FACCS is delighted t ffer cmpetitins fr FACCS Member Elementary, Middle Schl, and High Schl and Hmeschl Grup students and individual hmeschlers. These cmpetitins are designed fr the purpse f allwing students t gain valuable experiences thrugh the prcess f cmpetitin and evaluatin. We want yur yung peple t develp their talents and have a platfrm fr their Gd-given abilities. Thank yu fr yur help and supprt in achieving this gal. Purpse f the Brain Bwl T enhance student develpment f pise and cmmunicatin under pressure. T prvide students with an utlet fr their Gd-given talents and abilities. T fster an attitude f academic challenge and a chance fr gifted students t excel thrugh quality Christian cmpetitin. T prvide an pprtunity fr students t meet and encurage students frm ther Christian schls and hmeschlers. Registratin & Fees FACCS cmpetitins are nly pen t students wh are enrlled in a FACCS r IACCS Member Schl r Hmeschl Grup and individual hmeschlers. Fr Member Schls/Hmeschl Grups, it is the schl s/grup s respnsibility t register students fr cmpetitin. Any registratin received frm a player separate frm the schl registratin will be declined. Fr individual hmeschlers, it is a parent s respnsibility t register hmeschlers fr cmpetitin. Any registratin received frm a hmeschler separate frm a parent registratin will be declined. Please fllw all registratin and entry deadlines. Due t scheduling and judging cnstraints, late registratin entries may nt be accepted. Fee structure will be determined by cmpetitin and membership status. Infrmatin regarding fees will be available at the time f registratin. ALL fees must be paid befre players will be permitted t cmpete. Cnduct Cde The cnduct f any player, schl representative, parent, r spectatr is expected t meet the standard f believers nted in I Timthy 4:12, "Let n man despise thy yuth. but be thu an example f the believers, in wrd, in cnversatin, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." Plite, curteus actins tward thers evidencing respect and Christian graces are expected at all times. Patience, kindness, and gd sprtsmanship will be the rule. 1

2 Students representing their Christian schl are als expected t evidence behavir befitting the testimny f their schl and Savir. This is true regarding the all aspects f the cmpetitin including rientatin. All players, spnsrs, parents, and ther persns assciated with a team are bund by an hnr cde t behave respnsibly and ethically. This includes, but is nt limited t: neither giving nr receiving impermissible assistance, nt creating the temptatin fr anther t cheat, abiding by all decisins f the cmpetitin staff, nt clluding with anther persn t "fix" a rund result, nt intentinally "thrwing" a rund, hnestly reprting details f rund situatins t the Crdinatr, and prmptly reprting vilatins f this hnr cde t the Crdinatr. Instances f miscnduct may result in sanctins t be determined by the Crdinatr. These sanctins include, but are nt limited t, suspensin f a player frm ne r mre runds, lss f rund(s) fr a team, scre r clck adjustment, r expulsin f an entire team frm the Brain Bwl. Sanctins are nt appealable. Dress Cde FACCS feels that players shuld adhere t the highest standards f Christian testimny, cmpetitin, and decrum. Therefre, students, spnsrs, and spectatrs are expected t dress apprpriately and mdestly fr all events related t this cmpetitin. Players shuld stay within the dress cde guidelines f the schl represented. Hmeschl students are expected t dress apprpriately fr each cmpetitin. Spnsrs and spectatrs are expected t dress apprpriately. Slppy, immdest, r inapprpriate dress are nt acceptable fr this cmpetitin (including baggy/slppy/immdest shrts r jeans, and flip-flps). The player will be asked t change clthing r risk disqualificatin. Supervisin It is the schl s respnsibility t prvide adequate supervisin fr their students at all times during any cmpetitin. Parents may be cnsidered as supervisrs; please be sure they are aware f all cmpetitin guidelines and expectatins fr supervisin. Each participating schl is als required t prvide the fllwing adult spnsrs t act as fficials each day f the cmpetitin: If ne (1) r tw (2) ttal teams are entered: tw (2) fficials If three (3) ttal teams are entered: three (3) fficials If fur (4) r mre ttal teams are entered: fur (4) fficials Descriptin f Event There are n reginal cmpetitins in this event, nly the state cmpetitin. This is a tw-day event fr High Schl teams; a ne-day event fr Middle Schl teams. 2

