9th March 2018 Message from the Headteacher Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Governors There are two events that have been real highlights for me recently: Parents' Evening and our re-scheduled World Book Day. At Parents' Evenings staff really appreciated talking through targets and next steps with family members. The support that parents can give children at home is so important and has a really big impact on children's progress and attainment. Staff really value that time to learn more about children so that their teaching can be more effective in meeting children's individual needs. While Parents' Evening is still fresh in your mind, it might be a good time to visit Parent View to share your feedback with us and Ofsted. You can click on the logo below to access the website. Our World Book Day celebration today was based on the theme of sharing books. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the children dressed up, talking about books and reading on this special day. Mrs Exton was very pleased with the response to the World Book Day competition and she has been posting photographs of the day on Twitter. It was pleasing to see so many children dressed up as their parent's favourite characters: for the first time ever (I think) we had Arthur Dent, a princess from the Polish story 'Akademia Pana Kleksa', Queen Esther from the Bible and Stig of the Dump.
Also today our Reading Ambassadors had time to share books with younger children, and Mrs Paige-Smith arranged for the school to be given hundreds of pounds worth of books. Thank you very much to her employer Moto. Here is one of my favourite parts of the day, back in Early Years sharing a story with some F1s! Happy reading! Kate Flowerdew Headteacher
Special Hot School Dinners coming up... Monday 23rd April - Best of British Classic Toad in the Hole Vegetarian toad in the Hole Cheese and Potato Pie This is St George s day and we wish to promote British produce. Nut Free School Please remember that Spucroft is a NUT FREE school. Please make sure your children do not bring in any food containing nuts. Thank you Spring Course Friday 13th April 2018 A day for established beginner, junior and intermediate woodwind, brass and string players We would like to invite all appropriate pupils learning a wind, brass, percussion or string instrument to our annual Spring Course to be held this year on Friday 13th April The course is aimed at those pupils who are already established players and have been learning for at least two terms, whether in small groups or individual lessons. We hope this Spring Course will enthuse and inspire students in the playing of their instrument. The course is for both primary and secondary pupils and will give them the opportunity to work together and bridge the gap between year 6 and year 7. Here is a link to the website with more details about what pupils will be doing during the day.
The courses run as follows: Park House Football Competition Finals The Year 3/4 football boy s team had finished 1 st overall in their league group and earned a place in the finals. There were 9 teams in the finals split into 2 groups. In freezing conditions the boys would need to stay focused. Players would need to step up to face some tough opposition. We faced Hermitage first and early on the main possession was with Hermitage however Jack took a strike on goal from inside the half and it was on target but deflected off Ethan. An excellent save from Deegan kept us in the game and with all the boys working tirelessly on the pitch the match ended 0-0. Next we played Falkland and again the boys performance was great with end to end football and Deegan being called upon to make some super saves. Another draw for the team 0-0. Last we played John Rankin and started strong again with solid defence from Jordan, Harry and Fletcher ensuring that our strikers had chances but unfortunately couldn t find the net. A deflected goal close to the end for John Rankin resulted in a 1-0 win to them. The boys play had impressed Mrs Thompson with Ethan working hard to cover lots of ground, Jack, Fletcher and Jordan making some strong tackles. Harry, Connor and Danny passing the ball well and an all-round superb team
performance. Spurcroft hadn t made it through to the top 2 places but should be extremely proud of their play. Many thanks to the parents that helped with transport and support the team. Well done to all the players: Deegan Delport, Jordan Frost, Danny Richardson, Ethan Baker, Jack Woodrow, Harry Chapman, Fletcher Mackie and Connor Jay- Rackham. KS1 Multi skills sports event Twelve KS1 children represented the school at a multi-skills sports event which was held at Kennet Secondary School. The children competed in different activities involving agility, balance and co-ordination, and using balls, bats, dodgeball, fitness work and relay work. All the children competed superbly and showed excellent team work, determination, resilience and excellence. The Year 10 Kennet students led the sessions.
