Do Sprng Flng planners want student nput? Or do they just want to conceal t? You may have notced the cute advertsements around campus formond rng Flng forum, where many students hoped to voce ther concerns about the Unversty's annual mega-party. The ad featured a cartoon, wth people n four dfferent cartoon panels en thusastcally talkng about a fctonal Flng. "Last year's Sprng Flng was the best weekend of the year!" effuses one cartoon character. "The musc was awesome!" says another. "The events appealed to dverse groups!" exclams- a thrd, and "I thought the T-shrt desgn was great!" says the fourth. The cartoon was followed by ths kcker: "If you feel any or all of these statements are naccurate, please share your vews wth the 993 Flng Drectors..." It then lsted the date, tme and place of the Monday evenng meetng n Vance Hall. Of course, t would be wonderful f students on campus echoed the sentments of the cartoon characters after ths year's Sprng Flng. We're also glad students attended the meetng to help brng that about. But we can't help but wonder whether the advertsement for the forum actually drove some students away. On the surface, the ad appeared to encourage student attendance at the forum. Flng planners also publczed the event for the entre week leadng up to the event. But the text of the ad probably should have read, "Come to the meetng and help Flng planners make these statements a realty." By reducng crtcsms of Flng to four cartoon frames, t would appear that Flng planners already thnk they know all the reasons why people crtcze Flng. And by reducng each "reverse crtcsm" to a mere sentence, students may have felt ther concerns were beng trvalzed. For example, t's not just that people may not lke the T-shrt desgn. It's also that SPEC seems to abuse ts power to quash the sale of alternatve T-shrts It's not just whether the events appealed to dverse groups. It's whether dverse groups were ncorporated nto the hgher-level decson makng, regardless of whch students are n charge of Flng. But two other thngs are apparent about the ad Frst, t sad nothng about whether the Flng drectors were actually nterested n student nput. And second, t also neglected to say whether Flng drectors were wllng to mprove plannng to accommodate crtcs' concerns. The way the ad read, the Flng drec- HARV MATTHEW SELMAN. 34TH STREET EDITOR MARGARET KANE. C > I ARIIACOVINI. Co JEFFREY HUROK. 7 Councl to consder commttee changes By SCOTT CALVERT 3aty Penntytvanan Staff Wrter Unversty Councl members wll dscuss proposed revsons to the Councl Commttee on Undergraduate Admssons and Fnancal Ad at today's Councl meetng, attemptng to prevent overlap wth a smlar commttee overseen by the provost's offce. The proposed revsons would expand the reach of the Councl commttee to nclude the Unversty's graduate schools. As currently charged, the commttee can only consder admssons and fnancal ad matters for the four undergraduate schools. Socal Work Professor Louse Shoemaker, past charperson of the Faculty Senate, sad last nght that the revsons, f ultmately approved, mght reduce the commttee's overlap wth the Provost's Commttee on Undergraduate Admssons. That commttee, establshed by the provost several years ago, has greater mpact on Unversty polcy than the Councl commttee because Councl s only an advsory body to Presdent Sheldon Hackney and cannot mplement polcy. The provost's commttee also ncludes representatves of the four undergraduate schools, whle the Councl commttee currently conssts of nne professors, one admnstrator, four undergraduates and one graduate student. At last December's Councl meetng, faculty and admnstrators proposed abolshng the Councl commttee. But at the January meetng, Councl Steerng Commttee members decded to look nto changng ts functons as an alterna- tve to abolton. The staunchest opposton to phasng out the commttee came from undergraduate and graduate students on Councl, who argued at the tme that the move would decrease ther voce n the admssons process. Shoemaker sad last nght she s "a lttle ambvalent" on the ssue. She sad that whle the commttee has drawn attenton to "mportant ssues" lke need-blnd admssons, the tme and energy of ts members could probably be used "n more productve ways." She sad she s "not sure what's gong to happen [wth the commttee]," addng that Councl has dscussed changng or abolshng the commttee for