The Friars kept their hopes alive of winning their sixth consecutive series after having won their previous five, their longest series winning stretch since San Diego has now won six of its last nine games and 12 of its last 17. Starter Clayton Richard extended his ML-leading streak of eight consecutive starts throwing at least 6.0 innings by a lefty, allowing three runs (two earned) on six strikeouts and two walks...over his last seven starts since May 8, he is now 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA (16 ER, 48.1 IP) with 37 strikeouts against 12 walks and.193 opponent average. BATS AT WORK: The Padres plated five runs in the seventh inning after entering the frame trailing it marked the fifth time this season that the Padres scored at least five runs in an inning, and the second time they did so when trailing in the seventh inning or later (also: 4/23 at COL). OF Hunter Renfroe (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB) hit a go-ahead two-out, two RBI single to give the Padres the 4-3 lead...since being recalled from El Paso on May 28, he is slashing.292/.370/.458. Freddy Galvis (5-5, 2B, HR, R, 4 RBI) led the offensive charge for the Padres, recording a career-high five hits, including a three-run HR in the frame...it was the first five-hit effort by a Padre since Jon Jay went 5-for-6 on June 2, 2016 vs. SEA. Manuel Margot (2-3, BB) recorded his third-multi hit effort in his last four games...he has now hit safely in seven of his last eight contests and is slashing.407/.448/.556 over the stretch. THE WAIT IS OVER: 2B Jose Pirela gave the Padres the 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning last night with his first homer of the season...dating back to September 4, 2017, Pirela was homerless in his previous 293 at-bats, which was the secondlongest streak in the majors heading into last night and trailed only TB's Mallex Smith's 320 at-bat homerless streak. Last season, Pirela homered in his 14th at-bat in his fifth game played on June 10 and went on to hit 10 homers. The Padres are now 25-4 when plating the first run of the game. TABLE SETTER: LF Travis Jankowski led off last night's contest with a double and is now hitting.287 (37-for-129) out of the leadoff spot, the fifth-highest average in the National League. As a club, the Padres have the lowest average (.227) in the leadoff spot in the NL and the sixth-lowest in the majors...the Braves'.241 leadoff average is the fourth-lowest in the NL and 11th-lowest in the majors. WHEN IT MATTERS MOST: The Padres were 3-for-4 with RISP/2 out last night, raising their average to.293 (75-for-256) in such scenarios, which leads the majors... the Milwaukee Brewers'.268 average with RISP/2 out ranks second. ROAD TRIPPIN': In the eight games this roadtrip, the Padres have gone 5-3 and have out-hit their opposition 69 to 53...San Diego hurlers have held the Marlins, Cardinals and now Atlanta to a combined.209 batting average (53-for-253) with a 2.87 ERA (22 ER, 69.0 IP)...SD has committed five errors, however, while their nemeses have yet to record one. LATE BLOOMERS: In all games except for the first of the series, the Padres now have a.592 winning percentage (29-20)...with last night's victory after entering the seventh inning behind, the Padres are now 4-32 when trailing after six innings. 2 STARTING PITCHER NOTES #27 RHP JORDAN LYLES (2-3, 4.83 ERA) JORDAN'S TURN: 27-year-old RHP Jordan Lyles is set to make his eighth start of the season and his second against the Atlanta Braves...allowed a season-high eight runs on a season-high-tying 11 hits two starts ago on 6/5 vs. ATL at Petco Park in the Padres' 14-1 defeat. LYLES AND THE LEFTIES: Lyles retired all seven lefties he faced in his last outing on 6/11 at STL and is now limiting left-handed hitters to a.198 average this season (20-for- 101)...he's the first Padre since LHP Eric Stults in 2013 (.185 average) to hold left-handed batters to a sub-.200 average in a single season (minimum five starts and 100 at bats vs. lefties). LAST TIME OUT: Allowed four runs and a season-hightying 11 hits for the second consecutive outing on 6/11 vs. STL in the Padres' 5-2 loss. Over his first two starts this season, he was 1-1 with a 0.73 ERA (1 ER, 12.1 IP) with 16 SO against two walks. STATCAST SAYS: Lyles relies on five pitches this season...four seamer (34.1%), curve (26.1%), changeup (15.7%), sinker (12.1%) and slider (12.1%)...opponents are hitting just.203 against his curveball this season. ALMOST PERFECT: Lyles worked the second-longest perfect game bid (7.2 IP) in Padres history in his second start of the season on 5/15 vs. COL...it trailed only Chris Young's 7.2 perfect innings on 9/7/08 at MIL. Slugging.608 since his first homer on May 28 vs. MIA with a double, five homers and six RBI.
