1 Newsletter for Students and Parents Friday 12th October 2018 Timetable: Week commencing Monday 15th October will be Timetable Week A Learners of today, Leaders of tomorrow. The Principal writes It was great to see so many Year 11 students and their parents, including a huge number of external students also, at our College VI Open Evening this week. I hope that the event helped students to make some key decisions about the courses they intend to study next year. A reminder that the deadline for applications from internal students is 9th November 2018 and the deadline for external students is 14th December all applications are to be submitted directly through our website. We are looking forward to seeing parents of Year 11 students again next Wednesday, 17th October 2018 for the GCSE Parents' Workshop. Parents will have the opportunity to put themselves in students' shoes, experience approaches to learning and revision and better understand how students can be best prepared for examinations. With Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs) next month, this event is timed to try to help parents to support students at this key time. It is hard to believe that we only have one more week before half term! We have had an excellent start to the academic year and, in particular, I want to congratulate Year 7 students who have settled into Collegiate life brilliantly and are demonstrating excellent enthusiasm and effort in their learning and approach to secondary school. Next Friday's Choir of the Year Competition will be a great opportunity to see students enjoying performing together, whilst they compete for their College. The rivalry is building for this first competitive event of the year and we are looking forward to an afternoon of superb musical entertainment. Temporary Administrator Vacancy We are looking for a temporary Administrator to work during school hours, initially until the end of the Autumn Term. If you are interested please admin@riddlesdown.org with your cv and your availability and we will contact you with further details. 2 Riddlesdown PE fixtures Round Up This week has been the busiest week yet as Riddlesdown sports teams stepped out to compete against other schools. These all started last Friday when the Year 11 girls travelled to Croydon High to compete in The Surrey Schools Championships. The girls play was excellent all day and they were unfortunate to just miss out on qualification, winning 3 and losing 2 of their group games. The girls showed great team spirit throughout and should be really proud of their achievements. On Saturday morning, a mixture of Year 9/10 rugby boys headed to Hayes School to play against Hayes on their open morning. The boys were fantastic from start to finish, leading 28-0 at half time and winning overall. On Monday, the Year 11 football team got back to winning ways with a convincing 7-2 win over Hollyfield in The Surrey Cup. The teams cohesion was excellent and made a huge difference to the outcome. Aaron Stewart made his return to the squad after three years away and scored two. Josh Sargent scored two cracking goals to help seal the victory and pass of the day had to go to Aaron Jenkins for a great assist that split the Hollyfield defence in two. The boys face Hampton away in the next round. Tuesday was a very busy day with the Year 10 netball girls heading to Wallington Grammar for a tournament. The A team did really well, recording some excellent wins against tough opposition. The B team fought well against an array of quality in what was some of the girls first ever game. These girls are developing their netball skills to enhance their GCSE grades and although they may not have won many games, they learnt a lot and developed their skills against good opposition, as well as observing the A team and the way they play. The Year 10 football teams were both at home against St Andrews and Harris South Norwood. The A team were 1-0 winners and battled really hard to seal the victory, progressing to the second round of the Croydon Cup. The B team played against a very good Harris South Norwood A team and lost 6-2. Only two schools have B teams and it means that our B teams will always play against A teams in competitions and come up against some very good players. The boys never gave up and battled until the end in true Riddlesdown style. The final games on Tuesday were the Year 8 B football team and the Year 8 rugby team. The Year 8 B came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against St Joseph s in an excellent game. Both teams were fantastic with both goalkeepers making some crucial saves. The Year 8 rugby team played against Wallington Grammar and came out 8-6 winners in an absolute thriller. The Year 8 team had some Year 7 boys playing and together put in a solid team performance to steal the victory. Wednesday was cross-country day and 49 Riddlesdown students put on their running vests to compete against Croydon s finest runners. The Year 7s got the show on the road with 14 boys and 11 girls competing. The girls raced first and were superb with the first four runners making up the A team and finishing 2 nd overall. This team of four included Alyze Gentles 3 rd, Eloise Sullivan-Flatt 9 th, Ella Greenaway 13 th and Lyra White 22 nd. These girls finished 2 nd to Croydon High and all of our runners finished in the top 50 out of 90 runners. The Year 7 boys started shortly after and also did very well, finishing 3 rd place, only beaten by Whitgift and Trinity. The first four runners that made up the A team were Tom Harmer 6 th, Eralb Hyselli 7 th, Max Lorke 10 th and Chris Bull 14 th. All of our Year 7s were fantastic on the day and we had more students than any other school competing. The afternoon saw the Year 8/9 students competing and once again both sets of students were amazing. The boys and girls both finished 3 rd overall. The girls A team was made up of Jenna Hooper 7 th, Naomi Lines 17 th, Amelie Van Aalst 15 th and Jasmine Kelly 18 th. The boys A team was made up of Daniel Murray 3 rd, Marcus Mountain 13 th, Patrick Boniface 15 th and Joshua Burr 26 th. The final race of the day was the Year 10/11 race. Due to injuries and absence we only had two brave competitors who took to the field and both girls did extremely well. Rose Sharp finished 12 th and Melissa Prouten finished 13 th. All of our runners should be extremely proud of themselves as they did so well. The standard of Croydon Schools Cross Country is very good and lots of these students train every day for such an event. Our students were complimented by several schools for their sportsmanship, team spirt and support for one another. They all were excellent ambassadors of the Collegiate on the

