Eric Lauer worked 5.0 innings last night, allowing six runs (three earned) on a career-high nine hits...he fanned three and did not issue a walk. Relievers Kazuhisa Makita, Robert Stock, and José Castillo combined to toss 4.0 innings of two-hit, scoreless ball with five strikeouts. Eric Hosmer added his fifth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-5 with a run scored (last: June 3 vs. CIN)...Wil Myers also contributed a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-5 under the Friday night lights. HOW YOU DOIN'?: Tonight, starter Joey Lucchesi gets the nod for his first-career appearance against the Buccaneers...he's worked 5.0-or-more innings in eight of his 11 starts this season, and when he goes at least five, he has a 2.95 ERA (14 er, 42.2 ip) and a.232 opponent average...when he doesn't get through 5.0 (three starts), he has a 6.10 ERA (7 er, 10.1 ip). AHOY MATEY: In five games this season, Padres relievers have a 0.59 ERA (1 er, 15.1 ip) vs. the Pirates...they've inherited nine Buccaneer runners, allowing just one of them to score (11.1 IRS percentage), and they've held the Pirates to a.211 average (12-for-57) with 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings. ROLLIN' ROLLIN' ROLLIN': The Padres have a 48.4 ground ball percentage (while batting) this year, the second-highest in baseball behind MIA's 48.7 mark. FINDING A WAY: The Friars have the fourth-most infield hits in the big leagues this year with 77 (rank second in the NL behind CHC's 89)...Travis Jankowski leads the club with 12. NOT ALL ABOUT THE RADAR GUN: Fastballs thrown by the Padres pitching staff have averaged at 90.8 mph, the slowest of any team this season...on average, San Diego pitchers have thrown fastballs 57.3 percent of the time (which ranks 11th-most in the majors)...pirates hurlers have averaged 93.9 mph on their fastballs (leading the NL and third in the ML), and they've thrown them 64.3 percent of the time (the highest percentage of any team). STARTING STRONG: In their last eight starts since June SF (the inception of their last roadtrip), Padres starters have fostered a 2.84 ERA (14 er, 44.1 ip)...they've held the opposition to a.234 clip, while only getting 10 runs of support in those eight games (2.03 run support average). JUST BE SUPPORTIVE: Padres starters have a run support average of 4.06, the lowest mark in the National League and fourth-lowest in the majors, behind KC's 4.03, DET's 3.98 and BAL's 3.79 run support average. JUNE GLOOM: SD has the fourth-fewest extra-base hits in the majors in June (62), and the Pirates have the second-fewest (59), ahead of just the Royals (56). 2 #37 LHP JOEY LUCCHESI (3-3, 3.57) joeyfuego23 LET'S GO FUEGO: 24-year-old Joey Lucchesi is set to make his third start since being reinstated from the 10-day disabled list on 6/20 with a right hip strain, which forced him to miss the club's previous 32 games. Tonight will mark his first career start against the Pirates and the 12th of his career. Prior to heading to the DL, his 3.23 ERA (17 ER, 47.1 IP) ranked 17th among all NL arms and led all ML rookies. PICK ME BABY ONE MORE TIME: Lucchesi's three pickoffs led all of MLB before being placed on the DL... fellow rookie lefty Eric Lauer now leads the majors with his seven pickoffs...their 10 combined pickoffs are the most by a Padres rookie duo since 2009, when Clayton Richard and Josh Geer combined for six pickoffs. Cory Luebke previously held the most pickoffs by a rookie in Padres history (four in 2011)...besides Richard's and Geer's three apiece in 2009, the only other Padres to have three pickoffs during their rookie campaigns are current bullpen coach Doug Bocthler in 1995 and Ryan Buchter in JOEY LU'KK'HESI: Among all NL starting pitchers who have made at least 11 starts, his 9.34 SO/9.0 IP ratio leads the Padres staff and ranks 15th in the NL.
