San Jose dropped two out of three games to the visiting Inland Empire 66ers in their most recent series. The Giants won a 9-4 decision last Saturday before the 66ers snapped San Jose s 11-game winning streak with an 11-9 triumph on Sunday. In the series rubber game Monday night, Inland Empire pulled out a 6-4, 12-inning victory. Ryan Cavan hit a two-run home run for the Giants in the bottom of the ninth to force extra-innings before the 66ers plated two runs in the top of the 12th for the win. Tommy Joseph had three hits and two RBI s to lead San Jose offensively. The Giants left 14 runners on base, including 12 in the first five innings. Ari Ronick, who allowed both 12th inning runs, suffered the loss. San Jose Looks To Avoid Rare Losing Streak The Giants need a victory this evening to avoid only their third three-game losing streak of the season. San Jose lost three straight from April before suffering six consecutive losses to begin the second half (June 23-29). Despite defeats in their last two games, the Giants have won 11 out of In A Row Versus The Blaze San Jose has won 12 consecutive games against the Bakersfield Blaze dating back to May 8. Overall, the Giants are 13-1 versus the Blaze this season. San Jose has won six out of seven games at Sam Lynn Ballpark. The teams last met from July 7-10 with the Giants sweeping a four-game series at Municipal Stadium. San Jose has outscored Bakersfield by a margin this season. July Offensive Surge The Giants have hit.292 as a team this month - the highest July batting average in the California League. Individually, James Simmons (.333, 17-for-51, 5 HR, 9 RBI) and Tommy Joseph (.309, 21-for-68, 5 HR, 18 RBI) have been San Jose s top hitters this month. The Giants are 12-5 in July as they bid for their fourth consecutive winning month this season (15-8 April, 22-7 May, June). Tied For The Best Record In Minor League Baseball San Jose (64-30) is currently tied with the Double-A San Antonio Missions of the Texas League (64-30) for the best record among full-season teams in all of Minor League Baseball. Westcott Named Cal League Pitcher Of The Week Craig Westcott was named California League Pitcher of the Week after picking-up his league-leading 11th win of the season last Friday in Visalia. In his only start last week, Westcott tossed a careerhigh eight innings with just four hits and one unearned run allowed. He walked none and struck out three. Westcott is the fourth Giants pitcher to win the weekly award this season joining Chris Heston (May 9-16), David Mixon (May 31-June 6) and Kelvin Marte (June 7-13). Joseph Recovers From Slow Start At the end of May, catcher Tommy Joseph was batting only.211 with four home runs. Beginning on June 1, Joseph has hit.302 with 16 doubles, seven home runs and 29 RBI s (38 games). Stephen Harrold Joins Bullpen; Lively And Lofgren Promoted Relief pitcher Stephen Harrold was added to the Giants roster today from Low-A Augusta. In 38 appearances with the GreenJackets, Harrold fashioned a 1.54 ERA to go with a 4-3 record and 16 saves. The South Atlantic League All-Star struck out 39 batters in 41 innings while holding the opposition to a.200 batting average. In other roster moves, Mitch Lively (3-3, 1.46 ERA, 8 SV) and Chuck Lofgren (2-0, 3.68 ERA, 1 SV) have been promoted to Double-A Richmond. Seventh Consecutive First Half North Division Title The Giants have won their California League record seventh consecutive first half North Division title ( ). San Jose has posted a first half record 12 1/2 games ahead of the second-place Stockton Ports (38-32). By virtue of winning the division crown, the Giants clinch a spot in the playoffs and earn a first round bye. San Jose will open the postseason on Saturday, September 10 with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series at Municipal Stadium. The Giants will also host Game Two of the series on Sunday, September 11. Prior to San Jose s current run, the California League record for consecutive first half division titles was three (Visalia). Even with the second half of the season already started, the Giants still officially have one game remaining in the first half. Due to the rainout on June 3, San Jose will play a doubleheader against the Visalia Rawhide this Sunday, July 24 at Municipal Stadium (4:00 PM start).
