The swp meet ws very close ll spces sold, re ws good turnout of spectts. However, erly Fd prts of ny pre-wr vintge were lmost non-existent. There were lots of prts, but most seemed be G.M. were from 60 s up. Tht seems be wy t most swp meets now, erly prts don t show up, mybe y re ll gone who knows! The second swp meet ws big one in Klmzoo put on by Klmzoo Old Cr. This meet hs been first weekend in Februry f over 50 yers, continues drw very lrge turnout of spectts vends from not only surrounding re, but surrounding sttes. On Sturdy by 11:00 m plce ws pcked, wlking isles ws difficult. Ftuntely we got re erly, hd luxury of being ble move t our leisure. Although re plenty of prts, y sold out of vender spce, erly Fd prts were few fr between.but unlike Sginw, re were some pre-wr prts vilble. I ttended this meet continully since 1963, s lwys did come home with few prts lighter wllet. This club lso hosts Red Brns Spectculr swp meet in first weekend of August, but tht meet, lthough lrge, hs hrendous prking problem! There is only one exit seven prking res converge. The lst time we went it ok over n hour go one-qurter mile exit. They know bout problem, but nothing hs ever been done. So, tht meet lthough good, is off my list..i don t need frustrtion. Oh, speking of rdit hoses, if pplicble vehicle, mke sure tht botm hose hs spring it s supposed in it, remember tht is nor source of metl eventully croding wy. I ve tlked bout resons f engines overheting befe, but hd couple of folks sk tht I tlk bout it me in depth so, here goes. Strting with obvious, consider tht cooling system is just not big enough. Next could be rmostt tht is stuck closed prtilly closed, you should lwys run rmostt. Next could be mke sure het guge is wking crectly, tht het guge sens is submerged in coolnt. Eventully wter pump cn fil, lso consider tht steel cst impeller cn rust wy, get smller from crosion, be wrong one f ppliction. Mke sure pulleys re crect, s y could be turning o slow circulte coolnt properly. A fn shroud is very imptnt, fn bldes should be bout hlfwy in shroud. Remember, if you put bldes o fr in shroud y could severely dmge rdit, becuse y will pull in wrd rdit s engine revs up. There re different styles of fns vilble, with vrious blde configurtions blde counts, flex fns tht never seem wk s dvertised. Also note tht bldes been known come off fns, especilly flex fns, so lwys st cler wy from those rotting bldes, think bout preserving hood. A clutch fn is gret ide, s constntly turning fn gets in wy of ir flow when vehicles gets up over bout 35 MPH, but you do mke sure clutch fn is wking properly in der rely on it. The modern dy electric fns re good relible, if you do decide instll n electric fn, I strongly suggest rmostticlly controlled option. If you opt f mnul on/off fn, sooner lter you will fget turn it on overhet, fget turn it off cme bck ded bttery. Whew, is it hot is it just me? Now let s move on engine powertrin. Some uncring rebuilders will knock Welsh plugs (sometimes clled Ce Freeze plugs) in block, n re is coolnt restriction tht is very difficult trce. Also, o mny owners Moving right long, trying keep our vehicles moving, here re or considertions. Blocks tht been over bed do not pull het wy s well s sck block. Most engines crect method of instlling hed gskets, if y re put on bcksswrds, crect coolnt flow will be spped. We ll st of, mybe, kind of cre bout fuel economy, but n engine running o len cn overhet. Me compression will cuse me overheting. Restricted exhust flow cn cuse overheting. Me initil timing usully provides better perfmnce, but tht o cn cuse overheting. If you chnged rer end gering provide better ccelertion, engine fires me frequently tht cn cuse overheting. Mybe you chnged tque converter provide quicker ccelertion, but remember tht looser converter llows engine rotte me, s rer end gering will, tht o cn cuse overheting. Your cooling system is only wy engine cn dissipte extremely high tempertures built up inside block heds. The coolnt mixed with wter, hopefully distilled wter, crries het rdit, n rdit het is trnsferred fins blown wy in ir. Becuse rod grime debris cn ccumulte in those fins, rdit should be gently blown out t regulr intervls, fins strightened out, coolnt distilled wter chnged with fresh rust inhibit wter pump lubricnt.
