WHERE THERE'S A WOOD, THERE'S A WAY: Southpaw starter Travis Wood's 18 career starts against the Cardinals are the most he has made against any club...in his four starts at Petco Park this season, Wood is 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA (4 ER, 22.1 IP), limiting opposing hitters to a.210 average...wood has also tossed quality starts in six of his eight career starts at Petco, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.19 ERA (12 ER, 49.1 IP). HOMERIN' HURLERS: Travis Wood hit his 11th career home run in his last start on August 30 vs. SF...he now has 10 regular season home runs, which tie for third-most with the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright among active pitchers...wood's teammate, Clayton Richard, homered four days earlier on August 27 at MIA, marking the first time in Padres history that two hurlers combined for two homers in a four-game span (ELIAS). WHAT A RELIEF: In four games against the Cardinals this season, the Padres bullpen has not allowed more than a single run in a game, combining for a 1.42 ERA (2 ER, 12.2 IP)...in those four games, the Padres have struck out 18 Cardinals, allowed only two extra-base hits and held St. Louis bats to a.209 average. THE 'PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD: In their last 21 games (since August 13), Padres relievers have held opposing bats to a.191 average, which is the best mark in baseball...in that time, the 'pen has posted a 2.69 ERA (20 ER, 67.0 IP), which ranks as the second-best mark in the majors, trailing only the Dodgers bullpen's 2.49 ERA. WIL TO HIT: INF Wil Myers has logged three consecutive multi-hit efforts for the first time this season (last: August 3-6, 2016)...his longest multi-hit game streak is seven games, set from July 13-26, yesterday, he tallied his 30th multi-hit game of 2017, which is the second-most on the club behind Margot s 33 this homestand, Myers is batting.400 (10-for-25) with two doubles, a triple and three RBI. WORKING FAST: Yesterday's 2 hour and 23 minute game tied for the fifth-shortest game the Padres have played this season...on average, the Padres have played their home games in 2 hours and 55 minutes...they are the only team in the Majors this season to play their home games (on average) in under three hours. WE'RE GOING LIVE: On Friday, September 8, the Padres game in Arizona against the Diamondbacks will be the Padres first Facebook Live broadcast...the feed from Fox Sports Arizona feed will be used. PCL CROWN: Today, OF Nick Buss was awarded the 2017 Pacific Coast League batting title, becoming the first El Paso Chihuahuas player to lead the PCL in hitting...the 30-year-old collected 123 hits in 353 at-bats, hitting buss had 39 multi-hit games in 114 games played, including nine contests of three-or-more hits. Buss is in his 10th professional season with his fifth organization, and he was named the Chihuahuas only mid-season All-Star. PADRES ON DECK: The minor league regular season ended Monday with three Padres affiliates headed to the playoffs starting Wednesday...the pitching staffs of three Padres affiliates broke their respective leagues single-season records for strikeouts...san Antonio had 1,186, Fort Wayne had 1,307 and Short-Season Single-A Tri-City had 764 strikeouts. Triple-A El Paso won a third straight Pacific Coast League Pacific Southern Division title and are the defending PCL champions. Double-A San Antonio swept both the first and second-half Southern division titles in the Texas League...the club won the Texas League ERA title with a 3.28 mark. Single-A Fort Wayne claimed a Midwest League playoff berth with a second half. DATES IN PADRES HISTORY: On September 5, 1997, RHP Andy Ashby pitched 8.0 no-hit innings before Kenny Lofton led off the ninth with a single to right on a full-count... Ashby allowed two runs on two hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game, 3-2 win in Mission Valley. On September 6, 1990, Bip Roberts hit a three-run, walk-off homer with two out in the 10th to give the Padres a 3-0 victory over HOU at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