several years now wthout takng any acton. At todays meetng Councl members wll also hear a presentaton from Steven Murray, the Unversty's vce presdent for busness servces, on the Unverst/s recent changes to Escort Servce. Murray sad yesterday that he would present "a ten-mnute overvew" of the changes, after whch Councl members wll have an opportunty to ask questons and make comments. The meetng wll also nclude a presentaton from Shoemaker on the 20th annversary of a College Hall st-n that led to the creaton of the Women's Center and the Women's Studes Program. Shoemaker sad she "wants people to understand that t s the 20th year snce then and we've come a ways, but not terrbly far," n addressng women's ssues on campus The meetng wll be held at 4 p.m n Hoover Lounge n Vance Hall and s open to the publc. 11 -day. October 4, 992 The Dalv Pennsylvana!! Page By DAN FELDMAN Daly Pannaytvanan Sports Wrter We here at Ivy Roundup do not take sdes when t comes to the mpendng presdental electon. But George Bush sucks. Gotta hand t to the soon-to-beunemployed prez, however he dd choose to attend Yale solely for the purpose of watchng those heroes of the grdron battle t out to acheve Roundup fame. Not to slght the good 'ole guvner He was a member of the Omnscent Octagon as well. Here s an dea. Let's take each of the canddates, put hm behnd the lnes of hs own Ivy squad, and the frst to score as many touchdowns as the natonal debt wll be gven the all-mportant Roundup endorsement. Enough poltcs Our collectve heads are about to explode. It's tme to run naked through the ranks of the Ancent Eght, lookng for stores that are ft to prnt. What we found of course was that Brown stll sucks, but that Harvard has joned them We wtnessed the fall of a mghty juggernaut, and possbly the emergence of another. Fnally, we here at Roundup were lucky enough to wtness the begnnngs of a new famly at the Yale Bowl, and the possble start of another one rght here at Penn. All n a day's work. Brown Sucks Statstc of the Week We here at Roundup are the frst to admt that we have been qute a bt harsh on the Brown Bears over the years. But that doesn't mean that they don't deserve t. Bush, Brown, Bll, Bg Green and Ball&Chans They suck. No, really, they suck. We mean t. Take last weekend's 28-4 loss at Prnceton, for example. The Bears, known far and wde for havng one of the worst defenses n modern hstory, only surrendered 28 ponts to the Tgers, and held Prnceton stud. Woundup quote Well Gard sucks, so at halftme of the Prnceton game. Brown coach Mckey Kwatkowsk opted not to put n fourth-strnger Trevor Yankoff (once agan, what do you thnk?), nstead gong for defensve back Scott Camp Camp was mpressve, (for Brown, that s) gong 6 of 8 for 62 yards n the second half. Bll Prnas and Trrvor Yankoff a.k.a. The Fab Phallcs. machne Keth Elas to a measly 39 yards. What happened - ' "Our defense played well, and that was really knd of strange." our colleagues at the Brown Daly Herald sad. Besdes ther stellar defensve showng, the Bears may now have a quarterback controversy as well Comng nto the season, senor Jeff Barrett was a shoe-n as the startng sgnal-caller. But he qut the team, leavng the door open for senor Bll Penas (what do you thnk?). But Penas was njured aganst Wllam & Mary (offensve lne dd not provde protecton), so he gave way to senor Davd Gard Why not Yankoff? (At quarterback, that s.) Who knows, but the Brown Stadum PA announcer must have fun wth those names. We do Quck-strke of the Week We all know that Brown sucks. And, of course, Columba sucks. But Harvard'' The No.l school n the US News c World Report respected rankngs? The school that accepted Elzabeth Shue*" They are awesome, rght? We here at Roundup beg to dffer They suck. The Crmson's 3-3 loss aganst Cornell made our decson easy to make Look at the stats The Bg Red scored four touchdowns and one feld goal on the day, so they had fve scorng drves, rght? Can you beleve that the longest scorng drve of the game for Cornell was :24 Thanks to the Harvard offense's total nepttude, Bg Red QB Bll Lazor was able to lead the Bg Red on scorng drves of 0 seconds. :24, 04, 6. and 5 seconds. Wow. "(Harvard] puts a lot of people up on the lne and the nature of ther defense s to gve up bg plays." Lazor sad Boy, what a great defensve strategy Stop em short but gve up the Hal Mary. Brllant. Cornell consstently