Cheerleader Canddate Selected BY BARBARA DONNELL PROGRESS FEATURE EDTOR Jovlta Dck s Eastern's newly elected "Mss Cheerleader."> Ths poston enttles her to represent Eastern n the natonal "Mss Cheerleader USA" contest. Pctures of her wll be sent, along wth those of rep- resentatves of colleges across the naton, to Cypress Gardens, Florda. From these pctures the fve fnalsts who wll compete for the ttle 'Mss Cheerleader U.- S.A." wlu be chosen. Jovlta halls from West Mlton, Oho, where she was a cheerleader for Mlton Unon Hgh School for all four years. She was captan of the squad her senor year. Ths s her second year of cheerng for Eastern's teams. Jovlta's frst reacton to her new ttle was one of dls-bellef. " thought lt was a Joke," she sad. After beng convnced that she had been selected, Jovlta added, " wll do my best to lve up to the ttle." Jovlta has some serous thoughts about her role as a college cheerleader. "Cheerng n college s so dfferent from hgh school. t's more fun and more work. You have to use psychology on the crowd some tme." Jovlta feels that she owes a great deal of her prowess as a cheerleader to the experences she ganed at the Natonal Cheerleaders Assocaton camp that the Eastern squad attended durng the summer. The one week camp n Hattlsburg, Msssspp was a meetng ground for college cheerleaders from all over the Unted States. Jovlta Practces wth the squad twce a week for about two hours each sesson, Besdes cheerng at the games, pep ralles take up extra tme. However, despte the hard work, Jovlta "loves cheerng for Eastern.' She descrbes the cheerng squad as "Just lke a lttle famly because we all work so close." Her enthusasm s qute evdent when she remarks, 't doesn't matter whether the team wns or loses. You stll feel lke a part of t-t Just gets you nsde." After recevng a degree n physcal educaton, Jovlta plans teachng on the secondary level. She s a member of Qwens, the Gymnastcs Club, HYPER, and KYMA. '' J rr ' ^ ' ' ^ u?rrzss& g& -, BS=1 '-««J:-9r- MULLDTS 'ns' are out Student s Represented By Commttee CRYS FOR STUDENT power and student rghts are soundng on most every college and unversty campus n the naton these days. Many of these cryers have taken steps to see to t that ther ays do not go unheeded. St-ns, wade-ns, stand-ns, and many other "ns" have become a campus vogue and "Berkeley" has become a collegate household word. Perhaps the reason that a lot of these "ns" drew more response from the polce and the press than they dd from unversty offcals s due to the fact that the students who were makng the demands were gong about t n the wrong way. Here at Eastern, students may never have to resort to such drastc measures due to the efforts that wll be exerted by the Last month at the Unversty of Kentucky a bll '... creatng a commttee to study pass-fal gradng for classes not n a student's major feld..." was ntroduced to the Student Government A pass-fal bass for gradng nonmajor courses could substtute the tradtonal number-letter method wth a "P for pass and "F" for falure. Ths new gradng system would releve the pressure of havng to do as well, n non-major courses; and would also gve dse student more tme to concentrate on courses of hs major feld. The new gradng dea does not elmnate the tradtonal system, for all grades from major courses would be affected by t. ^ Theoretcally, the extra tme spent wth major courses should mprove the qualty of specalzaton. However, part of the "general educaton'' a student mght receve would be sacrfced for a greater understandng of hs specalty. Most of us feel that t s desrable to know a lttle about a lot, and a lot about a lttk (our major courses). The problem seems to stem from just how "lttle' we can know about a "lot," and stll call ourselves well-rounded, educated people. f the 'de-broadenng'' effect has a tendency to reduce ncentves for knowng "a lttle about a lot," then the students produced by a pass-fal system mght be "brllant n ther felds," but rather unnformed" n other respects. When a student has the capacty to nternalze a large amount of nformaton, he wll eventually start to nterelate and recombne hs knowledge nto new and useful deas. Ths s the process of "nventon," and s essental to a progressve socety. Elmnaton of the