Felipe Vázquez...89 ROCK AROUND THE BLOCK The Colorado Rockies are in the postseason for the second straight season, their first back-to-back postseason appearances in franchise history both times have entered as the second Wild Card Colorado was in a tie for first place in the National League West Division before dropping a tiebreaker game in Los Angeles on Oct. 1. The Rockies finished the 2018 regular season with a record of 91-72, their second-best record in franchise history and their best since going a franchise-best in The Rockies spent 25 days in first place, four days tied for first place, 61 days in second place, 14 days tied for second place, 31 days in third place, six days tie for third place and 22 days in fourth place. Finished with their best road record in franchise history at 44-38, the third time in franchise history that the Rockies have finished above.500 on the road (went in both 2017 and 2009). The Rockies went (.532) against NL West opponents, their third-most wins against their division in franchise history (42 in 2017, 43 in 2007), and their fourth-best winning percentage. OUR OWN DOING The Rockies pitching staff accumulated a 4.33 ERA (1,452.1 IP, 699 ER) with 525 walks and 1,409 strikeouts the ERA is the fourth-lowest for a single season in franchise history, and the lowest since a club-record 4.14 ERA in 2010 the 1,409 strikeouts were the most in franchise history (previous: 1,270 in 2017), and ranked eighth in the NL. Opponents batted.250 (1,377-for-5,501), the lowest opponent batting average in Rockies history for a single season (previous:.257 in 2010) their 1.31 WHIP was also the lowest in franchise history, beating 2010 s 1.34 mark. Rockies starters went with 883 strikeuts, tied for the sixth-most in the NL recorded a 4.17 ERA (932.0 IP, 432 ER). which was the second-lowest in franchise history behind their 4.10 ERA in 2009 the innings pitched were the most in the NL, the 12th-most in franchise history and the most since Rockies starters pitched innings in Logged 84 quality starts, their third-most in franchise history and the most since the 2010 Rockies logged 86. Per Elias, the Rockies became the first team since the 2011 Tampa Bay Rays to exclusively use starting pitchers who had never played for another Major League team. PLOP-PLOP, FIZZ-FIZZ Rockies relievers went (.525) compiled a 4.62 ERA (520.1 IP, 267 ER), which ranks 11th in franchise history the relief innings pitched were the fewest in the National Leauge, the third-fewest in the Majors and the fewest by the Rockies since 2011 (508.2) their 526 strikeouts were the third-most in franchise history and the fifth-fewest in the NL. Recorded 51 saves, the most in franchise history 43 of those saves belong to Wade Davis who led MLB and set a new franchise record, surpassing Greg Holland (2017) and Jose Jimenez (2002), who held the previous record with 41 saves. TOOK A HIT The Rockies as a team finished with a.256 batting average (1,418-for-5,541), their lowest batting average in franchise history scored 780 runs with 280 doubles, 42 triples, 210 home runs, 507 walks, 1,397 strikeouts, a.322 on-base percentage and a.435 slugging percentage. The 210 home runs were the fifth-most in franchise history, and the most since the Rockies hit 213 home runs in 2001 the on-base percentage of.322 was the second-lowest in franchise history, next to 2015 s figure of.315. At home, Colorado batted.287 (786-for-2,735), their fourth-lowest home batting average in franchise history and the 11th time that the Rockies batted below.300 at home in franchise history (batted.298 at Coors Field in 2017). On the road, the Rockies batted.225 (632-for-2,806), their lowest road batting average in franchise history scored 335 runs, tied for the 11th-most in franchise history their 91 road home runs were are tied for the third-most in franchise history, and are the most since they hit 92 on the road in ALL-STUDS The Rockies sent three players to the All-Star Game in Washington D.C. Trevor Story was named to his first All-Star roster, Charlie Blackmon his third, and Nolan Arenado his fourth. Arenado s four All-Star nods are tied with Dante Bichette and Larry Walker for the second-most in franchise history, and he joined Todd Helton as the only other Rockie to be selected to four consecutive All-Star rosters. Trevor Story hit a home run in his first career All-Star at-bat, the third All-Star Game home run in Rockies history (also: Matt Holliday in 2008, Todd Helton in 2003). Bud Black was named to Dave Roberts All-Star coaching staff, his second coaching appearance in the All-Star Game (also 2002 as the pitching coach for the Angels). PUT IT ON THE MANTLE Rockies players combined for three NL Player of the Week honors and one Pitcher of the Month honor. Nolan Arenado was named Player of the Week for the week ending June 24, the fifth time in his career that he captured the recognition slashed.379/.419/.966 with seven runs scored, 11 hits, two doubles, five home runs and 13 RBI over seven games. Trevor Story, who hit his first walk-off home run to send the Rockies into the All-Star break, was named Player of the Week for the week ending July 15 Story batted.400 (10-for-25) with five runs, three doubles, three home runs, six RBI and walk and one stolen base over the week it was Story s third Player of the Week recognition in his career. David Dahl was named Player of the Week for the week ending September 30 batted.333 (10-for-30) with eight runs, one triple, six home runs and 15 RBI five of the six home runs were in consecutive games, the fourth Rockies player in franchise history to homer in five consecutive games (last: Nolan Arenado, six games, Sept. 1-5, 2015) it was Dahl s first Player of the Week honor. For September, German Márquez won the fourth Pitcher of the Month honor in Rockies franchise history (last: Ubaldo Jimenez, May 2010) he went 3-1 in September with a 2.14 ERA (33.1 IP, 8 ER), five walks and 48 strikeouts the 48 strikeouts were the most in September and the third-most ever for any single month in franchise history. OLD AND NEW FROM NEAR AND FAR The Rockies acquired three players from outside the orgainzaton over the course of the 2018 season who played with Colorado. Outfielder Matt Holliday is on his second career stint with Colorado (made his Major League debut for the Rockies in 2004 and played parts of five seasons prior to a 2008 trade to Oakland for three players, including Carlos González) was signed to a Minor League contract on July 29 and was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 23 in 25 games (14 starts) for the Rockies, batted.283 (15-for-53) with three runs, two doubles, two home runs, three RBI and 12 walks. South Korean-native Seunghwan Oh was acquired via trade from Toronto in exchange for three Minor League players on July 26 in 25 relief appearances for Colorado, the right-hander went 2-0 with one save and a 2.53 ERA (21.1 IP, 6 ER), seven walks and 24 strikeouts. Catcher Drew Butera was acquired via trade from Kansas City in exchange for Jerry Vasto on Aug. 31 batted.214 (3-for-14) with one home run and three RBI across 10 games (five starts) for the Rockies. Acquired: Selected in first round of 2011 draft The 28-year-old left-hander made his second career Opening Day roster in his third Major League season. Made a career-high 32 starts, going 7-9 with a 4.55 ERA (176.0 IP, 89 ER), 59 walks and 164 strikeouts innings pitched and strikeouts were also career highs allowed 30 home runs, tied for the most in the National League. Acquired: Selected first Round 2014 First-Year Player Draft Denver native and graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School made his second career Opening Day roster in his second Major League season. Made 33 starts, going 17-7 with a 2.85 ERA (202.1 IP, 64 ER), the lowest ERA in a full season in franchise history and the fourth-lowest in the NL it was the second-lowest in franchise history among ERA qualifiers, trailing Marvin Freeman s 2.80 ERA (112.2 IP, 35 ER) in the strike-shortened 1994 season. His innings pitched ranked fifth in the National League, the first Rockies pitcher to reach 200 innings pitched in a season since Ubaldo Jiménez in 2010 (221.2 IP).