acheved good feld poston thanks to a bgtme case of butterfngers by Harvard's fnest (read: they couldn't catch a cold f thev wanted to). The only tme Cornell had poor feld poston (.e.. n ts own half of the feld), senor runnng back Scott Olaro rumbled 53 yards for the fnal Cornell score of the game. "Our defense has been dong a great job of takng the ball away." Lazor sad. "I thnk that we're ranked somewhere n the naton n takeaway ratos " Well, Bll, I'm sure that you're ranked somewhere n the naton But we here at Roundup won't hold that aganst your Lazor-fast offense. Fallen Dynasty of the Week Remember Holy Cross? The team that pummelled Penn last year n Worcester, 45-0? The team ranked No 3 n Dvson I-AA last season wth a perfect l-o record? The bg, bad Crusaders used to strke fear n the hearts of each Ivy League foe. They once sported a 22-game wnnng streak aganst the Ancent Eght that even led to us here at Roundup tppng our hats to them But, lo and behold 992 came at Holy Cross, and no other game can typfy the Crusaders' demse more than ther 48-0 whtewashng at the hands of Dartmouth (whch happens to be more lopsded than a certan 45-0 result n 99) The Bg Green outganed Holy Cross, n total offensve yards. They held the ball 5 mnutes more than the Crusaders, showng well-balanced domnaton on both the ground and n the ar Of course, n talkng about Dartmouth's ar attack, we here at Roundup must pay homage to QB Jay Fedler He scorched the Crusader secondary for 307 yards on 23 of 34 passng and two TDs. 14 IHMLWLH Sports Page 4 The Daly Pennsylvanan Wednesday, October 4,992 MARC BLUMBERG OP Stall Photographer Penn sophomore forward Mandy Kauftman <whte) battles for the ball wth a par of Temple Owls last nght. The Quakers lost, -0, at Frankln Feld. F. Hockey loses on questonable call By MATTHEW REISER Daly Pennsylvanan Sports Wrter If Frankln Feld had Quaker Vson and NCAA feld hockey had the nstant replay rule, Penn's -0 loss to Temple last nght may have been a te. Wth 7:75 left n the second half and Penn tralng -0, Quaker sophomore Amy Pne tore down the rght sdelne, dshng the ball nto the center and onto junor Fran Magure's stck. Magure then passed t to senor Karen Saah, who apparently netted the tyng goal. But the referee had called a foul aganst Temple pror to Saah's shot, vodng the goal and awardng the Quakers an neffectve penalty corner. After the game, the same offcal apologzed to Penn coach Anne Sage for her whstle. "When you have an opportunty to score. I hate to have the offcal make a bad call," Sage sad. "She came up to me and told me she lost the ball n the lghts. She gave us a penalty coner, but I would have rather had the goal." "The referee must have thought that by callng the foul t would be to our advantage," sophomore back Lly Ma sad. "She could have let the ball stay n play and we would have scored. I feel a lttle cheated, but what can you do? You can only hope that the refs call a far game." Puttng ths one play asde, the Quaker offense was vrtually nonexstent. Penn (6-3-) had only three shots at goal all nght as opposed to the Owls' 6. In fact Penn ddn't get off a shot for the frst 22 mnutes of the game. And one penalty corner s clearly a sgn of a shaky offensve threat. The most acton seen by Temple's goale Donna Porter was her warmup drlls durng halftme. A random fan called out, "Let's go Penn, get aggressve." But the Quakers' attack was stfled by Temple's quckness to the ball. t s so mportant to create scorng opportuntes; t's a premum," Sage sad. "We need help from the mdfelders as well as the forwards." "We're not attackng strong enough as a whole team," Penn assstant coach Val Cloud sad. "We W. Soccer hopes to mantan hgh Quakers travel to Prnceton By ANDY MERAN Dary Pennsylvanan Sports Wrter As the Penn women's soccer team comes off the hgh of domnatng Towson State 3- on Sunday, the Quakers must mantan the same level of emoton and ntensty f they hope to come away vctorous when they travel to Prnceton tonght (7:30 p.m.). Whle Penn (0-3 Ivy League, 3-6 overall) was clearly better than Towson State, there s no doubt that the Quakers wll be tested aganst the Tgers (0-3, 2-5), who match up farly evenly wth Penn. Once agan, the keys for Penn wll be ts ablty to apply consstent offensve pressure, to create numerous scorng chances and to captalze on them. "Prnceton wll play very smlar to the way we