2 1. Cde f Cnduct Welcme t the 2018 Greenville High Schl Marching Band! In rder fr ur band/bandfrnt t meet high musical and marching standards, the cperatin f everyne is essential. Our expectatins fr all band/bandfrnt members are t fllw the rules, cperate, and shw respect t everyne invlved in the prgram. As always, we expect ur students t put the highest quality perfrmance n the field in every aspect. As a reminder, here is the Greenville High Schl Band/Bandfrnt Cde f Cnduct Band/Bandfrnt respnsibilities: Attend all perfrmances and rehearsals the schedule is attached. Fr any absence, ntify the directr AND the apprpriate advisr ASAP thrughut the seasn Fr any and all absences, students must fill ut a yellw Band Excuse Frm n later than 1 week befre the absence is t ccur any later and it will be unexcused Be prepared fr and n time t every perfrmance and rehearsal. Shw respect t all band members, band bsters, band staff and the band directr at all times. This als extends t shwing respect fr the facilities, equipment and unifrms (including prper cleaning care and hanging). Fllw all schl rules utlined in the Greenville student handbk. Have prper music, equipment, and/r instrument at all apprpriate rehearsals and perfrmances. Cperate fully with the directrs, chapernes, and student leaders. Fllw all plicies fund in the Greenville Student Handbk. Band/Bandfrnt members wh d nt fllw the Cde f Cnduct will: 1. Have privileges revked; this includes 3 rd quarter break 1, leadership pprtunities, sls/features, etc. 2. After a student lses their 3 rd quarter break fr the secnd time (after a Cde f Cnduct vilatin), the student will be benched fr perfrmances fr any further vilatins f the Cde f Cnduct attendance and dressing in unifrm still required (als benched 3 rd Quarter) At this pint, parents will be ntified f the issues resulting in benching 3. After a student is benched twice, the student may be remved frm the grup fr the remainder f the seasn after a discussin with the student, parents and advisr(s). If fr sme reasn a band/bandfrnt member is sent hme frm band camp r anther band activity due t excessively pr behavir, it may lead t a permanent remval frm the grup A student will be immediately expelled frm the band/bandfrnt fr tbacc, alchl, r drug use prir t r during any band functin; likewise, the student will be turned int the schl administratin fr disciplinary measures thrugh the schl **All cnsequences are at the final discretin f the directr** and will be reflective f any cnflicts with this Cde f Cnduct 1 Student is allwed t have anther student buy them fd. They are als allwed t use the restrm whenever they need t, with permissin frm their advisr. Barring any extenuating circumstances (ie. Medical, family, etc.) the student shuld nt leave the stands when they are benched. Students are als nt allwed t have visitrs (ie. Nn-band members) in the stands while their 3 rd Quarter privileges are revked. 1

3 2. Attendance Plicy General Infrmatin: Attached yu will find the band schedule fr the entire seasn. Students need t make arrangements NOW fr everything listed n this schedule. Attendance WILL be taken at all rehearsals and events, as attendance is mandatry unless therwise nted. All members will be at band camp rehearsals and rehearsals during the schl year fr the entire scheduled time. Band Camp is MANDATORY fr all students in rder t march this seasn. If yu cannt attend band camp, yu must see Mr. Ortz ASAP. Students are allwed n mre than 2 excused absences befre being benched fr perfrmances (until apprved by their advisr and the directr) The fllwing will NOT be excused absences. The schedule was finalized, made available and distributed in February (6 mnths prir t ur seasn) and students are expected t make arrangements t meet ur attendance requirements in rder t participate. Wrk Vacatin Appintments (special cnsideratin may be cnsidered nly if appintment times are limited) Camps/Activities nt assciated with GHS If yu play a sprt, yu must let Mr. Ortz and any apprpriate band staff members knw ASAP. It is the student s respnsibility t supply the band directr with a list f all ptential scheduling cnflicts as sn as they are knwn. We will arrange with yur caches when yu will cme t band rehearsals and when yu will g t yur ther cmmitments. Yu will nt miss a game/match because f band rehearsal and yu will nt miss a band perfrmance fr a sprts practice. If yu were apprved t miss rehearsal because f a practice/game and that practice/game ends early r is cancelled, yu are expected t be at band rehearsal that day. Example: if sccer practice is frm 3:00-4:30, and band is frm 3:00-5:15, yu will be at band rehearsal frm 4:30-5:15. If sccer is cancelled, yu will be at band 3:00-5:15. If yu chse nt t attend band rehearsal after practice, it will cunt as an unexcused absence and the apprpriate cnsequences will fllw. Absence Plicy: Smetimes there may be a reasn t be absent. All excuses must be filled ut n a Band Excuse Frm. The excuse frm must be turned in t bth the directr and apprpriate advisr (if applicable) ne week befre the day that yu need t miss. Failure t use a Band Excuse Frm will result in benching fr the fllwing perfrmance and cunt as an unexcused absence. Recurring unexcused absences will result in remval frm the grup. The Band Excuse Frm can be fund utside Mr. Ortz's ffice they are the yellw frms Wrk is NOT an acceptable excuse fr missing a rehearsal r perfrmance; because the schedule is given fr the entirety f the seasn, it is the student s respnsibility t arrange their wrk schedule arund schl functins Likewise, hmewrk is als NOT an acceptable excuse fr missing a rehearsal r perfrmance. Arrange yur schedules accrding t yur cmmitments. 2