3 Each schl may enter up t: three (3) teams in the High Schl divisin; tw (2) teams in the Middle Schl divisin, and each schl is required t prvide the fllwing: ne (1) lck-ut buzzer system that has at least eight (8) ttal buzzers, ne (1) stpwatch (r its equivalent) ne (1) cmputer running MS Excel 2007 r higher tw (2) f each abve if three (3) r mre ttal teams are entered. Middle Schl Runds Teams play against each ther in a quiz bwl style cmpetitin - games are randmly assigned. Teams earn pints fr crrectly answering questins. Each team member als earns pints fr crrectly answering questins. High Schl Preliminary Runds: Teams play against each ther in a quiz bwl style cmpetitin - games are randmly assigned n day ne and assigned by rank n day tw. Teams earn pints fr crrectly answering questins. Each team member als earns pints fr crrectly answering questins. High Schl Finalist / Cnslatin Runds: Finalist Runds: the tp ten teams frm the High Schl Preliminary Runds play against each ther t determine Finalist Rund winners. Cnslatin Runds: the remaining teams frm the High Schl Preliminary Runds cmpete against each ther t determine Cnslatin Rund winners. Schedule The general schedule fr the High Schl Brain Bwl is: Day One: Preliminary Runds Check-in and rientatin will be held befre the High Schl Preliminary Runds. All High Schl teams will play in the High Schl Preliminary Runds. Day Tw: Finalist and Cnslatin Runds All teams frm the Preliminary Runds will play in the Finalist r Cnslatin Runds based n ranking frm Day One. The general schedule fr the Middle Schl Brain Bwl is: Day One: Check-in and rientatin will be held befre the Middle SchlRunds. All Middle Schl teams will play in the Middle Schl Runds. There is n Day Tw fr Middle Schl divisin. A specific schedule will be released within tw weeks f the event. Eligibility f Participants This cmpetitin is designed fr students in grades 6-12 wh are enrlled in a FACCS/IACCS Member Schl r Hmeschl Grup and fr individual preregistered hmeschlers. 3

4 Member Schl / Hmeschl Grups Each schl/hmeschl grup is permitted t enter up t three (3) High Schl teams and tw (2) Middle Schl teams. Frm here n in this manual, the term schl will als apply t a hmeschl grup. Hmeschlers Fr the purpse f FACCS cmpetitins, a hmeschler is ne: wh is nt enrlled full-time in any type f schl (Christian, private, charter, public, nline, r distance learning) fr academic purpses, whse parent r guardian has registered with the lcal schl district hme schl educatin ffice, and wh is nt enrlled in a FACCS/IACCS Member Schl r Hmeschl Grup. Hmeschlers are required t fllw the registratin and payment prcedures, cnduct cde, dress cde, supervisin requirements, and eligibility fr multiple-entry guidelines fr each cmpetitin. Fr this cmpetitin, a hmeschler may enter Middle Schl divisin if he/she is f standard middle schl age: student is eleven (11) t thirteen (13) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year (September 1 st - July 1 st ). High Schl divisin if he/she is f standard high schl age: student is furteen (14) t seventeen (17) years ld n Sept. 1 f the active schl year. Individual hmeschlers will register and will be placed n a team f three (3) t fur (4) members n a first cme, first served basis until a maximum f tw (2) High Schl and tw (2) Middle Schl teams are filled. Awards High Schl Divisin Preliminary Runds: trphies will be awarded t the tp ten (10) teams that qualify t advance t the Finalist Runds. Finalist and Cnslatin Runds: plaques and/r ribbns are awarded t the schl and each team member fr first, secnd and third place teams. Individual awards: (based n individual answers f Tss Up Questins nly) Plaques and cash awards fr the tp three individual High Schl scrers fr the entire cmpetitin. Plaque fr the tp individual screr frm High Schl Finalist and High Schl Cnslatin runds. Trphy fr the tp screr frm each schl fr each divisin (Middle and High Schl). Middle Schl divisin Plaques and/r ribbns are awarded t the schl and each team member fr first, secnd and third place teams. 