The Giants posted a 3-3 record on their recently-completed homestand. After picking-up just one victory in three games versus Lancaster last weekend, San Jose won two out of three against Bakersfield in a series that ended yesterday afternoon. The Giants took the first two games from the Blaze by the scores of 4-3 and 9-1 on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively before the Blaze avoided the sweep with a 4-2 victory yesterday. In the series finale, San Jose scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the potential winning run at the plate with two outs before seeing their late rally fall short. Adam Duvall (2-for-4, SB) and Dan Burkhart (2-for-4) had two singles each to lead the offense, however the Giants were hitless in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base. Starting pitcher Jack Snodgrass took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. Winning Ways Despite yesterday s defeat, the Giants have won 11 out of their last 16 games dating back to July 29. During the stretch, San Jose has batted.299 as a team, averaged 7.3 runs per game and hit 23 homers. The Giants haven t suffered back-to-back losses since July Duvall Ties Single-Season Home Run Record Third baseman Adam Duvall hit his 26th homer of the year on August 8 in Stockton to tie the San Jose Giants single-season home run record (Tim Flaherty, 26 home runs in 2001). Duvall homered in five consecutive games (six home runs total) from August 3-8. He s clubbed 10 home runs over his last 20 games, but none in his last seven contests since tying the record. Playoff Race The Giants (64-58) enter tonight s action with a six-game lead over the Visalia Rawhide (58-64) for the wild card playoff spot in the North Division. San Jose s second half record is three games behind the first-place Modesto Nuts (29-23) in the North Division. Including tonight, the Giants have 18 games remaining in the regular season. Giants In The Cal League Rankings Adam Duvall is currently tops in the California League in home runs (26), fourth in runs scored (87) and sixth in RBI s (85). Ricky Oropesa ranks fifth in RBI s (86) while Joe Panik is ninth in hits (134). Pitchers Taylor Rogers and Jack Snodgrass are tied for second in wins (10). As a team, the Giants are fourth in the league in runs scored (5.3 per game) and fourth in ERA (4.65). San Jose is also tops in shutouts (9) while the pitching staff has allowed the fewest home runs (83) in the league. Panik Surges In Second Half Shortstop Joe Panik is batting.332 with five home runs and 39 RBI s in the second half (48 games) after hitting at a.257 clip with two homers and 30 RBI s during the first half (66 games). The former first round draft pick is also batting.404 (42-for-104) over his last 26 games. Panik leads the Giants in hits (134) and doubles (25 tied) while he s the second-toughest player to strikeout in the California League (one every 11.0 at-bats). Home/Road Comparison The Giants have hit considerably better on the road this season (.278 AVG, 6.6 runs per game) compared to at home (.252 AVG, 4.1 runs per game). San Jose has won six out of their last seven road games. RBI Leaders Ricky Oropesa (86), Adam Duvall (85) and Joe Panik (69) are first, second and third respectively in the San Francisco Giants farm system in RBI s. Record-Setting First Half Championship Streak Ends San Jose concluded the first half with a record and in second place in the North Division. It marked the first time since 2004 that the Giants didn t win the first half North Division crown. San Jose finished three games behind the Bakersfield Blaze (41-29) for the top spot. The Giants had won a California League record seven straight first half North Division titles ( ). The previous league record for consecutive first half championships was three (Visalia Oaks, ). After sweeping Bakersfield in a series that ended on May 26, San Jose owned a 5 1/2 game lead in the standings over the Blaze with 21 games remaining. However, the Giants went just 6-15 to finish the half, including a 10-game losing streak from May 27-June 5. San Jose now needs to win either the second half North Division title or secure the wild card to extend their streak of consecutive playoff appearances to nine seasons ( ). Today s Opponent: Stockton Ports The Stockton Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, are currently in the second half 10 games behind the Modesto Nuts for the top spot in the North Division.
