SCOOPS (Sheldon College Oracle for Optimal Performance in Sport) ISSUE 21: 11 SEPTEMBER 2015 Sports Office Contacts: Telephone (07) Facsimile (07) Wet Weather 1800 SHELDON For updated Sporting information, please visit SHELDON AT THE AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY 2015 Five Sheldon College runners represented the College and Queensland at the Australian Schools Cross Country Championships August29 in Melbourne, Victoria. Our athletes did themselves and Queensland very proud. We received a total of 4 National medals (1 GOLD and 5 SILVER medals). Well done!! The results were: MAX HOOPER - placed a credible 5th in the 11 years boys 3km Cross Country event (This is Maxy s 3rd top 5 performance at Nationals - OUTSTANDING). Due to Max s efforts his 11 years Queensland team won the silver medal for the teams points event and then a day later his relay team won the silver medal in the 4 x 1.5km relay. LACHLAN CORNELIUS - placed 6th with a huge run in the 11 years boys 3km Cross Country event. He was also part of the same teams as Max and also won two silver medals in the Teams event and the relays. This was Lachlan s first nationals as a Queenslander (having competed last year for NSW) - maroon does suit him! SHAUN EARP placed 6th (out of 70) in the U16s (14yrs and 15yrs) boys 4km Cross Country race. This is Shaun s fourth time at National Cross Country in the top 6 - fantastic effort. Due to Shaun s huge run his Queensland team won the gold medal for the team s points event.

JAMIE HISCOCK - placed 29th (out of 80) in the U16 years (14 and 15) girls 4km Cross Country race. She was 18th out of the 14yr old girls. With a solid relay leg, Jamie s relay team won the silver medal for the relays a day later. JOANNE MILLER - placed 32nd (out of 98) in the U18s (16yrs and 17yrs) girls 4km Cross Country race. 4 NETBALL GRAND FINALS Sheldon 5 41 v Thunderbolts 29 A letter from Miss Fin.. Dear Sheldon 5 Netballers Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your Grand Final experience and coach your team to a premiership, even if it was only game! You all united together at the start of your warm-up to encourage and motive each other to perform at your very best for the final game of the season. Knowing that what counts is your performance today and not has occurred throughout the season. This then became evident as you took the court, excited but yet a little bit nervous knowing that Mollie Harris was about to board a plane to Europe rather than being in the circle as our main goal scorer. Luckily we had Gabby, Liv and Jordy prepared and ready to fill her shoes. Rachel Howse and Ellie-Ann Green were little pocket rockets on the court, ensuring that we treasured the ball and lead the possession stats. Congratulations to Zoe, Jithya and Izzy who took a while to warm up in defence but once they knew the shooter s tactics, there was no stopping the tips, intercepts and rebounds. Overall, it was truly a team effort and a well-deserved win. Congratulations on winning the Grand Final against Thunderbolts You are all truly talented netballers and I can t wait to see you in action next year for Sheldon in the GBC Competition. Thank you once again for being such a wonderful team to coach and congratulations on a successful season. Love Mrs Powell

This is a photo of the Sheldon 1 Netball team coached by Sharon Bottomley. Sheldon 1 took out the B Grand Final last Saturday. JTAS BASKETBALL RESULTS JTAS Sheldon Year 4 Boys 34 v Ormiston College 0 Well it has been a great season for the Seahawks who have shown excellent teamwork and skill development across the term. The final game was played at home against Ormiston College; a team the boys had already encountered and put on a great display for a twenty point victory. This time round the boys were keen to show their home fans how far they had come. The scoring started slowly with the first quarter seeing a 5-0 lead to Sheldon and from there the boys didn t look back. Despite the Mercy Rule being brought in to play the lead quickly increased for the Seahawks who ran away with the game and an impressive 33-0 victory! It has been a pleasure to lead these fine young gentlemen throughout the season and my knowledge of the game of basketball has broadened immeasurably. Thank you to all the players and the parents for their efforts in making this term son enjoyable and fun for all. Here is a quick wrap up of each of the boys and their 2015 season. JOE BULL- What a talent; this player shows great assertiveness in defence and works hard under the basket to get every rebound back in the team s control. RHYS SWANSON- Although he only played two games for the team he is an impact player and a scoring machine. RIO MEARNS- New to the game and over the season made great gains in his defensive skills and was part of some crucial plays.

