THE SHELDON GIFT The Sheldon Gift is a handicapped 1500m race which is an integral part of HPE Week. Our amazing Athletics Coach, Mr Ben Norton, calculates the handicaps to give every runner a chance at winning the race. Thank you to the ongoing support of the Gallagher family for sponsoring this event. This year the Gift was run in unseasonably hot weather! The winners of the 2016 Sheldon Gift were 12 year old EMILY MACBETH and 16 Year old WILL MORRIS. Second place in the girls went to LEAHROSE HOOPER and third to ISABELLA HARRIS. Second place in the boys went to TOM MACBETH with MAX HOOPER placing third. This event is always a highlight of the Sheldon College sporting calendar. Well done to all runners!

VICKI WILSON CUP Mrs Amanda Powell and our Senior Netball Coach, Merrin McCulloch took 10 of our strongest Netballers to the Vicki Wilson Cup at the Hibiscus Netball Centre on Monday. The team consisted of Claire Bates, Anemie Fourie, Mollie Harris, Rachel Howse, Ellie Lawson, Zoe Maidment, Ellie McBain, Gabriel van Wyk, Micayla van Wyk and Annabel White. It was not our day though the girls played well and we had some very close finishes but they didn t make it into the finals which was disappointing. They lost to All Hallows by 5 goals, then had a strong win over Mansfield State High School and then lost to Carmel College by another small margin. Bad luck girls! OTHER SPORTY STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS The following achievements have been reported to us by parents. DANIEL RENOUF played for the Under 11 SAP team of Western Pride Football club at the Premier Invitational youth soccer tournament on the Gold Coast recently. This is the squad he qualified for in January and has been training with twice a week as well as games on Saturdays and the SAP 6 weekly carnivals which are being held throughout Brisbane.

His team made it to through the qualifying rounds to the Premier Cup and he even scored his first goal for them. 3 days and 4.5 hours of soccer later we had one very tired little boy! Well done Daniel! LOCHLAN SHEMMELL recently won his age group in the Great Whitehaven Beach Run! Well done Lochlan! Every player showed some amazing defensive skills by sticking to their player and making it hard for the opposition to score. Thomas Neale and Alex Leggatt literally stuck to their player like glue!! Well done boys! Some great offensive play by William Swan, Cooper Jones, Dylan McBrien and Nicolas Yang ensured we stayed on top of the scoreboard and two fabulous baskets by Aditya Pradeep Rao were heavily celebrated by the boys! Keep up the great work boys!! Year 5 Boys Blue Team The sun rose in a crystal blue sky on the first day of a new season of JTAS basketball. Over the off-season the scouts had gathered the top players from the four corners of the globe. They came together to form the elite squad known as the Year 5 Boys Blue Team. In their first encounter of the season they came up against the Sheldon Year 5 Boys Red Team who were a fast and fit outfit under the guidance of gun netball coach Mrs Kelly. The first quarter was a tight and torrid affair with the score locked at four a piece. Flynn Green and Chobe Hockings worked hard in defence and ensured rebounds were a hotly contested affair. The second quarter saw the Blue team go two points ahead with Rielly Chapman and Nathan Evans staying on their man to keep possession of the with the Blue Team. William Reece-Anderson was tenacious in defence creating a number of dispossessions and key plays that gave the boys a four point lead into the final quarter of play. The crowd could feel the tide turning towards Team Blue. Noah Bevis and Rhys Swanson worked as a well-oiled machine, showing some awesome skill in the key with some creative passing on display. Much to their credit the Red team never gave up and the crowd were privileged to see two top teams in action. Player of the Week went to Nathan Evans who communicated well and was a vital part of the winning formula.

