Cucamonga leads series 1-0) Championship Series Game 2 Tonight The San Jose Giants and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes meet in Game 2 of the best-of-five California League Championship Series this evening at LoanMart Field. Jordan Johnson (2-3, 4.31) is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants in tonight s game. The Quakes lead the series one-game-to-none after a 12-3 thrashing of San Jose yesterday. Following tonight s contest, the series shifts to San Jose for Game 3 tomorrow and Games 4 and 5 on Sunday and Monday (if necessary). Blowout Loss The 12 runs allowed by the Giants last night was their most surrendered since a 12-2 defeat on May 28 at High Desert. San Jose allowed 10+ runs in a game just once during the second half + postseason before yesterday (13-2 loss at Stockton on August 17). The seven runs given up in the bottom of the sixth yesterday matched the most runs allowed by the Giants in an inning this year. Elimination Games The Giants have posted a 4-0 record in elimination games this postseason. San Jose outlasted Stockton in a 15-inning marathon in the decisive third game of the North Mini Series on September 11. The Giants then fell behind 0-2 to Visalia in the North Division Series before notching three straight victories. San Jose posted back-to-back 5-4 walk-off wins over the Rawhide last Monday and Tuesday (13 innings) before a 6-5, 11-inning triumph in Game 5 on Wednesday. Top Postseason Performers First baseman Angel Villalona leads the Giants in home runs (4) and RBI s (9) during the postseason. Villalona hit a walk-off solo homer in the 13th inning of Game 4 against Visalia last Tuesday before slugging a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 11th of Game 5 the next night. DH Brian Ragira (.370, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and catcher Aramis Garcia (.346, 2 HR, 5 RBI) own the top two individual batting averages during the playoffs. Versus The Quakes San Jose went 6-1 against Rancho Cucamonga during the regular season. The Giants swept a fourgame series at Municipal Stadium from May before taking two out of three at LoanMart Field from August Championship History The Giants are in the playoffs for the 11th time in the last 12 years. San Jose missed the postseason last year after reaching the playoffs in a league-record 10 consecutive seasons from Over their 28- year history, the San Jose Giants have won six championships (1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010). The Giants are in the Championship Series for the 11th time in the last 21 seasons. It s their first Championship Series appearance since 2013 (swept by Inland Empire). Regular Season Review The Giants finished the regular season with a record and qualified for the playoffs as the second Wild Card team out of the North Division. San Jose finished the first half at and in fourth place in the North Division. The Giants then went in the second half tied for first with Visalia (Rawhide owned the tiebreaker). League-Leading Pitching Staff San Jose boasted the lowest team ERA in the California League this season at The Giants were also first in the league in strikeouts (1,345 led all of MiLB) and shutouts (15). The San Jose pitching staff set a team record for strikeouts in a single-season (previous record: 1,282 strikeouts in 2013). Strong Finish San Jose s record since July 1 was tops in the California League. The Quakes overcame an early 2-0 deficit scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game before taking control of the contest with a seven-run sixth. Paul Hoenecke, Tyler Ogle and Jared Scavuzzo each homered to lead a 14-hit Rancho Cucamonga offensive outburst. San Jose starter Martin Agosta suffered the loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Chuckie Jones (2-for- 3, HR, 2 RBI) had two hits, including an early two-run home run, to pace the Giants offense in defeat. At The Plate The Giants 594 runs scored this year (4.2 per game) established a new team record for fewest runs in a single-season (previous low: 600 runs in 1989). San Jose ranked eighth in the league in batting average (.256) and ninth in runs scored. Giant Bullpen Since July 1, the Giants bullpen owned a stellar 2.38 ERA. Closer Jake Smith finished the regular season tied for fourth in the league in saves (16) and ninth in strikeouts (118 tops among relievers).