3 PE fixtures continued. The Year 11 rugby team were back in action on Wednesday and another tough fixture, this time against Wallington Boys. Once again Riddlesdown were on the back foot early and had to dig deep and work hard to stay in the game. The final score finished 30-5 to Wallington with another lesson in ball handling given. The boys kept their heads up and never gave up throughout the game, showing what strong characters they are. Next game is Sunbury Manor away in the Surrey Cup. Thursday was another big day in the diary with the Year 9 & 10 netball girls heading to Surbiton for the Surrey Schools Championships. The girls had an interesting start to the day with one court being deemed unplayable early on, which meant the day was delayed throughout. The Year 9 girls played extremely well on the day, beating some really strong opposition, winning 4, drawing 1 and losing 2. The Year 10 team were unfortunate to only win 1 game on the day after putting themselves in excellent positions at half time, but being pipped to the post in the final moments in a couple of games. Both sets of girls showed great determination throughout the day, fighting to the last moments in every game. Surrey Schools Championships is where the best netball schools in the county come together to compete against one another and the standard is extremely high. Well done to all the girls involved on such a long and demanding day. You showed great team spirit throughout and we hope this continues throughout the season. The last fixture of the week was the Year 10 A football team who travelled to Twickenham School to play their first round of the Surrey Cup. The boys had their best performance of the season, digging in to win 3-0 in what was a solid team performance. The team was excellent from the first minute and fought for every ball. Two or three new players joined the side and showed they can compete with the best, playing some excellent football. The boys now progress to the second round and face either Grey Court or Stanley Park. Well done to all students involved in fixtures this week and well done to all the students who attended clubs. Taking part in sport is a crucial ingredient to a Healthy Active Lifestyle and this is something we strongly promote at Riddlesdown. We hope to see lots more at clubs again next week. 4 Year 11 Classics Trip to the London Mithraeum and the British Museum On Tuesday 18 th September, Year 11 Classics students received the opportunity to visit two excellent locations in search of expanding our Classical knowledge. Visiting these two places (the London Mithraeum and the British Museum) allowed us to expand our knowledge on ancient monuments and people and search for the well-hidden Theseus Kylix! Viewing these ancient monuments up close allowed us to visualise and expand on facts and details which we had learnt in class. We especially found the sculptures in the Parthenon one of the most exciting parts of the day as we were able to see in detail the high-relief and facial expressions which the Ancient Greeks had created. The London Mithraeum, where the Temple of Mithras is located, allowed us to have an immersive and visual exploration to life and sacrifice in the Ancient World, with the excitement of sound effects and lighting to help us imagine the chaotic surroundings. The Latin speaking too was a great touch to the multi-sensory experience! A photography contest nearer the end of our day allowed us to be more creative with our skills and attempt to take photos to enhance the features on some of the sculpture work. Overall, the day was fantastic as it was a great way to expand and build on our previously learnt Ancient facts and spend the day learning and seeing new details which we hadn t already picked up on in class. We are very grateful to the Classics teachers who organised and came with us on this trip as without them, we would have never seen the amazing museums and most importantly, the famous Theseus Kylix which we were all so eager to see! Thank you! Aimee Shardlow 11Cl1/ 11MMM Careers Fair On 8 th November 2018, Key Stage 4 and 5 students and parents are welcome to attend our annual careers fair in partnership with Woodcote High School. This year the Event will take place at Woodcote from pm. Students and their parents will have the opportunity to informally talk to employers from a wide range of sectors, as well as further and higher education providers and gap year companies. Some of the employers have indicated their ability to take on students for work experience, as well as discuss apprenticeships in their field, so it is an excellent chance to network with people in the local business community. At least one organisation is eager to talk to students about their Degree Apprenticeship programme. This will allow students to gain 3 years of competitively paid work experience whilst studying towards a university degree, paid for by the company. If you re interested in gaining a degree without the debt come along and find out more! Miss Knox