All the children participated in each event really well and received a certificate. Everyone encouraged one another, experienced some new sports and worked as a team. Well done to all the children: Phoebe Chapman, Hollie Beaumont, Olivia Grzadkowska, Ella Wilkins, Lydia Wimbridge, Ava Woodrow, Honey Mackie, Sam Mogg, Jessica O Sullivan, Abigail Kester, Elliot Morgan and Jack Harding. Friendly Netball match v Falkland A friendly netball match had been arranged for some of the children who had not yet played in a match to give them some experience of playing against an opposition. We played against Falkland school and despite not scoring any goals the team never gave up and always worked hard. The defence made some good interceptions and worked the ball through centre court for the attackers to feed the circle. The shooters had many chances but couldn t quite score any goals. Well done to everyone for working hard and showing resilience and determination to never give up. Erin was awarded players player from the opposition for her
excellent play throughout the match. Well done to the team: Eva Fielden, William Appleby, Erin Jarvis, Gracie Collins, Millie Jury, Lucy Farmer, Lucy O Sullivan, Evie Kernoghan, Cora Francis and Olivia Titcombe. Thank you to the parents who supported the team, cheering, scoring and timing. Regional Indoor Athletics Event February 2018 Spucroft were very fortunate to have both their Yr 5/6 and Yr 3/4 athletes at the Regional Indoor Athletics Event held at St Barts School. All the children competed in various events against the top 8 teams from the whole of Berkshire. Throughout the day the children worked really hard on the track and field events and aimed for personal bests. The children took part in a maximum of 2 track events (sprints, relays or obstacle races) and 2 field events (standing long jump, triple jump, 5 strides, javelin, vertical jump, speed bounce or chest push). Spurcroft made some excellent baton changes during their trcak races.
The Year3/4 children took part in their events in the morning and performed really well in the field events: especially on the vertical jump and chest push. The track events were very competitive with some excellent races. The results were in and Spurcroft had finished in 4 th place a superb achievement. The children showed fantastic team spirit and supported their team on each of the races. The Year 5/6 children took part in the afternoon and the athletes had some very tough competitive events, they performed really well on the triple jump and javelin, 1x1 lap and 2x2 lap events. Overall they finished 7 th.the children proudly
represented the school with excellent behaviour, supporting and encouraging everyone. Well done to everyone. The Yr 3/4 team were: Gia Khuu, Archie Urquart, Alfie Turley, Deegan Delport, Maciej Wieczorek Ethan Baker, Isaac Layton, George Studart, Jordan Frost, Evan Alderman, Sam Evans, Ned Taylor, Leila Gaye, Lily Otorepec, Mia Bowley, Bo Deas, Leila Colbourne, Phoebe Massey, Isabelle Wood, Chloe O Riordan, Sophia Billington and Bailey Billington. Yr 5/6 team: Connor Joyce, Drew Radbourne, Archie Goode, Alex Davey, Edward Cain, Callum Little, Teddy Mackie, William Appleby, Bobby Brown, Ben Richardson, Catherine Jones, Maddy Baker. Teagan Kell, Sophie Schofield, Jess Schofield, Abbie Brown, Poppie Lilley, Lucy O Sullivan, Evie Massey and Lorena Catalan-Lopez. Many thanks as always to Gary Brooker who runs school athletics club and who came on the day to encourage and support the children. Semi-final for Girls Tony Mosson Cup match Spurcroft girl footballers faced Falkland in the replay semi-finals of the Tony Mosson Cup away. We knew that we needed to make a quick start and both teams started strong and were determined to play a good match against tough opposition. An opportunity arose for Teagan to score as she head towards the goal but the shot went wide. At half time the score was level 0-0. Unfortunately Falkland were stronger in attack and a scramble in the box saw them score a goal. Although Spurcroft showed determination we couldn t score and the game finished 3-0 to Falkland. Mrs Thompson was extremely proud of the girls for their achievements and success in the Tony Mosson Cup. Thanks to the parents for their support and cheering on the side of the match. Well done everyone: Isabella Oelosfe, Sophie Schofield, Jess Schofield, Tate Billington, Catherine Jones, Issy Lawrence, Teagan Kell, Gracie Collins, Abbie Brown and Jess Argyle.