do," Penn coach Suzette Wolf sad. "They'll be movng the ball really well." The Tgers, who have won two of ther last three games after a slow start, are paced by senor mdfelder Rebecca Goodwn, who leads the team n scorng wth two goals and two asssts. Sophomore forward Sue Reece (two goals) s also an offensve weapon, whle senor Km Douglas has posted a 2.43 goals aganst average n the net. Lke the Quakers, Prnceton has had to struggle to score ths season. The Tger attack was dealt a severe blow when they lost the experence of senor forward Danelle Ryan, who s out ndefntely wth a severe knee njury. Ryan had one goal and one assst n less than two games before she went down. t Penn wll h Ae to carry over the energy and exctement of the Towson State wn nto tonght's game. More mportantly, the Quakers hope to be able to show the Tgers the same knd of offensve pressure and consstency they demonstrated aganst Towson State. "We have a feel for what t's lke to wn now," Penn assstant coach Bll Mller sad "We took lots of shots last week so hopefully, we'll shoot more aganst Prnceton." The Tgers defeated the Quakers 3- last year, but Penn goalkeeper Debbe Goldklang feels the rat h- mproved Quakers have the opportunty to come out of Prnceton w th a vctory. "We can up our game and play wth them," Goldklang sad. "If we wn [tonght], t could set the course for the rest of the season." Whle assumng a leadershp role on the youthful Quakers, Goldklang has also managed to mproved her play n the net consstently. "Deb's playng great," Wolf sad. "She's very secure. She has changed 00 percent from the start of the season untl now." Asde from the experenced Goldklang, the Penn freshmen have been contrbutng greatly to the team. Wolf feels they are the core of the squad, and f they can play aganst Prnceton as well as they played aganst Towson State, then the Quakers should have a chance to clam ther frst Ivy League wn. "Because we won [Sunday], I thnk we have a lttle bt of confdence n our game agan," freshman mdfelder Tonya Kolodzejsk sad. ' When you have an opportunty to score, I hate to have the offcal make a bad call. She came up to me and told me she lost the ball n the lghts. She gave us a penalty corner, but I would have rather had the goal.' Anne Sage Penn feld hockey coach tend to watch the person who gets the ball on the attack nstead of havng everyone move up together." Unfortunately for the Quakers, ths s exactly what the No. 4 Owls (8-5) dd n ther attack. Whenever a ball would pop nto mdfeld, a swarm of cherry red-clad players would pounce on the ball and whack t towards the cage. Wth ths 'Bg Ball' game of knockng the ball nto the offensve regon whenever possble. Temple was able to tre the Penn defensve unt. Despte 0 saves by Quaker sophomore goale Suzy Pures. Templerelentlessly rushed the net and eventually found ts effort rewarded. Wth just 57 seconds remanng n the frst half, Owl junor Debbe Utz found an open space about 0 yards loft of the goal. She drbbled for a quck moment and shot, httng the goal post. The ball bounced back to her stck and she lfted t over the rght shoulder of Pures for the only goal of the nght. Penn's defense beefed up n the second half, allowng only one penalty corner, as opposed to fve n the frst half. But the defense alone could not te up the game. The transton game for the Quakers seemed to dsappear as Penn JEFFREY HUROK.DP Senor Photographer Quaker freshman Dane Irvng (3) fghts for the ball vs Temple. began to clear the ball from the defensve zone wth huge swngs that ddn't stay on the mdfelders stcks but nstead wound up pushed back nto the Temple attack. "We need to use each other nstead of tryng to drbble past opponents," senor co-captan Jen Oschell sad. "We weren't passng the ball effectvely. We would receve, drbble, try to pass upfeld and they'd get t and smack t rght back." "It seemed lke we were panckng and unloadng the ball." Ma sad. "We were stll tryng to play our own game wth the small ball and sldng t sde to sde. But no matter how fast our passes were, they were beatng us to the ball." Although Temple dd ndeed have more shots on goal, the ^al reason the Owls came out vctorous was because of ther aggressve surge toward the ball n the open feld. Many tmes, Penn would appear to be on the verge of attack and then a Please see REFEREE, page Offense doesn f t show up By ADAM STEINMETZ Daly