Other bicycle menities include gym nd bike repir shop locted ner the center of cmpus. Approximtely 8 percent of U Dvis ffilites commute to cmpus by bicycle, including percent of undergrdutes, 8 percent of grdute students, 7 percent of fculty, nd 16 percent of stff. Adding too much prking too quickly, would increse the price of prking shrply. The result would be big drop in prking demnd, s commuters find other wys of getting to cmpus or simply prk in the surrounding neighborhoods. If prking spces sit empty, the price of prking must be rised higher on the spces tht re full in order to py off the prking construction debt. For the prking system to be finncilly stble, bout percent of spces should be full t pek just s the centrl grge currently opertes. Ironiclly, building more prking on cmpus results in fewer prkers on cmpus nd more commuters prking in surrounding neighborhoods. It is importnt, therefore, tht prking losses nd dditions be blnced with one nother in such wy tht resulting price increses keep demnd stedy. Adding prking spces too slowly or too quickly will both crete ccess nd prking spillor problems for the cmpus. The cmpus mster pln therefore proposes phsed replcement of the existing centrl grge with combintion of surfce prking fcilities nd smller perimeter prking structures in order to disperse trffic, ser hubs of ctivity throughout cmpus, nd free the cmpus core for pedestrins. Building these new fcilities will result in stedy increse in prking fees s the cmpus popultion grows, mking it ll the more importnt for these increses to be crefully nd strtegiclly mnged to mintin the proper lel of demnd. 88
