MOVES: Today, the Padres optioned RHP Walker Lockett to El Paso (AAA) and recalled RHP Kazuhisa Makita from El Paso. SUNDAYS WITH JOEY: In his last time out, Joey Lucchesi worked 5.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) at Wrigley Field vs. CHC, fanning nine Cubs in the process...when Lucchesi gets three-or-more runs of support in a game, he is 5-0 with a 2.47 ERA with a.233 opponent average...when Joey works 5.0-or-more innings (has done so 12 times), he has a 2.81 ERA. IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY IN SAN DIEGO: At Petco Park since the start of the 2017 season, SD hurlers have a 2.40 ERA (12 er, 45.0 ip) against the Phillies, and SD relievers have a 1.98 ERA against them in that time as well. AUGUST AMBUSH: Since Aug. 1, the Friars have accrued a National League-leading.295 batting average (93-for-315), tying with Boston for the highest clip in the majors this month...they've also accrued a.355 OBP and an NL-leading.502 SLG. DON'T HEDGES YOUR BET: Austin Hedges is riding a career-high-tying six-game hitting streak since Aug. 4 (9-for-23,.391)...he's also riding a three-game multi-hit streak, already the longest of his career (.545, 6-for-11). MOUND STREAKIN': The last run the Padres bullpen allowed dates back to Aug. MIL, and they are currently riding a 13.2 scoreless inning streak...the Padres clean slate of not allowing a run since Aug. 9 is shared with just the bullpens of CHC, CWS and LAA. SINCE THE BREAK: Since the All-Star break, SD relievers have a 2.31 ERA (21 er, 81.2 ip), which is the best in the NL and second-best in the majors behind OAK's 2.12 ERA...SD's 'pen also has a Major League-best 1.02 WHIP since the break. MAKING QUICK WORK: The SD bullpen has, on average, used 16.1 pitches per inning, which tie for second-fewest pitches per inning of any bullpen, behind WHS's 15.6 pitches per inning...sd starters, meanwhile, use 16.9 pitches per inning on average, tied for eighth-most of any rotation this year. PADRES ON DECK: Last night in his debut for El Paso (AAA), LHP Logan Allen worked 6.0 shutout innings, allowing four hits and three walks with six strikeouts... 2 STARTING PITCHER NOTES #37 LHP JOEY LUCCHESI (5-6, 3.70) joeyfuego23 LET'S GO FUEGO: 25-year-old Joey Lucchesi is set to make his 18th start of the season today and fourth of the second half against the Philadelphia Phillies...it will be his first career start and appearance vs. PHI. LAST TIME OUT: Matched his career-high with nine SO over 5.2 IP at Wrigley Field while allowing a career-hightying seven hits in the Padres 10-6 win vs. CHC. In his seven starts since 6/20 after being reinstated from the 10-day DL with a right hip strain, he is 2-4 with a 4.33 ERA (17 ER, 35.1 IP), allowing two earned runs or less in six of those outings. AWAY FROM HOME: In his six starts away from Petco, Lucchesi has posted a 2.87 ERA and an opponent slash line of.222/.289/ in his 10 starts at Petco, he has posted a 4.08 ERA and a.254/.320/.452 line. YOU SHALL NOT REACH: Among all pitchers who have made at least 17 starts this season, Lucchesi has allowed the third-fewest baserunners (108) among all starters. His 9.47 SO/9.0 IP ratio leads the Padres staff and ranks 12th in the NL. LONG BALLS OF THE RARE TYPE: Lucchesi surrendered a career-high three home runs in his outing on 7/29 vs. ARI, but he allowed 10 home runs across his first 10 outings from 3/30-6/20. Prior to his outing on 7/29, he didn't allow a home run in five consecutive starts from 6/25-7/23, one of only five pitchers to not allowed a long ball over that time (min IP). SHOWING HE BELONGS: The Padres selected Lucchesi to the Major League roster to start the club's second game of the season on 3/30...he went on to allow three earned runs or fewer in eight of his first nine career outings from 3/30-5/14, posting a 3-2 record with a 3.23 ERA (17 ER, 47.1 IP) and 9.13 SO/9 IP. YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS: Lucchesi has been more effective with fewer days off between starts.
