NIX ARE FOR KIDS: In his Major League debut on Friday vs. PHI, 22-year-old Jacob Nix worked 6.0 innings of four-hit, scoreless ball, accruing four strikeouts on two walks and leading the Padres to their 2-0 victory over the Phillies...Nix became the first Padre to toss 6.0-or-more scoreless innings in his debut since Odrisamer Despaigne on June 23, SF (7.0 innings). VS. OUR DESERT FOE: The Padres have lost all three games in which they have played the D-Backs at Petco Park this season, and their last win vs. ARI at home came last season on Sept.19...SD went 5-4 last year at Petco vs. Arizona, claiming two of the three series...the Padres 5.61 ERA vs. ARI this season is the second-highest against any NL opponent (6.06 ERA vs. NYM), and offensively, their.264 OBP is the lowest against any NL club. INNING HOARDERS: The San Diego bullpen has worked 93.2 innings since the All- Star break, the second-most of any NL 'pen (behind CIN's 98.0 ip)...ari relievers have combined for just 63.2 innings in that time, the fewest of any bullpen in the majors. QUITE THE JUXTAPOSITION: Since the All-Star break, SD starters have the highest opponent average (.297) and ERA (6.28) of any rotation, while the D-Backs' rotation have the third-lowest opponent average (.226) and fourth-best ERA (3.07) in that time. QUITE THE JUXTAPOSITION (PART II): Since the All-Star break, SD relievers have the third-lowest opponent average (.223) and third-best ERA (2.88) of any bullpen...the D-Backs' 'pen have a.241 opponent average and a 4.66 ERA in that time. 2 STARTING PITCHER NOTES #63 RHP Jacob Nix (1-0, NIX ARE FOR KIDS: 22-year-old RHP Jacob Nix is set to make his second-career start and his first against the Arizona Diamondbacks...he'll be the seventh Padre rookie this season to face-off against the Padres desert nemesis and the third rookie starter to do so...in four starts by SD rookies vs. ARI this season (one by Eric Lauer and three by Joey Lucchesi), SD rookie starters have a collective 5.49 ERA vs. the snakes. LAST (AND FIRST) TIME OUT: In his Major League debut on Friday vs. PHI, Nix worked 6.0 innings of four-hit, scoreless ball, accruing four strikeouts on two walks and leading the Padres to their 2-0 victory over the Phillies... it was the 25th time this season for a rookie to not allow a single run and also work at least 6.0 innings in a game and just the third Padre rookie to do so (Eric Lauer on May 6 vs. LAD and Joey Lucchesi on Aug. 12 vs. PHI). BEEN AWHILE SINCE THAT HAPPENED: Nix became the first Padre to toss 6.0-or-more scoreless innings in his debut since Odrisamer Despaigne on June 23, SF (7.0 innings)...interestingly, the Angels (who the Padres just played) acquired Despaigne from Miami on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations. ANDY GREEN, PRIOR TO NIX'S DEBUT: "A lot of people clam up in those moments. They get really, really quiet. They get really anxious and really nervous...we're human beings, and it's the moment you've been dreaming of your whole life...but he was talking all day. He came in my office, sat down, and you could tell he was comfortable in his own skin...he was bigger than this moment." ANDY GREEN, FOLLOWING NIX'S DEBUT: "It was good to hear his close family and friends cheering for him really loud...you relish those moments as a manager to watch a young guy step up like that and have that type of a debut." TOMORROW'S STARTER #37 LHP Joey Lucchesi (6-6, 3.45) joeyfuego23 FINALLY FUEGO FRIDAY: LHP Joey Lucchesi is set to make the 19th start of his career and his fourth against the Arizona Diamondbacks...he's been saddled with the loss in all three of his starts against ARI, owning a 6.75 ERA (11 er, 14.2 ip) and four home runs allowed...it's his highest ERA vs. any NL club (has a ERA after his one start vs. OAK). The Padres have won three of his last four starts, and Lucchesi has a 3.80 ERA and a 2-1 record in that time...the one loss came against Arizona on July 29 at Petco Park (worked 4.1 innings and allowed five runs, earned, on six hits with three HR). Lucchesi's 31 walks allowed this year tie with ARI's Zack Greinke for the eighth-fewest of any NL hurler who has made at least 18 starts this year. Among Padre pitchers who've made at least 18 starts, his.236 opponent average is tops, as are is ERA (3.45), hits allowed (78), runs allowed (38), earned runs allowed (34) and winning percentage (.500, 6-6).
