A free fun-filled day fr Scuts, their families, and the public prviding an adventurus learning experience fr all Cub Scuts, By Scuts, Varsity Scuts, Venturers, and Explrers. The event is als an pprtunity t prvide unit members with the excitement f planning a prject tgether as a team and displaying the cmpleted prject. Yur Scuts can shw their families as well as their cmmunities what the Scuting prgram has t ffer tday s yuth. Dn t miss yur pprtunity t shwcase yur Scuts and their talents. THIS YEAR S THEME: Emergency Preparedness Expanding the Scpe f Scut-O-Rama Traditinally, Scut-O-Rama has been a vehicle fr the By Scuts f America t shw the public what the By Scuts d, while allwing the Scut participate in fun activities in a public arena. The activities at Scut-O-Rama were nly hsted by BSA units within Ls Padres Cuncil. Hwever, in the fall f 2017, the management f Ls Padres learned the fllwing statistics: In Santa Barbara, 1 f 4 children use drugs r alchl n a daily r weekly basis and are in need f substance abuse treatment. Yuth wh d nt get ff their addictin by age 24, it will mst likely becme "hard-wired" int their psyche, s that they will mst likely never get past it. Fr thse yuth that d nt get passed their addictin, their average life expectancy is 36 years f age. Kids wh are active in yuth rganizatins are 70% less likely t use drugs r alchl. If we can keep kids frm using drugs r alchl during adlescence, they are 80% less likely t becme dependent n substances later in their lives. Substance abuse csts the United States an estimated $272 billn per year fr the cst f rehabilitatin; that s $1,008 per year fr every man, wman, & child in the United States. Once the cst f ther factrs are added in (crimes cmmitted t supprt drug habits, csts assciated with raising children whse parents have died as a result f drug verdses, csts f incarceratin, etc.), this amunt increases by a factr f 12, r $3.264 trillin, r $12,096 per year fr every man, wman, & child in the United States. Surce: CADA - Cuncil n Alchlism and Drug Abuse As a result f learning these statistics, Ls Padres Cuncil decided t invite ther yuth rganizatins t hld membership sign-up tables at the 2018 Scut-O-Rama in an effrt t help them increase their active yuth participatin in their rganizatins. The idea is that if yuth jin and are active in any yuth rganizatin, they are 2018 Scut-O-Rama Page 1 f 10

Althugh Ls Padres Cuncil will have t pay fees fr the facility and ther expenses fr presenting Scut-O-Rama, the ther yuth rganizatins will nt be charged fr their participatin in this year's event. The Santa Barbara Z: Our 2018 Scut-O-Rama Primary Spnsr Upn learning abut the abve statistics and the missin f this year's Scut-O-Rama, the Santa Barbara Z has graciusly ffered t be this year's primary spnsr. The z has dnated $10,000 fr ur effrts, and will als allw us t hst banners and present flyers at the z prir t ur event in rder t better prmte it t the general public. Withut the Santa Barbara Z, and ur ther spnsrs, it is unlikely that we wuld be able t hst such an enrmus undertaking. Why Scut-O-Rama? T shw the cmmunity Scuting in Actin ; T learn what ther Scuts and units are ding in Ls Padres Cuncil; T teach ther Scuts and the public new skills; and It s a fun prgram fr all Scuts, and the public. Hw t Take Part? /Steps in Signing Up 1. Unit r Yuth Organizatin Leadership agrees t participate. 2. Unit r Yuth Organizatin leadership decides n a theme r tpic fr the bth r demnstratin. (Fr a list f suggestins, please refer t page 4.) All bths must cmply with the Guide t Safe Scuting Rules, Climbing and Rappelling Rules, and COPE rules where applicable. If yu have a questin abut any guidelines, please cntact Jim Pyler at the Santa Barbara Service Center, (805) Unit r Yuth Organizatin leadership decides n space needs fr bth r demnstratin. Please nte that the lcatins will nt have electricity r water fr the bth r demnstratin space. (Public restrms are available n the prperty, hwever.) 4. Unit r Yuth Organizatin Leadership cmpletes and returns the attached applicatin by Friday, June 8, Be sure t list special needs, if any. 5. The Scut-O-Rama Cmmittee reviews the applicatin and apprves theme/tpic requests (Nte: The Scut-O-Rama Cmmittee, by reviewing the applicatin, will try t avid tw r mre units presenting the same tpics. This simply means that the quicker yur applicatin is in, the mre likely yur chice will be apprved.) 