See you next week when the team take on Canterbury College at home in another Battle of the Titans. Year 5 Boys Red 17 v Sheldon Blue 22 All boys were keen to get on the court and have been training hard each week. The team started the game well against some tough opposition and was leading until the final quarter. The boys worked well as a team and put I a great effort for their first game. Congratulations to the Year 5 Blue team on a wonderful and fun game! Open Girls 36 v Canterbury College 26 The Sheldon Open Girls team was on fire in the first few minutes of the game taking an early lead from the Canterbury girls. As the game progressed the defensive power of Tahlia McCloskey, Lily Dawes and our new super star Bethany Smith was required to keep the Canterbury Girls in check. Sidney Perlin and Dani Costa Teixeira were our fantastic guards bringing the ball up through centre court to help convert our shots into points. It was a very physical game and with no subs the girls used all their energy to hold onto a win. In fact with just a few minutes to go in the game the girls were only leading by 1 point. They pulled together as a team and took home a solid 10 point win. Looking forward to a fantastic season. Go Sheldon! Year 5 Girls 32 v CHAC 4 The Year 5 girls had a convincing win on Saturday against Cannon Hill Anglican College All the girls contributed and played brilliantly from start to finish. Madison Witt top scored with 8 points (amazing given she only played the first half), with Sommer Sylvester and Ella Wilson scoring 6 each. Defensively, Sheldon was first class. Even in the second half when they were only allowed to defend in their defensive area, they made it incredibly difficult for the Cannon Hill team to move the ball freely. The Sheldon team's skills shone out with clever passing shown by Jada Nayef and Monica Schwantes setting up plenty of scoring opportunities. Olivia Wells showed great ball awareness both in attack and defence while Zoe Beith demonstrated tremendous stamina and strength all over the court. It was a great start to the season! Year 4 20 v Canterbury College 10 In the early hours of Saturday morning, the Year 4 basketball girls ventured out to Canterbury College to compete in their first JTAS Basketball game. Most of the team had never played a basketball game before and although nervous, took the court looking confident and wearing their Sheldon uniform with pride. The girls took charge of the court and Liezel scored the first goal of the game within minutes! All of the team gave their best, not stopping even when we were down to five players from half time. Points were scored by Liezel, Charlotte, Mia P, Sophie and Mia M. Winning with an incredible score of 20 to 10 against Canterbury. We are looking forward to our game against Redeemer at 10am Saturday, 30th July. Soccer Opens v Ormiston Following our team selection we were hoping our first game of the season gave us the opportunity to find our team strengths and areas for improvement on the pitch. We were up against a tough opposition at Ormiston and they did challenge our defence from the kick off with their speed and agility up front. However, we did make some good tackles and gain possession. Throughout the game, we began to counter attack down the left and right wing and we created a couple of chances of which we were unlucky not to score. As the score for Ormiston increased, our boys continued to play with true Sheldon spirit and attacked their

defence until the final whistle blew. I am confident that with more training sessions together we can achieve fantastic results. Year 6 Boys 3 v St John s 1 First match against St John s played at the Alpine Oval in Forest Lake was a success with the boys winning 3-1. Nick scored the first goal before half time. He and Max scored one goal each in the second half. Great defence and attacking by the whole team with Captain Johnny giving support and direction from the goal posts. Special recognition to Andy and Riley for their hard work and participation in the first game. Also to Johnny s mum who supplied the fruit and snake lollies. Looking forward to our next game against Ormiston Blue. Coach: Anita Fitzpatrick Year 5 9 v TSAC Red 0 A super effort for the Year 5 Soccer team on Saturday. Their first game together resulted in a 9-0 win with some of the players having never played a game before they were amazing! Many of the boys got to rotate positions giving them an opportunity to enhance their skills. Player of the Week was awarded to Joseph Maher, scoring multiple goals and was outstanding in defence. Great team effort and a fabulous start to the term! BASKETBALL MATCH REPORTS U9 Sky The first game in Term 3 and Summer Peupelmann was our shining star this week with a go get them attitude; Summer's ball skills have improved dramatically over the break. With two of our tall boys away the team did a fantastic job keeping the score difference as low as it was. Taylor Burrowes was on fire scoring 12 points with Sophie Wilks scoring 2. U9 Sky 20 v Carina Cobras 8 Round 13 was a win for Sky with Taylor shooting 10 points; Summer and Chase 4 points each and Sophia 2 points. Well done Sky! U13 Boys 57 v Carina Taipans 36 The boys (Brodie Blaser, Rhys Swanson, Lachlan Kelly, Keagan Forbes, Liam Forbes, Lachlan Andrews, Cooper Jones and Hayden McKillop) were against the fast, but smaller Carina Taipans. The Taipans have a couple of players who are fast, known to steal the ball and are quick to make the most of any opposition mistakes. It was a close first half with the lead changing several times. The Sheldon boys played well with good bounce passing in offence and getting the majority of the rebounds and were slightly ahead at half time 23 to the Taipans 21 points. In the second half the boys continued to play well as a team, coach Judy was able to make frequent rotations of players as the pace was fast and this took its toll on the Taipans who were relying on a couple of key players. The boys intensity enabled them to increase their lead throughout the second half and the boys finished with a convincing win. All the boys scored and played well as a team, proving that a good team will beat a team with good players. Well done.