Pennsylvanan Sports Wrter Temple feld hockey goale Donna Porter had to keep busy somehow last nght, so durng the fve-mnute halftme, she dd her warmup drlls. Porter needed ths opportunty to lmber up, for the Penn offense dd not force her to move often durng Temple's -0 wn. Despte the close score, last nght's game was a laugher. Thanks to Penn's nablty to generate offense, t was the Owls who were do- On the Sdelnes ng the hootng. The Owls outshot Penn 6-3. and held the Quakers, who averaged over sx penalty corners a game enterng the contest, to just one. So what happened to the offense? The prmary problem was the forwards and mdfelders were forced to come back and help out on defense. Had the ball been 8 years of age t could have regstered to vote n the Penn defensve end, for t was a permanent resdent. Whle Temple reles on a strategy of dumpng the ball down the feld and chasng after t, Penn s us"ally able to execute short, quck passes to move the ball out of ts end and up the feld. Last nght, however. Temple's mdfelders beat the Quakers to these passes. "It seemed lke we were holdng onto the ball a lttle too long," sophomore back Lly Ma sad. "It seemed lke we were panckng and just unloadng the ball." Temple was the aggressor, as the Owl backs and mdfelders came forward to support the offense. When the Penn defense stopped the ntal Temple thrust, the Owl mdfelders swooped forward to ntercept the clearng pass. "A lot of tmes the Temple players moved to the ball faster than us," Ma sad. "When we made the pas we ddn't seem to have the ntensty to go for the ball and make somethng happen." "Once the ball would be cleared, [Temple] would move to the ball and then they would all go and attack," Penn assstant coach Val Cloud sad. Temple's speed allowed t to recover and not allow breakaways on the few occasons Penn was able to get the ball out of ts own end. The Quaker forwards and mdfelder Amy Pne were left to do the attackng, wth very lttle support from the defense. The defense stayed back perhaps fearng Temple's speed. "We have a tendency to watch the Please see OFFENSE, page W. Tenns looks to buld on 5- record By JED WALENT4S Daly Pennsylvanan Sports Wrter The Penn women's tenns team s lookng forward to buldng on ts 5- record ths afternoon when t takes on Temple at 2 p.m. on the Lott Tenns Courts. Although the Quakers have had to fght off a rash of njures, the pressure of mdterms and ther exhaustng schedule, they are contnung to play good tenns and are upbeat about ths afternoon's match, especally consderng last year's 8- whtewashng of the Owls. Ths s only Penn's second home match, and the Quakers have spent ther last three weekends on the road. "It's always ncer to play at home," freshman Beth Brady sad, "especally snce we've been travellng so much lately." Sophomore No. Barre Bernsten, who has been battlng panful shr, splnts, wll lead Penn aganst the Owls' Chrstna Antono Govann, who defeated Bernsten last season. "Last year, t was probably my most upsettng loss, because t was a match that I felt I should have won," Bernsten sad. "My goal for [today's] match s to avenge last year's loss." No. 2 Monca Goldberg, the Quakers' senor captan, wll be back In acton after mssng last week's Penn State match. She wll take on Trsh Antono Govann, Chrstna's sster. Goldberg and Brady wll also be lookng to contnue ther undefeated season at the thrd doubles spot. Junor Leanne Mos wll play at No. 3 for Penn. Mos has been one of the Quakers' most consstent performers throughout the season and s comng off great wns over Harvard and Penn State, respectvely. Freshman No. 4 Preety Soratha, sufferng from tendonts s her left wrst, has been masterng her onehanded backhand durng practce and s lookng forward to utlzng t n a match stuaton. Soratha and Bernsten wll comprse the Quaker's No. doubles team are expected to take on the Govann ssters. Junor Suejn Km wll play n the No. 5 spot and team wth Mos at second doubles. LeBow has seen dramatc mprovement n her game over the last few weeks of practce, and s playng wth consderably more confdence. "We cannot afford to take anyone lghtly,' Penn coach Csse Leary sad. "The kds have played super tenns I have been really pleased wth the way everyone's played. I do not expect a letup. The grls have been workng really hard, but you've always got to come out ready to play. You have to be mentally focused."