need to nternalze vast amounts of seemngly unrelated nformaton could have the long-term effect of reducng nventveness n our socety. Ths defntely s not n the nterest of progress. By reducng the amount of unrelated nformaton, the pass-fal system could also reduce the level of general awareness. Ths s not to mply that t would reduce the "capacty" for awareness, but rather the "desre" for t through constant exposure to hghly specalzed nformaton Of course we must admt that at the present rate of accumulaton (through re- rwfcr Student Affars Commttee and ts advsory commttees. nstead of throwng rocks, hornng cars and pcketng the presdental home. Eastern's student body ha been gven the opportunty to st down wth ts admnstratve and academc offcals and go over each and every rule and regulaton thoroughly and draw up a new set of rules and regulatons governng the students rghts and responsbltes on campus. The most mportant part of ths sgnfcant step s the fact that the student body, through the 14-roember Student Advsory Commttee, wll have a say n the process of reconsderng the rules. Ths student commttee, s made up of student leaders on campus, people who have been elected by the students to represent the Pass-Fal Gradng: Good Or Evl? search) there wll be more than enough specalzed nformaton for reconbenaton nto new deas wthn any gven area of ttudy., Perhaps the student wth a "well rounded educaton" eventually wll dsappear. Certanly there wll be a reducton of hs ablty to mnk for hmself about matters not related to hs specfc feld. f the prncples of hs professon do not have unversal applcablty, or cannot serve as e foundaton for hs "phlosophy of lfe," then hs poston s rather undesrable when he s compared wth an ndvdual who has a broader outlook. When we are confronted wth problems whch make us maladjusted, we look for logcal, or at least adequate solutons to them. An ndvdual who has been exposed to a vast amount of nformaton s probably n a better poston to "ratonalze," and fnd a soluton whch wll make ^jqewc ^Tllff tfjsuo that moves are scker than ever. Moreover, notes the lady legslator from de State of Mane, movegoers are younger than ever. Youngsters 19 and under plunk down 32 percent of all theater admssons, often to see such flms aa "The Teen-Age Psycho Meets Bloody Mary," "The Plague of the Zombes," and "Brth of Trplets." n an artcle n the December leader's Dgest, Senator Smth characterzes these and other sex-and-sadsm moves as "a menace to chldren." Authortes quoted n the artcle agree. Unversty of Wsconsn psychologst Leonard Betkowtz notes, "Research suggests that meda volence s more lkely to ncte chldren to acts of overt aggresson than to 'dran' them of ther hostle energy." Fredrc Wertham, consultng psychatrst for Queens (N.Y.) General Hosptal, notes that a saturaton campagn of "brutalty, volence and sadsm leads to a demoralzng of healthy nstncts." Psychatrc socal worker Eleanor G. Fsher adds, "Sck sadsm n moton pctures can very defntely be damagng to a normal chld's development." The move ndustry has a "voluntary classfcaton" system that s supposed to students and to thereby contrbute deas and opnons to the. Affars Commttee whch may be most nearly representatve of general student consensus. Wth these thngs n mnd then t s now the task to tee to t that all rules and rghts of the students of Eastern are contested by ths commttee and gven; the utmost consderaton. t s ths land of workng together of the student body and admnstraton of an nsttuton that could have prevented many of the unsghtly dsplays of dspleasure shown by so many college students across the naton n the last year or more. Revampng and leomsderng all de rules wll take tme and patence, but t s certan that de watng wll be well worth the rewards wrought by t. ^^ hm fed better. The fads he remembers from a broad educaton tend to renforce People wth an nadequate overall amount of knowledge would have a harder f ms rtooqjt soutsoos to v^f r pcoofccnuv They wouktprobably be more nwadjnated As the bass of Amercan ndustral producton becomes more specalzed, penhaps t wll be necessary to allow ttdsnt more tme for major courses n order to keep them up to date and prepared for ther ntended occupatons. n the future we wll need hghly specalzed personnel when the war n Vetnam s over, and ndustral producton becomes more orented to the Space Program. f the pass-fal system can brng us closer to our destny wth the stars, then perhaps the negatve effects would be well worth toleratng. 