4 (ATTENDANCE POLICY CONTINUED) Attendance Vilatins: 1 st Unexcused Absence n 3 rd quarter break Students are permitted t get fd frm anther student, but must nt leave the stands Students are nly permitted t leave the stands t use the restrm, with permissin frm their advisr r the band directr Students are nt permitted t have visitrs (ie. Nn-band members) in the stands with them while their 3 rd quarter privileges are revked 2 nd Unexcused Absence n 3 rd quarter break AND student will nt perfrm at halftime 3 rd Unexcused Absence n 3 rd quarter break, student will nt perfrm at halftime, and student will meet with Mr. Ortz and their advisr t determine if the student will remain in the band. Late Arrivals Late arrivals are unacceptable in this band prgram. Barring any extenuating circumstances (accidents, illness, etc.) students need t be at their apprpriate reprt lcatin (lined up in 2 s, in the band rm, n the field, etc.) AT the reprt time. If the reprt has students at the field at 4:30, they need t be AT the field, with equipment and ready fr rehearsal t begin prmptly at 4:30. If call time is at 4:30 DO NOT arrive t the schl at 4:30. Yu will be marked late. As this is a grup activity, fr every minute that rehearsal is delayed due t late arrivals the entire grup will perfrm attentin drills fr the apprpriate amunt f time. Yu shuld hld yur peers accuntable t their respnsibilities as well. 1.) Student permitted 2 Late Arrivals, but will lse 3 rd Quarter privileges 2.) All subsequent late arrivals will be handled as unexcused absences (see abve) **All ther attendance issues will be handled at the discretin f the directr** 3

Unifrms Full Unifrm: Hat/Plume Unifrm Jacket Unifrm Pants White Marching Shes/Scks Summer Unifrms: Band Pl Shirt Khaki Shrts r Khaki Pants White Marching Shes/Scks All schl-wned unifrm parts will be stred at the high schl at all times. (Bandfrnt excluded.) Students will be respnsible fr care and maintenance f all parts f the unifrm. If any repairs need t be made, r any parts need t be replaced, which are due t mistreatment f the unifrm, students will be held financially respnsible fr the apprpriate csts. Part f the care and maintenance f unifrms is hanging them up prperly. Members will be shwn hw t prperly hang their unifrm during band camp and will be expected t hang their unifrm up crrectly fllwing each time the unifrm is wrn. Prir t perfrmances f the band, all band and bandfrnt members will g thrugh inspectin with their Sectin Leaders. If inspectin is nt passed fr a severe reasn, it will result in the band member nt being able t perfrm until the unifrm expectatins are met. The band member will be required t attend the event, but will nt be able t perfrm. Fr away events, all unifrms must be inspected befre lading the bus. D nt get n the bus until yu check in with yur sectin leader and yu are cleared fr the night s perfrmance. Band members will be checked fr the fllwing: Clean, pressed unifrms (n stains, n wrinkles), including clean shes All unifrm parts crrectly wrn Hair crrectly wrn all hair will be up ff the cllar at all perfrmances N intrusive jewelry (ie. hp earrings, lng necklace chains, bracelets, etc.) Flip flder with music fr the perfrmance Clean instruments/equipment in wrking rder Shes WILL get dirty! Please make sure that they are clean fr each perfrmance. (Windex wrks well.) Raincats will be kept by the band and distributed as needed. Hatbxes and garment bags will nt be permitted in the stands. During cld games, it is allwed fr yu t have extra layers t keep warm, as lng as yu ensure that it des nt cause a distractin frm ur perfrmance in the stands, r interfere with playing in any significant way. A dark blue shirt shuld be wrn under the marching unifrm at all times. Hats shuld be wrn facing frward at all times. During perfrmances, the brim f the hat shuld be at eyebrw level. Band members (male and female) with lng hair shuld pull back their hair (including bangs) and tuck their hair int their hat. Unifrms will remain zipped up at all times, suspenders up and jackets zipped and buttned, unless therwise specified by the directr r drum majr. Bandfrnt bts will als be zipped at all times. Bandfrnt girls are expected t wear their unifrm in the stands. During cld games, it is acceptable t wear warm-ups and/r additinal layers in the stands. It will be left t the discretin f the advisrs if warm-ups are t be wrn during ur field perfrmances. 4