5 Cmpetitin Manuals Players are t fllw all f the guidelines as stated in this manual. There will be revisins frm time t time in prcedures and expectatins. All schls, parent educatrs, crdinatrs, fficials, and judges will be made aware f the manual versin (see tp f page) that will be used fr each cmpetitin. Manuals fr all FACCS cmpetitins are available separately at Cmpetitin Rulings All FACCS cmpetitin crdinatrs, fficials, and judges are aware f cmpetitin rules and regulatins and are empwered t make decisins as needed. Any/all rulings r decisins made by crdinatrs, fficials, r judges are final. Questins If yu have any questins abut the cmpetitin, please cntact the belw individuals fr answers. Fllwing this rder will help yu get the answers yu need in a timely manner. 1. Yur Schl Cmpetitin Crdinatr - call yur schl 2. FACCS Office f Prgram Services - visit fr cntact infrmatin Brain Bwl Prcedures Teams Each team cnsists f three (3) t six (6) members; hwever n mre than fur (4) and n less than three (3) members may play in each game. Each team will elect a Team Captain fr each game. Team players can be substituted fr anther team player between games, but nt during a game. If a schl has mre than ne team, thse teams must remain separate and distinct as registered thrughut the cmpetitin. i.e. n team switching. Middle Schl students may participate n a High Schl team fr Day Tw f cmpetitin, hwever: they must be registered with a High Schl team they must be registered with bth a High Schl and Middle Schl team if participating with bth they may jin the team n Day Tw with which he/she was registered. they may participate with the High Schl team in runds in which n Middle Schl game is scheduled n Day One. they will cunt tward the minimum/maximum team members permitted n a team. Games All games shuld begin at the scheduled time and will prceed with thse players wh are present and ready t play. Try t be present in the rm a few minutes befre each game is scheduled t begin. If a team fails t appear fr a game after five (5) minutes frm the start time as indicated by the Mderatr, the present team will be presented the questins in rder. If an entire team r player enters the rm after the game has begun, they r he may still jin the game upn the next Tss Up Questin, but n attempt will be made t update the team r the player. 5

6 Players must wear their name tags t each game and display them s that they may be seen by the Mderatr and Screkeeper. If a questin is raised abut anything at the end f a game, the teams will need t remain at their tables, cnverse with n ne except their teammates, and wait fr the issue t be addressed by the Mderatr. At the end f each game, the teams are t remain in their rms until the runner returns with the rm envelpe and the Mderatr dismisses the teams t the next game. Questins Questins will cver the fllwing tpics: English, math, literature, histry, music, gegraphy, art, peple, news, trivia, mythlgy, science, current events, and sprts. Many questins will include secular cntent, but will be filtered fr apprpriateness. Questins will cme frm an un-circulated set f quiz bwl questins btained by FACCS frm a reputable quiz-bwl questin preparatin cmpany. - There are tw types f questins that will be asked by the Mderatr. The Tss Up Questin: ten (10) pints each. There are fifteen (15) Tss Up Questins per rund (this number may change t accmmdate scheduling issues if necessary) Any player frm either team may answer the Tss Up Questin by buzzing in. All players must remve their hands frm the buzzers befre the Tss Up Questin is asked. Exceptin: when a lck-ut system is used that has handheld buzzers, players may hld the buzzer. The Mderatr will read the Tss Up Questin. Bth teams are given the five (5) secnds frm the time the questin ends t activate the buzzer fr an pprtunity t answer. Exceptin: ten (10) secnds fr all math calculatin questins. If n player activates their buzzer within the five secnds t attempt the answer, the Mderatr will give the answer and mve t the next Tss Up Questin. Answering a Tss Up Questin. N cmmunicatin f any kind is permitted by either team n Tss Up Questins. This includes any bdily mtin (i.e. headnd, finger-pint, etc.) t indicate which player shuld answer a questin. Only ne (1) team player (the ne wh buzzes-in first) will be permitted t answer the Tss Up Questin. The player shuld nt attempt t answer the questin until called upn by name by the Mderatr. If the player answers the questin befre being called upn by name, he r she will be issued ne (1) warning by the Mderatr. 6

