1 yinder with Lock Series S ø, ø, ø ocking cyinder idea for intermediate stops, emergency stops and drop prevention. Simpe construction force magnifying mechanism is empoyed based on the wedge effect of the taper ring and stee bas. θ Stee ba f R R aper ring igh ocking efficiency reater ocking efficiency as we as stabe ocking and unocking operation has been achieved by arranging a arge number of stee ba bearings in circuar rows. (Unocking pressure of. Pa.5 Pa ower than conventiona S products) In addition, both aignabiity and stabe ocking force with respect to piston rod eccentricity are obtained by aowing the taper ring to foat. P meta rod scraper Standard equipment Resistance against weding process spatter and other externa contaminants is achieved by providing a meta rod scraper as standard. anua override for unocking for emergency Even if the air suppy is bocked or exhausted, ock reease is possibe. he fai safe mechanism ocks again when the manua override is reeased. LJ L L L L S LS L RL LU LP L igh reiabiity and stabe hoding force Outstanding durabiity and stabe hoding force are maintained by the use of a brake shoe having superior wear resistance, which has aso been substantiay engthened (doube the conventiona S product). esign minimizes the infuences of unocking air quaity construction which is strong against moisture and drainage in the compressed air has been reaized by separating the ocking mechanism and the unocking chamber. 2 Series S ode Seection Precautions on ode Seection aution. In order that the originay seected maximum speed is not exceeded, be certain to use a speed controer to adjust the tota movement distance of the oad so that movement takes pace in no ess than the appicabe movement time. he movement time is the time that is necessary for the oad to trave the tota movement distance from the start without any intermediate stops.. In cases where the cyinder stroke and the movement distance of the oad are different (doube speed mechanism, etc.), use the movement distance of the oad for seection purposes. Exampe) ovement distance of oad W 3. he foowing seection exampe and procedures are based on use at the intermediate stop (incuding emergency stops during the operation). owever, when the cyinder is in the ocked state, kinetic energy does not act upon it. Under these conditions, use the oad mass at the maximum speed () of mm/s shown in graphs 5 to 7 on page 759 depending on the operating pressure and seect modes. 20 Series S Specific Product Precautions e sure to read before handing. Refer to front matters 4 and 43 for Safety Instructions and pages 3 to for ctuator and uto Switch Precautions. esign of Equipment and achinery Warning. onstruct so that the human body wi not come into direct contact with driven objects or the moving parts of the cyinders with ock. evise a safe structure by attaching protective covers that prevent direct contact with the human body, or in cases where there is a danger of contact, provide sensors or other devices to perform an emergency stop, etc., before contact occurs.. Use a baance circuit, taking cyinder urching into consideration. In cases such as an intermediate stop, where a ock is operated at a desired position within the stroke and air pressure is appied from ony one side of the cyinder, the piston wi urch at high speed when the ock is reeased. In such situations, there is a danger of causing human injury by having hands or feet, etc. caught, and aso a danger for causing damage to the equipment. In order to prevent this urching, a baance circuit such as the recommended pneumatic circuits (page 777) shoud be used. Seection Warning. When in the ocked state, do not appy a oad accompanied by an impact shock, strong vibration or turning force, etc. Use caution, because an externa action such as an impacting oad, strong vibration or turning force, may damage the ocking mechanism or reduce its ife.. onsider stopping accuracy and the amount of over-run when an intermediate stop is performed. ue to the nature of a mechanica ock, there is a momentary ag with respect to the stop signa, and a time deay occurs before stopping. he cyinder stroke resuting from this deay is the overrun amount. he difference between the maximum and minimum overrun amounts is the stopping accuracy. Pace a imit switch before the desired stopping position, at a distance equa to the overrun amount. he imit switch must have a detection ength (dog ength) of the overrun amount + α. S s auto switches have operating ranges from 8 to mm (depending on the switch mode). When the overrun amount exceeds this range, sef-hoding of the contact shoud be performed at the switch oad side. For stopping accuracy, refer to page 76. Seection Warning 3. In order to further improve stopping accuracy, the time from the stop signa to the operation of the ock shoud be shortened as much as possibe. o accompish this, use a device such as a highy responsive eectric contro circuit or soenoid vave driven by direct current, and pace the soenoid vave as cose as possibe to the cyinder. 4. ote that the stopping accuracy wi be infuenced by changes in piston speed. When piston speed changes during the course of the cyinder stroke due to variations in the oad or disturbances, etc., the dispersion of stopping positions wi increase. herefore, consideration shoud be given to estabishing a standard speed for the piston just before it reaches the stopping position. oreover, the dispersion of stopping positions wi increase during the cushioned portion of the stroke and during the acceerating portion of the stroke after the start of operation, due to the arge changes in piston speed. 5. he hoding force (max. static oad) indicates the maximum capabiity to hod a static oad without oads, vibration and impact. his does not indicate a oad that can be hed in ordinary conditions. Seect the most suitabe bore sizes for the operating conditions in accordance with the seection procedures. he ode Seection (pages 758 and 759) is based on use at the intermediate stop (incuding emergency stops during the operation). owever, when the cyinder is in a ocked state, kinetic energy does not act upon it. Under these conditions, use the oad mass at the maximum speed () of mm/s shown in the graphs 5 to 7 on page 759 depending on the operating pressure and seect modes. ounting Warning. e certain to connect the rod end to the oad with the ock reeased. If connected in the ocked state, a oad greater than the turning force or hoding force, etc. may operate on the piston rod and cause damage to the ock mechanism. Series S is equipped with an emergency unocking mechanism; however, when connecting the rod end to the oad, this shoud be done with the ock reeased. his can be accompished by simpy connecting an air ine to the unocking port and suppying air pressure of. Pa or more.. o not appy offset oads to the piston rod. Particuar care shoud be taken to match the oad s center of gravity with the center of the cyinder shaft. When there is a arge discrepancy, the piston rod may be subjected to uneven wear or damage due to the inertia moment during ocking stops. Stop signa 776 mount of overrun Load center of gravity and cyinder shaft center are not matched. Load center of gravity and cyinder shaft center are matched. ote) an be used if a of the generated moment is absorbed by an effective guide.

Pneumatic ircuit Warning. e certain to use an pneumatic circuit which wi appy baancing pressure to both sides of the piston when in a ocked stop. In order to prevent cyinder urching after a ock stop, when restarting or when manuay unocking, a circuit shoud be used to which wi appy baancing pressure to both sides of the piston, thereby canceing the force generated by the oad in the direction of piston movement.. Use a soenoid vave for unocking which has a arge effective area, as a rue 5% or more of the effective area of the cyinder drive soenoid vave. he arger the effective area is, the shorter the ocking time wi be (the overrun amount wi be shorter), and stopping accuracy wi be improved. 3.