6. Bth demnstratin ready by 9:45 AM, Saturday, June 16, 2018 and must remain pen until 3:00 PM in afternn. All members f the public are welcme t participate, with certain demnstratins pssibly having specific age restrictins due t safety cncerns fr the participate. Ls Padres Cuncil, By Scuts f America Tips fr a Successful Bth MAKE IT INTERACTIVE! Be sure all yuth members get in n the act -- this is their shw. Make it alive and fun! Nthing is less attractive than a dead exhibit. Invlve the audience as participants in a game, take a quiz, r try a skill. Yu will get mre peple t stp at yur bth if they can d smething. AVOID MOVIES OR SLIDES. Mst peple wn t stay lng enugh t see the entire series f slides r films. They will want t see yur yuth members in actin, and have their yuth participate as well. THE SIXTY SECOND RULE Experienced exhibitrs tell us that yu have sixty (60) secnds t achieve three bjectives: 1. Attract attentin 2. Invlve the audience mentally 3. Mtivate them t actin REMEMBER TO HAVE THE DISPLAY GOING AT ALL TIMES. Be sure t nt leave befre the end f the day, r begin the day late. In rder fr yur yuth t als have time t enjy all there is t ffer, a shift rster shuld be made fr every bth. PROPER UNIFORMING IS ESSENTIAL. Scuting is n display and being in unifrm will shw the public the sense f pride, that belnging t a glrius and histric rganizatin, cuntless times ver the years. This includes ther, nn-bsa rganizatins that als may participate in having a bth r demnstratin. If thse rganizatins d nt have a specific unifrm, then cnsider having yur members wear a custm tee-shirt t shw grup unity. Fr BSA units, it is preferred that yur yuth and adult members dress in their Class A unifrms, but Class B unifrms may be used when it wuld be mre practical. Steps t Preparing the Bth Once yur theme/tpic is apprved and area assigned: 1. Determine materials needed fr setting up yur area. 2. Yu will need t supply yur wn table and chairs. 3. Have yur yuth participants wrk n the needed prjects in preparatin fr Scut-O-Rama. Please keep in mind that Actin & Participatin shuld be key elements in the bth/demnstratin, nt nly fr 2018 Scut-O-Rama Page 3 f 10

Set up a schedule fr yur yuth t man the bth area with adult supervisin. Please be sure t leave time fr these yung peple t wander thrugh the ther displays and see what s ging n arund them. 5. Cmmunicate this schedule t all parents, s they are aware f their Scut s time cmmitment. (Please remember that the area is t be manned at all times with at least tw adults.) 6. The Cuncil will prvide a sign that shws the fllwing: Unit Type & Number r Yuth Organizatin Name Chartered Partner s Name (if applicable) Display Theme Cmmunity yur unit r rganizatin is frm 7. Please bring yur unit flag and American flag if wned. Yu ll als need stands fr these flags. Be mindful that there is a pssibility f wind since we will be utdrs. Other Infrmatin 1. Patches An attractive 2018 Scut-O-Rama patch will be given t all participating Cub Scuts, By Scuts, Varsity Scuts, Venturers, and Adult Leaders/Advisrs, and newly registered Scuts. 2. Bths will be judged during the Scut-O-Rama. Ribbns will be awarded. When area is cleaned up, please prceed t the cuncil bth and smene there will check yu ut, get yur patches, annunce yur exhibit scre, and give yu the apprpriate ribbn fr yur unit flag. The scring system used fr these ribbns are as fllws: Exhibit pened n schedule and cntinued until clsing (1 t 15 pints). The unit flag r banner is in the exhibit alng with an American flag (1 t 15 pints). The exhibit is live-actin, hands n display f theme. Instead f sme srt f a static display (1 t 25 pints). Exhibit participants are in prper unifrm and exhibit is manned at all times by at least tw (2) yuth and tw (2) adults (1 t 25 pints). Unit specific recruiting material is available and actively used (including Applicatins) (1 t 20 pints). Ribbns will be awarded as fllws: Pints Participating Unit with Hnr & Merit Pints Participating Unit with Hnr Up t 80 Pints Participating Unit 3. A map designating yur assigned area will be prvided. The use f signs and psters within yur display area is permitted but must be f a prfessinal nature. Please d nt use unprfessinal lking signs. It nly lessens yur image and urs as well. Maximum Display sizes: a) Height 12 feet. b) Length 10 feet (unless prir apprval is btained). c) Width 10 feet (unless prir apprval is btained). 7. All tables, chairs, backdrps, easels and prps must be maintained inside yur designated display area. If yu are using a backdrp behind yur exhibit it must be attractive n bth sides. Any prps used t decrate yur display shuld be flame retardant. Please cver all tables with either white paper r white clth. 8. Leave N Trace Behind Please practice Leave N Trace Techniques when cleaning exhibit areas. 9. Premiums and Giveaways The use f premiums and giveaways are ne way t make that visitrs stp by yur exhibit. Cme ready and prepared t have fun! 10.