7 Three (3) such infractins in a game will disqualify the player frm the rest f the game He/she may be replaced by anther team player. N part f the questin will be repeated by the Mderatr. Once the Mderatr calls n a team player t answer, he/she has five (5) secnds t begin the answer. The questin must be cmpletely answered within five (5) secnds after starting t answer. Exceptin: spelling questins will receive ten (10) secnds t answer the questin. If a crrect answer is given by a player, the team will then be ffered a Bnus Questin (see explanatin belw). If an incrrect answer is given r the player fails t start r cmplete the answer within the time limits: the ppsing team receives the questin withut it being repeated by the Mderatr. the ppsing team has 5 secnds t buzz in, 5 secnds t begin the answer, and 5 secnds t cmplete the answer with the previusly mentined exceptins. If neither team answers the Tss Up Questin crrectly, the Mderatr will give the crrect answer, then mve t the next Tss Up Questin. If the Mderatr is interrupted by a buzzer f a player n either team while asking the Tss Up Questin, that team player will be recgnized and permitted t answer withut hearing the rest f the questin. If the answer is crrect, the team will be ffered the Bnus Questin. If the answer is incrrect, five (5) penalty pints will be deducted frm the scre f the ffending team scre, and the Mderatr will read the entire questin and the ppsing team will be given an pprtunity t answer within the abve time limit guidelines. If tw (2) buzzers and lights are activated simultaneusly (very rare), the Mderatr will ask bth players t write ut the answer t the questin. If bth answers are crrect, bth teams and bth players will receive pints and will be given the chance t respnd t the Bnus Questin in writing. The Bnus Questin: Up t twenty (20) pints. This questin is a multiple respnse questin that is ffered t the team that crrectly answers a Tss Up Questin. Cnference within a team is permitted in rder t btain crrect answers t the Bnus Questin. Once the Mderatr has cmpletely read the Bnus Questin tw (2) times, the team will have twenty (20) secnds t cnfer. At the end f the 20 secnds, the Mderatr will call TIME and the Team Captain, r his/her designee, must immediately list their answers 7

8 Crrect Answers in the same rder as the questins were given. Only answers given by the Team Captain r designated player will be accepted. List answers that dn t require a specific rder will be accepted as crrect regardless f rder given (see belw). The first answer given by the Team Captain r designated player will be the answer the Mderatr accepts. The team may begin cnferring at any time while the questin is being read the secnd time thrugh by the Mderatr. If cnferring begins during the first reading, the Mderatr will stp reading immediately and the team will be given the standard time t cnfer and answer frm that pint. Fr crrect answers, the team will be awarded Bnus pints. Only team pints are awarded fr Bnus Questins. Parts f the questin answered incrrectly r nt answered within the time limit will nt be cunted against the team scre. T receive credit fr Tss Up and Bnus Questins, respnses must indicate accurate and unambiguus knwledge f the crrect answer. Accuracy requires nly minimal infrmatin fr mst answers. i.e. acceptable minimal infrmatin is underlined: Gerge Washingtn; On the Origin f Species by Means f Natural Selectin. Players wh give accurate but ambiguus respnses may be prmpted by the Mderatr fr mre infrmatin t clarify if needed. i.e. a player answers Bush, when the answer sught is Gerge W. Bush the Mderatr may say, Please give the full name. Fr Tss Up Questins, nly the first answer given will be accepted by the Mderatr. Any additinal infrmatin given by a player fllwing the answer will be ignred, unless attempting t clarify an ambiguus respnse as prmpted by the Mderatr. If a player attempts t clarify a perceived ambiguus respnse withut the prmpting f the Mderatr and supplies additinal, but incrrect, infrmatin, the