The series versus Stockton will close out the regular season for the Giants. Matt Solter (5-1, 3.57) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose tonight. The Giants are against the Ports the season, including a 5-5 mark at Banner Island Ballpark. Second Half Race Modesto (32-34), Stockton (32-34) and Visalia (32-34) are in a three-way tie for first place in the second half North Division race with the Giants (31-35) one game out. Four games remain in the regular season. San Jose has spent only one day in sole possession of first place in the second half (August 11). The Giants have reached the playoffs in 12 out of the last 13 seasons ( , ). On The Brink The Giants need to sweep their seasonending four-game series at Stockton to keep their playoff hopes alive. A sweep of the Ports with Modesto and Visalia also splitting their season-ending four-game set would give San LAST GAME August R H E San Jose Inland Emp x WP: Gatto (3-2) LP: Mazza (0-2) S: De Los Santos (10) The Inland Empire 66ers scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead Thursday night before holding off San Jose in a 5-3 victory over the Giants at San Manuel Stadium. With the loss, San Jose dropped two out of three games in the series. Sixers starting pitcher Joe Gatto earned the win after tossing 5 2/3 innings with only two runs (one earned) allowed. Inland Empire s Keith Grieshaber had two hits, including a three-run double during the first-inning rally. Jalen Miller (2-for-4) and Cristian Paulino (2-for-5) had two hits apiece while Gio Brusa (1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) drove home a pair of runs to lead the Giants offensively in defeat. Domenic Mazza (6 1/3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) suffered the loss. Jose the outright second half North Division title. If Visalia takes three of four games and San Jose sweeps, the Giants and Rawhide will play a one-game playoff on Tuesday to determine the second half winner. One San Jose loss to Stockton would eliminate the Giants from playoff contention. San Jose does not hold the tiebreaker in a two-way tie with Modesto or in a three-way tie with Modesto and Visalia. Road Woes Following last night s loss, the Giants have dropped 10 out of their last 15 road games. San Jose last won two road games in a row on July 18 (at Lake Elsinore) and July 27 (at Lancaster). The Giants are just on the road in the second half after first half road record. August Review The Giants finished the month of August with a record. It marked San Jose s best monthly record this season (April 11-13, May 12-17, June 12-14, July 12-17). The Giants still haven t had a winning month since May 2016 (21-9). Top individual performers in August were: Jonah Arenado (.357 AVG, 5 HR, 23 RBI), Bryan Reynolds (.278 AVG, 4 HR, 16 RBI), Garrett Williams (5 G, 4 GS, 2-1, 1.55 ERA, 34 SO in 29 IP) and Matt Krook (8 G, 1.02 ERA, 25 SO in 17.2 IP). Reynolds Named Team MVP Bryan Reynolds was named 2017 San Jose Giants Team MVP in a ceremony prior to last Sunday s home finale. Reynolds is batting.306 with 24 doubles, nine triples, nine home runs and 57 RBI s in 117 games for the Giants this season. The 2016 second round draft pick hit.295 with three home runs in the first half and is batting at a.318 clip with six homers in the second half. Reynolds has also collected nine outfield assists this season. Other team award winners this year include: Ryan Howard (Offensive Player of the Year), Conner Menez (Pitcher of the Year), Ronnie Jebavy (Defensive Player of the Year), Dylan Rheault (Relief Pitcher of the Year) and Matt Paré (Good Guy Award). Postseason All-Stars Three Giants catcher Aramis Garcia, shortstop Ryan Howard and relief pitcher Dylan Rheault were named to the postseason California League All-Star team last week. San Jose tied with Lancaster and Rancho Cucamonga for the most selections to the team. Garcia and Howard were also named midseason All-Stars in June. League Leaderboard The Giants boast two out of the top six hitters in the California League in Bryan Reynolds (5th,.306) and Ryan Howard (6th,.305). Howard is also third in the league in hits (157) while Jonah Arenado ranks tied for second in doubles (35) and eighth in RBI s (73). On the mound, Dylan Rheault leads the league in saves (21). Overall Record The Giants (61-75) have clinched a sub-.500 overall record this season. It marks the first time since that San Jose finishes with back-to-back losing seasons. The Giants went last year after a California League record 12 consecutive winning seasons from Arenado s Strong Finish Over his last 34 games, Jonah Arenado is batting.367 with 18 doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI s. He s raised his season batting average from.232 to.272 during the 34-game stretch. Arenado, who also spent all of last season with San Jose, ranks third in team history with 71 doubles. Julio Cordido ( , 2006) holds the Giants alltime record with 73 doubles. Late Innings San Jose leads the league in victories when trailing after six innings (11 wins) and victories when trailing after eight innings (five wins tied). The Giants are also the only team in the league this season to have not suffered a loss when leading after eight innings (54-0).
