C Hector Sanchez belted his eighth home run of the season, and he has now hit safely in 10 of his 12 starts, batting.333 (16-for-48) with three doubles and five home runs. WELCOME TO THE GROUNDER GAMES: Southpaw starter Clayton Richard has induced a National-League leading 279 ground balls, trailing only TOR Marcus Stroman s his 58.5 ground ball percentage leads the NL and is second-best in the Majors behind Stroman s 63.5 percentage...richard has forced 23 ground-ball double plays this season, which ranks first in the NL and tied for second in the Majors with TEX Martin Perez, behind only Stroman s 27. QUITE THE CAREER: Today, veteran RHP Jered Weaver announced that he has retired from Major League Baseball, following a playing career that spanned 12 seasons...weaver, 34, posted a record with a 3.63 ERA (833 ER, IP), 1,621 strikeouts and a.244 (1912-for-7839) opponent batting average over 331 games, all starts...the three-time All-Star ( ) spent 11 seasons with the Angels and his.617 winning percentage ranks second in Angels franchise history. DON'T LOOK NOW, HE'S STREAKING: INF Cory Spangenberg has hit home runs in three consecutive games for the first time in his career, and he is riding a seven-game hitting streak (the longest active streak on the team), hitting.444 (12-for-27) with two doubles, one triple, four home runs, 10 RBI, a.483 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage...he has recorded multiple hits in each of his last four games, tying his career-high (3x; last: July 19-22, 2017). Spangenberg needs one hit to tie his career-high hitting streak, done twice in his career (last: July 16-23, 2017). RUNS FOR RICHARD: Among pitchers with at least innings pitched this season, Clayton Richard's 3.47 run support average (runs scored while he is in the game) is the lowest in the Majors, and his 56 total runs of support are the fewest in the Majors (the mark being 10 fewer than the next closest hurler, Dodgers RHP Yu Darvish s 66)...Richard looks to snap his streak of having been saddled with the loss in his last four starts at Petco Park... opponents are hitting.323 against Richard so far this season, which, among qualifying players, is the highest average in the Majors. PADRES ON DECK: On Tuesday night, LHP MacKenzie Gore, the Padres first-round pick in the June draft, gave up three hits and a walk with six strikeouts in 4.0 scoreless innings in the Arizona Rookie League. 3B Hudson Potts went 3-for-4 with his 14th homer for Single-A Fort Wayne. 2B Chase d Arnaud and 3B Ryan Schimpf both hit solo homers and CF Travis Jankowski went 3-for-4 as Triple-A El Paso defeated Albuquerque 4-2. DATES IN PADRES HISTORY: On August 16,1996, the Padres beat the Mets in the opener of a three-game series in Monterrey, Mexico..it was the first regular-season, Major League game ever played outside the United States and Canada...Mexican native Fernando Valenzuela was credited with the win, and Steve Finley, Ken Caminiti, John Flaherty and Greg Vaughn all homered for the Padres...on August 16, 2012, in a unanimous vote, Major League owners approve the transfer of the Padres from John Moores to an ownership group headed by local businessman Ron Fowler and lead financier Peter Seidler.