answer will be cnsidered incrrect. i.e. if the questin is Wh was the president assassinated in 1963? the acceptable answer is Kennedy. Hwever, if the player answers Kennedy... Rbert then it is cnsidered incrrect. Game Scring Fr Bnus Questins, nly the first answer given per part will be accepted by the Mderatr. answers must be listed in the same rder as the questins were given. List answers that dn t require a specific rder will be accepted as crrect regardless f rder given i.e List five cities in Flrida. At the end f each game, an unfficial scre will be annunced, hwever, this scre will nt be fficial until cnfirmed by the Crdinatr at Brain Bwl Central. 8

9 Challenges Each Team Captain will be asked t review the scre sheet and initial it next t the team scre (r verbally indicate agreement if electrnic scring) t verify accuracy f pints awarded t individual players, fr Bnus Questins, Penalties, and final team scre in a game. If there is a discrepancy nted by Team Captain, it shuld be handled with the Mderatr and Screkeeper befre sending the scre sheet t Brain Bwl Central. A Team Captain may challenge the: answer t a questin given by either his team r the ther team, r interpretatin f the rules by the Mderatr. Time Out - any team player may initiate a challenge with their Team Captain by calling Time Out. Each team will be alltted tw (2) Time Outs per game t allw players t discuss a ptential challenge with the Team Captain. Time Out must be called by any active player befre the first wrd f the next questin has been read by the Mderatr. Once acknwledged, the team will have five (5) secnds t discuss whether r nt t challenge. At the end f the Time Out, the Team Captain must either issue the challenge r indicate n challenge will be issued. Spectatrs, alternate players, r spnsrs in the rm may NOT participate in the Time Out r challenge discussin. When a team has used up bth f their Time Outs, challenges can still be issued by the Team Captain, but discussin amng the grup is nt permitted prir t issue. These time uts d nt carry ver frm game t game. The challenge, cmplete with questin number, must be written ut and sent t Brain Bwl Central in the rm envelpe by a runner fr review by the Crdinatrs. Cmpetitin will cntinue with the next Tss Up Questin until the respnse is received frm the Crdinatrs. If the challenge is nt upheld by the Crdinatrs, five (5) Penalty pints will be deducted frm the scre f the challenging team. Decisins f the Crdinatrs are final. Penalties Penalties are levied fr the fllwing reasns: Interrupting a Tss-Up Questin befre it is cmpletely read by the Mderatr and answering it incrrectly, and issuing ANY challenge that is nt upheld by the Crdinatrs, Penalties are recrded as five (5) pints deducted frm the final scre f the ffending team in that game. Spectatrs/Spnsrs Althugh spectatrs and spnsrs are welcme t bserve, they must nt interfere with the game in any way. Fr this reasn, we ask ALL spnsrs and spectatrs t refrain frm talking, applauding, eating, r drinking in the rms. 9

10 Spectatrs/spnsrs shuld als dress mdestly and apprpriately. Cmmunicatin, verbal r nn-verbal, between the players and any spectatr/spnsr will nt be permitted. N ne will be permitted t enter r leave a rm nce a game has begun with the exceptin f a runner r a late player. Spectatrs/spnsrs may nt initiate r issue a challenge r cntribute t a challenge discussin in any way. This will be strictly enfrced! The Mderatr may ask a spectatr/spnsr t leave a game anytime these plicies are vilated r if his/her behavir is disruptive. While it is permissible fr alternate/extra players wh are nt actively engaged in a game t watch, if they are being disruptive they will be asked t leave the rm by the Mderatr r Crdinatrs. If there is an ver-abundance f spectatrs, the Mderatr r Crdinatrs may limit the number f spectatrs in a rm. Miscellaneus Paper, pencils, and cpies f the rules may be in the pssessin f players during a game. Other reference materials, including mbile phnes, tablets, calculatrs, rulers, cmpasses, prtractrs, r slide rules will NOT be permitted. All cell phnes must be turned OFF during a game. D nt set n vibrate as that will still disrupt cmpetitin with the small size f rms. N vice recrders r vide cameras are permitted in the cmpetitin rms. 10
