2 r Sarah Abu-Hasira Dn Berg Ben Carden Zach Badie Brian Brazill Suthwestern Cllege was funded in 1885 by the Suthwest Cnference f Methdist Episcpal Church. It graduated its first class in SC is celebrating its 120th year in existence. SC earned its accreditatin in 1917 fr Nrth Central Assciatin f Schls and Clleges. In 195 st f the ain adinistrative building (at that tie called Richardsn) burned, but the fur pillars that verlked the Walnut Valley reained. With nly three buildings at that pint, ne f which just burned and anther cndened, the future f the cllege was very uch in dubt. In June f 1950, the Central Kansas Cnference f the United Methdist Church vted t cntinue the cllege and assure its future thrugh "The Millin Dllar Building Prgra." They were built abut the sae tie as Richardsn Hall (nw knwn as Christy Adinistratin Building) arund the early 1900s. They were first renvated in 1985 and then again this past year. The real questin, hwever, is why 77 steps. When apprached, any individuals and departents were stuped. Even frer archivist, Jerry Wallace, culd nt explain such a nuber. Many ries were entertained, hwever. One such stry was related t the ala ater, which happens t have 77 wrds t it. It can be cncluded that in an effrt t reeber the ala ater each step was assigned a particular wrd fr the graduates t recite as the apprached the tp. By far, the stry that resurfaced the st was that it just happened t take 77 steps t reach the apex f t hill fr the ft f the hill. S t this date, it will be aintained that the cntractrs f 1907 fu ut that 77 apprxiately 14-inch steps reached the apex f the hill fr the btt. Over 140 new freshen participated in the 14th annual Freshan Wrkday, planned by Leadership Suthwestern. The day is designed t bring en tgether in service with the Winfield cunity. The freshen were divided up int different grups and assigned separate wrk sites. Each f the 18 wrk sites had any prjects, including painting and gardening. After a lng day f anual labr and a shrt rest perid, the wrkday vlunteers were treated t a banquet a Hawaiian thee. At the end f the day, new bnds f friendship had been built nt nly with fellw stur1a,.. but als with faculty vlunteers and ebers f the Winfield cunity itself. 24 z By Szeth Shan Lin Fall Frenzy frenzied fr August 18th thrugh 27th. This year kicked ff with Builder Cap, where freshe rasted arshallws and bnded at Rck Springs. Freshan Wrkday fllwed that weekend, and the wt capus gathered fr fun and fd at the Welce Back BBQ and Sunday Sundaes. The next day, Builder FE was held at the btt f the 77 steps and students let lse n gaes and rides at the carnival. The entel ing night als featured cedian Bernie McGrenahan and singer Shevy Sith n the guitar. Overall the tea finished third in the regular seasn and advanced int KCAC quarter-finals where they et up with Bethany. Unfrtunately that was as far as they gt. Fr 25 years in a rw, Cach Heler has trained his Mundbuilder crss suntry tea t the first place finish in the KCAC. The Builders were ranked 9th natinally at the start f the seasn, but thrugh individual hardships, eventually fell ut f the rankings. The tea strived thrugh the adversity later in the seasn, and when it was tie t qualify fr the natinal eet, they pulled thrugh.
