Starter Brian Mitchell worked just 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with three walks, two strikeouts and one home run allowed. Eight different Padres had at least one hit in the game after being held to zero hits the night before. Closer Brad Hand allowed one hit and struck out the side in the ninth inning for his eighth save of the season...it marked the fifth time this season that Hand has recorded at least three strikeouts in a relief appearance. BEAT THE STREAK: With their 7-4 win last night, the Padres snapped their seven-game losing streak to the Los Angeles Dodgers (9/25/17-5/4/18)...the streak was San Diego's fourth-longest ever versus Los Angeles and their secondlongest in over 45 years...the Padres lost 16 consecutive games to the Dodgers from September 9, 1973 to September 20, 1974, and had two separate ninegame streaks (6/26-9/12/71 & 9/4/15-4/6/16)...San Diego is looking for its first series win over the Dodgers since they took three of four games during Labor Day weekend last year at Petco Park (9/1-9/3/17). THE WIZARD OF HOZ: Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer has homered twice in his last four games after hitting only two long balls over his first 26 games of the season...in his last nine games, Hosmer is batting.424 (14-33) with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, a.548 OBP and OPS...he's raised his season average from.241 to.293 over that stretch (since April 23). THE PEN IS MIGHTIER: The Padres bullpen threw a season-high 6.2 innings last night, allowing just one earned run (1.45 ERA) while striking out eight...the SD bullpen has fanned 147 batters this season, most in the National League and second-most in the majors behind the New York Yankees (173). STRIKE FIRST, STRIKE HARD: Last night, the Padres improved to 10-1 (.909) on the season in games in which they score first...on the flip side, San Diego is just 2-21 (.087) this year when opponents score first. NO REST FOR THE WEARY: Following today's game, the Padres will head home to San Diego to open up a nine-day, nine-game homestand (3 vs WSH, 4 vs STL, 2 vs COL)...the Padres' next off day will be Wednesday, May 16 before they hit the road for a 10-game, 11-day road trip through PIT, WSH & LAD. VAMOS VILLANUEVA!: Christian Villanueva, native of Guadalajara, leads all ML rookies in home runs (nine), and in the event he homers in the Mexico Series, he will become the first Mexican-born player to homer in Major League game played in Mexico. COOL FRANCH: OF Franchy Cordero has reached base safely in a career-high nine consecutive games and has eight walks and a.421 OBP in that time...he has walked five times in his last three games after posting five walks in his first 18 games of the season. 2 STARTING PITCHER NOTES #46 LHP ERIC LAUER (0-1, LAUER HOUR: 22-year-old Eric Lauer is set to make his third career start today in the series finale here in Monterrey, Mexico. THAT'S MORE LIKE IT: The Padres bullpen couldn't hang on in the ninth inning to give Lauer his first big league win on 4/30 at SF...Lauer bounced back from a three-run first inning to allow just three hits and no runs over the next four frames, including a career-high seven strikeouts. Lauer picked off Andrew McCutchen in the bottom of the third...with fellow rookie lefty Joey Lucchesi's pickoff on 4/5 at COL, it's the first time the Padres have had two rookie starters record pickoffs in the same season since 2014 (Jesse Hahn and Odrisamer Despaigne). In part of six minor league seasons, the 22-year-old Panama native is a career.241 hitter, playing 460 games at shortstop, four at second and four at third. This season with El Paso (AAA), he s started in 23 of the 25 games in which he s appeared, slashing.244/.296/.511 with three doubles, three triples, five home runs and 18 RBI. Hit his fourth career triple from the leadoff spot last night (fifth triple in his career overall) and first since WASH. Got his first start of the year in center field last night (two starts in RF) after being recalled on Sunday. Was hitting.363 (29-for-80) with four doubles and a homer for El Paso (AAA). Was riding an eight-game multi-hit streak for El Paso, going 18-for-32 (.563)...yesterday was awarded Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors for the period of April 23-29, his.783 OBP led the PCL, along with his.706 average, 12 hits and OPS. Entered the Spring as a non-roster invitee, and he finished slashing.320/.414/.880 with four homers, two doubles and seven RBI.