6 4. Band Camp and Rehearsal Etiquette BE ON TIME. Again, late arrivals are unacceptable in this band prgram. D nt shw up at the reprt time. reprt time shuld be when yu at yur reprt lcatin, prepared and immediately ready fr the rehearsal t begin. A gd rule f thumb is t arrive 5-10 minutes early t give yurself time t prepare After Band Camp, the Marching Band will nt rehearse during schl hurs. We will blck ff the fllwing time fr rehearsals, but nly use these times if needed. Keep in mind: if yu are efficient with my time, I will be efficient with yur time. Yu shuld be available fr rehearsals: Every Friday frm 4:30 t 5:30 (again, d NOT be late t these rehearsals) Students will be given a dinner break between ur 4:30 rehearsal and game time/departure time. We are having these rehearsals ONLY n Fridays t interfere less ften with ther activities and ensure maximum attendance at ur rehearsals. Students shuld be prepared and have all materials fr rehearsal. This includes instrument, music, drill charts, pencils, reeds, il, water, etc. Students will nt use their cell phnes during rehearsals. Any student wh des use their phne during rehearsal will lse it. As there are many students in ur ensemble, sectin leaders will be given the respnsibility f keeping their sectins hnest f this rule. Sectin leaders may cnfiscate phnes during rehearsal and give them t the directr. Cell phne use during rehearsal is a vilatin f the Cde f Cnduct and will result in lsing 3 rd Quarter priviledges It is expected that every band member shw respect t anyne prviding instructin. This includes (but is nt limited t): the directr, the bandfrnt advisrs, the assistant directr, the frnt line advisr, the percussin advisr, and any ther band staff, etc. Disrespect and/r insubrdinatin directed twards any staff member will be cnsidered cause fr immediate dismissal frm the grup. If there is any disagreement between a staff member and student, please cme see Mr. Ortz after rehearsal r during a break t have a discrete cnversatin abut the issue. Any student nt fllwing prper band camp/rehearsal etiquette will be cnsidered t be in vilatin f the band s cnduct plicy. 5

7 5. Perfrmance Etiquette Reprt at yur scheduled reprt time prmptly. D NOT be late. All late arrivals will be have 3 rd Quarter privileges revked, after 2 late arrivals students will be benched fr perfrmances Fr every minute that rehearsal is delayed due t lateness, ne minute f attentin drills will fllw Students shuld wear the full unifrm at all times unless instructed differently by the band directr r drum majr. Bandfrnt unifrms shuld never be wrn dwn the waist, bts shuld never be unzipped and band cats shuld remain zipped up with trusers in place (with shulder straps up). The band will march int and back ut f the bleacher area at bth hme and away games. We will line up in tws utside the band rm fr hme games and by the bus at away events. We will line up in frnt f the bleachers t exit. Due t safety cncerns, the band will NOT march n the rad t the hme field. We will march in tws n the sidewalk next t the main rad. Only the fllwing shuld be taken t the stands with yu: Instrument Music Raincat/Varsity jacket (weather-dependent) A small bag fr persnal items Any item that causes a distractin will be cnfiscated Students are nt permitted t use their cell phnes in the stands befre/during/after the game All members shuld be alert as t what is happening in the game and in frnt f the stands. Be ready t react immediately t instructins given by the drum majr, directr r band staff. Every single band member is expected t play stands tunes thrughut the game. (Only rehearsed tunes will be played in games.) Play what and when yu are instructed t play, nly. Stp when yu are directed t stp. D nt begin ndling tunes after they are annunced. It is extremely unprfessinal and brdering n amateurish; we are better than that. We play as a grup, r nt at all. All members are t remain seated with their sectin. D nt wander thrugh the stands. Additinally, nly band members are permitted t sit with the band. D nt allw friends including alumni int the stands with us during any type f perfrmance. If it is nt yur instrument, yu d nt have anyne s permissin t play it. If it is nt yur equipment, yu d nt have anyne s permissin t use it. This includes friends and, in particular, visiting alumni. Nt nly is it highly unprfessinal, but it causes a distractin and increases the risk f damaging ur equipment. N exceptins. When instructed t line up, d s quickly and quietly. All members are expected t treat members f ther ensembles, ther schl fficials and spectatrs with respect. This includes (but is nt limited t) respectfully watching ther perfrmances, having civil cnversatins/interactins with ther students, etc. Negative cmments directed twards ther perfrmers (grup r individual) will nt be tlerated and will be cnsidered a vilatin f the Cde f Cnduct. Any prfanity r slur directed twards anther perfrmer will be cnsidered grunds fr immediate dismissal frm the grup. 6

