Trask, '52 YE GAD, WHAT AN AD One the advertsements we prnted a few weeks ago ha's come home to roost wth an nterestng comment typed on t. A large ad for ucky Strke cgarettes, torn, out an old copy The Tech, reached our fce the other day wth a notaton to the effect that we were snkng morally pretty low n prntng t and askng whether there wasn't any censorshp our advertsng copy. The comment was sgned, "An M..T. Matron." The ad depcted a bosomy grl n two pece bathng sut sttng oh the shoulders a young man who gave the mpresson that he wags standng on a lagoon n a par water sks. Ths neat balancng trck was made even neater because both - the prncpals were smokng cgarettes (by mplcaton, uckes). Beyond doubt, the pcture stretched good taste close to ts elastc lmt; someone scrbbled below the capton, "uckes' fne tobacco... calm you down when you're tense," on the crtcal copy n the fce the comment, "Ths ad makes me...-tense." As far as advertsng censorshp s concerned, however, t s non-exstent on ths paper. ke all ads not local orgn, ths one reached us through the Natonal Advertsng Servce, an agency whch handles the majorty college newspaper accounts n the country. t would be very dffcult ndeed to turn down any natonal ad wthout alenatng ths mportant source ncome. Actually, there s no a pror censorshp exercsed over the paper by any admnstraton or faculty representatves; whatever appears n these pages s the responsblty someone on the staff. Apparently the ucky Strke people beleve that they can attract the attenton, college men to ther product by employng the old come-on sex. The Amercan Tobacco Company s not alone n ths belef, however; perusal ' almost any magazne wll reveal' a large percentage advertsements wth varyng degrees sex appeal. The ad we ran was no more dstasteful than many these. f advertsers are really carryng matters too far, about the only thng senstve people can do -s ether put up wth the stuaton or let the advertsers know ther dsapproval by boycottng ther products. n the cold, gray dawn--or s t afternoon- Sunday, t stll seems as though t were a pretty good weekend. The Tech Sng mght have been expected to cut a lttle 1 bt nto the early attendance at the Jolly Weaver party. But a frend ours who went over to t sad that the Campus Room was flled to the glls. The Ph Sgs had rented the regular band and show along wth the room tself, and t made a very good party. So successful a party, n.fact, that the Ph Sgs ntend to hold future Jolly Weavers n a smlar locaton. Saturday nght w,? went to the DU Carnval, and we weren't dsapponted. The DU's had the usual array penny ptchng, card tossng, and shootng gallery, et al, all n constant use. n passng we notced a new and more ornate Hurdy-Gurdy. The operator, a small, gray talan, was ngenous. By allowng ntrgued onlookers to operate hs nstrument he managed to get to the refreshment stand about as ten as we dd. ncdentally, Joe Gottleb deserves ths week's perseverance award for hs efforts to recte that dalect doggerel "Young Albert and the on" from the pano bench. The facal expressons were good, but the words were lost n the general uproar. Ths dd not daunt Showman Gottleb. Stan Harrs's panst wore a rather resgned expresson all through the epsode, possbly not realzng the magntude the personalty who had dsplaced hm. The Sgma Nu Whte Rose Formal was very well attended too-about two hundred couples n al. For our money the Sgma Na's had one the best ntermsson entertanments ths year when they brought n Bob Wlbur's outft from the Savoy. &A - ;,! M 'resents ts 37t M. Fensgate Caters To College Crowd Wth ow Prces Wanderng by Beacon Street' n the usual stupor one evenng we were entced nto the Hotel Fensgate for lack other 'handy refreshmenrt. Ths proved to be a rather fortunate event snce the hotel has changed hands recently and seems determned to cater to the college crowd. Money beng prme mportance, we were delghted to fnd that prces had been rolled back all along 'the lne, ncludng both food and drnk. Along wth varous other xestaurants n the vcnty, the Fensgate now serves 39 cent drnks to eght o'clock n the bar. F Moderately Prced P : added 'attracton s the 99 cent dr:.er to follw the cocktals. The cock-tals ncdentally are served up by a very competent bartender. There are more elaborate meals to be had 'but prce goes up at a goodly rate. n lne wth ther appeal to the college crowd the Fensgate has redone the second floor for beer drn:kng and song sngng. Ths should fer a good opportunty for those member the nsttute who have been complanng about the lack brauhaus flavor n Boston. The room wll soon be complete wth ncestructble walls.for the purpose leavng your name or ntals behnd for future generatons to admre. Drnks and Beer Prces are a dream n ths costconscous cty. The 39 cent drnks wll be contnued upstars to closng tme wlle the brew sells for 35 a bottle or 65 a quart. Due to Boston blue laws, you can't 'have more than two drnks on your table at any tme, so brng a frend along to guzzle the quart wth you. The plans accordng to the manager are not yet complete and, tlhe future wll see a larger dance floor downstars plus more entertanment on the second floor. And please don't thnk that these two men are brothers. Though Jm and Ted bear the same last name, they never set eyes on each other before arrvng here at the nsttute. Once here, both them took an mmedate nterest n sports, and both have played three years on varous varsty squads. Physcally, both are about the Ted (left) and Jm Madden same heght, fve feet eleven nches, and both are quet spoken and serous faced. But there the resemblance ends. "Pygmalon," a Brtsh flm, s based upon the George Bernard Shaw play and can be seen now at the Exeter Theater. The allegorc tale "Pygmalon" tells a pressor phonetcs and how he fnds and transforms a common, cheap flower grl nto an elegant lady; one whom he can pass f as a duchess at a ball. The Shaw play develops ths theme brl-. lantly and then, after the success at the ball, shows the tragedy Elza, the flower grl, and the cold brutalty Pressor Hggns and socety. "Pygmalon," the play, ends after three acts comedy as a tragedy. The move's one glarng error s ts endng, where unlke the play, Elza and Pressor Hggns fall n love and supposedly lve hap- t s ths endng compromse wth conventonalty that prevents ths flm from beng a masterpece cnematc art. The actng and drecton s truly excellent. Gabrel Pascal has d m XR F T'S "ARROW"9.rected all the scenes wth a wonderful lghtness, and esle Howard and Wendy Hler as the pressor and hs flower grl are superb. Mss Hller's transformaton voce, bearng and appearance as she changes from the guttersnpe the sde streets to a lady regal ele-.gance s wonderful to perceve; Mr. Howard as her stern tutor plays wth hs customary polsh. The show wll be lvely and easly the best the Tech Shows that can remember. Also ths week wll brng the openng a new muscal "South Pacfc" starrng Mary Martn and Ezlo Pnza. Mss Martn s a surefre veteran muslca comedy.
