of the year award. But wth the accolades and experence, Kemp sad he s not lookng to the past for an answer, but looks to the future. Woman Ho opster Drafted nto NB1 the Mlwaukee Bucks. Students and coaches at Stony Brook are skeptcal of her chances of makng the "11man" roster but all express enthusasm about the opportunty to try. Women's Basketball Coach Sandy Weeden sad, " don't thnk she'll cut t. The sport s too physcally demandng; Ann Meyers doesn't have the strength or aglty that the guys do." Barbara Bschoff, a player on the women's team sad, "... the guys are frggn' bg... Of course thnk she should have a chance at t." Janet Travs, voted Statesman's Athlete of the Year three years n a row sad, "n basketball, women should play wth and aganst women, unless she's sx foot fve and weghs 3 pounds, she's got one chance n a mllon of makng the team. Women's Pro Basketball needs Ann Meyers much more than Men's Basketball does." Coach Rchard Kendall thnks that t s a publcty stunt. "Ann Meyers couldn't have made the men's team at UCLA how could she possbly qualfy for the Pacers? She wouldn't be able to compete wth our men's team here at Stony Brook. She's not quck, bg, or strong enough for the knd of physcal demands that men'sproball would make... Basketball s a busness. They'll use her for a few exhbton games, possbly keep her as the 11th player and f not she'll be n the front offce stll earnng $5,." Page 16 STA.SMAN September 12, 1979