8 (PERFORMANCE ETIQUETTE CONTINUED) During hme games, ur band will perfrm secnd at halftime. While waiting fr the away band t finish their perfrmance, all band members shuld be listening t the ther band attentively. N members shuld be mving arund r talking. During away games, ur band will perfrm first at halftime. Upn the cnclusin f ur shw, the band will march t a previusly specified end zne and stand t watch the ther band s perfrmance. N members shuld be mving arund r talking. 3 rd Quarter Break is a privilege granted at each ftball game. The band will be dismissed after the halftime shw t purchase refreshments. Band members shuld return t the stands BEFORE the game clck hits 2:00 t end the quarter d NOT be late. Yu shuld be heading back t the stands BEFORE the clck hits 2:00, nt after. This privilege will be revked fr vilatins f ur cnduct plicy r attendance plicy Perfrmance etiquette shuld cntinue after the cnclusin f ur games. While yu are in unifrm, yu are fully expected t represent ur schl district well. 7

9 6. Bus Etiquette During band camp, students will sign up fr a bus n a psted bus list. The students will be n this bus fr the remainder f the seasn. Fr safety reasns, at n time will a student be permitted t change what bus they are n. If a student switches their bus r attempts t cheat ur rle call system, it will be cnsidered a vilatin f the band s cnduct plicy. Alternate transprtatin may be prvided if necessary. While n the band bus, band members will bey all psted bus rules. If a cnversatin can be heard in the frnt f the bus, it is TOO LOUD! There will be n hanging ut f r talking ut f bus windws, nr will there be flash phtgraphy taken n the bus. This is fr the safety f everyne. Remain seated n the bus until yu are dismissed by the directr r a band staff member (which will nly happen nce all trash is picked up and the bus lks as thugh the band was never there). Students wh are nt riding the bus hme must turn in a nte signed by their parents befre the bus leaves the schl. D NOT get n the bus until yu check in with yur sectin leader fr yur unifrm/equipment inspectin. Once n the bus, d nt leave the bus. Use the restrm befre we leave and plan accrdingly. Sme f ur bus rides can be rather lng. We will take rle befre we leave fr each event, at each rest stp (if applicable), and befre returning. Seating n the bus is pen (students chice), but if nise r behavir becmes an issue there will be regular assigned seats fr all members n that bus. If this seating situatin is needed, ignring this assigned seating will be cnsidered a vilatin f the band s cnduct plicy. 8

Care f Instruments and Equipment Band members shuld take care t see that their instruments and equipment (whether it is yur wn persnal instrument r ne yu are brrwing) are in prper wrking, playing and perfrming cnditin. If ANY issues are fund with yur equipment, infrm a member f the band staff immediately s it can be handled prperly. Use yur best judgment, but d nt try t fix equipment r instruments yurself All instruments shuld be stred in their prper lcatins when they are nt in use. Drumline equipment will be prperly stacked in the marching strage areas fllwing each use. All ther instruments shuld be stred n their prper shelves in the instrument strage rm, NOT ON THE FLOOR! Speaking f the strage rms at abslutely n pint will there be any fd r drink in the strage areas. Clean up all papers and garbage ff the flr (ie. reeds, reed wrappers, music, etc.) and keep these areas prepsterusly clean and easily accessible. It is yur respnsibility t check yur case befre yu lad it t see that yu have everything yu need. Again, all band members are t nly tuch, use and play THEIR OWN INSTRUMENT/EQUIPMENT. Students will nt play ther instruments while in the stands. This includes friends and visiting alumni. If it is nt yurs, d nt tuch it. Only percussinists and thse designated by a band staff member are allwed t carry, tuch r play drumline r pit percussin equipment. Again, this includes friends and visiting alumni. 9