JACOB TELFORD- The lay-up king! He led the way on the scoresheet and showed great leadership with the new players. RIELLY CHAPMAN- Another newbie to the sport but quickly he showed attacking skill moving with the ball fluidly and making great contributions in defence. FLYNN GREEN- Straight from the get-go Flynn made a huge contribution the team all over the court. He showed great skill when attacking and it was great to see him taking on board the feedback from training in his game plan. WILLIAM REECE-ANDERSON- The last of the newcomers to the world of basketball but he also put in great amounts of effort to improve his defensive game play and loved the Seahawks team spirit. THOMAS KELLY- A seasoned professional who brought experience and leadership to the team which was invaluable with the variety of game time the boys all had. JTAS Sheldon Year 5 Boys 39 v Rivermount College 18 JTAS Sheldon Year 5 Girls 45 v Rivermount College 25 JTAS Sheldon Year 6 Boys 65 v Rivermount College 43 The last round of the JTAS competition had the Sheldon year 6 boys (Keagan Forbes, Liam Forbes, Hayden McKillop, Andrew Sultana and Jared Smith) playing Rivermount College. Both teams were undefeated leading into this last round and the Rivermount boys had some size to them; however the Sheldon team was too skilled and were able to outplay their opposition. The key to the Sheldon play was their strong defence and their ability to intercept the Rivermount passes. After 7 minutes Sheldon had been able to skip out to a 20 points to nil lead and from there on the boys played to the mercy rule and backed off on their defence. The mercy rule allowed for a more even game which was reflected in the final score. The boys were never really pressed during the JTAS competition and this is attributable to the excellent basketball program Sheldon has in place. Well done to all and the boys are looking forward to next year s TAS competition. JTAS Sheldon Year 6 Girls 84 v Rivermount College 18

GBC RESULTS Open Boys Basketball 35 v Rivermount College 35 Year 9 Soccer 3 v Rivermount College 6 1 st Touch Football 7 v Rivermount College 1 BASKETBALL MATCH RESULTS U13 Girls White 24 v Carina Pythons 15 Some great teamwork led to well-deserved victory this week! Player of the Week went to Alana Warner (2 points), who had a high-energy game that included some brilliant rebounds. Sommer Sylvester (9 points) had her best game of the season with a number of quick breaks. Ashley Edgar was relentless in defence, as was Brooklyn Dicinoski, who cleverly stole the ball on quite a few occasions. Special thanks to Erin Koster (13 points) for stepping in to play and helping the team to victory. Fantastic job, girls! U13 Boys Metro Navy 19 v Hoopstars 3 55 In the semi-final the boys (Jared Smith, Andrew Sultana, Keagan Forbes, Liam Forbes, Zander Zwolsman, Sam Macbeth, Kayden Swanson and Hayden McKillop) were up against the top of the table and undefeated Hoopstars 3. The game started as a closely contested game with neither team making it easy for the other. Hoopstars 3 were first to get points on the board, but Sheldon responded soon after and hit the lead early in the game. Hoopstars were able to get some unanswered baskets and some of the Sheldon shots danced around the rim before bouncing out. It doesn t take much with quality opposition for breaks to occur and Hoopstars 3 were able to skip out to a half time lead of 18 points to Sheldon s 8 points. The first 8 minutes of the second half was similar to the first half and Sheldon was still in the game at 18 points to Hoopstars 31 points, but for the reminder of the game it was all Hoopstars who were able to add 24 points where as Sheldon added one point. Hoopstars had a great run and although the Sheldon boys had their opportunities the baskets didn t drop and some of the passes were intercepted by Hoopstars. The final score did not reflect the effort and competitiveness by the Sheldon boys. However, as coach Judy said after the game the boys did a great job reaching the top four teams in the very tough Metro competition at Southern Districts Basketball Association (SDBA). From the beginning of the season the boys have transformed their game from a group of individuals to a team known by the opposition for their teamwork; their tenacity and giving it their all. Congratulations to the boys and many thanks to Coach Judy for being the driver of their transformation.

NETBALL MATCH REPORTS Sheldon 11 Sadly we played our last game on Saturday. Sheldon 11 have had a great season and we were very happy with our wonderful coaches. Chelsea and Emma were very organised and did lots of different drills with the girls each week. They were always encouraging and great role models for our girls. At our last training on Friday Lilly Montgomery fell over and fractured her arm. Lilly still came to the game on Saturday to show her support. Sheldon 11 is a lovely team with many beautiful girls in it like Lilly. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Basketball JTAS Sheldon Year 4 Boys Thomas Kelly U13 Girls White Alana Warner
