Cucamonga at Inland Empire, 7:05 Giants Begin Four-Game Series Against Modesto Tonight The San Jose Giants continue their homestand this evening with the opener of a four-game series against the Modesto Nuts at Municipal Stadium. Conner Menez (6-3, 3.52) is slated to start on the mound for the Giants tonight. San Jose is 10-8 against Modesto this season, but just 2-5 at home. In Search Of Back-To-Back Home Wins Following last night s 3-2 victory over Rancho Cucamonga, the Giants are in search of back-to-back home wins. San Jose has won consecutive home games only twice this season: April and June (both against Stockton). The Giants have yet to win more than two games in a row at home this year. Streaky Team San Jose has been a streaky team of late. The Giants won a season-high four games in a row from June before dropping a season-high seven consecutive games from June (all against Visalia). The long skid was followed by a stretch of winning five out of six games (June 25-30) before losing four of six (July 1-6). LAST GAME July R H E Rancho C San Jose x WP: McCasland (4-8) LP: Santana (5-6) S: Rheault (9) Giants starter Jake McCasland took a shutout into the seventh inning before closer Dylan Rheault escaped a bases loaded, none out jam late to lead San Jose to a 3-2 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Thursday night at Municipal Stadium. McCasland surrendered just one unearned run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings to pick-up the win. The right-hander walked three and matched a season-high with seven strikeouts. Will LaMarche (2/3 IP) stranded the potential tying runs on base in the seventh before Rheault (2 IP) left the bases loaded in a one-run game in the eighth. Rheault then tossed a scoreless ninth inning for the save. Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-4, 2B, 3B) finished a triple shy of the cycle to lead the Giants at the plate. Ryan Howard added three singles. Offensive Woes Over their last seven games (3-4 record), San Jose has scored a total of just 15 runs (2.1 per game) while batting.226 as a team. The Giants haven t homered in seven consecutive games their longest homerless drought of the season. San Jose hasn t scored more than three runs in any of their last seven contests. Futures Game Bryan Reynolds has been selected to play in the Futures Game, which will be held this Sunday in Miami as part of the MLB All-Star festivities. Reynolds was San Francisco s top draft pick last year (second round) and is currently rated the #3 prospect in the Giants organization according to MLB.com. Reynolds is batting.294 with four home runs, a league-leading seven triples and 31 RBI s in 71 games this season. Reynolds was placed on the Temporary Inactive List today and will return to San Jose after the Futures Game. At Muni The Giants are a league-worst at home this season (23-20 on the road). The Giants went just at home during the first half, but are off to a 4-3 start at Municipal Stadium in the second half. San Jose is batting.246 as a team and averaging 3.9 runs per game at home this season compared to a.267 AVG and 5.2 runs per game on the road. Howard Hits With three more hits last night, Ryan Howard improved his season batting average to.328 second in the California League (Lancaster s Yonathan Daza leads at.365). Howard is also second in the league with 102 hits. He has 32 multi-hit games this season (in 74 games played): 21 two-hit games, nine three-hit games and two four-hit games. Howard s month-by-month batting averages: April (.323), May (.315), June (.348), July (.333). Howard is also batting a team-best.366 with runners in scoring position. Bennett s Streak T.J. Bennett enters tonight s contest having picked-up a hit in seven consecutive at-bats. The hot streak has raised his season batting average from.123 to.202. Bennett was only 10-for-81 this year in San Jose before collecting hits in his last seven at-bats. The California League record is 10 straight at-bats with a hit. Bumgarner Rehab Start Monday Four-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion Madison Bumgarner is scheduled to make his second rehab start with San Jose in Monday s series finale against Modesto. Bumgarner started last Wednesday s game for the SJ Giants versus Rancho Cucamonga and was tagged for nine runs on nine hits (four homers) in four innings. Bumgarner, who last appeared in a major league game on April 19, is returning from a left shoulder AC sprain and bruised ribs. Bumgarner made five starts for San Jose as a 19-year old in 2009 and was 3-1 with a 1.48 ERA.