11 8. Parent/Guardian Invlvement The supprt f the parents, guardians and families f the members f the GHS Marching Band is essential t ur success. The band is frtunate t have s many families invlved and we strive t have as many peple supprt the rganizatin as pssible. Hw can parents, guardians and family members help? When a band questin arises, it is imprtant that yu get factual infrmatin befre discussing it with thers. If it is a perfrmance issue r anything dealing with the band prper, cntact the directr. If it is a fundraising questin r anything dealing with the bster rganizatin, cntact a bster fficer. At the game is nt an apprpriate time t discuss issues r cncerns with the directr r staff members. We are there fr all f ur students and shuld nt be pulled away frm that duty t discuss huse-keeping matters. r ffice visits are the best ways t handle almst all questins and cncerns. Mr. Ortz s can be fund at the end f this handbk Mr. Ortz s ffice hurs are Mnday thrugh Friday, 2:45 t 3:15 Fr all questins/cncerns/feedback related t the plicies and, in particular, the prcedures f the marching band, please cntact the band directr befre addressing the schl administratin. They have quite a lt t handle and in almst every case, they will frward yu t the directr anyway. Here are sme ther ways t be invlved: Sign up fr s frm ur Bster Organizatin. We send ut a mnthly newsletter with infrmatin and regular reminders abut fundraisers, events, etc. Sign up fr free text ntificatins via Remind t Jin the Band Bster Organizatin Teach yur child the imprtance f being prepared and n time t each rehearsal r lessn Make faithful attendance at all band activities imprtant Shw an interest in the musical studies f yur child Help yur child find a quiet place where they can practice withut interruptin Keep the instrument in gd repair and keep supplies (reeds, il, grease, tuner, metrnme, etc.) fr yur child Be extra careful with schl wned instruments. Repairs are cstly! Prvide private instructin! 12 9. Respnsibilities f the Band Member BE ON TIME t all rehearsals and perfrmances. Late arrivals are unacceptable. At the end f rehearsal, put all materials in their prper place; clean up all paper and trash and straighten the chairs/stands in the rm. This includes all percussin equipment and music Maintain a STRONG academic standing in all cursewrk. Becme respnsible fr and assume respnsibility fr yur wn actins. Admit when yu are wrng. Shw prper respect fr yurself and thse in authrity. Read and play thrugh music with insight have musical expectatins. Fllw all plicies utlined in the Greenville Student Handbk. It is essential t any prgram that if certain expectatins are t be met that they crdinate with the privileges, rewards and duties f the band prgram. 11

13 Dear Students and Parents, Thank yu fr taking the time t read ver this handbk. I cannt express hw imprtant it is fr everyne t be n the same page regarding the expectatins fr the 2018 marching seasn. I really anticipate this being anther great year fr the marching band. We are again bringing n sme new staff members and really reaching fr a stunningly high quality f perfrmance. Frm the visual elements t the sund f the grup, I really hpe yu are impressed with what ur kids will be putting n the field this year. Knwing what they are all capable f, I am very excited t see the final prduct. Please take nte f the schedule fr this summer. We will be having music rehearsals n July 11 th, 18 th and 25 th fr all musicians and will again be ding a Basics Camp n August 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd. Basics is mandatry fr all first and secnd year marchers, all f the pit percussin, drumline, bandfrnt and student leadership (captains, sectin leaders, drum majr, etc.) All ther members are welcme t attend, but it is nt required. Full Camp is mandatry fr all members. Fr thse that can, while planning vacatins please try t schedule them fr July r earlier if pssible. All rehearsals will be held at GHS. Please see the schedule fr specific times. As with last seasn, ur staff wants the final prduct f ur shw t be the first glimpse fr anyne utside the prgram. I greatly appreciate the cmmunity invlvement and supprt in Greenville. Hwever, I must ask that if yu are nt directly invlved with band camp, yu allw my band staff and the students t wrk t ur highest ptential. This means nt attending band camp as a spectatr fr all alumni, friends and family. Thank yu fr yur supprt and understanding. I am happy t annunce that we will be having an Alumni Band event this year at ur Hmecming game! Any interested alumni shuld cntact me at the schl ( belw) t get music fr the event! They will be invited t perfrm with us during ur half-time shw fr the feature tune and the schl fight sng. Again, I am abslutely thrilled fr this marching seasn!