11.af.. Senator Slaps Sex-sadsm Snema LG labd flms that are unsutable for chldren. Yet MGM sponsored saturaton advertsng for the move n such magaznes as 'Teen' and "ngenue," publcatons amed specfcally at teen-aged grls. "Furthermore," argues Senator Smth, "most of our moves ncludng a good number of those unft for chldren are not made by members of the M.P.A.A., nor are they submtted to that organzaton for a code of approval or for classfcaton, Thus, the door on degeneracy and sadsm s stll wde open." "Clearly, the problems of sex-andsadsm moves reman untouched by Hollywood's 'voluntary' classfcaton system," wrtes the Senator. "Somethng more must be done." One concluson emerges n some surreys now completed. The central member of the volent gangs are well organzed. That s to say, they know one another, they have had prevous meetngs and agreed on tactcs. Ther atttude s that they have "the rght to protest" and that ther "rghts" are superor to the rghts of others. Therefore, other persons do not have the rght to oppose them. Recruters who come from the naton's armed forces, the ntervewers who annually come from major corporatons to talk wth job applcants and persons wth an opposng vew may, therefore, be roughed up, barred from entry, or so dsturbed by dn and volence as to make ther presence untenable from the vewpont of common sense. Ther applcaton of the "'m-rghtand-therefore-you-have-no-rghts" certanly s not a part of the Bll of Rghts, of lav^ nor of common decency. nvestgatons reveal that the "you-have-no-rght-whatever" tactc s a part of the plan. t s an acton determned by the small number who know what they ntend. Appeals to jon "the peace demonstraton" also are a carefully prepared tactc for larger demonstratons. At least one survey has called ths "bully boy gang nterrupton" of the rghts. of others and the voelnce used remnscent of the early "fascst gangs" n taly and Germany. The concluson does not label them as Fascsts. What t does say s that the tactcs of rough-house, "break-up-themeetng" and "nterrupt procedures of consttuted authorty" are smlar to those of Mussoln's black shrts and Htler's brown shrt gangs that nssted only they had "rghts." At the Unversty of Madson, for example, Presdent Fred H. Harrngton sadly watched a small, volent, but dscplned group bar job recruters wth force. He sad: "There are a vary small number who plan to dsrupt ths unversty. There s an even smaller proporton who want to brng down the unversty and the country." "The new fascst" comparson of McGll 'The New Fascst' - -? these tghtly organzed, dlcplsftcd gfosp s not wthout factual smlartes. The recent peace protest m Wastang ton, whch attracted some 33,000 persons, was managed by an organzaton whch s qute small. ncluded among those who ssued the Washngton "call" were some wth undented Communst backgrounds. A heavy majorty of those who answered the "call" were, of course, unaware of cms. were "nce, decent people." They were for "peace" and so they went t dd not matter that on arrval persons were n charge who were unknown to them sod that orders were beng gven by persons whose dentty, afflatons, and records they dd not know. The most extreme obscenty was used by those who sought to provoke the troops and marshals to volence. Few of the vstng thousands, beng wholly outsde soy knowledge of who was runnng the show, heard or saw the wrtten obscentes. None saw the debrs left on the last nght by the hard core group of less than 100. t ncluded, for example, used contraceptves, a half dozen or more bras, several pars of drty pantes, and so on. A recent letter to the edtor revealed the extreme navete of at least one fne lady who objected to the descrptons of the obscentes and the debrs. "We passed through your state on oar way home," she wrote, "and my hosband went nto a hghway gas staton restroom. He told me he wss shocked to see that contraceptves were on sale there n a vendng machne. So that's the sort of drty state you lve n." Who sad the age of nnocence s ended? Bjay ' facdst But, then so tmf jestenury... and the rest. n that thru for wars, tme was enough Now, m peace, tomorrow for the wr or the battle... Yes, mtt mt then. Terry Rankm Law And The Conflctng Conscence Bj Terry Ran/tn Each of us bulds hs own morals; hs own autonomy. Few are alke and even fewer are the same. Yet we elect our general government to outlne a general moralty; a general and elastc body of law to gve as a mutual set of scruples that governs us all. But no go»»rly of any sort s wthout ts hounds or free from lmtatons, lnes are drawn by the lews and ther makers. ^JOt OCcCQ OCeUv CDC DCXXaWC DtDCeMtM crmnal one whose morals and way of ffe s a corrupton; a socal evl or llness to socety and rghtly so, for so to speak, he s beneath the toleraton of socety. Yet no lne has only one sde; there must be mote to these laws of socety than those who obey them and those who break them. f there s a "beneath" concernng, the law, then there must consequently be an "above." To llustrate, consder our congressmen's congressonal mmunty whch places Ma above traffc volatons and other such msdemeanors. Our own consttuton gves us the rghts to "lfe, lberty, and the pursut of happness." Ths enables us all to have a free conscence and wll, oat own moralty, and a personal desgn of sew wth ts own ndvdual lnes and lantatons. The sews of car government do not command cast to feel a sense of gult, to regret, to feat that be has wronged n any way. These sc hs own freedoms; hs own autonomy. t s only natural and consryantal then that one's personal lnes of conscence should occasonally he above those of the general law, so that what the law demands wthn ts bounds s beneath hs lne of some moral role. Our muual laws rarely requre our moral support, bat nstead, materal and physcal support n the case of the war sa Vetnam, they do not requre one's agreement, mentally, wth that polcy, hot rather, hs tax dollars and perhaps trgger fnger. t does not, by say lnk, seem democratc to guarantee a person free wll whle sknultaneously requrng hs materal support and sacrfce for that whch he does not and cannot support morally sod conscentously. Laws ate stated wth consequence n to those who break them. Bat t that they should also mdude an Usng the draft agan as an example: t lots grant relgous mmunty, hot not one We an all gven to some degree of a a of practcalty. To some, t would be mpractcal to saner the comaqnfncvs of huge fne and/or mprsonment that to company the refusal to be drafted. t s better to compromse, surrender to the law, lght n the war, and hope to stay alve; to temporarly lay asde one's own creed and adapt to another. To others, to those to whom a law that threatens rather than secures s an unjust law, t s only rght to fght that law before the war. To stll others, the later group serves as a hdng place for ther cowardce, a facade for ther eager, rmrhmkmg defance. There an the ones to whom toe term "draft-dodger" would seem to best apply, rather than oat who truly beleves n the rammuty or government; that any government s no more sacred ordrvaaethan ts saaeeaa. t aaaasa oahr toeacal khan that sent wth one pont of law, freedom of choce would grant ham an mmunty to the requrement of that law. "Thou shalt not kll" yet all governments lft themselves above that bask law by makng war wth one another. Then s, to my knowledge, no lew prrtalrrtf tee who attempts sucde. Was t net the vctm's choce between lfe and death? What law of legslaton s broke.? Yet the real webs of complexty be n desaaasanf just who s above or below the law wata One's acton goes aganst t Who s ft to serve as a judge of creed? Loopbosas would leap from such an ndmdasbzatkm of ke law. What standards most such a judge consder? Who should determne those standards? And yet what fpvtranaent "of the people, by the people, and for the people" cannot ask tself then qnsstans? Perhaps t s valuable experence, however, to fnd that ndvdualsm, too, s not dvne; that conscence s not the master of the law or ts slave. Sacrfcng one freedom to preserve one more crucal to socety may be a factor justfyng some demands of the law. Perhaps t wss not practcal to wrte ths; even though s sort of law decreed that should, my conscence went one better and bad k wrtten as k s.
